Is it just me or does Matt speak better Japanese than I speak Chinese...?
yep
Matt is transforming into xiaoma now
Yes. He does.

Telling the Chinese guy 日本語上手ですね at 4:59 was the ultimate weeb power move.

That Chinese guy was SUPER impressive. Switching between all those languages. He was the Goat.
Facts
He stole the show tbh
There was a guy just like that when I was in Tokyo. He helped me order steamed buns from a little stand. English, Chinese, Japanese. Extremely impressive.
There are tons of 在日中国人 like that in Shin-Osaka and Yokohama as well. The chinese are basically replacing the Japanese at this point lmao
Xiaoman getting Matt to go outside lol
The Weeb costume is amazingly accurate lmao
Costume?
Respect. I can't do this level of cringe. I often get the surprised comments all the time when I interact in Japanese but I never look for them. At least now it's less than pre-internet. Nowadays foreigner's speaking good Japanese isn't as rare since they just interact as if it was nothing. I really though... got nervous just watching you do this. You got some kintama Matt!
You really should do a collab with Matt! Would be a pleasure to watch

Perhaps everyone is aware that Japanese people continue to talk normally when they really think "this person really can speak Japanese". Conversely, if they think, "Oh, this person can only speak a little Japanese," they say, "Your Japanese is very good." This is also psychologically understandable. It's not a lie, but a gratitude for the act of "studying Japanese. He speaks in Japanese."
YAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS So glad I got to meet you! This video is bomb!

I wonder how this experiment would have been different if Matt first started speaking in English and then switched to Japanese. That's the method Xiaoma uses most of the time.
Yeah I can see how how that throws people for a loop more. You play into their stereo typing you and then smash it.
He should try japanese restaurants first
Matt's Japanese was always good but I think in this video he sounds even better now that he speaks more confidently than the last one.

OMG When the guy said he’s Chinese, I thought to myself, “Where’s Xiaoma?!” I thought the lady was recording at the time. But sure enough, Xiaoma was there, and that whole reaction of him recognizing Xiaoma was perfect!
Ikr?! I lost it at that moment! XD
tbf, Xiaoma is fairly popular and is sort of known in that area of New York. lol it's more surprising when people don't realize or are caught off guard at this point.
Yeah, exactly my thoughts too

The guy recognizing Matt and then recognizing Xiaoma was HILARIOUS.. Lmaooo
Been waiting for the Xiaoma crossover arc
I feel that even in the weeb get-up, you still didn't get many reactions and my theory is that when your Japanese is THAT good, they don't even stop to consider why you speak Japanese like that, they would just subconsciously assume that you are Japanese, even though you don't look to be.
Although my Swedish isn't as good, I have had the same thing from Norwegians (who can't tell that my Swedish sounds off) - and even Swedes are often too polite to ask "How come you speak Swedish?" because that would be implying that I musn't be Swedish.
Compared to other countries, when it comes to being suprised that a foreigner speak their native tongue, Norwegians in general really dont give a fck. Not in a bad way, I guess its just a mix between culture and that Norway is a multicultural society, so you dont have to be a blond haired, blue eyed person to be mistaken for being Norwegian.
@@jouumura4654 this happened literally 5 mins ago though through mass immigration. A few years ago it was still shocking to hear a non white speak fluent Norwegian. I suspect the same is happening in Japan.
@@europhobicantiwhitism3563 No, it wasnt. What are you talking about "the last few years"? Go to Oslo, Bergen etc. and speak Norwegian and we will see how many who gives a sh1t. Norway is a multicultural society and its a common thing that foreign-looking people speak fluent Norwegian. And it has been this way for more than a "few years". If you go to a small village where there's no foreigners, then yes probably.
@@jouumura4654 I'm not blond but I'm white and have blue eyes. My comment was more on that they can't tell I'm not SWEDISH because if my Swedish sounds off they just assume it's some Swedish dialect that they're not familiar with. The same with Danes except that normally I don't understand Danes.
@@daysandwords My comment about being blond and blue eyed was just to make ppl reading this understand that in Norway people dont judge by the look of your skin to determine if you are Norwegian or not, but by your language abilities. So if you speak fluently like a native, they will automatically think you are born here or atleast that you are a norwegian citizen. Which by your comment, shows that your Swedish is really good as they assume you are a local ^^,
Not really surprised Matt didn't get that much of a reaction in Kinokuniya. There are both white and black store employees that work there who speak fluent Japanese. There are different places in NYC that you meet people of various backgrounds who are students of Japanese.
I’m so disappointed that you didn’t bring a loli bodypillow into the shop.
Aw come on...thats....
that's just gross
Bruh lmaoo
Not even the ロリコン's in Japan do that, they understand the taboo nature of this interest and try not to disturb people as it's considered rude in the country. Gotta respect though, Japan has the lowest rates of child exploitation.
Bruuuh not the loli😩
when you asked for 英語発音 books i lost it
For whatever reason, seeing matt talking in public to random people really inspired me to push through in my immersion
Brilliant! My social anxiety could never....but this was great 🤯
That guy who recommended Chainsaw Man seems pretty cool, he seems really fluent in English and Japanese. I don’t think that’s common to find
I love that conversation with Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and the tiny bit of Korean. So fun! I hope to do something like that one day. I'm doing Korean but hope to work on Japanese soon.
The absolute chad energy to walk around like that unironically makes this video priceless. Lmfao
"You know all of this in Japanese right?"
I had to pause to laugh. I've had that in the Swedish café in Sydney. "Sorry I don't speak Swedish." - "Get out then!"
Swedish... In Finland, all Finnish-speaking people have to learn Swedish at school, and all Swedish-speaking people have to learn Finnish at school. Everybody complains about the need to learn Swedish - "You're not going to need it anywhere" "It's a small language" etc. My spouse was doing some work experience stuff for her studies in Ethiopia and while there, she also visited Somaliland. And ended up speaking Swedish with a local who had been a refugee in Sweden and had returned to rebuild his country...
Amazing story! You guys don't learn English in school though?
@@danielliebson3928 @Daniel Liebson We usually learn Finnish or Swedish as a second language and one more language is obligatory as a long subject and that's often English. In some schools you can take German, French or some other language instead of English but that's not too usual and since you can also take those languages as shorter electives that's what most people choose to do if they want to learn any other language than English. As an example: I speak Swedish as my first language so I started learning Finnish when I was 7 yo, when we were 10 yo we started learning English and when we were 14 yo we could choose to take one or more languages as electives if we wanted to so I took German.
@@puudathemeow5593 That's very cool. Thanks for the info!

