The Tie Avenger is the weapon you know would come off the drafting board immediately after Yavin. It's got enough to compete with a X-Wing without sacrificing the advantages of a Tie, and based off tech that was already in development for Vader's hotrod.
Honestly, it doesn't deserve to be on this list, because its problem is just being UNKNOWN. Yes, the first entree is like this too, but it was also a major lore thing in the EU as to how powerful it is, in part thanks to its ridiculous armor. Its basically the SANE version of trying to put something like the Sunkiller into the setting of Star Wars. A very seriously durable craft, but not an invincible one that can ram through super capital ships or blow up stars like the fighter/falcon-sized version of a doomsday weapon Mary Sue that can only be destroyed by literally throwing it into a black hole. The TIE Fighter (the standard one) itself should be on this list. Because it is well known, and yet everyone and their uncle insults it, comparing it either to the Interceptor or Defender, or the X-wing where most people think that it is just rubbish compared to all three. A lot of people basically think that the standard TIE Fighter is a heap of rubbish. Unless they have followed lore videos previously commenting on it being decent, which are very few in number overall compared to videos that either laugh at things like that "TIE tank" or instead just look at more obscure ships. Seriously, I've had people tell me that its inferior to the V-wing, its predessesor, and the so-called "Jedi Starfighter" (the latter especially being due to the whole thing about how they are almost entirely flown by, you know, Jedi?).
And it was totally unrealistic why Advanced2 and Defender TIEs not used in crucial battles And also Non - presented Imperators SD in battle of Endor; that ships staying inactive and wait .... Seeing the Tie Avenger on the thumbnail makes me happy. That ship is so cool. Also, Y-Wing is still one of my favorite bomber starfighters. Trifighter's pretty awesome too.
The Tie Avenger just screams spec-op for me tbh, also only the most skilled, honored, respected and elite imperial pilots can fiy it into battle. The Y-Wing was my favorite Star Wars ship (besides the X-Wing, it's a close second)
@@loganwhitney8471 It's basically equivalent gameplay wise to the Royal Guard TIE Interceptor. But a slightly bigger target from above/below, and a tiny bit more durable under the shields.
In X-wing/TIE FIghter games the TIE Avenger was always more annoying to fight in my opinion than the TIE Defender because it was so tiny and hard to hit.
The Avenger, to me, is what the Empire should've tried to mass produce when the Defender proved to be too expensive. You still have a fighter that can outperform the best the Rebels have with the Avenger, the Defender's just overkill, and it pains me to say that as much as I love the Defender. Unfortunately, there's a saying in regards to warfare: children study tactics, men study logistics.
The B-Wing was too expensive and required a great pilot to successfully manage. The Y-Wing has always been my favorite ship because it's got armor, a gunner, an astromech, a heavy payload, and it's relatively cheap compared to most rebel fighters aside from the Z-95. It was a hit and fade bombing beast that has had a special place in my heart since X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
And, unless I'm misremembering a throw away line from a legends book, the B-Wing cockpit was designed for Mon Cala. Can't recall the book, but Ackbar was flying Leah to the 'Wind Cathedral'.
The Empire could have used an Infantry and Air support setup. You see in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, US forces typically fought Insurgents using both Infantry supported by Aircraft, since it is highly unlikely that the Insurgents would want to fight off against total US airpower. So in my opinion this could be adapted into Star Wars as a tactic against Rebels, Stormtroopers supported by Aircraft. (I am talking about your typical rebel force, You know the small-time groups with no starfighters since the X-wing is superior to the TIEs)
With the Tri-Droid it just exemplifies something that always bugged me about the Tie fighter. Yes you have disposable pilots that pilot fighters that don't have a hyperdrive or shield and is meant to swarm the enemy. I mean in legends the Tie fighter cost 60,000 credits, but you could pay for a Vulture Droid which is 19,000 credits and has the same things as the Tie and more. It doesn't require a pilot, it could go into a walker configuration as a support unit or heavy infantry, and it can just chill on the hulls of ships that don't have hangers. An entire fleet of Droid starfighters seems like a better investment then an entire fleet of Ties.
