Have you ever experienced something so embarrassing that you just wanted to dig a hole and bury yourself in it? Well, that was me on Sunday morning when I took a trip to the local Japanese supermarket...

This video was filmed in July 2021, during the short period of time right after most people were first vaccinated where mask mandates were revoked and most people had stopped wearing masks.
10 years studying Japanese. Next, 10 years studying how to talk to women.
アハハはは
Bruh
I thought the main appeal of knowing Japanese is so you don't have to talk to women..
I need an Anki deck "how to talk to women"
Impossible
That poor guy of the first lady you talked to...
You know afterwards she's gonna be like "See? See? If they can get that good, there's no excuse for you not to!"
Lol
His life is going to be torture from now on..... :-)
rip husband
And the daughter!
From the last person
Can we stage an environment where like 20 white guys fluent in Japanese are planted in a random American store and the same Japanese person just keeps encountering each of them over a 1-hour period
Gold
The content we need and deserve but won’t get
@@sarraceniafell How are you going to find 20 damn near native sounding white guys in one spot 😂
japanese youtuber walks into american store to practice english but every american they encounter speaks fluent japanese.
That would be an utter mind collapse and would requite therapy
Seeing people strike up friendly conversations with strangers in the supermarket was truly anxiety inducing for me
We're 3 layers removed from social interaction and it still creates anxiety.
恥ずかしい、死にたい
I legit don't think I could ever do that in my entire life... I already have issues trying to talk to people in my native language, let alone my non-native languages.
Nice to know I'm not the only one.
@@benjiusofficial 3 layers? Can you explain how haha, maybe I'm just stupid
Imagine you are born and raised in Japan and you move to the US and a white dude walks up to you and compliments your Japanese skill.
You hitted a Japaneses with "nihongo jouzu' lmao.
Hi Matt, I'm a Mexican and I'm learning Japanese from Mexico. Of course, I'm using the massive immersion method to learn it. Yo have been a real inspiration for me, thanks for that. I really love Japanese culture but is not only for that reason that I'm learning Japanese; there is a test (JLPT, N3) coming up this june, if I happen to pass it, I'll be able to get a very good salary here in Mexico as an interpreter that could literally change my life for good. I'm really grateful to you because of that, because you thaught me the way. This new project that you have, I want to be part of it. THANKS MATT
i know some people think that making these types of videos are pretentious or something but this really is encouraging and super entertaining so I really hope you do more!
Thanks Mike!!!
Hahaha, the opening hook was good. "Did he embarass himself to Japanese speakers?"
No, of course not. He embarassed himself to other TH-camrs lol
banjo benji
I felt Matts pain in the end so well hahaha
that's basically me with any interactions I have with strangers ever
Love seeing you out on the streets Matt 😊 Happy New Year from Japan!
Ken used to help me learn Japanese back in like the early-mid 2010s. It's crazy to see him again. Cool.
8:09 matt with the power pose 😂.
Assert dominance
🤣🤣
😂😂😂that made me laugh too hhhh
"I just passed 100k" lmaoo
That woman flamed her husband so hard for not learning Japanese lmfao
Is Ken that guy who learned japanese entirely through listening?
Yes!
Does Ken have a channel? I want to hear about his process
I loved this type of video - I really like your infectious personality and seeing you step outside your comfort zone Matt! This type of video reminded me of Moses, who passed away recently. He was such a light in the language learning community! I think you should do more videos like this! The part with Tama was funny! I love her sm. Congrats on almost 138K :D
Same here. Let's spread his legacy
Moses was such a legend.
Hey Matt, idk if you care for this, but I noticed you really warmed up to the camera and seem really energetic especially in this video. Awesome stuff.
Matt is a straight up king. No cap. Peep his stance and posture at 7:59
The only thing missing is a fanny pack and a visor cap!
What I’ve learned today- Whenever a Japanese person tells you that your Japanese speaking is good, you must always deny it 😂😂😂
That is great news!!! You and Ken are both amazing at this! Can't wait to hear the details!
8:05 we'll never know why he said that lmao
love the vid btw!
This Ken dude's accent and pitch is nuts. I lived in Japan for several years, and my wife is Japanese, and I am nowhere near that good in terms of accent and pitch. This kind of blows me away. You are great too Matt, but being honest Ken's accent is next level. I would probably think he was Japanese on the phone.
YESSS another video speaking japanese with people, I love this kind of videos
Yesss same here
Hey Matt! I just wanted to say that i enjoyed this video very much and i appreciate you and your channel. Thank you so much for all the help and ideas you've given me and thousands of others for our ,,Learning Japanese" journey. Have a great evening!
Loved the Maid-sama OST in the background.
The 100k part had me feel so embarrassed for you lmaooo. Still a king though.
