I LOVE the dated animation. It really hammers in the gritty, dusty waste-land setting and tone of the anime. It's why I can't watch the movie the same way.
Trigun's animation might be a bit sloppy at times - but holy crap, the final confrontation between Vash and Knives is one of the most amazingly animated fighting sequences ever made.
Actually, when it comes to Vash, I think that his serious persona is the real one and the rest is just an act to fool people, maybe even himself, especially considering how much shit life threw at him. I'm not saying that everything happy is the act, but atleast some part of it must be, like for example those fake smiles (manga readers would understand what I mean by that). Yeah he is a really good, complex character.
Hey, i always saw Vash's silly side as a Mental defence mechanism. Hes been thru so much horrible shit and feels so much guilt for the things hes done (altho it wasnt really his fault like blowing up those citys) That he has his alter ego that lets him get thru the day without being totally depressed and useless. Like how he was just a sitting the dirt for so long blowin up july. His story takes place over almost 100 years, he know what he has to do, he has to DEAL WITH his brother, but that cant get him thru everyday life, year after year. I think its a good parallel to Kenshin Himura. He knows the truth, but prefers the happy silly nonsense when he can have it
Wolfwood actually says it straight, it pained him watching Vash act like he was happy when the smile was mostly just facade covering how much he hurts inside. His genuine smile is always clearly different, silent and "serious"
Joni Hanski his fake smile is always closed with the eyes closed too or eyes open staring straight at the person. It was small, but that’s when he’s lying.
While I love the bright, vibrant colors and clear lines that you can get with digital methods, there is a certain otherwise unattainable beauty to the faded outlines and pastel-like backgrounds of older anime.
Digital animation is so fake and artificial looking. I find it hard to commend the efforts of who ever made it since its like a computer does all the work for them. Hand painted is so much more diverse. Everything so much more organic and natural looking, unlike digital where everything looks too bright and it can kill a bit of the atmosphere for me. And there's been great stuff to come out of it like Akira and the first GitS movie, and those are 50 times more well animated than crap today. Its like fast food and restaurant food. One is quicker, lower quality, and cheaper, whereas the other varies more in quality, but has more effort in it and is generally better.
It really depends on the show itself. Darker atmosphere, like Trigun, works better hand animated. Other shows, like Terror in Resonance, work much better digitally animated. Each form has advantages and disadvantages. Digital allows more detail, crisper images, and better conveys motion while hand drawn allows better control of color and detail, a more organic feeling, and more interesting techniques with the background. The best examples of each come from Ghibli for hand drawn and Dreamworks, Pixar, and Disney for digital. A movie like Castle in the Sky works much better hand drawn while movies like Kung Fu Panda and Wall-E work much better digitally animated. The catch with hand animation though is that it takes a large amount of effort and resources to make something that looks as good as digital, plus people are naturally inclined to go to the cleaner looking shows. The minor benefits (in some circumstances) of doing hand drawn animation are not worth the extra cost, time, and shrinking of the audience. Plus, with how good animation programs are getting, soon the advantages of hand drawn animation will be completely gone. It will be like comparing film and digital photography. Film used to have some advantages over digital, but know they're all gone. There are things digital can do that are beyond impractical to do by hand, and ease/cost is by no means the only reason digital is dominating the market.
I still remember the first time I watched Trigun, it was summer 2013, and I was browsing Netflix randomly and came across the series, with dub thankfully. I had heard good things about it online, and remember seeing the tail end of an episode on adult swim early one morning, though not know what it was at the time, and decided to check it out. About a week later I finished the series and to this day it holds a special place in my heart as one of those anime's that people must see. From beginning to end, Trigun is one of my favorite show, anime or not.
I think I might just be one of those guys, but I never found the animation to be dated. In fact I think it's actually impossible for 2d animation to be dated since it's (for the most part) actually drawn. Literally art in motion. So I don't really see why people think this looks outdated.
I know right. All because a guy sat there and painted everything BY HAND as apposed to some guy lazily slopping it together on a computer doesn't make it dated. Hell it shows like that should be more commended. Its like watching actual art move. Way more effort out into cel as apposed to crappy digital. But no, if there are no CGi lens flare effects, then its dated, according to people.
thelinedrive That's only your opinion, and mine is that animation no matter how old it is is timeless. There's good and bad animation sure, but never outdated
ethan philpot 1. Digital animation has allowed a crapton of advanced camera movement techniques that were financially unfeasible before. Honestly, how many times have you seen truly elaborate camera movement in non-digital animation? I haven't even seen Attack on Titan, and this gif alone already makes me want to watch it: 25.media.tumblr.com/d254067896ce31df89d9232cf63fe807/tumblr_mrcckyG9R61qjqgyio1_500.gif Note how the background moves the way it should in a 3D perspective. It's not just a flat image panned over. 2. Digital animation has allowed a crapton of colors that couldn't be produced before because they didn't (and still don't) exist as cel-applicable paints. REDLINE avoids this by blending hand-drawn animation with digital colors. Other than that, ANY hand-drawn anime with a color palette as wide and varied as that of, say, Guilty Crown? Kara no Kyoukai? No? I thought so... 3. Lastly, there exists a certain hard to define general "style" of character design that slowly changes over time. Many anime do not conform to it, of course, but many do. I never minded this, so I don't have a problem of watching older shows, but come on, do you honestly think Vash looks similar to modern character design? Goku? Seto Kaiba? I like the character design for all three of these characters, but I wouldn't say they look similar to the newer ones. So, for those who don't like these older styles, yes, there is such a thing as outdated animation and/or character design. 4. For specific shows, digital animation has also allowed for a look of sterility that was unachievable before. Serial Experiments Lain doesn't really have amazing animation, but its atmosphere of sterility is something that would've been killed by a purely hand-drawn style. Someone has already said there needs to be an Akira-red, I say there needs to be a Lain-white. Lain uses dark colors a lot, but its whites are extreme and blinding, reinforcing that clinical feel whenever it's necessary.
