    I actually prefer Anime Wolfwood's death because he doesn't get a heroic sacrifice.

    Wouldn’t say Knives repressed the memory of what happened. Quite the opposite he sat with it all by himself and decided he couldn’t trust Rem or any human. He completely closed himself off. Which is then in stampede what his cloak represents. It’s completely made of his own knives and covers him completely. It’s a physical and metaphorical shield

    • @KBWanime
      @KBWanime  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      He did initially repress the memories because Rem had to tell him twice what happened. After the second time, he did just hold it in and decide to betray all the humans.

    • @twentytwoblue22
      @twentytwoblue22 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@KBWanimeguess I read it more as he was pretending so not to worry Vash and Rem at first. Since that whole bit is from Vash’s POV. Where he thinks it’d be better if Knives repressed the memory. It was kind of an unreliable narrator moment

    • @KBWanime
      @KBWanime  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That could be the case. It just seems that him pretending not to remember would be pointless to show because they immediately tell him again. With his expression and how he listened to the story again wide-eyed makes me think he did initially suppress the memories. It'd be kind of weird to me if he faked all that for no reason. After that, obviously, he pretended to be fine when he was planning to betray them.

    I love the original anime because rather than focus on lore or plot details such things it pretty much spent most of its time on building and selling character relationships and the thematic values it tries to portray in its narrative.
    Like knives doesn't turn evil just because he is evil but because of the wider idea of nature vs nurture and a being that does not fundamentally understand humanity and can be shaped by the experiences it gains from others which also fits into the moral quandary of humanity and the justification of its role in the universe.

    • @KBWanime
      @KBWanime  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's a good point. It is a very philosophical show. Wolfwood's death is also very thematic whereas the manga is more about the progression of plot and character arcs.

    • @MrInuhanyou123
      @MrInuhanyou123 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@KBWanime the 5 early episodes you mentioned were also remixed smartly in a way that slowly build up the thematic thrust of the show, vashs belief in morality and the humanity of various people he meets. the idea of the greater good while hinting at the darker direction the show would take. It's not just telling a story but unlayering an onion and the more you watch as pieces of vashs facade come undone to the characters around him and the viewer.
      Its probably a very silly idea but I generally take to character driven content..that's why unlike many I preferred things like Hellsing 2001(which primarily focused on seras and coming to grips with her in)humanity, or fma 03(the greater focus on ed trying to find his own ideals in a complex world) or trigun 98 as described. I feel like shows like that are not really all too common in modern anime and manga landscape.
      So while a direct anime adaption of the manga does sound nice, if it meant the original anime would simply be forgotten by newer generations as an unfaithful old adaption and not for what it brought to the world of trigun on its own, I'm more glad there are 3 totally different stories that can be a complement to one another rather than a total substitute.

    • @KBWanime
      @KBWanime  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That is a good point. The storytelling was focused more on the characters and themes and less on pacing or plot progression which I think can be said about a lot of older TV. Ideally all of these aspects are well done, but the thought process of what to focus on is really interesting.

      @@MrInuhanyou123 this (and the art sytle) is probably why I just can't get behind Tristamp. When definitely legally watching these shows online back in the day, I was exposed to and ended up enjoying this type of show.
      A personal favorite of mine is Zipang, a show that on its face sounds like an action series but is actually a drama about dedication to your homeland, dedication to your morals and how those two intersect when a modern day Japanese battle cruiser is sent back to just after the battle of Midway.
      It's something I've always appreciated and thought anime just does best and to not see that as much in new shows makes me kinda sad.

