I love how Kamina's death is so unexpected since he's in like ALL the promotional stuff for the show, it really caught me off gaurd
At the very beginning of the series we saw older Simon standing on the head of Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, but originally I thought that that was Kamina (because they looked super similar at that point). Thus it really caught me off guard when Kamina died before they got to that point in the series, all the way until the end of that episode I kept on thinking he was going to somehow survive those injuries.
A real man doesn't die when he is killed! A real dies when he is forgotten
People talk about him so much, I couldn't believe he'd die before the big finale at the end.

by ep 11 I was like man he gotta come back he was in the beginning of the show just watch
then I realised he is dead by ep 16 the time skip I was like alright then hes dead so it wasnt such a big shock since I thought he was alive the whole time but it was a shock
+Constant wolf, yeah, definitely. It was for the better though, his death was satisfactory and heart-wrenching, bringing him back would have demeaned this aspect of his character arc. We also did get to see him in Simon's mental illusion, so that was a plus. He wasn't really there in person, but he was there in spirit.

I had been hospitalized for suicidal behavior before watching the show.

Not only do I think it is a deep show, it is the deepest show.
Simon's arc makes me cry with my fist in the air every time I think about it.
I wear a drill around my neck to remind me that every day is a gift.
Gurren lagann didn't save my life, but it might have pre-emptively? I marathoned it during christmas break of freshman year and it left a lasting impression on me and all of my future anime habits. Anytime i'm feeling down i re-watch big moments(simon's "i'm me" speech is the main one for me) to make me feel better.
Stories like this ruin me. Hang in there, Jared. Yours may yet be the drill that will pierce the heavens!

Watching this made me rethink Kamina's "Don't believe in yourself..." speach. Kamina realises Simon idolised him so much he can't imagine himself being better than his hero. So he tells Simon to use himself(Kamina) as the mere grounding for his own(Simon's) greatness.
"Believe in yourself because I (your hero) believe in you"
Ive hated this anime only because of the ending, I did like it till it got to a certain point, I don’t think its bad but that ending really just rubbed me the wrong way but man is that foreshadowing gorgeous, they made that really cool.

Kamina noticed Simon has no confidence in himself, but a lot of confidence when he is with him (Kamina).
So Kamina tried to re-direct Simons confidence in Kamina, back to Simon himself:
Don't believe in you, who believes in me
Don't believe in me, who believes in you
Believe in you, who believes in yourself
Simon realized the meaning of those words after he recovers from the loss, where he stops trying to be like kamina and instead believes in himself.
It's not foreshadowing that the authors put in, it's Kamina trying to make Simon a better person for Simon's sake.
@@Hydranox it's only recently that I came to terms with the ending. For the longest time the ending was a sour note for me, and while it is still bitter, I get it. Nia dying proved Simon's resolve one last time. Sure, he could've brought her back. With the literal universe shaking spiral power at his command he could've brought back everyone, Kittan, the rest of Team Dai-Gurren, even Kamina. But doing so would only prove the Anti-Spirals right, that the Spiral races would eventually, recklessly, abuse the power of the spiral to the point of singularity. He could've been a god, but he chose to be Simon the Digger.
@@fangsabre I just recently watched the ending, and, even though it's sad in an obvious way, I understood it in some sort of weird way. I just sat there, speechless, thinking only about how clear it all was that it was gonna happen, and that Nia's death was unavoidable. And I found that Simon was incredibly mature at that moment, doing his duty to protect the universe by not abusing the power of the spiral. That is something that most people wouldn't be able to do. That's what made the epilogue so comforting, to know that the universe has advanced and progressed, but Simon the digger is still and will always just be Simon the digger. As he should be.
Gurren Laggan has helped me cope with depression and anxiety. As someone who regularly is doubting my own abilities, I realated instantly with Simon and his struggle to find his own voice. The show helped me deal with harder emotions by reminding me to not let it stop me from moving forward. I actually have a Gurren Laggan key fob to remind me to keep digging and to keep moving forward.

I'm honestly looking towards getting the drill as a tattoo.. I also suffer from depression, hell I told a friend recently who's been dealing with a lot of things that she needed to watch this anime... I've found so many people who need to watch this anime and most of them have never seen a single one.
I recently went to go listen to the theme song and I just started crying.. this anime has pushed me through so much and even right now with a lot of things going wrong all it takes sometimes is to be reminded that I need to keep digging!
its really not that TTGL isnt deep, its just that the majority of people who though it was dumb are too cynical to accept its message, no matter how it was executed they would have hated it anyway because they are too into the "darkness = depth" fallacy

TTGL is essentially a big "fuck you" to cynicism. It rejects the very notion of cynicism (embodied by Rousseau, Lord Genome, and the Anti-Spirals) and instead pushes a message of optimism and hope (embodied by Kamina and then Simon). In some ways, TTGL is the "anti-Evangelion". It was Evangelion that popularized the cynicism trend in anime, so it was only fitting that Gainax created the "anti-Evangelion" with TTGL. Even the Anti-Spirals have an almost Evangelion-like vibe to them.