vanishy0urself I could spend quit a while trying to discuss each of your points in detail, but I'm rather tired today and instead I'll just say this: something was lost in the transition from Cell animation to Digital. Some think it was the grittiness, others believe that it was the wonder of looking at amazing animation and realizing it was drawn all by hand. Sure Attack on Titan looks good, but when you realize (usually by seeing an object that looks CGI) that it was made on a computer, all of that charm goes away. For 99% of shows, hand drawn animation is preferable to digital, because hand drawn animation has a certain style that digital will never be able to reproduce. Unfortunately, digital is the future, not because it is superior, but because of the cost saving that it entails, and the lack of modern anime artists.
Aren't you used to hear positive things? Almost everywhere I go, if I see Trigun, something positive is being said about it. I don't think it's as good as Cowboy Bebop, but I still think it's great, and the acclaim put behind it is what even made watch it.
I'm so glad that I have never let the animation of some of the older shows prevent me from watching them. I'd have missed out on some really great content! Classics!
I just finished Trigun (after seeing you recommend it) and it was sooooo AWSOME~~~ I can't believe I haven't seen Trigun before, what have I been doing with my life? And I call myself a anime watcher (tears). Thank you soo much Arkada !!! I love this channel!!!!
I can remember a scene in FMA: Brotherhood where a little black cat that looks exactly like the one in Trigun suddenly appears with a similar expression when somebody blasts through a wall and you see the cat fly through the rumble xD
I have been watching Arkada for years and i can tell you i have never seen him so happy and bubbly as with these last 3 reviews. I cant help but watch with a huge smile on my face. Awesome job Tristan keep up the good work!
The comparison with Gene Wilder's Williy Wonka was smart. He was very dark at points during that movie (such as the boat ride) and whimsical in others.
I just rewatched the DVD's, something about the old film grain style ages like a fine wine for me! They just don't make shit like this anymore it's a shame.
Trigun was always one of the best animes I ever watched growing up. It always had that perfect balance to me of action and emotion and story with that comedy in it to help keep the serious to a nice level that isn't overwhelming.
But didn't it change in the anime a couple of times...wait I'm thinking of the subs. I remember now, the subs kept screwing me up so I never really new which number was correct. On a side note, I can watch the Japanese dub w/no subtitle and still understand it, which is why I confuse the Eng dub b/c they both do it so well. btw I don't know japanese but I guess the subs are just ingrained in me lol.
Trigun and Bebop are inextricably linked for me because they both came out in the US around the same time, I think I even bought them together, and they both have amazing soundtracks (seriously-Trigun’s soundtrack can definitely stand next to Yoko Kanno’s magnificent work anyway.) sliiiiide guitar, baby! Also both voice casts were stellar-something pretty shocking at the time it was released
Hey Arkada I just wanna thank you for doing all of these Anime reviews for five days in a row. I really enjoy hearing what you have to say about Anime and if you released a video a day, I'd watch everyday... As I have been doing these past few days. But yeah thanks. I really appreciate what you do and your efforts to keep us entertained. Keep up the great work!
I pray to ALL THAT IS HOLY that this gets the Hellsing Ultimate treatment. Damn you FUNimation make Trigun Ultimate. I would buy it so many @!#% times. Make it now! PLEASE! Knives is so badass.
Funimation can't just dub/make another Trigun show that's up to studio Madhouse which probably won't happen cause the show wasn't really popular in Japan
I think it would FMAB would be a more fitting comparison then Hellsing Ultimate. While the manga is different from the anime, Madhouse did it on purpose and planned out the story from the start like FMA.
Now I can die in peace as one of my favorite animes was reviewed by my favorite anime reviewer. Thank you so much, Arkada for providing me with this pleasure.
Of all those episodes of watching Trigun, I LOOOVED listening to the opening song in each one. Seriously, if some anime shows had this type of instrumental tracks to their openings in this present time, I would not complain one bit...unless they are catchy. About DT, seriously, it's like I am listening to mixes of AC/DC and Pink Floyd. It's just amaziiiiing * W*
I'm pretty sure I saw this video when it came out and was like, "Yeah! It's on the list I"ll watch it . . .eventually." 2020 and now I stumble upon this again and just bought the series and movie. Can't wait to finally sit down and watch an anime that friends have been recommending for literal decades now!
Vash was my first cosplay back in 2004 or something like that. I was just talking to a friend tonight about remaking it because I want to see how much better I would do now after more than a decade of experience (and, I won't lie, because of nostalgia). Then stumbled on this video. Everything you say is true and more. I'm definitely remaking Vash for my next convention now. No if about it.