You are correct in that in a sense of how many you can field a Vulture droid makes more sense. However the Empire’s reasoning, to my understanding at least, for using the Tie fighter comes a bit like this, one everyone hates droids now so they’ll hate us if we’re using a fleet of them, two why use droids when we can use people, which will make their families more loyal and willing to support us since they’ll have one of their own working for us. It basically comes down to propaganda versus effectiveness and they chose propaganda
Your pricing doesn’t even take into account the cost of training a pilot, which adds even more to the cost of a TIE. Training a new pilot also takes time, probably a year at least. Training a new droid takes seconds (likely taking the combined experience of all the vulture droids and uploading it into each new unit.)
Honestly, justin's response hits the nail on the head. Imperial navel doctrine was far more concerned with appearance then it was about actual effectiveness, due in heavy part to the Tarkin Doctrine. Why was the fleet of arguably one of the best capital ships in star wars history, the venator, replaced with a fleet of Imperial Star Destroyers, despite the fact that Imperials were outright designed to be brawler ships with other capital ships (in a time where the war was over and most of the enemies would be in freighters, fighters, corvettes, MAYBE frigates if you are lucky)? Cause the empire can't be using well recognized craft of the republic and they wanted to use the big scary beatstick of an Imperial to fear the enemy into submission. TIEs, while not scary like the Imperial, could make the same effect with sheer numbers AND came with the bonus of "hey, see that dot in the sky? That is a loyal imperial citizen doing their part. Are you doing yours?" You inspire fear AND potential loyalty all in one swoop… If we look at legends, we also get another reason for TIEs over droids. You see, Papa Sheev was a user of Battle Meditation in Legends. He could manipulate battlefields across the galaxy and screw with people's heads at a whim. This power RELIES on weak minded people crewing every single aspect of your military to maximize its effectiveness. So, by choosing TIEs, he makes sure every single fighter in his armada is a target for his manipulation. He can't do that with droids… at least not through the force, anyway.
Not exactly an underrated starfighter but one that I think deserves more attention is the K-wing from Legends. It looks fantastic, it reminds me of an A-10 Warthog, and it technically functions the same way. It's ridiculously heavily armed but not to the point of being op and it served with the New Republic, which is my favorite faction!

I love the Republic Gunships. They are as devastating as bombers with better guns. Pity the Republic Gunship got nerfed by the limited amount of proton torpedoes.
Feels like ages since Ive seen or heard about the TIE Avenger. It was one of my favorites from the X-wing game series. I wish it got more focus in upcoming content.
yeah, It was frustrating to be a glass canon, until finally I got shields, but I'm a crappy shot, so I am very dependent on having shields. I'm happiest in a B wing.
Its something that needs to be remembered. But NOT something that belongs on this list. I'm sure most people who actually remember that the damn thing exists would say its very much NOT underrated.
Those clips were from a trailer for the video game "Star Wars: Squadrons" that released on PS4 and PC last year (I think it was last year). I'll post a link to the full video in a sec. It's badass
The most underappreciated starfighter in all of Star Wars is the Porax-38/Rogue-class starfighter used by the CIS and Cad Bane in both the Clone Wars series, episode 3 and not forgetting the cameo in the Mandalorian Chapter 6
Funny thing about the Y wing. It's the only ship I can fly in star wars battlefront every other ship I crash almost immediately but stick me in a Y wing and I command the skies.
Ah, yes; the Y-Wing... as in "Why in the blue hell did I get saddled with this thing!? It handles the way a friggin' bantha would in space." (That's meant as a smart alecky joke, people, so save your conniption fits.) 😀
@@michaelandreipalon359 The Nebulon-B (in my headcanon, which basically means EC-Henry's history of the ship as per his rendition of what it WOULD have looked like in Imperial service, and may well have looked like in a few instances), is a perfectly decent ship. Even if it has been stripped down a bit too much, either at the scrapyards before they were acquired by the Rebels, or if they have simply been stripped down by the Rebels themselves to create a purpose-made ship (i.e. turning one into a medical frigate or something).
I love the Avenger. Sleek, fast, shielded, agile... it's not a lie to say I'd choose one over the defender. Sure the defender might be more heavily armed and armoured, but the thing handles like an M3+ and is TALL AF as well. Avenger, not so much.
It depends a lot on the game, in original Tie Fighter the Defender was better in every way besides size being both faster and with better maneuverability (physics breakingly so in the pre remastered version).