Wait.. Matt, Tama Hero, and TheeFrenzy all in one spot!? I feel like all of my worlds are colliding right now what the fuck
Was the Tama part real or scripted? I literally keep going back and forth on if it was or not, Funniest part of the video. You captured nerdy awkwardness in the best way possible. It was all so relatable. I was almost in tears 🤣. Love it.
scripted lol... that much realism could not be acted out
Matt is such an introvert lol. He's so articulate in his videos, but in real life, feels like a cute toddler hahahaa. I find it cute. Ken is really a good conversationalist.
Lets get a Matt interviews Ken interview!
Thank you for showing that last "Embarrassing" Part very wholesome of you!
Wow, it's that Ken guy from ages ago. Haven't seen or heard from him in a long long time. Nice to see his Japanese is the real deal, I wasn't so sure back on the day. Super impressive!
That was fun to watch. The reaction of the Japanese people remind me of my Japanese friends here in Dublin who say they find it very hard to approach people they see in public who they think are Japanese. Two friends say they met the least Japanese way possible - they started chatting on the train (one saw the other was using Line).
Youre such an inspiration matt. Everytime I think Japanese hard you remind its possible in time.
Anyone with 10,000 hours can do it
@@Maidaseu if you did 3 hours a day that would work to almost 10 years even. Most likely though by year 5 you would be pretty fluent.
@@lastninjaitachi theres a guy who passed N1 from scratch in 9 months and by year 2 he was speaking almost like a native.
6:06 Can't believe he did that :/ :D
漫才みたい 笑
ボケ方が完全に日本人
Wow, you're at almost 140k subs, this vid should take you there. Congrats. You know, I'm glad to see you branching out to new mediums of video. It'll probably help promulgate your message to a wider crowd. You should consider adding your website in the description of the video for newcomers.
8:30 At least you were _completely_ aware of how that looked. I would've worried a lot more for you had you turned to Ken for a high five. 😂
Eh. More medium. Not too hot not too cold
日本在住経験ほぼなく、ここまで完璧に日本語を習得できるのは凄すぎる!相槌やつなぎまで極めて自然でびっくり!
I could watch this type of content all day.
Matt: your Japanese is good!
Japanese woman: because I’m Japanese…
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦♀️
二人の言葉の使い方や、言い回しが日本人そのもの。
Yes! The part two we’ve been waiting for haha
finally a new video I ve been waiting for one for a long time
I tuned in to check out Matt vs Japan, and found Matt vs Beaverton. Wonderful video. Thank you.
The very first Japanese woman got so disappointed her husband didn’t know Japanese like you guys LOL!!!!
Wow I was just thinking about how Matt vs Japan hasn't uploaded in a while
Welcome back :)
I've been watching your videos for a long time now Matt, you've inspired so many people (myself included) to get past the dreams and get stuck into the language learning process. Keep the great content coming, you're a legend
英語めちゃくちゃ聞き取れると思ったらペラペラの日本語だった
the music in background is "Tiny Little Adiantum" by Shibayan Records
Omg your baaaaaccckkkkk yaaayyyyyyy We missed you!!! 🎊🎉❤️👏👏👏
Omg Uwajimaya
I'm rather impressed what a huge Japanese Superstore you have there in America! I wish we had something like that in the UK 😢
Let's go brah finally a new video! 🔥
matt looks so awkward and nervous i love it i cna relate lmaooo
Most readable captions ever! It's a crime that so few use shadow boxes. Nice.
Is there any interview about Ken? I'd like to know how he nailed learning Japnenese by listening.
I think I speak on behalf of all your fans when I say PLEASE keep making more videos like this. There's lots of youtubers who do this with Chinese but it's rare to find youtubers who make videos speaking Japanese in public and it's so motivating for those of us who are seriously trying to learn.
Wow I understood 90% of the japanese spoken but I think in that situation I don't think I would be able to piece together a single sentence lol
Great to hear from you Matt. I'm using your website to study German right now. Best wishes on New Year's Eve.
love this content from you! These types of videos are always a good motivator to language learners.
i wasnt there but i can feel the anxiety loool damn
Im so happy right now. Ive been biting at the bit to see another video of yours. And its my favorite type of videos. Super motivating. God bless!
The employee mentioned how her daughter could understand Japanese but not speak it. That seems to be a common phenomenon among children of immigrants. Yet it also seems to contradict with the theory that once you have great listening, you can just start to speak. What do you think?