To be honest, how dated something's animation is, shouldn't keep people away from it. People fucking love Dragon Ball Z and that started nearly at the beginning of 1989.
Agreed. There's just something about the old hand-drawn animation that sucks me in. Granted, a lot of anime looks great nowadays, but I cant help but love how shows like Akira, DBZ, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun look. Dunno, might just be the aesthetic.
I seriously hate it when people don't check out *ANY* show, not even anime just any show, just because it's "old." Well shit By that logic one piece is old since it's 2015 and it came out in the early 2000's! I honestly dont disagree that modern animation is able to do things much more effectively then old school animation, but it doesn't make it bad! This animation is down right awesome, and so is the story! Not every anime has to be like AoT and have a budget big enough to buy a small country!
After seeing your video on Top 25ish Anime, I was suprised to see no review of Trigun. So, I watched it myself. And loved it. Nice to see you finally review it! Fun Facts: -Vash's revolver is based on the Italian Mateba 2006m. Yeah, that gun from Ghost in the Shell. There actually is a revolver made today that is the spiritual successor to the Mateba: the Chiappa Rhino, who's silver version looks even more as Vash's gun. Not only that, but having the barrel aligned with the bottom cylinder chamber practically eliminates recoil, allowing for accurate rapid-firing. -Trigun was actually much more popular in the West than Japan, and it alongside Cowboy Bebop were the first animes to have good quality dubs. -There is a Trigun movie made in 2010(?) that's dub used many of the same actors. Due to Western popularity of the show, it was more catered to us Westerners anyways. Funny it would use the Manga's art style, though, over the Anime's.
Yup, I work out to the opening theme. I just discovered the anime last year. I keep reminding my husband (we both love anime) to watch it, it really is a gem. With all the new anime I watch, the animation in older anime has always felt kinda nostalgic for me. It reminds me of my preteen days. I didn't know what it was at the time but it was new to me and I had never seen anything like it. It was amazing!!!!
That whole character dichotomy thing has my attention. It's why I enjoyed Dance in Vampire Bund so much. Mina Thepes literally is one of the most complex and realistic characters in anime just because she is constantly back and forth from a a cold hearted and manipulative Balalaika to an emotional and lonely long lost lover
Kor - Anything & Everything! i know, somewhere in my gosh darn heart of hearts that there is a director out there waiting to bring us a story like the 5. it doesn't have to be a masterpiece, i just want something to suck me in like this show did.
Everyone who thinks trigun is boring, had horrible taste. Seriously, it's not even opinion it's fact. The setting so unique in its self idk how anyone could get bored of this anime. Maybe they should stick to the shouting and powering up and yah rah bam! Animes
setting is not unique at all cowboy bebop had similar setting fist of the North star had better post apocalyptic setting and even the setting alone cannot make a show great and story is not that great either characters aren't that deep and masterfully crafted
Is the animation outdated? Yeah but I don't think it should stop anybody from checking it out just because the animation is outdated and not up to date like the new animes nowadays.
Man this is the most animated I've seen you in your reviews. Keep it up if you can, it was pretty entertaining. It's like you became a giant ham like our beloved Vash the Stampede.
The comments section for this video killed me. Everyones either trashtalking Trigun for really stupid and/or biased reasons or are talking about how Brotherhood is better than the original anime series. Trigun I watched only maybe a year back, and it's already among my favorite animes of all time alongside Spice and Wolf. It's a good fucking show, and it shows WAY more depth than, say, Rurouni Kenshin, a show that is similar in a lot of ways but never really hits as deep. Both shows use cliches, but Trigun actually adds its own personality to them, its own identity. Rurouni Kenshin to this day bugs me because it's so predictable. Trigun starts off seeming predictable, but starts shooting its cliche's in the kneecaps. I was proven wrong on multiple occasions about where the show was going. For example, I thought Vash would end up having some deep and pseudo inspiration reason for not killing. QUITE THE FUCKING CONTRARY, the show makes it clear that he's living a fools dream, and even makes a point out of how him refusing to kill people can at times actually make situations worse. Vash is stubborn. He's shown to be an imperfect character who's desperately trying to do the right thing, even when he doesn't know what that is, and that ultimately proves at times to be his major flaw. Vash is a human being, in other words; making him an excellent character. On a side note, regarding FMA, Brotherhood is, how do I put this, more shonen crap straight out of the ass of Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. The original series intentionally strayed away from the manga to try and give the show its own identity, and that they did. They presented a lot of original ideas and concepts, and actually one-upped the manga itself. Then the manga's writers got pissed off about how they took their idea and made it better, and ended up redoing the show to make it more accurate to the manga, and low and behold, it's a contrived and predictable mess now. I hate to break it to you guys, but just because something is more true to its source material doesn't automatically make it better. Attack on Titan, the anime, is vastly superior to the manga. In fact, the manga is downright horseshit. Among the numerous other issues with the series, it actually has our main characters blatantly ignoring SEVERAL MAJOR VILLAINS IN THE PLOT JUST CASUALLY TALKING ABOUT THEIR TITAN FORMS IN THE BACKGROUND. The manga treats this like it's NOTHING NOTABLE. It's fucking astounding, and yet I guarantee you'll still have people arguing for its superiority just because it's the written material. Horseshit. I don't care if it's written or if it's animated, one can be done better than the other at times, and both 2003's FMA and Attack on Titan the anime are vastly superior to their source material.