  • @elizabethh5022
    @elizabethh5022 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    I think the 1998 anime did well with what little source material it had to work with. I get the feeling that the writers were given a summary of where Nightow wanted the story to go, but considering it wasn't until nearly a decade later that the manga was finished, the exact details weren't ironed out. Also, the anime had a limited number of episodes to work with so it's why so much had to be condensed down. So I think it's very understandable that Trigun 98 only adapted the first two volumes of the manga and did a speed run through the rest, and you can't really criticise it for doing that, or for having a more light-hearted tone, considering the source material it was working from.
    I do agree though that the fight between him and Knives was very rushed at the end. Honestly it would have been better too if the number of gung ho guns was cut down (especially the non-humanoid ones) because they were taken down so quickly they hardly felt like much of a challenge. Focusing more on their fights or spending more time with Knives would have perhaps been a better use of time. I'm glad you mentioned Vash and Knives' reaction to Tessla because that was possibly my favourite moment in the manga. It explains so much of the differences between the twins and really helps you understand why Vash was able to make peace with humanity's evils and Knives wasn't.
    I know this has been said many times before, but I do wish the tristamp designs matched the gritter feel of the show. Even something as simple as Wolfwood's shirt being grey not white really bugs me because it was such an iconic part of trimax and made Wolfwood super distinctive even when only drawn in two colours and a blocky style. There's nothing inherently wrong with the tristamp designs, but they feel a bit too childish and cartoon-y for the harsh and violent story it wants to tell.
    Glad Milly will be making a return in tristamp. The relationships between Vash, Wolfwood, Meryl and Milly were definitely the best part of the 98 anime and I was very surprised to see how infrequently the girls appeared in the manga. They were telling very different stories, but I could have read entire volumes of those four mucking around and I'm sad the girls were relegated to the sidelines in the manga. Hopefully we see more of that dynamic in tristamp S2!

    I've been on a real Trigun kick lately, having watched Stampede, read the manga, and rewatched the '98 anime (I had already watched it nearly 5 years ago), so I've been dying to see a comparison like this. A lot of the thoughts in this video have also been ping-ponging around my own brain this past month. How everything compares, how it's different, what version does what aspect better, what in the fresh hell Stampede season 2 is going to do, etc.
    To answer your question at the end, I'd say the Trigun manga is my overall favourite. While I prefer a lot of the character set-up and comedy of '98, when it got down to the nitty-gritty of the plot, Trimax took the fucking cake. It was especially interesting to watch AFTER reading the manga, as this was my first time actually getting to watch a piece of media as an adaptation rather than on its own. Like, I could feel the difference between the two especially around the fifth moon incident, which was pretty cool in the anime, but made me positively FERAL in the manga. Oddly enough, '98 made me appreciate Trimax MORE.
    That's not to rag on '98, though. As I said, I really do appreciate what the anime did for the characters and the world over all, giving you a bit more time to bask in the general ~vibes~ of this world, and letting you get comfortable before beating your heart with a baseball bat. It also did a lot for Meryl and Milly which I quite liked, and even, to an extent, prefer over the manga. I feel like their characters are given a lot more time to shine, at least compared to the earlier parts of the story in the manga (I do agree they get kinda sidelined in the latter half of the anime, though, as much as I love episode 25). That being said, the manga just has so much MORE going on, and moments like Milly coming with Vash and Wolfwood to save Meryl, and the Vash and Meryl kiss-fist bump will live in my brain forever.
    I could go on about things I loved in the anime vs. things I loved in the manga. I honestly need to stop myself, otherwise I'll never finish writing this comment, haha!
    Also, with regards to Stampede, I'm reserving all overall thoughts on it until it's finished, as that seems only fair. That being said, it does have some of my favourite visuals, Knives' theme is GORGEOUS, and there is a certain satisfaction in seeing elements from the manga finally get animated that '98 never got to (e.g. Wolfwood's full backstory, Livio, Elendira, Tesla). I'm mainly just excited to see what it'll do in season 2. I desperatly want to see Milly finally appear, Stampede's take on the Eriks arc, and just... everything to do with the Earth fleet. If they adapt the end of the manga and the Ark, I will go apeshit.
    I will say, the only thing I disagree with in this video is Wolfwood's death in the anime being better than the manga. Granted, I think that may be up to personal taste on our parts. I prefer the manga because I felt it wrapped everything up about Wolfwood is a tragically bittersweet bow, while you mentioned that you prefered how unfairly tragic and regret-filled his death in the anime was. You also mentioned how his anime death covered the question of realism vs. idealism more prominantly, which, yeah, I kinda prefer too (Although, the manga does have that excellent scene after Rei-Dei's death, but that's not a conclusion to Wolfwood as a character, so I digress). While I prefer the manga version, I actually respect your opinion on that.
    That being said, his death in the manga made me WEEP and I will never be able to see two shot glasses or a white couch the same again. Thanks for the emotional damaged, Nightow!
    In conclusion, fantastic video. Trigun is such a wonderful series with so much going on, and if you have even more thoughts on it, I'd love to hear them!