I too am curious about this
I think their listening is probably so so and they haven't actually acquired that much input over their lifetime. Like they can probably understand what their parents are saying but probably don't have enough comprehension to feel comfortable in the language outside of that domestic setting. My friend's parents spoke to him in a mix of Urdu and English so he can understand what they mean, but that doesn't really mean he can speak very much or would be able to keep up with a film entirely in Urdu. Or alternatively, they could have pretty good comprehension but just haven't ever tried to speak because of lack of necessity and lack of confidence (though if they made the effort they could probably get fairly proficient pretty quick).
Well, this guy Ken learned through listening
As an English learner, for the longest time I wasnt comfortable in making sentences and writing in English, despite understanding 100% of everything I read.
After some time, little by little I tried my hand at it and got more used to using more expressions and outputting in english, instead of translating from my mother language.
That's true with me. I grew up in Ireland and my parents grew up in Congo and speak an African language called Lingala around me a lot. I can understand the context of what they're saying but if you ask me to speak it I'd just freeze and not know what to say.
The legend is back?
Matt’s been into Japanese so long that he said “two foreigners” when referring to himself and his friend in America.
Japanese person in America: “外人“
American “ノ、ウ”
Tamashi Hiroka??? lmaoooo, I used to watch her channel way back in the day. What are the chances of you running into her here? What a throwback lol.
At 7:20, the woman isn't commenting on how fluent Matt is, she's just making a comment on how the amount that he's studied - I'm not fluent or anything but I found that pretty obvious. This is either an oversight by whoever TLed this or an instance of "creative liberties." One could also argue that "it's what the woman meant by what she said," but we as the viewer don't have that context, so it's best to assume that she was purely commenting on how much/how long he's studied.
I LOVE that they just reply in Japanese despite speaking English as well. Very different than in Japan 😅
Hey Matt! We met briefly in the VR Chat Japan Hub about a year ago, and I've been slowly trying to learn Japanese since! I don't know much, but I have some basic grammar and kanji under my belt. Not sure what you're working on, and I'm just getting to the stage where immersion is becoming helpful, but looking forward to it! Thanks 😊
PLEASE MORE OF THESE VIDEOS
finally back!!
Ooo! Looking forward to next week! So excited. Keep up the great information, please. ^^
did she actually say "once a week とか twice a week とか" lol
Oh hey Uwajimaya! I thought it must be the one in Beaverton since I live near the others in WA and it didn't look familiar lol.
Reminds me of the time I randomly met a Japanese family in Big Bend National Park and asked if they spoke Japanese in Japanese and then I totally froze on my Japanese and continued the convo in English lol
no way is that maid sama ost in the background :D
homey mad shy, more of these videos will probably transform his social skills too
Wait a second.. what? This channel is underrated for sure- deserves no less than at least half a million subs, but I think it deserves a million.
Come on guys, let's help him out! xD
FINALLY SOME JUICY CONTENT FROM THE BOY HIMSELF
Love the awkwardness. It makes it unique and entertaining 😀
love it when you upload dude. happy new year!!
That’s my local market. Re: not many Japanese people there - During WW2, the local Japanese population of Oregon and Portland was forcibly removed and interned to other states. The population has never really come back to what used to be Japantown.
Its good to see you back at it!
DO MORE OF THESE!! Seriously dude.
I really enjoy going to Uwajimaya here, all the staff are super helpful and nice. Fun video!
you live Portland, OR?? I saw ur video with oriental pearl and was super excited!! You're awesome 👍🏽 I live here too!
Great video Matt!!!
I love this video, amazing as always, you are one of my favorites TH-camrs
Thanks for this kind of content Matt !
I'm glad we got to see sigma male Matt with his hands on his hips
Wow, never knew you lived in Oregon as well. I've been to this Uwajimaya so many times, I used to actually tutor at the Japanese cram school in the back. Shoutout to fellow Oregonian!
Genuine question for Matt about what the lady said at 6:29, doesn't this blow a huge hole in the input hypothesis and its offshoots (assertions that you don't need to practice output separately and that it mostly follows from just acquiring the language through input)? Come to think of it, I know many people like this; children of immigrants who understand their parents language perfectly but can not speak it.
From what I've seen, when heritage speakers have massive amounts of language ability potential; they just haven't activated it. When they start regularly immersing and trying to speak the language, they become fluent extremely quickly.
Finally a video lol Merry Christmas!! Happy New Year!!!
The Maid Sama ost is such a throwback. Nice video
what an interesting day
Matt does really well. I'd like to see him try to speak with my friends in the kansai area. Not only one on one (because obviously you can kind of guide the conversation or the things being talking about will tend to be about you) but also a group of Japanese people. That's where I find it hard sometimes since the topic changes to japan related things and the conversation speeds up not to mention the kansai words and accent.
Awesome video!
I lost it when i heard the maid-sama music!! Awesome vid
Why don't you do these more often? I love these.
yeeeees, post more of this type of video please!