You do realize that Hiromu Arakawa, the author of FMA, was the one who encouraged the staff of the 2003 anime to do their own thing with it. It's one thing to prefer 2003 over Brotherhood, but at least respect the author herself because without her manga and her encouragement the 2003 anime would never of happened.
Yea I trigun about 2 years ago for the first time, right as I was getting into anime and it is easily one of my favorite shows. Same with evangelion and bebop, though trigun is easily the best of those 3 for me. None of my love for it is based on 90's nostalgia, I believe it is a great show that stands on it own merits. The animation is still passable for hand-drawn animation and is very consistent. For anyone who thinks hand-drawn is all bad, I would say watch GITS or Bebop those are great looking, let alone the old disney stuff which still looks good despite being 50+ years old. Though yea lot of hand-drawn stuff looks bad, but Trigun is atleast middling in anime hand-drawn quality For FMA I would have to watch them again but I really lump them together and don't really make distincition between the two they are simply different stories. What I think he is getting at for FMA though is that if you watch Brotherhood first it will be much harder to go back to the original than the other way around considering the animation and the fact that the first halfish is very similiar, which was a big reason I dropped Brotherhood half way through for a few months. I would also say that for everyone's bashing on it the First one is still a fantastic show, with a far less shouneny let fight the big bad, with an ending that is more unique. For AOT, I wasn't a huge fan of the show but I did check out the manga and I agree that it was pretty bad.
Sesshon Seizu I never said any names in particular. I referred to the people behind it in general, which is true. The people behind publishing the original manga did not like what came out of the 2003 series, so they redid it and ended up making their own which was more true to the manga.
I personally believe that the best trait of vash is his dept in character, and how the world shows the consecuences of his actions, how his philosophy led him to have a body full of horrible scars, proving that he actually means it, and that one does not simply has a philosophy like that in a hostile world with no consecuence. That's what I love about this show.
Dude, I just found your youtube channel..... And i have to say you deserve supreme kudos. Amazing review. Extremely on point and your reviews is incredibly entertaining. Keep up the AMAZING job.
Arkada, I think you're biased toward Trigun and Cowboy Bebop too much. I'm saying this as a fan of yours, not hating. I suspect it's a nostalgia thing since you grew up with these anime. Maybe they used to be the best during their time, but in today's standard they aren't so great anymore. I watched both shows mostly because of your recommendation and I expected to enjoy them like you do, but honestly they both are disappointingly boring. I must say I was intrigued with Trigun at first after seeing some of Vash's badass moves, and the later reveal about his past that *SPOILER* he's not a human and the main villain is his brother *SPOILER*, but this is torn down by the boring and repetitive progression, and inconsistency. The story will just follow a pattern of trouble happens -> everyone panic -> Vash save the day -> because he's badass, until at the last part of the show he got slapped around silly because the plot wants to. Having said that, I still enjoyed Trigun a lot more than Bebop. I was able to marathon Trigun to the end, but I can never get pass episode 8 of Bebop despite trying it 4 times.
I think you're probably right about the nostalgia thing. He does seem quite biased, but I think he's biased with good reason. I really don't agree that Trigun and Cowboy Bebop don't hold up to today's standard, especially Cowboy Bebop. And I think I can say this with a clean conscience because before my friends FINALLY got me to watch Cowboy Bebop, I was really prejudiced against the show and I mean REALLY. I hated the sci-fi genre, I thought the title sounded stupid (I thought it was gonna be something like "cowboys vs. aliens"), the main character's hair looked ridiculous, and it just looked so, so, so.....OLD and I couldn't STAND it. But when I finally did watch it, I found it to be the most enjoyable, cool, complex (because of the characters), funny, sad, sophisticated, and intelligent show I've ever watched. And even with all the newer awesome shows that have been coming out, I still hold that opinion. Since I've watched Cowboy Bebop, it has topped any and all favorite anime I have and has not fallen yet. I guess my point is, Cowboy Bebop DOES still hold it's own with today's standard and in a way, so does Trigun. The thing is, most people don't realize it because they're, well, OLD and it's easy to make early judgments against anything old. I know plenty of anime fans, fans who did NOT grow up during the 90s who love Trigun or Cowboy Bebop or both. Heck, you can even find people who don't really like anime that make an exception for Cowboy Bebop, I know I have. Maybe these two anime aren't the best anymore, maybe they never were, but nevertheless, both Trigun and Cowboy Bebop still have their well deserved places in the hearts of many anime fans. Yeah, they are old fashioned, but like a favorite character of mine once said, "people might just need a little old fashioned."