@@CareerKnight That's fair; I never played the game it debuted in but in EaW mods and X4: Interworlds it seems to be like a heavy strike fighter compared to the avenger beiing the more nimble but lighter dogfighter. Then again I also prefer the avenger aesthetically 🤷♂
@@vincediscombe7360 Some things try to balance it against the Avenger whereas in the original it was simply the next step in the evolution of TIE design (so in that regard the mod approach is a bit like trying to balance the Interceptor against the Fighter or the X-wing against the Z-95).
@@CareerKnight the interworlds mod in general stays pretty faithful to canon where it can wrt ship performance, though it is constrained by the game's core mechanics- the ships' speeds are decided by [engine power/ship's mass]. Guess the defender hull is just that bulky in interworlds 🤷♂
I mean, that is mostly due to its age really. And some components of it CAN be upgraded to a point. Most people accept that its a pretty good ship, but just one that may have remained in service for too long... because it was at least better than whatever else they could scrounge up or buy enough of. And well, if a last generation fighter bomber is better than the latest intentionally-modifiable-into-mil-spec-vessel civilian designs that manufacturers were putting out, then it has to be pretty decent even in the early-mid Imperial era.
I’m glad that you had the TIE Avenger in this list, as it’s one of my few favorite Imperial starfighters overall. I also love the fact that Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer in Last Jedi was a design nod to the Avenger, intentional or otherwise.
I actually like the TIE Avengers design a lot more than the TIE Defenders. The defender has a gigantic profile with that third wing and is imo rather ugly, again thanks to that third wing.
I like the Defender's design, although I have noticed the proportions of the ship get warped in different ways every time I see it. In particular, there's what I call "The Stubby Version" that I just hate lol But the Avenger is by far my favorite. Despite being part of the Advanced line, it feels like a direct successor to the TIE Interceptor which I love and it was the first TIE I've ever seen use warheads, have a hyperdrive, and have shields. To me, it's like the TIE version of an X-Wing and A-wing hybrid. Soooo cool
I always loved reading the customization that went into the Invid style Trifighter. So much of it simply made sense, such as cutting out additional viewports in the ball cockpit to take advantage of the wing layout to allow for more visibility for the pilot, as well as the ability to parasite onto the hulls of a wide variety of larger vessels for hyperspace traversal and rapid deployment when not modified with a hyperdrive itself.
Playing rogue squadron or any other game with Naboo starfighter, it was my favorite. Fast, maneuverable, great pilot visibility, small target, with two powerful rapid fire cannons.
I'm gonna throw in my own pick for an underrated starfighter: The bog-standard TIE/ln. Yes, I said it , it's underrated. This fighter flew circles around any other, mass-produced manned starfighter in the galaxy from the time it was introduced until the introduction of the A-Wing, and it could still outmaneuver it. It's also incredibly cheap and features very few moving parts, making maintenance a cinch. The lack of shields and hyperdrive aren't as big of an issue as one might think...at least while the Empire was on the ascent, it only really became a severe handicap after major defeats like Endor. That said, I will concede that it should've been replaced in front line service with the TIE Interceptor once that became available, with the regular TIE relegated to second line and garrison duties.
I mean it was just a slightly worse V-Wing for half the cost... Not really "underrated", as we know they're dangerous in large numbers... they just suck individually.
I LOVE the tri fighter the instant I saw it I fell in love with the design the role it played and just how deadly it was as not only did it have the advantage of being a droid but it was highly adaptable and intelligent and in my opinion easily the best Starfighter in the clone wars as it was better armed than any other space superiority fighter and smart enough to mope the floor with veteran clones and even challenge Jedi so it was sort of the magna guard of droid fighters.
Not sure about the Avenger being underrated, primarily because Vader's own version shows its capabilities in the right hands. After all in Rebels Vader wacked Phoenix Squadron hard by himself
YES. So glad to see the TIE Avenger/Advanced get some love. That is such a great fighter and you really never see it used. It was always my favorite when I was a kid... probably because I was usually playing TIE Fighter.
The Tri fighter is considered underratted? It's easily my favorite fighter from the Republic era and it was an insanely deadly fighter. -It had better AI than the vulture, was faster, smaller, more maneuverable and had magazine space for up to 18 missiles AND could mount a couple buzzdroid missles under the housing which was more than 3x what the vulture could carry and more than made up for having 2 less laser cannons. I would consider this fighter to be in the running for one of the deadliest in the franchise.
