THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA was released on Charlie Daniels Band's 1979 album Million Mile Reflections. The song is written in the key of D minor. Vassar Clements originally wrote the basic melody an octave lower, in a tune called LONESOME FIDDLE BLUES released on Clements' self-titled 1975 album on which Charlie Daniels played guitar. The Charlie Daniels Band moved it up an octave and put words to it. The song's verses are closer to being spoken rather than sung (i.e., recitation), and tell the story of a young man named Johnny, in a variant on the classic deal with the Devil. The performances of Satan and Johnny are played as instrumental bridges. The song was the band's biggest hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, prevented from further chart movement by AFTER THE LOVE HAS GONE by Earth, Wind and Fire and MY SHARONA by The Knack. The song is an uptempo bluegrass song about the Devil's failure to gain a young man's soul through a fiddle-playing contest. The song begins as a disappointed Devil arrives in Georgia, apparently "way behind" on stealing souls, when he comes upon a young man named Johnny who is playing a fiddle, and quite well. Out of desperation, the Devil, who claims to also be a fiddle player, wagers a fiddle of gold against Johnny's soul to see who is the better fiddler. Although Johnny believes taking the Devil's bet might be a sin, he fearlessly accepts, confidently boasting that "I'm the best that's ever been." The Devil plays first, backed by a band of demon musicians. When finished, Johnny compliments him and takes his own turn, in which he references, but does not perform, four old-time songs: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, the name of an early 19th Century fiddle tune, and also the name of Daniels' 1974 album, THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN, a traditional American southern folk song, (the latter two were lyrical references): "Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough", which was famously used in Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys' song IDA RED, and "Granny does/will your dog bite, no child no", but the lyrics alone pre-date this song. Realizing he has been defeated, the devil lays his golden fiddle at Johnny's feet. Charlie Daniels played for us in Iraq in 2005 at fob Caldwell...he was the friendliest most authentic person and he did the concert with Tennessee national guard troops in his band...that was awesome!! I'll never forget that.

I am so excited for you to experience this. As a Black women growing up in Colorado. The music you review are the soundtrack of my life. I had this song on cassette. When it broke, I meticulously put it back together with tape. It’s nice to see some who appreciate music from different genres.

Aerosmith was trying to find their way back to success from a turn down in popularity mostly due to drug use. You don't have two of your band mates nicknamed the toxic twins for nothing. It was a huge success for Aerosmith. I'm not sure if Run-DMC had any additional success due to their collaboration.

My favorite part of that song was always near the end of the Devil's turn, where the fiddle legit sounded like demonic howling. He quite literally made that fiddle sing. Incredible talent.

It's funny how rap and country are so similar. Lyrically; both can be brutality real and cut very deep. Something rock and jazz never could do as well.

Mississippi delta blues is derived from Bluegrass and gospel. A misconception is that delta blues is Black music and Bluegrass is only White is due to record executives from NY in the 1920s travelling south to discover true American culture. They found that both Black and White musicians played Blues, Bluegrass and hybrids of both but the executives wanted to divide what Black and White musicians play because it’s better for marketing.

I've got to meet Charlie three or four times. He is absolutely amazing. Every time I've met him he put his arm around me and pulled me in for a hug. The picture we took together looks like we've known each other forever. He is a good man.
This song almost didn't happen. When they thought they were done with the album, Daniels realized there wasn't enough fiddle on it, so they had to write another song. One of, if not the biggest song of his career, and one of the most well-known country songs of all time. If you can find Dan Rather's The Interview with him, it's well worth the watch.
Yes that’s Charlie....he’s 83 this year and still tours....he was very popular in the northeast in the mid-late 70’s and early 80’s....we loved our southern rock cross over music...
He was a hell of a man. Actually had the opportunity to be his security for a special concert. He did this for the troops in Fort Hood. After this particular song his bow was completely destroyed and the crowd went wild. Awesome night...RIP CHARLIE DANIELS.

I'm from rural east TN, pretty much everyone here grew up playing bluegrass and country, and most of us are descended in some way from Ulster and Irish settlers who came here a few decades before the potato famine and settled this region. You can really hear it in the older generation. My great grandmother was in her 90's when she passed away recently, and she had a lilting twang to the way she spoke that is pretty much gone now in the younger generation. Even in her children it was less pronounced. But the music is a direct link

I played this in High School at the "Seniors Who's Who" talent show. We nailed it. It's so much fun to play on the drums. I had only played Rock and Heavy Metal, but We knew a kid named Gus that played Fiddle. Practiced like 4 days and killed it. ;-)

I never understood why Johnny flat out won.... but as an adult I did some research into Johnny’s part. “Johnny”played a list of a few classic old time country songs that are technically more difficult. Whereas the devil’s part was all “fury and noise without any melody or poetry.” (Quote from Charlie) That was the point I was able to see why he was considered the better fiddle player.