    • @KBWanime
      @KBWanime  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm glad you enjoyed this video! I agree with everything you said. Even though I did like Wolfwood's death better in the anime, the manga just had so much more going on and it was still extremely well done with amazing visuals. That panel with the couch is burned into my mind.
      There's something really charming about the simplicity of the 90s anime that I really appreciate. It feels more grounded than the rest and that vibe is my favorite of the three, even if the storytelling is much much much better in the manga.
      Good thoughts. I am also curious about how Stampede will continue the story, even if it hasn't been my favorite so far.

    Nice video! I loved it ^^ Btw since you mentioned the whole “knives and vash get black hair when they use their power too much” -thing, I think they could be hinting at doing that in Stampede too? If you pay some attention to the small details you can notice that (yeah vashs hair is always a darker tone of blonde compared to Nai’s BUT) during his childhood after Luida and Brad took him under and he and Brad travel so Vash can fix up all the plants, while at the beginning of the sequence he still has completely blonde hair, at the end of it and during his reunion with knives he suddenly has dark brown eyebrows and a messy brown undercut. I actually saw some other people having the same theory, even though I don’t think anyone made a video about it yet. Still, I do hope they are planning to do this since I honestly think it could cause some kind of nice/cute group bonding moments if the others start to question why exactly that happens to him. But for me the manga was and is the best so far. it will probably always be. i love the new upswing the new series has caused. i love the fans. they are super sweet and joyful. i love the artworks of the artists who celebrate with me and was very happy to meet some of the producers of the new series at a con recently.
    I now call it my “unhealthy love” because no matter what, I will never be able to reach them.
    The manga with Vash was a big part of my youth and no series has captivated me so much and made me become a fangirl.

    I hope this does inspire more people to read the manga too
    I watched the first anime, but it just does not hold a candle to the manga.
    The gun ho guns are so dark and metal and brutal badasses.
    the conflicts are so much more personal.
    Vash verses legato
    Vash verses wolfwood
    Even Vash verses knives
    Humanities fear of vash and knives, even the gung ho guns who are monsters they deep down fear vash and knives.
    The manga wrote it all so well
    And finally the art, yasuhiro nightows ability as a manga artist were truly INSPIRING, he draws amazing expressions on peoples faces, he can draw goofy scenes and serious scenes SO WELL.
    I think originally Trigun manga directly competed against the Hellsing manga, as they were both ongoing and people seemed drawn to Hellsing, I personally felt like Trigun had more depth to it than Hellsing had. But this is why I think so few people would talk of Trigun yet so many more people talked about Hellsing, it just seems to give people more of the dark gritty violence they craved, but in its absence, people might eventually go back and give Trigun a chance. I hope so.