Most people see "droid starfighter" and then think "oh, like those B-1 battle droids that everyone just mows down. Quantity over quality." Which to be fair, was something they did tend to do at times (for various reasons). The Tri-fighter's main occurance in games also does not represent its deadliness very well.
I still remember the old days of X-Wing Alliance multiplayer. Once I fought in a 2v2 match. I flew a B-wing and my opponent flew the TIE Avenger/Advanced. I held him off by slowing down and basically using the B-wing as a turret. The Avenger was faster than me, but every time he turned to face me, I blasted at him with my 4 laser and 2 ion cannons 🙂
So nostalgic seeing the Rogue Squadron footage for the Y-Wing, I'd absolutely love to see you cover more on the Rogue trilogy, either plot or just game wise they were all a massive part of getting me deep into Star Wars as a kid
I’ve always loved the Avenger and Interceptor but have been playing with the Royal Guard Interceptor a lot in X-Wing Minis. There’s something about it looks with the little slats sticking out that appeals to me.
I'd say one ship that is heavily underrated (but not a starfighter) is the X-70B-Phantom Covert Operations Craft. It could be modified to take an Adegan Lightsaber Crystal Stealth System upgrade and likely an Isotope V upgrade. Also was a great craft for Intelligence Agents, allowing for the mobility of a starfighter and the stealth capabilities of a small frigate.
The TIE Avenger combines the best features of the TIE Interceptor and the X-wing. Of course, you have to pay a huge cost, but if the Empire did not spend money on the Death Star and super star destroyers, but replaced all TIE Fighters and TIE Interceptors with TIE Avengers and TIE Defenders, the rebels would have no chance of winning the war.
IIRC, the TIE-Interceptor was designed to counter the X-Wing...which from what I recall in Legends it was actually pretty close to being a success in that role and there were some who felt that if it had seen mass deployment before the Emperor's death would have actually stood a solid chance of either ending the rebellion or forcing a radical change in tactics and strategy.
So glad to se the Y-Wing getting some love, we see on screen it being a dog fighter in ROTJ taking out two interceptors and never gets credit for that. Speaking of interceptors, I don't think the TIE Interceptor needs to be on this list, they are brilliant and beloved Imperial vehicles, put the standard TIE on here instead. They have a bad reputation from Legends and Rebels for exploding at the drop of a hat but in the films, especially ANH, they are pretty badass. They pretty much defeat the rebels at Yavin and would have were it not for the incredibly lucky fact that the alliance had the most powerful force-user ever just show up and also Wedge Antilles was there being an absolute lad behind the quad X-Wing lazers.
Hypothetically: F22 Raptors with no Heat Seeking or Radar Guided missiles in an atmospheric battle with Tie Fighters and Interceptors. The F22s can carry a full load of Unguided or Beam Riding missiles, and still have their cannons. Who'd come out on top? Given those restrictions, what other Earth combat planes could fight the Empire.
I think the Bes'uliik doesn't get talked about because of when it was introduced. Had the Legends universe not been squashed by Disney, we might have seen more of it.

Eck, Great analysis. I had never heard of the Besilisk. Random thoughts. * Y-Wing: I admit to warming up to this ship in recent years. It's not sexy like the X-Wing, but has this charming , underdog quality. * TIE Interceptor: I was shocked my favorite TIE is underrated. But your argument as to why makes sense. * Tri-Fighter: I think this lethal droid is underrated because it rarely appears onscreen. Looking forward to your next video.
An interesting list Eck, though I think I slightly disagree with putting the TIE Interceptor on them. Never came across it as being underrated to me. Since we see it used by elite/ace pilots, and it gets a good showing in ROTJ. Not to mention it's presence in other Star Wars fighter games and such. Still, to each their own, and it was a good vid. I never had heard of the TIE Avenger so cool to see it described.
In one game it's quoted as "can make circles around a X-wing"... it's all about agility... but that agility comes at a price (no shields, no hyperdrive)... Yet, it is never was overrated.
The Tie Interceptor has always been one of my favourite star wars fighters. I just love the look of it. I thought it only had 4 lasers on it tho... is that just me misremembering or did it only have 4 in the old X X-Wing & Tie fighter games?