Nia's story is a story of a wide-eyed optimist living what can only be described as the most miserable of miserable existences.
Liowa Nia had the biggest impact on Simon's growth as a character between Kamina's death and the timeskip. She was the only one who encouraged Simon to stop moping and become a person of his own. (And if you want something concrete, then well, she did cook.)
As for why Yoko didn't become Simon's GF... well I dunno if you noticed but Yoko doesn't exactly have the best track record of keeping her significant others alive. Maybe the entire point of her character arc was that she's much better on her own, without being defined by being someone's girlfriend.
@Liowa I think it's pretty obvious you only watched these characters at face value. The main reason Yoko and Simon never became a thing, surprise surprise, she loved kamina. She couldn't play the role of moral support for Simon when kamina died because she was already so ridiculously hurt by the death herself. She couldn't show Simon his true worth because she would be too busy comparing him to Kamina, since it was still so fresh in her mind.

Kittan treated him like a coward, as an example. Nia was monumentally important to the show, because as the guy who made the video said, she was someone with a fresh mind, someone who didn't know who Kamina was nor his impact on everyone, someone who only saw Simon as Simon and not as "the next Kamina".
Furthermore with the Spiral King, as far as we can tell the anti-spiral war that involved him was a fairly long time ago, and can possibly posit that he's been keeping himself alive through spiral energy over a long period of time. He wasn't a good guy, not entirely, he was someone who gave up in the end. Sure you can say he was keeping humanity safe by oppressing them, but ultimately, he was afraid of the anti-spiral and had given up, he didn't see the point in trying anymore, as a result were the fake daughters he kept, morally abhorrent, but what did it matter to him? It's kinda comparable to Endeavour from MHA in a way. It's about a man who ultimately gave up, then realised that giving up wasn't the right answer. Someone who caused pain and suffering for others because he gave up and pushed his whims onto someone else, someone who knows that nothing they do can make up for that pain and suffering, but trying no matter what even if you can't be forgiven, is in fact the ONLY way to be forgiven.
In THAT sense, Nia's also monumentally important to the story arc of not just Simon but the Lord Genome himself, she's a walking reminder of all the terrible things he's done, she's the one who he's ultimately trying for when he sacrifices himself. I don't think Lord Genome would have truly converted to "good" without her, even if initially to him all she was was a toy to pass the time.

it amazes me that people disliked the episodes following kanima's death. those episodes were where i went from thinking it was a pretty great show to being absolutely, hopelessly in love with it.
Exactly! I almost was looking forward more to Simon's inevitable character development than feeling bad that Kamina died. And it was so worth it
I never understood why people thought this was a mindless anime. It's an inspiring and philosophically brilliant work of art. I always watch it whenever I need a boost to motivate me to "drill through the heavens" and reach my goals or even just cope with loss in a healthy way with characters that can make me laugh and feel what I need to feel. Anyone who dismissed this show without watching it all the way through cannot properly judge it and I've noticed it is those without the mental fortitude or with closed minds that fail to complete it, cheating themselves of an opportunity to grow their empathy and worldview to a more positive outlook.
Because for some people comedy has no depth, that in spite of it being one of the oldest, richest and widest applied forms of artistic endeavour we as a species have.

My favorite scene throughout the entirety of gurren lagaan was actually the scene in where Simon was trapped inside his fantasy and he had to choose whether to live in a fantasy world or return to reality. It really brought a lot of strong emotion when Simon got to talk to Kamina again and shared a heart to heart moment which made me just melt. Despite all the over the top epicness that will always be one of my favorite scenes in the anime.
One of my favourite scenes as well, the whole thing came full circle and concluded Simon's development. Really nicely done.

I liked the whole chain of scenes where everyone was in their own dream and one by one they leave their dreams behind like "there's somewhere I have to go".
Virals dream hit hardest for me, he just wanted to live peacefully with a family. Which contradicts what you would expect from the character near the early stages of the show.
and "Beast men are unable to reproduce, so they can never have families. Viral will live forever, but it will be an eternity of isolation which is utterly heartbreaking."

Gurren Lagann is essentially based on one thesis: There are people who will fear potential and try to diminish it, but they will fail, because they lack said potential.
In a way, it's the antithesis to Itou Junjis Uzumaki.

+Arthur Azevedo Lima it's a good review. I always held Gurren Lagann in really high regard for a long time but I lacked the ability to describe or pick apart it as a piece of media. Right as I was gaining those skills, Guy's review came out and it felt as if it was exactly what I was trying to articulate.