My dad was friends with Charlie. We're from upstate NY where this concert was. My dad was at this show and it brings a smile to my face knowing he was there. So I've obviously heard this song a million times growing up and watching this live still gives me goosebumps. RIP dad and Charlie.

At the time it was released, around 1979, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" was a huge crossover hit which played on Urban, Country, Pop, Gospel. Maybe Latin, but I don't know, since we didn't have a local Latin music station, until a few years later?
I have a friend who does sign language translation in DC. She was given a list of songs to translate with another translator, and she didn't know the lyrics and how much lyrical content the song has. She handed the song off to the other translator when she saw how much lyrical content there was to translate...

Exactly. I grew up on R&B, Motown, Country, Pop, Disco, Rock & Roll. Then Rap, Dance, Stadium and Glam Rock came along. I discovered on my own as I got older, Big Band, Classical, Opera, Instrumental, Latin, Arab Jazz, Flamenco. When you allow yourself to be open to all kinds of music from around the world, you never not have something new to listen to. Something that sounds different.
i listen to other international music, even though I don't know the words, the sound and voice also speaks to ya. There are a whole lot of artists with talent and creativity that is a real blessing to know that exists, thanks for the internet to discover these hidden treasures, and to think what their generation of music and types that those people liked that I like.

Before Randy Travis came on the scene , John Denver had been my favorite male country artist. As for groups ; Alabama has been and will continue to be my favorite group. I do like all groups though. At the time I first started listening to Alabama the Oak Ridge Boys was another group that I listened to a lot.

Aerosmith was trying to find their way back to success from a turn down in popularity mostly due to drug use. You don't have two of your band mates nicknamed the toxic twins for nothing. It was a huge success for Aerosmith. I'm not sure if Run-DMC had any additional success due to their collaboration.

Vince Gill playing a mean lead guitar or Garth Brooks putting on a hell of a show that had everyone going nuts I seen both live just amazing and I;m mostly a metal or rock fan, Charlie was incredible.

This song almost didn't happen. When they thought they were done with the album, Daniels realized there wasn't enough fiddle on it, so they had to write another song. One of, if not the biggest song of his career, and one of the most well-known country songs of all time. If you can find Dan Rather's The Interview with him, it's well worth the watch.

I'm from rural east TN, pretty much everyone here grew up playing bluegrass and country, and most of us are descended in some way from Ulster and Irish settlers who came here a few decades before the potato famine and settled this region. You can really hear it in the older generation. My great grandmother was in her 90's when she passed away recently, and she had a lilting twang to the way she spoke that is pretty much gone now in the younger generation. Even in her children it was less pronounced. But the music is a direct link

Exactly. I grew up on R&B, Motown, Country, Pop, Disco, Rock & Roll. Then Rap, Dance, Stadium and Glam Rock came along. I discovered on my own as I got older, Big Band, Classical, Opera, Instrumental, Latin, Arab Jazz, Flamenco. When you allow yourself to be open to all kinds of music from around the world, you never not have something new to listen to. Something that sounds different.
My dad listened to everything he passed that on to me.
You would be Amazed how many metal heads are also into Classical music.
Especially Wagner, when they bring out the cannons to play with
So much variety. So many beautiful rhythms. Beats. Riffs. Solos. Voices. You name it.
i listen to other international music, even though I don't know the words, the sound and voice also speaks to ya. There are a whole lot of artists with talent and creativity that is a real blessing to know that exists, thanks for the internet to discover these hidden treasures, and to think what their generation of music and types that those people liked that I like.
The fact we can feel such joy watching someone react to hearing one of our favorite songs proves there is hope for humanity. Love your reaction. But, then again, this is such a great song, played by exceptional musicians.

@@helema23 Nice. Yes - I must agree music today is a much different animal then music of the past. I like the older music better , but can enjoy today's music for what it is. Before Randy Travis came on the scene , John Denver had been my favorite male country artist. As for groups ; Alabama has been and will continue to be my favorite group. I do like all groups though. At the time I first started listening to Alabama the Oak Ridge Boys was another group that I listened to a lot.

Yes!! I've seen him in concert 3 times now and got to meet him the 2nd time. He held my daughter who was just over a year at the time. She was playing with his hat. He was so great with her! 🥰
