- Power cut off during ignition and require switching off-on of ignition before able to start engine. All possible causes attended and suspected parts replaced. Need advice before replacing final and costly part- ignition assembly.
Problem is with the ignition key switch.
Key ignition assembly needs to be replaced, if you find the sweet spot than the bike will start immediately.
Suggestion:
Put hand on tank
Turn key on and power switch on
If you don't feel the pump start than that means connection is not established
Move key slightly back and forth. Continue to keep hand on tank to feel pump kick in.
This way you will know if your key system is gone kaput or fine.
I agree with that. I Have problem with one fuse in ignition switch box. From the bottom one didn’t wiek well and motor don’t start.
Have the same problem... It's worst now, sometimes the bike does not even crank. Replaced with new battery, now will try to replace starter relay (waiting for it). I suspect there's a loose connection in the ignition key, would look at that next

I think it must be a common fault. I’ve had 2 Versys 650s both from brand new and they have both had this fault!!! Won’t be getting another one.
Hola, exactamente el mismo problema, en una versys 650 2010 lo solucioné sacando la tapita inferior que cubre los cables y el tornillo que sujeta el módulo de contactos eléctricos al tambor. Se extrae el módulo y se abren las pestañas plásticas para separar en dos partes donde están 4 contactos deslizantes muy sucios. Lavando con wd40, secando con aire y lubricante levemente con grasa siliconada quedó perfecto. Todo sin sacar los tornillos de cabeza lisa.
hola amigo saludos desde Guatemala, tengo el mismo problema en mi versys 650, 2013 estoy por realizar un viaje y no se si realizarlo o no pues ese problema solo me lo ha hecho 2 veces en 2 años y me dijeron que es demasiado dificil por los tornillos
Biker Baker is correct. There is a grey wire from the ignition switch to the ECU that isn't getting contact inside the switch. This tells the ECU to prime your engine with the injectors. If you listen carefully you will hear it prime, then when you hit the start button it actually starts. If you don't hear the full priming sound, the engine won't start when you hit the start button. Ask me how I know.

Mine had a similar problem that was solved by a faulty drop sensor. Bike was cutting off whenever it felt like it , at idle, at 120 kph on the highway...
How did you resolve the issue? Did you replace the sensor?
Faulty kickstand switch. When they start to go out they can intermittently send false signals which can cause that.

I've replaced ignition switch (not the whole key assembly but only the wire with plastic switch tab that goes on on the bottom of ignition key assembly). It seems that it helped. I've ridden for a month now without encountering this issue any more.
I've bought ignition key assembly on my local ebay for a fraction of it's full cost, it was cheap and in better condition than my bike's.
Luckyly it was an easy swap, ignition switch is attached to Key assembly only with 2 screws, you don't need to remove key assembly.
I just bought a Versys 650. I thought that I had the same starting problem (a few times), but I figured out that all you have to do is make sure that the throttle is not turned all of the way forward. Instead ; twist the throttle until it takes up the slack in the cable. (Just a tiny bit of twist) It will immediately start, every time ! But, when I have tried starting my bike with the throttle in the full forward position, it has either failed to start or started, but idled ruffly, and the red F.I. warning light came on and stayed on until I turned the engine off, and restarted the motorcycle.

Hola, si a alguien le sirve tengo una solución, el problema esta en el switch de encendido como lo dijo Biker Baker, puede desmontar el switch y limpiar muy bien los contactos, quitar toda la grasa que impide la buena transmisión de corriente, al final hay 2 balines que pasan por unas pistas deben lubricarse con muy poca grasa y queda bien, si no puede sustituirlo por uno nuevo; tener en cuenta que para desarmarlo debe extraer los tornillos con extractor ya que son cabeza plana, espero le sirva a alguien, en mi caso mi moto er6n se apagaba al encender como en el video y en algunas ocasiones luego de encendida se apagaba en marcha por un segundo.

Did you manage to find the problem ? My 2008 versys started doing the same today and I cannot find the fault.
Not yet until now. but it doesn't occur as many times as before changing battery. i am confident its not due to weak battery.