This is awesome. The immersion method really does the trick, just have to keep at it. I have been working on Japanese since last July and my comprehension is coming along very well, forget speaking though... maybe in a year or two...
I thought you’re like an American guy who only speak Japanese and trying to learn more Japanese but you sound natural like native to me, and I also was surprised that your outfits what a crossover lol

Oh, and I'm a woman 😅
Accidentally speaking Japanese to Chinese people... We were playing Go with a friend at the Helsinki Cathedral back when we were young, some 20 years ago. There was a group of Asian tourists who looked really interested about what we were doing, so my friend started explaining it to them, in Japanese (because for a very long time, if you saw a group of Asian tourists in Helsinki, it was a safe bet they were Japanese - that only started to change around those years). Turned out they were from China. But luckily, one of them had studied some Japanese, so we were able to strike up a basic conversation...
This is peak skill, a 3 way conversation involving 5 languages
Bruh can't believe they really played that 'remix' of Tiny Little Adiantum in the store
Meeting with the guy from Guangdong was so awesome; he was one of the few fellow Chinese I have seen multilingual like that; maybe Spanish next?
That Chinese man was so freaking cool. I loved the tri-language conversation that was happening. More than that, even brought Korean into it. Y’all are so impressive. Keeps me motivated.
Also, are you at Mitsuwa area in New Jersey? Or is this one in another place?
This was great. It's hilarious seeing Matt go full weeb chatting to strangers in Japanese, but also knowing how serious Matt normally comes across and seeing him go what I imagine is so far outside his comfort zone makes it all the funnier. Hands-on-the-hips power-pose may have been what gave him the courage he needed.
I will say that even if I were comfortable enough in myself to dress like this and walk around in public, I would feel ridiculous anytime I actually engaged in conversation.
This was really inspiring, I would love to do that in Chinese and Japanese one day, currently I am learning Japanese and I know that the process takes time but, watching these kind of videos is what makes me keep wanting to reach that goal.
I’ve recently found your videos, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them. I’ve recently began self studying Japanese as of a few months ago. Your videos are very inspirational, and show me I can learn on my own with hard work and dedication. Keeping making content man.
Matt is flexing his fluency everywhere in that shop
This was one of your best videos. You and Xiaomanyc should do more together. More like this!
Best thing about this video are the different subjects of conversation, like the thinnest pen size, the right level of light novels to improve, searching for the best prices on a certain product, not only asking things like "oh, good morning, are you from *this country*?" "i learned by myself" and "i like studying languages"... quality content and advertising right there.
I can't believe you actually did it!!! 😂😂
Man, I am so glad you're making these types of videos. Can't wait to see more

I’m so jealous of all the Japanese reading material available. My target language is Filipino, and the only Filipino books I can seem to find are kids books and romance novels 😔
I am sure you probably have thought of this before, so i apologize if you have, but maybe try and find dubbed anime in filipino?
You could try Pugad Baboy, a filipino comic series. They use words common in speech.
@@GilBeloGil this person was talking about manga not anime tho
It's quite rare for me to see foreigners wanting to learn Tagalog since the language isn't really popular amongst language learners. I'm learning Spanish right now and knowing Tagalog helps a lot since there are a lot of loan words. It's interesting for me to think about how hard it would be if I was born in another country and had to re-learn Tagalog from scratch. Anyways, good luck pre! Kaya mo yan!