The Tie Defender is basically the cadillac of starfighters when the entire Imperial navy was designed for cheap, massed fighters to support the Star Destroyer, the mega-cadillac of capital ships. Even disregarding the logistics of production, you can tell that something like 75% of the Defender's features and functionality would go unused by Imperial doctrines. There may be Imperial ace pilots, but there isn't a system meant to cultivate them, they're just as disposable as anyone else. It's a ship too expensive to use en masse, too independent to justify the administrative overhead necessary for other Imperial functions to operate, and too multi-purpose to leave docked on a Star Destroyer waiting to defend itself. That'd be a waste. Smaller improvements like the Interceptor or the Avenger are much more economical and more designed for what a Tie is meant to do: Fight the other fighters so that the big ships can do their thing.
I’ve always liked the Arc 170 & wish someone would do for that ship what they did for the Y-Wings. Would a Arc with its armor removed and given a faster sunlight speed be a capable dog fighting ship? It may have been faster than the Y-Wing but with stronger shields and more firepower than the X-Wing. Also the N-1 star fighter was a deadly ship that got no love because The Phantom Menace receives so much hate but it was faster than X-Wing, had a mag of 10 torpedoes, had decent shielding and its main weaknesses were the price tag and limited hyperdrive range both fixable. It was known as a capital ship killer.
I might suggest the opposite for that ARC-170 remodel - with its big laser cannons and design for long-distance operations, a stripped-down ARC might make an excellent raider craft. Hyperspace into a system, inflict serious damage, hyperspace out. Picking off enemy convoys or shuttles that haven't quite gotten outside of the nearest gravity well might also be a good role for it.
The Arc 170 is not really a normal fighter so much as more a heavy fighter or even fighterbomber. Fighters as a whole moved towards smaller frames during, but especially after the Clone Wars, in part due to maneuverability becoming the most important thing to have in a fighter (due to both some realistic reasons, as well as just a bit of circumstances relating to both the fact that force sensitives were driving what were seen as the best fighters, and good old imperial propaganda after that). The "Next Generation Arc 170" may well have been the K-wing. Which itself is similar (as someone else here noted) to an A-10 Warthog, except it actually CAN engage fighters to a half-decent degree. Not much more than half-decent, but still better than an A-10.
Also, no, the N-1 was not that great. It wasn't bad though. But it was definitely a local Nubian design in the end and only really meant for them since they could afford it, and one which would never see very far-spread use simply because it wasn't good enough to stand up to the cost/performance ratios of various other fighters which outclassed them (ESPECIALLY cost). It was strong enough, but people already thought it was pretty awesome because one or more games may have made it seem even more awesome, and because some really gifted kid from some outer rim sandball was able to use one to destroy the droid command ship blockading the world he was on, essentially single-handedly.
@@michaelramon2411 even escort is a possibility. During the Thrawn Crisis Feyla was using A-Wings as escort despite being created for dogfighting. The Arc had long range capability as a scout and raider so it a Jack of All Trades type of ship.
@@SephirothRyu I would agree until you put interceptors up against modified freighters. Han Lando and others would blow apart 3 or 4 Ties before loosing primary shields because while their ships weren’t the fastest or most maneuverable it had tough shields, thick armor and 360 degree firing solution. Skilled pilots also didn’t hurt.
Aurek-class Tactical Strikefighter from the Old Republic I would look that up because it’s one of the best ships even for modern time in the Star Wars galaxy
I always loved the XG-1 Assault Gunboat. Basically the older version of the TIE Defender (in terms of versatility profile; it's shielded, has three varieties of armament, and has hyperdrive), but it felt more fair because you had to pay for that "Jack of all trades" by being "master of none".
The Mandalorian ships in SW The CW are an amazing design! I hope Din gets his hands on a $hitload of Beskar&finds or builds The Razors Crest II with it either being completely Beskar coated or...just the engines along with the cockpit?
Fun fact about the Avenger if I remember my lore right: Maarek Stele (your player character in TIE Fighter) actually preferred the Avenger over the Defender in a dogfight as the Defender had a bit of a rear blind spot that wasn't present on the Avenger.
From what I recall the TIE Interceptor had just the 4 wingtip lasers, not 6 total. The cockpit mounts were retained from the Fighter, "with the option to mount the 2 cannons" but they were mounted as standard.