Rossiu should have died
Bleh... no it was the worst part of the story.. Rossiu was just a pathetic, moronic tool. I get the reasons he did what he did, but they were all totally fucking incompetent on every level, as well as so heinously, morally wrong. You are under attack by a new threat that kicked your super ultra new mech's asses, you have only one weapon that you know can defeat them... yes let's just kill off the best damn pilot for it we have just some some publicity stunt.
This isn't even "Oh it would work in our world" type deal, because even then.. what the hell asshole? Remove Simon from power... sure... MURDER him!? For no damn reason, when he is your best damn hope for survival against a new threat? Even before this, Rossiu was being a whiny little tool, bitching at anyone not acting how he thought they should act, failing to hold up to the arbitrary standards he decided they should have.
I can't see how anything he did is supposed to make the least bit of sense in any remotely intelligent way.
@7Seraphem7 Sometimes people make mistakes. When they do others often see the mistakes as not making sense. So the story did it's job on you.
My favourite part was the episode where they get trapped in their perfect worlds but every world has one mistake and in the end kamina comes to save them. That wasn't kamina obviously but I found that episode very poetic and virals dream was really sadand I felt bad for him. I watched this show eight years ago and I am not a big fan of mecha anime but this is one of my favourite anime.
That was one of my highlights of the series as well, and my favourite scene in the final battle sequence for sure.
The tunnel breakthrough story was my favorite part.
As Simon told it, Kamina kept his cool while everyone else panicked, which reassured Simon and allowed him to dig them out.
But as Kamina told it, he had no confidence at all and was merely putting on an act.
The fact that Simon believed in him and dug them out inspired Kamina to really try to become the kind of man he pretended to be. In a very real sense, Kamina believed in Simon, who believed in Kamina; while Simon believed in Kamina, who believed in Simon.
My favourite episode is definitely Adai village episodes in general, and the end of the first arc and start of the next arc
Unlike most people, I actually wasn't impressed by the show until that episode. It was ehn. The Adai village episode really blew me out of the water though with how good it was. And after that episode, I don't think I immediately liked the show either, it was a one-time instance. Then I started getting really hyped and into it in episode 7 (episode 6 was not great to me) as the story was obviously nearing the end of it's first arc, and almost more importantly, the story was picking up.
Episode 7 was really bringing to the forefront most of the good I saw in a show I thought was decent. A LOT of good stuff was in episode 7 and 8 that was really making me truly get into it like I hadn't been able to.
And then Kamina died....and I knew it was the best decision the show had ever made.
The following episodes, the depressing ones? I'd say those are actually my favourite. The show suddenly gained a whole new layer of depth and character and it was beautiful, and made me love Kamina more than I ever did up to that point. Nia came in, and Nia is like the best too.
Almost every episode that comes after Kamina's death is amazing, and all of it wouldn't have been possible without that single moment. Even the grand and amazing finale (By the way, note how Spiral Power makes more and more sense and technologically/scientifically valid with rules that define it, bringing up the consequences of Spiral Power, and mindless evolution like Kamina had, and as the story goes on, explaining everything the characters do earlier and in the later episodes...which is poignant with how the nature of the Spiral Nemesis is as a villain and who he is) which I so loved is because of Kamina, and because of his death.
So ya: Adai village is something that made a grand impression when my impression wasn't even good, the end of the first and start of the second arc are the most powerful and monumental episodes in the series, and everything great stems from those episodes. I'd even say it makes the episodes before it better, especially on a second watch.
TheVsagent This is a great point, and one that tends to go overshadowed by a lot of what came after it. A great microcosm of the two characters and how they supported each other.
OnimaxBlade The village of Adai episode was easily my favourite of the first 6 or 7. It gave a great insight into how oppressed these people were and I love my worldbuilding, so it fit what I was looking for.
And I agree on the episodes after Kamina's death. That middle stretch was easily my favourite of the series for what it achieved, despite how much flack it gets sometimes. Very powerful.
Saying this show is too over-the-top crazy to be taken seriously is like complaining a roller coaster isn't like riding on a bus.

I actually kinda liked the way the show dealt with Kamina's passing. I mean, you really get to feel like Simon does. Like they all do. And you see how the world starts looking more bleak. And how they get aimless. It's just good story telling. And presentation.
BestGuyEver has expressed this disagreement with TTGL's perception as "mindless fun" as well, so it's great seeing others championing that viewpoint.
His analysis on this was great, though it's unfortunate that it was needed. It's not really that hard to see the nuance and depth, so I wonder at times why the perception of TTGL being mindless comes from. Ah well.
+Aleczandxr The same place from where the perception that Lelouch is a genius: the story, which presents him that way. For me, Lelouch is just an arrogant trickster and people can't see that because they take the show at face value. Same happens to TTGL: because the show makes fun of itself most conclude the show is foolish, even people that actually like it. That's called an informal fallacy.
So I wonder, do people really dislike this show because they think it's mindless fun or because they actually crave mindless fun and this show does not deliver?
I'm saying that people who call a show "mindless fun" basically say: it's entertaining but not my type of entertainment, so they acknowledge that they only seek to entertain themselves when watching a show, nothing more. So whatever show they watch and like, is mindless fun for them, even if they don't call it that, not matter if the show has substance or not, because they don't use their mind when judging shows anyway.