Ria Natsume Hmm I see. I'm a little different. I don't feel Cowboy Bebop is that old at all. Even to today standard, the art and animation are fantastic especially in the movie. The dub and music are top notch as well. My problem with it is that it has no hook. There's nothing that i find interesting enough to keep watching. 1. The world is uninteresting. The sci-fi elements are just there for the sake of being sci-fi. They can completely change the setting to wild west cowboy riding horses, and still have the same story line since it only focus on Spike's little group chasing one guy after another. A good sci-fi story would be something like Ghost In The Shell, where the sci-fi element really play a role in shaping the story. 2. The characters are uninteresting. Spike is just an above average guy who act cool. He's pretty good with combat but nothing on the level of Bruce Lee. He's not witty except when he's flirting with female characters. There's just nothing special about him. Everyone else are also just an average bounty hunter, except the little kid. I think the kid is the most interesting character in there. I can't help but imagine that if Bebop's world was a real world with billions of people in it, there has to be a much more interesting group out there than them. Just look at our world, there are so many awesome people with amazing skills and it's not a fiction. And yet in a fictional story with spaceships flying around, they give us a very unimpressive bunch. I'm not asking for super power or anything. I just feel like there's no characteristics that's interesting in these characters for me to keep following their adventure. After i've seen one arc, I feel like I've seen it all. Let me give an example, Desert Punk is one of my favorite show because of the characters. Kanta the main character is just a short, ugly, and perverted virgin bounty hunter. Despite having nothing good going for him, he can still survive the desert and make a name for himself as the Desert Punk, and get a hot girl at the end using his wit and persistence. It's interesting to watch his adventure because I can't predict what ridiculous trick he has to devise next against his enemies and rivals. His rivalry with other characters like Rain Spider and Junko is also very unpredictable and hilarious. 3. The story is uninteresting. There is no deep overarching story that things progress into, and nothing really special happen in each arc. I'm not saying that the Bebop never do anything grand. They practically save the world or at least a city from destruction on a daily basis, but the process of doing so is just uninteresting. There's not much tension going on through out the arc (at least from what i've seen, I only watched the movie and 8 episodes of the anime). Wait i shouldn't say that. There are times of danger that are supposed to be tense moments, but somehow the way they deliver it feel so safe. Even when Faye was captured and almost killed multiple times I don't feel any tension. I just feel like it's just another day for their bunch. There's not much desperation or sense of urgency going on.
Seyha Leonhartz Well really all that is just subjective. Honestly the moment you like something that in itself is bias, as well as when you hate something that is also bias. Still though nostalgia plays a factor in many things people hold dear, and it doesn't even necessarily have to be years old for nostalgia to form. Now before I lose my train of thought I should get on to the point. Well not liking the show or its characters does not really mean that the story or characters don't hold up to today's standards, well usually. Honestly I still love many of the characters of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. However I grew up watching Trigun, but not Bebop I watch that recently and I adore the characters. In the end though really it all comes down to opinion, and no one's opinion is really wrong. Although he did say that you might not enjoy these shows, but that perhaps you should watch them because they had an impact on Anime in the west. Much like looking back at history. Hopefully what I have written makes sense I sometimes have problems conveying messages.
I would hate to hear your guys opinions on movies from the 80-90s. I grew up with this...anime from the 80s, 90s, 2000s. But what is this "standard" that people keep referring to. Is it just a look? Or is it a style of writing that isn't keeping your attention? If its looks, I think thats pretty shallow thinking. There are lots of good things from the past that still hold up. This series is a battle of polar opposites. Yin and Yang shit. The small stories leads to the big picture. Seeing that Vash and Knives are super humans and a link between the plants that terraform life....neat to see. Help me out. I don't have time to watch the thousands of series out there nowadays. Recommend new Scifi to me.
There are always people foaming at the mouth to defend their favorite things. If you want intelligent debate you likely won't find it in a TH-cam comments section.
I'm a very, very fresh anime fan. But I've to quickly realize that older, hand-drawn animation simply looks better. Its got more grit, texture and atmosphere than most modern anime I've tried.
I watched it. And I don't know why I did because I did not really enjoyed it. At all. I found the show very boring and did not get it's point, but I guess that's just me (the same way I found Akira boring, sorry >.>). Not judging, just getting my opinion out there. :D And what you mentioned about Vash's determination for not taking someone's life reminded me of Tenma from Monster (which is one of my favourite anime). Also, I love how long your hair is right now! /o/ And I'm loving the review week of awesome! o/~
Some people found the tonal shift poorly executed, the ending lacklustre, and in a few instances, the characters irritating. Though many, many others found none of those things; only a really great, memorable TV show. I recommend you watch it yourself to form your own opinion. It's a little bit like Evangelion in that sense. (Yeah I know Eva was created with that intent but w/e)
Neil McInnis ive watched it and its in my top 5 list. I really enjoyed this series i can understand why to some the ending was a bit lacklustre but i expected that sort of ending so i'm satisfied, although i really wish they added a more backstory to wolfblood's character.
Wolfwood was supposed to be a mystery; which can be seen as a bit lazy, but with his Spike-like personality, I thought it fit. Wolfwood is probably one of the best supporting characters in anime, so it's very understandable to want to know more about him.
GreenSoap Even if he were to watch that version he would still need to watch some of the Madhouse version since it has 2 more arcs, and one of which is very important.