    Thanks a ton! It was just what I was looking for. I wanted to see differences from the differences between Stampede and the manga, but everywhere I looked it just compared the two anime versions without taking into account the actual source material. I love the original anime a lot, but since I read a great deal of the manga years ago I also knew how different it was and how much more story was left on the table since a lot of it came out after the original anime's run. While Stampede is clearly it's own thing and distinct from the manga, I'm happy it's pulling in more plot elements from the manga since the original anime always did feel a bit flat when it came to some characters and that overly convenient, quick ending never sat well with me. Also, I can't wait to have Milly back, and I will be very upset if they change her horribly like they did the new-damsel-in-distress Meryl... (hopefully she grows into someone more likeable in the next season)

It's very subtle which is odd cuz we're slapped in the face with exposition lol. The main story doesn't begin until Vash and Meryl meet, her eyes dilate when she looks at him, Meryl's reaction is what's focused on when its revealed he's a plant, she's the only one to believe in him in the end, he gets that determined look on his face when he hears her voice in void and my personal favorite is she lassos him in the first episode and he lassos her in the last! Thanks for this! I started watching the '98 anime around the time it came out and it alone had me loving Trigun up through this day, so I'm glad you point out how strong it was even given working with limited story details, etc.
    Speaking of the manga, while true that there are no overt romantic themes I'm noticing there are a lot of moments that infer a romantic bend to how some characters relate, especially Vash and Meryl. I was honestly (pleasantly) surprised! Easy to overlook if one likes, but also very THERE.
    As I take in all 3 versions I'm trying to enjoy each on their own merits and as just a different angle of the same story and characters I love - which is helping a lot - and videos like yours have been a fun way to indulge and gain some interesting perspectives I either hadn't considered or that I'm glad to have someone else point out. I was pretty surprised when I found out just how different it was from the manga. I immediately became interested in checking the manga out, but I didn’t for a while, but, a while back, they announced the new Deluxe Editions for the manga so I’m definitely gonna get them when they come out. I was also surprised to find that the 90’s anime was Johnny Yong Bosch’s first dubbing job for an anime and it was cool that he returned for Stampede. I haven’t seen that yet either, but I hope to really soon. I’m just really excited to get the Deluxe Editions and check out the original story, especially since Yasuhiro Nightow has a really interesting style and so it’ll be incredible to check out the original source material in Deluxe Edition form.

    I’ve been a huge Trigun fan since high school back in the early 2000s. The anime was my first introduction, and I absolutely loved it (the LatAm dub is amazing too). Later, in college, I read the manga and found myself loving it even more. Honestly, I wish I could combine elements from both versions to make the ultimate Trigun experience.
    Take Vash and Meryl’s relationship, for example. While the anime clearly hints at romance, the deeper emotional scenes between them in the manga just hit harder for me. In my opinion, they feel more meaningful there and even more romantic if that makes sense. The same goes for Wolfwood. I prefer his anime backstory, but the way he meets his end in the manga is unforgettable-especially with that iconic scene in the couch. It sticks with you.
    That’s probably why I’m not a fan of the Stampede anime. I was hoping it would finally blend the best aspects of both the anime and manga, but instead, we ended up with…something else.

    I really like Trigun.
    I first watched Stamped some weeks ago due to its cover, it called my atention. I really enojyed it and liked it so after hearing about the 98 Version I watched it. And after that I went to the Manga which I finished some days ago and it was so good!
    Personally I liked them in this order: Manga>>Stamped>>'98 Version.
    The only thing I genuinly disliked about Stamped was... Well... _Knives basically forcing Vash to get their "sisters" preganant??_ I know they are not Human... But They still Human Like 🫢
    Even before watching the other Version and Manga when I saw that I was like "Wah- 😵‍💫" and after everything, I find it even weirder... Idk what they are planing to do with that. Are we going to see Vash looking for His Kids in S2 or something? 😂
    Then, the only thing that still comfuses me from the Manga is Vash's hair. We are told their hair turn black after using all their energy ding afterwards... But Vash ended with his hair compleatly Black but didn't die... So what happened? His life span was only reduce to that of a normal human? Idk.

    great video!! very thorough and objective! and honestly, i'm probably biased, but i think a lot of the weaknesses in the '98 anime are exposed with how they handled wolfwood's character. they didn't really get into his backstory or what makes him so compelling at all, and they added a random romance plot that just wasn't there originally. and i get what you mean about how tragic and tender wolfwood's death in the '98 anime was, but the lead up and consequences for it in the manga were just. SO good. and they were barely present in '98. i could go on and on about it, wolfwood is just particularly meaningful to me lol. the fact that they've introduced livio at all in stampede has me VERY excited. i'd be looking forward to a comparison of the manga's ending to stampede's when it comes out if you decide to do that!!