They see mindless fun because from moment to moment that _is_ what keeps you watching it. It's only when you sit back and look at it as a complete work that you see more. You can't watch one moment or one episode of the show in isolation and get the not-so-brainless bits. It's gotta be seen as a whole.
At first, Kamina is just a brash, hilarious good guy with a hot streak and a big mouth. Early in the series you even might think the narration before each episode is talking about Kamina when he talks about the series being a man's journey. By the end, Kamina is a legend within the show's universe, an inspirational martyr that drove an entire revolution to a stupidly huge scale. Of course there's nothing wrong with just enjoying it on the "mindless fun" level either; it's really fucking good either way, which is what makes it a truly great anime.

If i were to have to choose an anime to represent anime, i would pick Gurren Lagann. I think the idea "kick logic to the curb and do the impossible" perfectly describes the seemingly limitless potential of animation. An animation doesn't have the same physical constraint as a movie. Gurren Lagann is only possible as an anime. Animators can animate whatever the fuck they want without having to abide to the laws of physics of the real world.
thats basically how i explain my love for the medium. people are always like "anime doesn't follow logic or real-world rules" and my response is "thats the fuckin point." everyone likes the marvel movies these days for basically the same reasons
This is backed up even further by the absolute banger of a theme song that's all about those who accept and kneel to fate vs those who choose to "Row row fight the power" that is inspiring even just listening to that one song
@@quinnmarchese6313 Exactly! As if dialogues between characters in live-action movies are reflective of real-life human behaviour. Live-actions oftentimes set up unrealistic expectations of social interaction and standards as well as reinforcing prejudice in some cases.
I think the genius of Gurren Lagann was the fact that they could hide such a deep, emotional, and thematic masterpiece inside something that looked like a simple, silly, generic, explosion filled action show.

Kittan is my favorite because of the line, "So this is the power of the Spiral. Not bad, not bad at all." Its clear through the series that some people have a much closer connection to Spiral Power than others.
Kittan never really had that connection. So to see someone who is a regular joe rise to the challenge and unlock spiral power... particularly such an amount of it... its a nice microcosm of the message of the show. Kittan represents the same thing all of Gurren Lagann represents. The ability to preserve and advance despite all obstacles.
So in a way no one died gurren lagann without impact. Unlike other animes where character dies for shock value, Kamina though dead became a symbol of belivee and unity, Nia death meant even with death we should still pursue what is right even after death our Ideals transcend everything in the gurren lagann world COOL.
well the other mooks in team Gurren Lagann who died in the space battle weren't as tragic.

There's good shows that are just mindless fun, and there are good shows that are deep, thoughtful reflections. And then there are great shows that manage to somehow do a bit of both and make it look so effortless that sometimes you won't even believe there IS something more behind it.
I've always found TTGL to be an inspirational show with some deep themes, while everyone else around me just sees it as an over the top, fun show. It makes me happy, on the rare occasion, to see people like you take away the same things I did from this anime.

I feel like most people take those deeper parts from it, but on recall, its often just a powerful amazing trip, the big focal point being its utter acceptance of shonen tendencies and embrace of power creep to the extreme, which is the result of all the forms of growth throughout the show, the big drill is just the most obvious growth
Yeah to me TTGL is foremost inspirational and it helps me pick myself up when I start doubting myself and humanity as a whole.

This is proof that a story can be great no matter how over-the-top or sexy it gets. I know most people will push aside this anime as mere giant-robot and booby fanservice so I really have to thank Mister Alecz for seeing the greatness that many of us saw in it and decided to go deeper and further elevate our love for this anime. This basically how I feel about Kill La Kill when I thought I would hate it, except there was no amazing Kamina to drag you through the first couple layers of "WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?" People complain that Ryuko could turn into a rocket, but the rules were so loose that why couldn't everyone else? And digging deeper reveals some great commentary on what friends and family are, what the human spirit can accomplish, why fascism reduces people to cogs in a machine... all while being fucking great.
And while KLK doesn't have a single defining moment quite like Kamina's death, it is basically Gurren Lagann's mirror image. Instead of having one person that you consider family like Simon, who learns to accept himself and then everyone around him as his family that he has to defend, you have Ryuko who can only accept herself, on a quest to avenge a father she never had a connection with, finding that see can rely on her friends. It's the opposite right down to the societies portrayed - Gurren Lagann's future society is incredibly individualistic, and rejects Rossiu for trying to control them; KLK quite literally forces even the strongest, most resistant people to become nothing more than monsters that look exactly the same, losing all individuality.
I can't really comment since I haven't seen KLK, but it's great to see when an anime makes someone so passionate about it. It seems like an interesting dynamic you've described there.