You know, GR, while I agree with most of your review, I have to disagree with your review on Trigun. In fact, I think trigun is one of the most overrated anime I've seen. I first saw Trigun back in 2004, and it just didn't leave any impact on me at all. It was just "OK". Fast forward 10 years later, and i completely forgot what the anime was about. recently, I gave it a second chance and re-watched the entire series. Then I know why I couldn't remember anything from this series 10 years ago; it just doesn't leave any lasting impression on me. The first 5-6 episodes are just blah. The series overall was light-hearted comedy, but not enough depth. The only episodes I enjoyed were the ones with Wolfwood. Other than that, meh. The anime didn't do a good job convincing the viewers on why the antagonist became the way he did. His experience overall just wasn't anywhere near enough for him to transform into this evil person. And the ending was a let down. In no way shape of form show this anime be comparable to Cowboy Bebop. Now THAT was a great anime!
+VF5 I understand why you feel that way. The anime does not pick up its pace until like episode 15. I too was disappointed with the ending. The whole "thou shall not kill thing" is getting ridiculous. SPOILER: Sure it makes sense, but even at the end, his own brother couldn't kill or manage to shoot his vital organs. The guy serving under Knives had no reason to follow Knives at all. In fact, I thought he was the antagonist the whole time until towards the end of the series. I mean he can control people with his mind alone, what makes him want to follow someone like Knives who is inferior to him. There are just some plot holes and some random irrelevent stuff that I feel like can be cut out. The 2 side girl characters had too much screen time too and they did even get annoying at some points in the show. Also, what's up with the pistol that can transform into a huge cannon??? That was never really clarifed. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the show. I would probably give it a 8/10 max.
One of my very favourites. An incredible artistic effort on every level. The story is beautiful, and the voice acting makes up for the flawed animation. A work of art from beginning to end. Your channel is good too.
While the comedy certainly was dated, there were a fair amount of jokes I found funny, and I respectfully disagree as I feel almost all the serious moments were handled brilliantly, and are the reason people love this show so much.
Serious moments were awful? Get the fuck outta here muppet. Lol the comedy is one thing but the actual drama of Trigun was not half assed or rushed in the least bit. If you want a purely serious anime you were an idiot of expecting it from Trigun in the first place, I bet you haven't even read the manga either.
Isley Joy I love the manga! I love Trigun! It's one of the few cases where I don't prefer one of the stories above the other, they both have stuff they do better than the other.
I finaly watched Trigun. Although I felt, that the pacing was a tad slow at times it's still a great watch even today. I really loved how Vash incorporated his never kill philosophy. He cares and so should you. Now do yourself a favor and watch it as well.
I remember seeing this back in the day, but because it was on a broadcast routine I never got to see many episodes. Now all the episodes are on Netflix and I can finally watch them back to back. While back in the day I thought the style was a little dusty, I love it now for the more classic design of anime characters. But the one thing that stuck with me most... is how more serious this anime was than I thought. I never got to see a whole lot of episodes, and most were the first few, so I thought it was just a bit of a comical adventure with our main hero. But boy, does it go dark halfway of the show, I didnt expect that, but it got me even more invested in the characters and story.
Ive seen alot of anime.over years and overlooked trigun. Took a ton of rso yesterday and later on i was watchin hulu i put trigun and apparently feel asleep and woke up at ep8 lol. Now i got curious about this show gonna check it out again from begining. Seems pretty good
I doubt you’ll see this, but I used to watch your reviews religiously! I don’t watch new anime as much as I used to (like when I was 13/14 versus now being 21) but I still rewatch my favorites such as trigun. thank you for your reviews over the years, they’re not only informative and honest but entertaining to watch.
I stopped watching when you said to go watch episode one and did just that. I'll tell you that I'm really glad I did. While I have always meant to watch Trigun, I never really got around to it. Now I'll probably end up buying it because holy shit. That is all. Also I can't tell you how happy I am to see you dropping the numerical scoring in your videos. People tend to see a score and only the score, forgetting the points made for or against the things being reviewed. Real happy with that. Keep doing a great job!
Trigun was the first anime that I ever watched. The four episode VHS was available at my local rental establishment back when it first came out. I rented it soooo many times. It has led to a lifelong love of the genre.
Silverio Martinez I haven't had the opportunity to read the manga, sadly. Any time that I have a little bit of money to throw towards my Japanese entertainment interests, anime always tends to win out over manga. I did, however end up picking up and reading the complete Ghost in the Shell manga (in hardback, no less). That was a really good read.
Great review, and I pretty much guessed that the only drawback worth talking about would be the animation, and now I'm curious about what you think about a) the Badlands Rumble movie and b) the impossible idea that Trigun could get a reboot someday that follows the manga.
It is now 2023 and the new anime Trigun Stanpede just release and I never watched the original. I made my goal to watch it before looking at the new show and despite a slow start (that is kind of entertaining enough to push you through the 10 or so episode of comedi before picking up in story) it is fun to watch until the end. It is indeed pretty damn amazing to get such a nice story and characters for such an old anime. You could say it still hold up even today. Thanks for the review! Watching Trigun the original was not a waste of time ;)
He said go watch the first episode I watched the whole show.
welcome to the party lol
I've just done. XD
You did the whole thing in 23 seconds?
3 years later and I also did the same thing. Amazing show
It do be like that
I LOVE the dated animation. It really hammers in the gritty, dusty waste-land setting and tone of the anime. It's why I can't watch the movie the same way.
Katelyn Pringle I agree
I agree. It makes it feel natural, even if it is an old anime, it still manages to never be a distraction or ever feel out of place.