    Something you haven't noticed or just haven't mentioned
    I want to add something about the ending.. in the 90s anime serie the ending was just like vash holding his brother and taking it alive to the city and I just couldn't swallow that
    ... Bring the monster to the city...the writer is making another problem and not fixing it makes a gap in the ending so you're just going to think how this solve the main problem of the story
    It's logically based on the character building will end up with knives killing all the people after he wakes up cuz he's still alive and haven't changed (correct me if I'm wrong)
    And the other problem that Vash can't let his brother die because he can't kill in the first place
    That's a sort of paradox
    But away from that I will give the manga a big clap for the way it ends the life of knives it just fixes everything and fits the character building and the story

    Ahh, you missed one aspect of comparison. I think the 90s anime wins this category - best opening music and sequence. I do like Trigun Stampede's opening music and it's style of an opening scene into title card into main story. But 90s anime Trigun has music that goes hard, is frenetic, and matches the style of that anime.

    Love the comparisons, probably one of the only few to actually compare the iterations, which most video talking about the Trigun iterations mostly speaks how they loke the OG, and just dismiss whatever stampede and even the manga did different.
    I get the Hoodie cloak thing, but even with the Manga and og anime I get the giddy first reaction with their Shoulder pads in the same way I do for the cloak thing.
    But I also just take it as Knives not going with how "humans normally dress". Which is why when he is without the cloak, Knives is completely naked. My rationalization to it is knives not comforming to himan dress etiquette

    I'm not sure if I missinterpreted it while I read the manga but I thought Knives passed out from seeing Tesla and never fully got to process the trauma in the way Vash did, leaving him with a whole wrong view on the whole situation and humans in general

    • @hyyacinthus
      @hyyacinthus ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Other things I'd like to point out:
      - Monev the Gale was mentioned with that name in Stampede too
      - as dumb as Knives' hoodie and his skintight suit may look, it has very distinct meaning and as strange the other characters were redesigned, Studio Orange has confirmed that there is a TON of symbolism going on with everyone. For example Legato's and Livio's designs were based on their very early appearances in the manga
      - I think it was fantastic that they gave Zazie way more spotlight in Stampede since they were a very important character in the manga and awfully got brushed off in the 98 anime
      - so far, I don't like what they did with Elendira in Stampede, her just being this bratty kid that's a clone of Knives for some reason as opposed to the manga where she was a badass trans woman who was basically ranked the 13th of the Gung Ho Guns but I'll just let Studio Orange cook for now and I'm excited to see what else they got in store for us
      - another interesting difference I find is the amount of religious symbolism/the plants being more like angels (especially Vash growing feathers or even turning into a feathery beast when experiencing extreme stress) and overall the amount of body horror in the manga that neither of the anime really did
      Overall though this video was very intriguing and well made and definitely explains the major differences and I too hope it inspired people to read the manga because omg its such a fantastic piece of media

    OG anime will always be the best for me, as the changes just make much more sense in my opinion. Wolfwood's death is genius, and the change on his backstory (meaning he isn't a teenager supersoldier) does a lot more service to his character.

      ngl I dropped it after episode 2. What really got me mad, outside a lot of changes, was the fact that the characters were saying how bad and rough the world is. I'm like STOP TELLING ME AND SHOW ME. Instead of slowing down and doing some proper world building, they relay info in a very unnatural way. Maybe it gets better later, but I'm pretty much done with it. Also Meryl is really annoying in Stampede.

    i became a trigun fan fairly recently and read the manga before watching stampede or the 90s anime, theres just something about trimax that really cannot be topped by the animated adaptions. Theres so much more depth to the characters, their relationships to each other and the world they are forced to navigate through. After being majorly disappointed by how the 90s anime characterizes vash i couldn't really get through it, it felt like a slog compared to the manga. tristamp was better and i enjoyed the almost reincarnation of the characters and their stories but it really just left me wanting for a full fledged accurate trimax adaption. The best thing Trigun Stampede has done is get more people to read Trigun Maximum !