IMHO KLK is the reflection of Gurren Lagann in other ways too. For example TTGL is strongly centred around a 'masculine' kind of imagery - drills, ahem XD. On the other hand however KLK has a female cast taking front and centre and is focused around a more traditionally 'feminine' kind of imagery - clothing, fashion, sewing and so on. Satsuki is a realist like Rossiu who has however the charisma and mettle of Kamina, and is faced by the hot-headed but overall not very popular Ryuko. I also think it has some very interesting ideas about clothing as a metaphor for social control and peer pressure (from uniforms to fashion), expressed of course in the usual guise of absolute madness, over-the-top battles and crazy action-comedy scenes.
That's... actually very accurate. Especially when you consider that Satsuki is basically the epitome of Japanese womanhood, except debatably her personality. She doesn't consider these a burden, but uses them as a tool, a lot like Kamina uses the manly principles of never giving in and never running to achieve his goals. Simon and Ryuko both kind of accept that they have to use these tools as well, though their attitudes are nearly opposite of each other.
Damn, these animes are like circles within circles. "Again, it's like poetry... sort of they rhyme."
Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Kill La Kill comprise a decades-spanning meditation on the same themes.
Man I almost quit after Kaminas death but glad I didn't, an amazing show and was awesome to see Simon grow up to be as great if not greater than Kamina truly a masterpiece of story telling in a anime

Although Simon coping with Kamina's death was depressing and the slowest moment of the series, it is all worth it to see his redemption when he realizes he is a person seperate from Kamina. I felt Simon's despair and I cheered when he recovered.

I really thoroughly enjoyed TTGL and I don't care what other people say about it because it now holds a special place in my heart. Ps. There are 2 movies of Gurren Lagann. They basically recap the series, but each movie has about half an hour of new animation and kind of guides events in a different direction, plus the new ending fight between Super Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann and Anti-Spiral was epic. I wouldn’t say it was as good as the show, as it felt rushed, but it was still very good. Also, it has no English dubs, for whatever reason.

Gurren Lagan story is driven by advancement and that’s why the creators wanted to make sure that by the end there is nothing more to see or do. (Becoming as big as the universe)

The cool thing about Gurren Lagann is that its deep but it doesn’t shove it in your face, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is always a good thing.
Quite timely to find this channel right when i finished this show. I've also had Gurren Lagann on my plan to watch list since i started to watch anime. I've always dismissed it as just some over the top action show that i would watch one day just because i was bored. That's the perception i had of it from a lot of people and a review i watched a long time ago from Glass Reflection. After i watched it myself i can't understand how someone can boil down a show with so much to say to just mindless action. Yes its crazy and over the top but never has crazy and over the top been used so effectively to tell a story with so many interesting themes and messages. Between this and the netero episode you got yourself a new sub.

While everyone is welcome to their opinion and I can tell a lot of work goes into GR's videos, I do think he criminally undervalued some very important aspects of the series (perhaps even the point of the whole series). Ah well though, not everyone is going to like everything.
Really loved the population conflict with older Rossiu, it was really interesting! The chief of Adai village sacrificed Rossiu's mother thinking that nobody would miss her, except Rossiu did. Rossiu sacrificed Simon thinking nobody would miss him, except he (and the rest of Gurren Lagann) would've. So in the end, Rossiu finally chose to sacrifice someone he knew nobody would miss- himself. But he was wrong again, and that's where Simon comes in to stop him. Not to mention the parallel between Rossiu sacrificing himself to fix the population problem, and Adai village sacrificing to keep their population at 50. That, and how if Rossiu hadn't dragged the humans out from underground to count them, the world wouldn't have gone under attack as fast. God damn it's just such an interesting and tragic arc

Another mature theme I noticed that was subtly implemented was the show's take on conflict. Whoever the antagonist was -- the village leaders, Lordgenome, Rossiau, or even the anti-spiral -- there was never ill will or greed motivating them; they simply disagreed in one way or another. The village leaders were afraid to fight the beastmen and figured it was best to lay low and not get involved. Lordgenome was afraid the anti-spiral would anhilate humanity, so he kept them underground. The anti-spiral was afraid of the universe collapsing, so they renounced their emotions for what they saw as the common good. The short dialogue Simon has with the anti-spiral after defeating it exemplifies this: (not verbatum) the anti-spiral says "so that's how it's going to be.... please tell me you won't destroy the universe" and Simon replies "humanity isn't that stupid"
I cannot put into words how much on point this video is. TTGL is a great coming of age story, touch on loss, loss of innocence, loss of those you look up to, and the struggle to find resolve and move forward.
Like a drill hitting a hard spot, it may be tough, but you have to power through it and find your own way - even if it diverges a bit from what you had originally planned.

