Jamal, this version went to #2 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Rhythm & Blues chart in July 1965. The moves were strictly James Brown inspired. And yes, this is the original. Head wrote it.

Roy Head was a friend of mine...lived 2 miles away from me. Got to jam with him back in 1984 at his house during a show outside with our 50's band the Fender Benders. He was incredibly down to earth and talked to everyone. Super talented, and his son Sundance is carrying it on. A side note, it's ironic that Jamel's shirt says "Humble" on it, because just a mile away over the river is the city of Humble, Texas....same place where Howard Hughes was born. Crazy world. RIP Roy, see you on the other side, and I'll bring my drums like you told me to.

Jamel, Roy son, Sundance Head who was on Blake Shelton's team, was the winner of The Voice, season 11, in December 2016. Sundance and Blake performed "Treat Her Right" for his father. Roy passed on on September 21, 2020.

Loved your reaction, brother. Roy Head and James Brown must’ve been brothers from a different mother. Don’t let the gymnastics distract you from his feet; they liked like they were gliding on air or sliding across ice when they slowed down enough to see them. All while dancing in tight pants on a tiny platform. I always went wild when this came blasting out of my little old transistor radio📻 . I think he was pretty much a one hit wonder, but what a hit. Thanks, man.😎✌🏽☮️🎸

    Roy was a class act.
Clearly influenced by James Brown, he threw in a few moves of his own which
were impossible to imitate. Johnny Thunders also did a very good version back in
    1987. Gone, but not forgotten.

I had to hit "subscribe" after your reaction! You are so on point with this! Your reaction was as crazy as mine! Watching the video actually causes physical pain because there is no way I could ever do those moves! I joked that I "broke my hips" watching his video...
This guy was born in a little town in Texas about 30 miles from where I grew up so I am proud to see interest in his music. I never knew about him until Billy Gibbons did a cover.
His dancing level is so different that it just stands out. Really cool to see a local man, from back in the 60's, be so amazing!
Your TH-cam video does him right! Thank you!

Happy new year, y'all! My late husband's brother here in the Houston area used to be drinking buddies with Roy Head, and he said that Roy was a pretty eccentric dresser sometimes when they'd go out (just as a goof, I'm sure) -- like he'd wear a shirt and tie and sports coat with a pair of shorts. 😂 Sounds like he would've been a hoot to hang with. Anyway, the videos with him dancing blow my mind.

From wikipedia: Modern viewers have compared his jumps and slides to those of James Brown or even the Nicholas Brothers. Because he was white, but his footwork included moves popular among African American gymnastic dancers, he was sometimes said to be a practitioner of "blue-eyed soul".

I saw Roy perform back in 66 or 67 in Birmingham Al. The crowd went crazy over Roy's act . The man was definitely an entertainer . Sam the Sham and the Pharos may have been on that show with him. I remember the girls were screaming their heads off .

Not for nothing was he known as Roy "Mr Rubber legs" Head. One of the great tracks from my youth. We used to fantasize about a "Dance Off" between Roy and the "Soul Brother #1" - That would have been something!! Sadly Roy passed away in 2020 but he left behind several great tacks apart from "THR", notably "Just A Little Bit" and "Apple Of My Eye".

Definitely gotta listen the version from The Commitments. It's a tribute to Roy Head but the trio of backup singers and the longer ending make it even better.