The Y wing is like an A-10 for me, not exactly a bomber, but packing a super heavy punch. Specially with that ion cannon and the ordenance it can carry
In my opinion the X-83 Twintail is an extremely OP Starfighter, and very underrated, few are the fans that talk about it besides it is the only Star Wars Starfighter that has shields similar to a light frigate is almost indestructible.
The first time I came into contact with the Y-wing aside from the movies was when I read a quote ,,...blind, wallowing pigs and slow.´´ That kinda formed my opinion on the fighter, but I do have to admit, it is quite better than I imagined it at first.
Playing squadrons as a tie interceptor was a lot of fun but the speed and maneuverability were a little too much for me to handle haha im a y-wing main in that game and im used to heavier ships.
Avenger was more or less like a mass production version of the tie defender I think, it’s cost and effectiveness made it worth replacing the normal ties
The original battle front 2 made me terrified of the trifighter. Those missles and the size of it was a genuine issue to try and hit consistently. I could only imagine as a kid how other fighter pilots had to deal with them.
Tri-fighters are probably the single most deadly interceptor in all of Star Wars. Speaking from experience in squadrons, A-wings are hard to hit, trying to hit something half that size sounds like a nightmare. Clone fighter pulots deserve a ton of respect for going toe to toe with those death machines.
Avenger is definitely underrated. Great fighter, wish they had showed them on Star Wars Rebels too, before introducing the Defender. Also the Tie Interceptor only had 4 laser cannons.
I can't believe the Y Wing, Tie Interceptor and Tie Avenger aren't that highly regarded. I've personally always appreciated them all. The Y wing is a classic Star Wars ship, it's like you said an effective bomber and they expanded upon it's story by showing them used in the Clone War. The Tie Interceptor looks great it's incredibly fast and maneuverable and deadly. The Tie Avenger like the Interceptor looks great, it has shields, a hyperdrive and concussion missiles. I wish it was brought into the new cannon. Both Ties are among my favorite Tie Fighters. So why overlook these? I don't get it.
I've never heard of the Bes'uliik and I'm not sure I can form an opinion on it with such scant information. However, in regards to the others 100% agree. The Y-wing and B-wing have done a complete 180 in regards of my starfighter preferences; I now much prefer the simplicity, efficiency and effectiveness of the Y-wing over the complicated and heavy maintenance B-wing. Tri-fighter and both TIEs are awesome and effective too.
No mention of the V-Wing? Though after giving a piss-poor showing in The Bad Batch, I'm not so sure it's "underrated" so much as just plain bad.. A shame, as it's my favourite interceptor design in SW and a much more likeable design than the A-Wing, which close to nobody likes.
I think the Y-Wing in the Sequel Era I'd really underrated. It is less armed against capital ships, but it is far more maneuverable and seems to be a much more functional N1 starfighter. It can still target hard targets like capital ships, but in the right hands, it can outfly even the most advanced TIEs ever built. Plus, as a planetary defense fighter, it's designed to be widely available, which can help planets better defend themselves from stronger powers.
The Tie Avenger is the weapon you know would come off the drafting board immediately after Yavin. It's got enough to compete with a X-Wing without sacrificing the advantages of a Tie, and based off tech that was already in development for Vader's hotrod.

I have always felt the Vulture droid was the superior swarm fighter, for exactly the reasons you gave
I believe the Tie had a more powerful laser cannon armament, but still.
Are you doing yours?" You inspire fear AND potential loyalty all in one swoop…
If we look at legends, we also get another reason for TIEs over droids.
Its always bugged me that they never made a kit of the k. Granted it was only really featured in the one trilogy, but an awesome looking ship.
@@blackc1479 It's in X-wing
@@owenparris7490 huh, which one? (Assuming you mean the vid games, i know they did a mini for whichever tabletop, but ive never played.) I mainly know it from the black fleet books.
@@blackc1479 It's a mini lol sorry. Wouldn't mind seeing it post episode 9 or during the interwar years before 7 in a show. Either way, it'd be cool, don't you think?
@@owenparris7490 it would be frikkin awesome. Whenever i think of the k it reminds me of a line from the first book, a pilot thinking of it as (paraphrase) "a mean, chip on the shoulder, looking for trouble star kitty". And then when i saw what it actually looked like...yup. Seriously, how often in SW do you get underwing pylons?
Holy Shit.
That one Tie Intercepter clip was fucking amazing.