Literally everyone I’ve seen on the internet talks positive about this show. I see literally nobody out there ever giving this show flack for how obnoxious and over the top and annoying it is. You obviously haven’t watched a lot of videos on the internet because so many people lick this show’s penis and give it praise because they’re all autistic freaks who live in their moms basement.
Maybe the only people I’ve ever seen talk negatively are Omnichromatid, DXFan619, and Animerica (Will Ryan + JT Kamp) in which two of those TH-camr’s never even made videos actually explaining plot reasons why this show sucks. You hit the nail on the head. I'm the type of viewer who isn't a big fan of over the top action and fan service but this serious is so much more than that. I went into this series with admittedly low expectations and was blown away. I honestly wasn't a Kamena fan and was shocked by his death but I felt it was the best decision the serious could make at the time. I really enjoyed the ensuing episodes due to the depth of the situation and the themes I didn't expect being presented. I'd be willing to say that Simon's character development is among the best I have ever seen in anime and was really a joy to experience. I honestly expected the series to end with the death of the spiral king so when it happens so early I wasn't sure what to expect but the sociopolitical aspect was another amazing surprise waiting for me. I really enjoy deeper, mature themes and was not expect them to be present in this series. I really appreciate that these aspects of the series are what you chose to highlight because I truly feel they are the understated strengths of the series. I really enjoy your videos (I might have watched them all) it seems we have a lot in common as we like the same series and I find you saying things I've thought about while introducing me to new ideas I hadn't pondered. Keep up the good work brother.

I'm going to have to say that I agree wholeheartedly with your analysis of Gurren Lagann. What struck me, however, was the seamless blending of Carl Jung's self-actualization with Friedrich Nietzsche's will to power into a single, coherent philosophy. Usually, when philosophy gets injected into anime, you get obtuse paradoxes discussed by smug characters, trying to make themselves seem deep. Gurren Lagann is quite the opposite. You have remarkably deep ideas masquerading as a shallow, goofy, nonsensical show about bouncy boobs and giant robots. People who say Gurren Lagann is good as long as you don't think about it too hard are missing out. The deeper you delve, the better it gets.
Good point about the philosophical integration. I did notice that but decided against mentioning it because I haven't studied philosophy for a number of years and need to brush up before making any substantial comments on it. TTGL really does display self-actualization with aplomb.
The dream eater tree(I forgot the damn things name) situation, everyone in idealized worlds, that was a powerful moment seeing them choose life with its flaws, and then there was Simon, with that twisted vision of Kamina
As for don't think about it too hard, most people say that in warding for the first few episodes where its largely "WTF WE JUST SMASHED A ROBOT INTO A ROBOT TO MAKE A BIGGER ROBOT WHY DOES THIS WORK THIS MAKES NO SENSE", the show does deserve a deeper look

One of the many things I love about Gurren Lagann that I haven't seen other shows do in the same way (I've seen some anime, not hundreds so maybe there is something similar out there other than Kill La Kill or maybe Space Dandy) is balance the tone so that it parodies tropes and archetypes while also being a love letter to them. The show is able to be over the top and very silly but the emotional beats are played with absolute sincerity. A series like FMA: Brotherhood (which I do think is awesome) seemed to struggle with making its goofy humour seem organic - there were often distinct "funny" moments that stood out against what was quite an in depth and fairly dark narrative. Gurren Lagann takes you on such a wild ride that the goofiness of its characters (even Kamina was a huge doofus on many occasions) makes you care about them all the more. Avatar: TLA had a similar vibe of silly characters who are able to sell genuine drama, but it doesn't have the same tone of parody that TTGL masters. If anyone else can recommend another series with a similar tone that would be great.
I didn't think too much of Gurren Laganns overall story first time, but it was a crazy ride and Kamina's death definitely had an impact, as well as his relationship with Simone where it helped me grow a new mindset and outlook on life when interacting with people, a more outwardly encouraging demeanor I'd lacked before. Second time watching it when I got older, I started to realize; this show can be rewatched multiple times in your lifetime and by different kind of people, and you'll find different meaning out of it.
The story almost feels like it's told from Simone's perspective, the first bit is kinda nonsensical, goofy and crazy, you got scenes like Kamina pulling the longest katana ever and each "deadly" fight is just another adventure without any danger. Then you hit Kamina's death and things get serious, Simone starts realizing everything isn't an adventure anymore until he starts taking responsibility.
Then skip forward in time when he's older, the story matures, everything feels like it has more depth and detail, like he's remembering things more clearly and from an adult's perspective of the situation instead of a kid that can't truly grasp it but has glimpses of it, but every situation everything is fine turns into a fun memory.
When I rewatched it the time before Kamina's death brought me back to the time I first started watching it, when I was slightly more naive or narrowminded, also in a bit of a darker place at times too, and the time when of him being an adult the story felt more at home with me as something more current. I've never had an anime give me such a feeling which is amazing, couple that with its artstyle that is really interesting. It's almost blurry without necessarily being bad animation, like it's a memory and it's hard to truly remember the scenes fully with its movements.
Another part that got me was the end with Simone passing on his drill necklace, and something hit me that I hadn't thought of before second time watching it. The show gives a light message about passing on from generation to generation with the spiral kinda being a theme with anti-spiral sorta trying to break it by reducing humans to the point of not wishing to achieve anything hence nothing to pass on.
We all go through that spiral, start at the top and go out the end, and we all do our part to dig through, but it's important to eventually "let go" and realize no matter how seemingly unready the next generation is and how much they stumble; you were once there too and had to go through it, just as the generation before you, and that in the end you'll have to pass on what you've done and all you can do is give them the courage while you live to continue on. And so it goes on.
It might sound very deep and overthinking it, but if you go into the mindset of Kamina's dad passing on his courage to him, Kamina to Simone and later Simone passing on his legacy in the form of his drill, literally "retiring", you get a sense of that it's less solely about Simone and him going beyond to achieve his goals, but that whoever's courage passed down to him still lived on and kept it going then entrusting it to the future generations at the end.
At the end, you see Simone as an older man with a kid, and it pretty much hits home as he learns to use his the same drill Simone used, even if for a very simple usage (which again, Simone did too) and then looks out in awe at the mechs in the sky wondering if he can join, which Simone reassures him in an encouraging way. That small scene I feel tells a pretty big picture of the story I feel most miss, like a small summary, that even if someone like Kamina or Simone are gone, or Kamina's dad and so forth, their actions encouraged a new generation and all their deeds lives on, that that's what's important when striving to achieve something; to never give up, remember those along the way and most importantly, pass it on, cause you can't be at the top of the spiral forever.