Trigun's animation might be a bit sloppy at times - but holy crap, the final confrontation between Vash and Knives is one of the most amazingly animated fighting sequences ever made.
All their budget went there ha

@@chickenflavor9880 bruh what.

He knows the truth, but prefers the happy silly nonsense when he can have it
Trigun is, after all, a tragedy.
Su'cuy. I'd have to say that he is mostly the serious side with the silly side being his strategy of dealing with people he can't talk down.
Hand drawn > Digital
It's just so charming.
Technically it is hand painted.
If you want to see one of the best hand drawn anime, I'd watch the ova called Neo Tokyo. If I saw it with digital animation, it just would not work.
Anything before 95 outside big budget properties usually doesn't age well in the animation department.
thelinedrive That's only your opinion, and mine is that animation no matter how old it is is timeless. There's good and bad animation sure, but never outdated
ethan philpot
1. Digital animation has allowed a crapton of advanced camera movement techniques that were financially unfeasible before. Honestly, how many times have you seen truly elaborate camera movement in non-digital animation? I haven't even seen Attack on Titan, and this gif alone already makes me want to watch it: 25.media.tumblr.com/d254067896ce31df89d9232cf63fe807/tumblr_mrcckyG9R61qjqgyio1_500.gif
Note how the background moves the way it should in a 3D perspective.
It's good to see a positive review of Trigun for once. As much as I love cowboy bebop, I love Trigun just a little bit more
Aren't you used to hear positive things? Almost everywhere I go, if I see Trigun, something positive is being said about it. I don't think it's as good as Cowboy Bebop, but I still think it's great, and the acclaim put behind it is what even made watch it.
Really? U think its better
If u love Trigun watch kekkai sensen it's amazing by the same writer
I'm so glad that I have never let the animation of some of the older shows prevent me from watching them. I'd have missed out on some really great content! Classics!
I just finished Trigun (after seeing you recommend it)
and it was sooooo AWSOME~~~
I can't believe I haven't seen Trigun before, what have I been doing with my life? And I call myself a anime watcher (tears).
Thank you soo much Arkada !!! I love this channel!!!!
For those of you who don't know: There's a Trigun movie from 2010 produced by madhouse. Defenetly worth watching.
This anime is such a masterpiece. It's really a shame that some people don't want to watch it because of the old animation.
We call those people morons
I can remember a scene in FMA: Brotherhood where a little black cat that looks exactly like the one in Trigun suddenly appears with a similar expression when somebody blasts through a wall and you see the cat fly through the rumble xD
Ed's design is fairly similar to Vash. Blonde, red coat, mechanical arm.
Trigun.... A cult classic and one of the best anime ever
I just rewatched the DVD's, something about the old film grain style ages like a fine wine for me! They just don't make shit like this anymore it's a shame.
A lot of passion in this review. Really appreciated it.
Trigun was always one of the best animes I ever watched growing up. It always had that perfect balance to me of action and emotion and story with that comedy in it to help keep the serious to a nice level that isn't overwhelming.
Says the first episode, The $$60,000,000,000.00 Man is one of the best first episodes of all time. Proceeds to get Vash's bounty wrong.
I love the anime, seen it at least over 9 times and I've still yet to remember the correct bounty lol

Twenty billion? Now, it's been a while, and I've only seen the first two episodes, but I seem to recall the number being 60 billion.
Trigun needs no ultimate version . It is complete. Please look but don't touch. Don't make it into Indiana jones 4
broadwayat They haven't adapted Trigun Maximum. It could still get the Ultimate treatment, albeit incredibly unlikely.
I think it would FMAB would be a more fitting comparison then Hellsing Ultimate. While the manga is different from the anime, Madhouse did it on purpose and planned out the story from the start like FMA.
If they change the music I wont watch it. Trigun's soundtrack is iconic and should not be touched
Brotherhood is way better than the original FMA
Indeed it is.
The Homonculi in the original series are more interesting. But that's the only thing I think the original series does better than Brotherhood.
That it is,and the homonculi make more scene.
Woah, that's like, your opinion man.
FMA is FMA in my book, watched both, loved both
Okay thats it i'm watching this show again.
Are you going to review Yu Yu Hakusho?

Of all those episodes of watching Trigun, I LOOOVED listening to the opening song in each one. Seriously, if some anime shows had this type of instrumental tracks to their openings in this present time, I would not complain one bit...unless they are catchy. About DT, seriously, it's like I am listening to mixes of AC/DC and Pink Floyd. It's just amaziiiiing * W*
One of the best moments for me was Vash singing "Total Slaughter". :P
@@SirCap Akira had a specific shade of red name for it.

Fun Facts:
-Vash's revolver is based on the Italian Mateba 2006m.

Love your reasoning for not doing numerical scores anymore ark. keep the awesome reviews coming
These days, the double-sided nature of the characters can be called inconsistent writing by viewers who can't tell the difference.
Or worse, people try to say a flat, boring character is a double-sided and deep one.
Animes
setting is not unique at all
cowboy bebop had similar setting
fist of the North star had better post apocalyptic setting
and even the setting alone cannot make a show great
and story is not that great either
characters aren't that deep and masterfully crafted

Agreed especially the FMA thing since it was only mentioned and. Wasn't even the focus of the video.