It was the Cockpit scenes were real and up to date.
Those clips were from a trailer for the video game "Star Wars: Squadrons" that released on PS4 and PC last year (I think it was last year). I'll post a link to the full video in a sec. It's badass
Here it is:

I just watched it.
Thanks for putting the link.
It was fantastic.
As someone who grew up playing the Rogue Squadron games on a daily basis for years I absolutely love the Y wing.
The most underappreciated starfighter in all of Star Wars is the Porax-38/Rogue-class starfighter used by the CIS and Cad Bane in both the Clone Wars series, episode 3 and not forgetting the cameo in the Mandalorian Chapter 6
When I was a kid way back in the 80's the TIE Interceptor was my favorite "bad guy" star fighter. Definitely in my top 5 Star Wars toy's.
Same here, as much as I respect the defender, the avenger seems/feels like my kind of ship.
Y-wing is a great bomber, if not made out of paper
Yeah
I mean, that is mostly due to its age really. And some components of it CAN be upgraded to a point. Most people accept that its a pretty good ship, but just one that may have remained in service for too long... because it was at least better than whatever else they could scrounge up or buy enough of. And well, if a last generation fighter bomber is better than the latest intentionally-modifiable-into-mil-spec-vessel civilian designs that manufacturers were putting out, then it has to be pretty decent even in the early-mid Imperial era.
Made out of paper? It's considerably more durable than an X-wing by any accounts
In particular, there's what I call "The Stubby Version" that I just hate lol
But the Avenger is by far my favorite. Despite being part of the Advanced line, it feels like a direct successor to the TIE Interceptor which I love and it was the first TIE I've ever seen use warheads, have a hyperdrive, and have shields. To me, it's like the TIE version of an X-Wing and A-wing hybrid. Soooo cool
The tie avenger is one of my all time favorites and so is the Razor class starfighter it's practically unknown
Love me some Tie Avenger!
@@collins3D I made my own star wars Imperial splinter group that used them as their primary starfighters i
@@brendonbewersdorf986 this is the way!
What's it's name?
I always loved reading the customization that went into the Invid style Trifighter. So much of it simply made sense, such as cutting out additional viewports in the ball cockpit to take advantage of the wing layout to allow for more visibility for the pilot, as well as the ability to parasite onto the hulls of a wide variety of larger vessels for hyperspace traversal and rapid deployment when not modified with a hyperdrive itself.
Honestly probably the Naboo star fighter is also underrated, it was rare ship seen in Star Wars but it was also a sleek and deadly ship
Playing rogue squadron or any other game with Naboo starfighter, it was my favorite. Fast, maneuverable, great pilot visibility, small target, with two powerful rapid fire cannons.
Two honorable mentions from my end:
-The Assault Gunboat
-The Missile Boat
I'm gonna throw in my own pick for an underrated starfighter:
The bog-standard TIE/ln.
@@DarthWall275 Quantity can be a quality all of its own.
And that was him at 2% power.
That wasn't the Avenger though, that was actually the TIE Advanced x1, the precursor to the Avenger.
The Avenger being something like the x5 model, yes.
YES. So glad to see the TIE Avenger/Advanced get some love. That is such a great fighter and you really never see it used. It was always my favorite when I was a kid... probably because I was usually playing TIE Fighter.
This is the content I subscribe for!
Always had a special place in my heart for the I7-Howlrunner
The TIE Avenger always deserves some love.
Same thing with the Y-wing.
So good list. Good list indeed.
Haven't seen too much discussion of the Scimitar Assault Bomber despite it being the Legends successor to the TIE Bomber in the Empire.
He did a playthrough of two of the games if you haven't seen them
Absolutely loved this video 10 out of 10 Ek!!
It's always nice to see the lesser known TIE variants get some attention.
Always did love the TIE Interceptor...
Ah, TIE Avenger my beloved. Always nice to see it getting some recognition!
Technically, is it actually a starfighter?
@@williamlang6728 No
Great list of fighters!
I was kind of hoping to see the Soruusub Preybird in here, but a great video regardless.
In any scenario with plot armor removed, the rebels would lose.
Tie Interceptor is my all time favorite star fighter, it just looks amazing
Hypothetically: F22 Raptors with no Heat Seeking or Radar Guided missiles in an atmospheric battle with Tie Fighters and Interceptors. The F22s can carry a full load of Unguided or Beam Riding missiles, and still have their cannons. Who'd come out on top? Given those restrictions, what other Earth combat planes could fight the Empire.