I have watched this show more times than I can remember, cried at the emotional parts, been angry at the bad decisions of characters, looked into the real world influences in theoretical physics that the second half take and I never ever get sick of watching it. Thank you for breathing love into this and for beleiving in it for what it is a surreal romp through all aspects of the characters and the themes.

Even the culture established in Jiha village for the first episode resembles the allegory of Plato’s cave, where one man finds the exit to the dark cold cave he had always known to find the wonders of the outside world, but when he returns to tell his fellows about it, they laugh at him as a fool and tell him that outside doesn’t exist because the cave is all they have ever known.
In the show, Kamina’s father found a way to the surface and asked Kamina to come with him, but Kamina, still a scared child, shied away and so was left behind in Jiha. Kamina is a character who is all about spitting in the face of the impossible and rolling with the punches and it’s clear where this characterization comes from.
I don’t know how you can get through 27 episodes of the show and not see the throbbing heart at its core.

It's basically gainax combining their other 2 successes. It's like if Evangelion occurred in the world of fooly cooly, and I loved it for that
as a kid, this was my first ever anime I’ve watched. Before I knew what depression is, this anime thought me what depression is and how to deal with it. It thought me everything I know today. This anime helped me mold me and how I act. This anime will always have a special place in my heart.
This show is nothing, but phenomenal, the way it mixes characters, the sci-fi premise the themes and messages in an over the top louder than life manner is nothing sort of phenomenal. Some of the best character designs, memorable pieces of dialogue and phenomenal action scenes that leave you just thinking "FUCK YEAH!".
I always remember the story of Simon and Kamina almost being buried alive where Simon just stayed focus and kept drilling. We all have a drill in our hearts, it's when we give up/stop drilling that we actually loose and forget what's important/get buried under the rocks.
Timeless message, timeless show.
honestly my favorite part of this anime has to be the message it gives to anyone watching it. On the whole this anime is a great inspiration type anime that says SURPASS THE IMPOSSIBLE AND PIERCE THE HEAVENS WITH YOUR DRILL!

These characters mean so much to me, and it always makes me sad to see critics boil it down to fanservice and stupidity. Also, Rossiu's arc is by far my favorite part of the show. I was always more interested in his role as an element of the shows writing than his actual psychology. Because as a plot device he showcases how you can screw up a show by overdoing a deconstruction. There's nothing enjoyable about him and nothing to look forward to, but he is at the center of the story. I will not like if I say that the main reason I didn't enjoy evangelion is Shinji. Alas I admit I never been depressed so I had no basis to connect to this behaviours and even though they are all rational they don't make the plot interesting. But since the plot never tries to be interesting on it's own and rather pushes the responsibility onto the side characters, my reception might be a bit stronger than it should.

The episodes after kaminas death are some of the best written episodes and story developments in any anime u said it perfect they paced it and colored it the right way nd they didn't brush it aside we actually got to see Simon's growth as a person in a way that was beautiful
This is my favorite anime of all time. I watched it first when I was 13 and thought it was cool that mechas can be spaced sized and believing in yourself sounds pretty awesome. I've watched it many times since and it only gets better, but I just rewatched it a week ago, and my lord it's so much deeper than it first leads on. Its themes about life, love, and the human condition are things to live by. It's quite honestly my gospel.

Subscribed because of this video. Spot on man! I totally agree and emotionally connected with Gurren Lagan like you did.
Episode 8 was absolutely fantastic for me and it's why I recently went on a 6 hours binge watch to finish the whole show in one sitting. When you sum up everything about Simon and Kamina around that time, how Kamina's and Yoko's relationship broke Simon, although he tried to keep it in because "It's none of" his "business" yet he really cared and felt left out by his own bro because of his cowardice, then these repressed emotions bothering him during the fight, then Kamina snapping him out of it and dying during the battle and Simon thinking that it's all because of him. A gut punch only comparable to some of the deaths of characters from shows like Jojo's or the YouKnowWhoseDeath in Fullmetal Alchemist.
I had a similar experience, a friend suddenly asked if I had watched it before I knew what it was, and I pushed off watching it for years and years for a singular reason: I hate mecha anime. I dunno why giant robots rub me the wrong way, but they do, its just not appealing and I eventually wound up disliking everything that showed a giant robot in it. Gurren Lagann on the other hand was a real treat to go through, I'd recommend it to any anime fan.