Though yea lot of hand-drawn stuff looks bad, but Trigun is atleast middling in anime hand-drawn quality
For FMA I would have to watch them again but I really lump them together and don't really make distincition between the two they are simply different stories.
The people behind publishing the original manga did not like what came out of the 2003 series, so they redid it and ended up making their own which was more true to the manga.
thanks for that
I personally believe that the best trait of vash is his dept in character, and how the world shows the consecuences of his actions, how his philosophy led him to have a body full of horrible scars, proving that he actually means it, and that one does not simply has a philosophy like that in a hostile world with no consecuence.
That's what I love about this show.
Dude, I just found your youtube channel..... And i have to say you deserve supreme kudos. Amazing review. Extremely on point and your reviews is incredibly entertaining. Keep up the AMAZING job.
He's the $$60 Billion Man. Not the $$20 Billion Man.
I found it funny because Ark, summarizes the first episode which is titled the $$60 billion man.
Ria Natsume You, your the kind of guy the anime community needs more of. Respects others opinions and still manages to voices his own. Good job.
Ria Natsume
Hmm I see.
I swear, FMA fans, whether they prefer Brotherhood or 2003 seem to be incapable of actual debate.
I've seen both and personally prefer Brotherhood but I can see why people like 2003 more and fair enough.
It probably never will either sadly. 😒
There are always people foaming at the mouth to defend their favorite things. If you want intelligent debate you likely won't find it in a TH-cam comments section.
Fair point. Maybe I've just gotten too used to the sane side of the Type-Moon fanbase. ._.
I watched both, and I think they are equally awesome.
Your videos have somehow become even more enjoyable :D Keep up the good work! and I love how you've been uploading more regularly
I watched this anime around 2013 and i love that you covered it so well
Trigun is amazing
i hope you talk about Trigun Badlands Rumble also
darn he didnt :(
why do i feel trigun is like hellsing?
*Bang *Bang *BANG!
That's why
max101victory ooooo took me time to realize your message
Thank you for finally discussing Trigun! Definitely one of my favorite anime of all time :D
I'm a very, very fresh anime fan. But I've to quickly realize that older, hand-drawn animation simply looks better. Its got more grit, texture and atmosphere than most modern anime I've tried.
Nailed that top five list. Although, still not a fan of Evangeleon.
Couldn't get into that show
I watched it. /o/ And I'm loving the review week of awesome! o/~
This anime has a surprisingly large hate base, which is a shame
how come?
Neil McInnis i agree
I freaking loved this show. And it was down to your initial recommendation that I watched it. Frostylishious!
This og GR intro brings back some good memories from back when I started my anime journey
You should watch Hunter X Hunter.
The '99 version >:)
GreenSoap no
GreenSoap
Even if he were to watch that version he would still need to watch some of the Madhouse version since it has 2 more arcs, and one of which is very important.
GreenSoap Lol to be honest I like both versions about the same but they older one kind of make's me sleepy with it'ss slow pace.
Nah, its shit
trigun was extremely boring for me. couldnt make it past 8 episodes.
That's a shame, the final 5 or 6 episodes are the most amazing ones imo. That show really knew how to draw to an incredible close.
You missed out.
Your loss.
It is boring, but it kinda picks up the pace from episode 12
Ah yes. "Diablo". That was a good episode.... Gave Vash some veeeeeery good development.
I disagree I think neon Genesis is the most overrated piece of shit ever made
+VF5
I understand why you feel that way. The anime does not pick up its pace until like episode 15. I too was disappointed with the ending. The whole "thou shall not kill thing" is getting ridiculous. SPOILER:
Sure it makes sense, but even at the end, his own brother couldn't kill or manage to shoot his vital organs.
TRIGUN IS BACK with a great 3D studio who made land of the lustrous!
I hated this show. sure it had good parts, but the comedy was mostly boring or annoying, and pretty much all serious moments were awful :(
While the comedy certainly was dated, there were a fair amount of jokes I found funny, and I respectfully disagree as I feel almost all the serious moments were handled brilliantly, and are the reason people love this show so much.
Well you obviously in the minority on that opinion.
R U saying my favorite anime is shit!?? (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
I finaly watched Trigun.
Although I felt, that the pacing was a tad slow at times it's still a great watch even today. I really loved how Vash incorporated his never kill philosophy. He cares and so should you. Now do yourself a favor and watch it as well.
That intro jump scared me. Whew
This anime has been on my to watch list for awhile...you just convinced me to watch now.
Really been enjoying the review week of awesome. I've been watching an episode every night I get off of work and eat dinner. Thank you Tristan.
Keep doing a great job!
arkada your scaring me, 3 ANIMES IN A ROW U REVIEW IV SEEN
Trigun was the first anime that I ever watched. The four episode VHS was available at my local rental establishment back when it first came out. I rented it soooo many times. It has led to a lifelong love of the genre.
Silverio Martinez I haven't had the opportunity to read the manga, sadly. Any time that I have a little bit of money to throw towards my Japanese entertainment interests, anime always tends to win out over manga. I did, however end up picking up and reading the complete Ghost in the Shell manga (in hardback, no less). That was a really good read.
I watched Trigun several years ago it was one of the first anime I ever really watched. Now I want to go rewatch it xD such a great series.
Trigun is still one of my favorites to this day. It's worth a watch.