I think the Bes'uliik doesn't get talked about because of when it was introduced. Had the Legends universe not been squashed by Disney, we might have seen more of it.

Eck,
Great analysis.
That TIE Avenger model is beautiful
I love the TIE Interceptor. Favorite TIE variant.
Speaking of the Y-Wing, why no mention of it's pricier sibling the NBT-630 Bomber?
I always loved the XG-1 Assault Gunboat. Basically the older version of the TIE Defender (in terms of versatility profile; it's shielded, has three varieties of armament, and has hyperdrive), but it felt more fair because you had to pay for that "Jack of all trades" by being "master of none".

Would love to see a video about the Tie Phantom and the Tie D Droid Fighter. Also, like others have said: the Missile Boat from Grand Admiral Thrawn.
The Mandalorian ships in SW The CW are an amazing design! I hope Din gets his hands on a $hitload of Beskar&finds or builds The Razors Crest II with it either being completely Beskar coated or...just the engines along with the cockpit?
The skyhopper is clearly the best fighter in star wars
It got me through Training on Tatooine several times !!
Fun fact about the Avenger if I remember my lore right: Maarek Stele (your player character in TIE Fighter) actually preferred the Avenger over the Defender in a dogfight as the Defender had a bit of a rear blind spot that wasn't present on the Avenger.
Horton Salm managed to capture Soontir Fel...That was a hell yeah moment for Y-Wings.
From what I recall the TIE Interceptor had just the 4 wingtip lasers, not 6 total. The cockpit mounts were retained from the Fighter, "with the option to mount the 2 cannons" but they were mounted as standard.
I love the Y-wing, Tri-fighter & TIE-Interceptor personally I love the X-ceptor it has Interceptor panels attached to a X-wing hull. ☺️
The Y wing is like an A-10 for me, not exactly a bomber, but packing a super heavy punch. Specially with that ion cannon and the ordenance it can carry
Y-Wing go BBRRRRRRRRR
The A10 is shot down by any AA that's better than a dude with RPG. It's not a good analogy, especially as the 30mm Vulcan is kinda pointless.
A-10 of star wars is K-wing.
@@wojtek561 Why not both? Specially as the K-Wing is kinda of a replacement for the Y-Wings
The TIE Avenger is my favorite of the TIE designs, the TIE Hunter is my 2nd.
In my opinion the X-83 Twintail is an extremely OP Starfighter, and very underrated, few are the fans that talk about it besides it is the only Star Wars Starfighter that has shields similar to a light frigate is almost indestructible.
The droid tri-fighter
The Y-Wing is always my favorite fighter. It's heavily underrated and really useful.
I love that short film of ties
YOU MEAN MY SHIP!!!! FOR MY SQUADRON!!!
TIE Interceptor definitely my favourite Imp design. X-wing for Rebel Alliance and V-wing for Republic.
The first time I came into contact with the Y-wing aside from the movies was when I read a quote ,,...blind, wallowing pigs and slow.´´ That kinda formed my opinion on the fighter, but I do have to admit, it is quite better than I imagined it at first.
2 more neglected by most:
1. the missile boat
2. Tie predator
There used to be fan art of the Besulik fighter floating around the internet, I think the Empire at War mod Rise of the Mandalorians uses one.
I knew that the tri-Droid fighter was a great starfighter and very deadly as well
I glad the Tie Avenger is canon so far.
Y-Wing is my favorite fighter i love its look.
video seems to freeze a bit in Y-wing section
The original battle front 2 made me terrified of the trifighter. Those missles and the size of it was a genuine issue to try and hit consistently. I could only imagine as a kid how other fighter pilots had to deal with them.
i will sing the praise of the TIE/HU Hunter till the end of my days. All the speed of a interceptor but with shielding and payload of a Y-Wing.
Y wing is absolutely underrated. It's a beautiful workhorse and deserves better
Great stuff
Trifighter getting some well deserved respect
Republic Y-Wing has always been my favorite
The YWing my favourite starship, work horse of the rebellion.
The Avenger is my favourite TIE. I would’ve loved to have seen it in SWS.
FINALLY! The Y-Wings get some love.