    So after actually finishing the video, Maximum is one of my favorite manga of all time with the anime being my number 1, including both versions. I gotta say as a whole the manga is definitely superior but Stampede is my personal favorite way of consumption for the story as Orange did such a phenomenal job. • @TheBLACKSTARmovement
    @TheBLACKSTARmovement 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    First of all, I want to say thank you for making such an amazing comparison video, ive learned so much
    I have to say, as a HUUUUGE fan of the 90s anime, I was a bit offended when you said the fight with Knives in that show was rushed and half-baked, along with Knives himself. To me, its like you missed the point, which is understandable if watching purely from a comparative viewpoint.
    The biggest thing to me for the 90s show is that it was all about Vash himself and his point of view and his personal journey. Because of that, the show overall was very philosophical by nature and you didnt need to know super deeply about Knives as a person as honestly it wasnt that important, only his motivations.
    Establishing and building the philosophical conflict between the two through their shared past and the gung-ho guns battles is the basis of the show; each event was set up like a debate, where older brother Knives was trying to show Vash the truth and younger brother Vash spent most of the show running away from it. It was as if the two were having a heated argument for 15 episodes, even though they were never in the same room at all until ep 26.
    Because of that, the final battle never felt rushed and knives never felt flat; Knives' purpose was to be an ever looming specter that only actually became real when Vash finally decided to fight for his beliefs head on and the previous 25 episodes was Vash getting himself ready for that moment. And thats what makes the final battle being so short and sweet even more appropriate. Theres almost zero words spoken in the entire 20 min episode, which thus further brings more emphasis to their philosophical conflict.
    I also love how instead of taking the easy way out and having Knives die, it sets up another all-new season (that will never come), where Vash will take care of his brother and introduce Knives to Vash's philosophy through literally living Vash's life, which is a new way of fulfilling Vash's promise to Rem and allowing Vash to finally move forward with his life.
    Because of that, instead of feeling like i was watching a cool show, it felt extremely relatable to me as a person. I could apply Vash's struggles and mental battles in my own life, and I doubt that the manga and stampede could accomplish that as well as the 90s anime did, as the approaches are so different.

    • @TheBLACKSTARmovement
      @TheBLACKSTARmovement 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      TLDR Vash vs Knives in the 90s show was never about Vash vs Knives, but more simply about Vash finally conquering his greatest fear and biggest personal demon, which he spent 25 episodes gathering courage to do (more or less), so Knives being as fleshed out as possible and the battle being some big anime spectacle was not important.

    • @KBWanime
      @KBWanime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad you liked the video! I appreciate hearing that. As for Knives being a halfbaked villain and the final fight being rushed, I did mean specifically in comparison to the other. I do agree with you and there's a lot of depth to the story, however, I still think Knives isn't built up well and the final fight is kinda underwhelming. Thematically it might work but as a story it does fall somewhat flat. It's a pretty good fight with a lot going on, but overall it feels like it comes out of nowhere and ends abruptly.

    I did myself a favor, watching 98 before Stampede.
    Tristamp was sure as hell a piece of fine artwork, no complaints about that, but the story was sabotaged.
    Tristamp Vash was portrayed as the depressed wet cat who doesn't stand up for himself in a pacifism so intense it's almost idiotic.
    And don't get me started with how mad I got at weakly developed characters of Wolfwood, Legato and Livio. (they sabotaged the backstory of Vash and Knives...)
    All in all, manga wins it all for me. Knives was actually a very well developed villain and you could love him for that. Trimax Legato is my favorite, I like him despite the a-hole-ness. And the ending was magnificent.