So ive been watching quite a few of your videos lately and ive just got to say that you do such an absolutely wonderful job dissecting all these different shows and showing me so many deeper perspectives on shows i grew up watching and how you have given me a new drive to go back and rewatch so many different animes/shows in a new light and to draw my own perspectives/views on different characters and the whole theme of shows that shaped who i am as a person 13 years in the making till now. I like scrolling through the comment sections and finding how people interpret some plot choices, overall story progress, what it means to the characters and the different messages people are getting from the show.
Personally, I have only one take from the ending of the show.
Moving on is a difficult thing, especially knowing your background, what you've been through and all. But don't let it stop you on your tracks to moving forward, don't let it blind you from seeing the people around you who you should be fighting for together, and don't let it extinguish the passionate fire burning inside you.
Just knows that things you dreamed of could may not be real, things that you worked on could be destroyed or never see the light of days, people who you are with will come and leave eventually. But that's why you should cherish it while you can and find something special to learn from before letting it go. Who you used to be shouldn't dictate who you're suppose to be right now, what you used to work on shouldn't dictate what you should be working on right now, people who used to be with you shouldn't give you the reason to not look for other people who are with you right now.
Something's are not worth pursuing, especially if it just puts you at a standstill or worse, spirals backwards. Sometimes, it's best to accept that things are just the way they are, then strive for something new to pursue in a world filled with endless possibility and keep moving forward without holding onto something that's holding you back. No matter how dear they are to you.
That's how you never give up and aim to breakthrough the limit.

Still one of the greatest animes EVER made. 27 episodes of Epicness. The show really starts after Episode 8. 10/20/30+ years from now, people will still talk about Gurren Lagann just like you'll see with Code Geass, DBZ, Saint Seiya, etc.

What I like most about Rossiu and Simon's interactions is that it highlights that the people that are necessary to take power (Simon) are not necessarily the best people to keep it. Simon is a great revolutionary, but he didn't really know anything about governance. Rossiu at the very least understood a bit about the sacrifices necessary to keep society functioning.

I always really loved this series, from way back when I watched it for the first time 10+ (i think) years ago up until now. I've rewatched it countless times, and I always cry when I watch certain parts of it. It is ridiculously over the top, it's silly, it's heartfelt. I love it.
Personally, in the beginning episodes I was all for Simon and his timid nature. Kamina was a nice addition that really exposed Simon's timidness and it was amazing to see him come out his shell to fight alongside Kamina. I just feel that Simon is underrated in the beginning episodes. I mean, that's when I liked Simon the best.

I just finished episode 27 of gurren lagann and I have to say that this took the #1 spot on my favorite anime list. This show (especially the last episode) hit my heart so hard it made me cry ALOT of tears of joy. It was fun, sad, and full of hope. Truly a beautiful story
Finally, I found someone else that really understands Gurren Lagann.
Sure it's full of mecha fanservice (I personally love that kind of stuff) and over the top characters and battles but all that just makes the deeper themes of the anime more enjoyable, such as. The whole spiral motif, from the village of Adai only being able to sustain 50 people to Kamina City being able to hold 1 million and finally the whole universe only being able to hold a certain amount (according to the anti-spiral). The same thing happens with Gurren Lagann, first being just Gurren Lagann and then becoming bigger and bigger, eventually turning into Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. There is also the main "bad guys" such as the chief of Adai Village (I know that he is not really a "bad" guy) then Lord Genome and then the Anti-Spiral, in the end, all of these characters were trying to perform the same thing (keeping the populace down). This links to the spiral because everything in the anime just keeps getting bigger and bigger yet the goal and the objective is mostly the same each time, that is what the spiral represents. The same pattern over and over again but each time it repeats it gets bigger.
Honestly, I could talk about the anime more and more but I would only be repeating myself over and over (almost like a spiral).

few animes is as thematically, emotionally, & structurally consistent as ttgl, which is itself mad ironic considering its insane, hyperkinetic aesthetic & numerous changes in superficial style (ie how it goes from mad max with mechas to futuristic utopian scifi political intrigue to niggas hurling galaxies at each other lolol)
i have tears streaming down my face. gurren lagann is the only anime to ever speak to me so hard i can say it has saved my life on various occasions bc of many of these exact themes you addressed so beautifully and thoroughly, and not be exaggerating. im late to this video but im so, so glad i found it, thank YOU for watching the series and seeing what i always hope ppl see when i recommend the show to them, and taking the time and effort to put what i felt into better words than i ever could. spin on!
