I need everyone to know, that I don't hate this game. I maybe should've made this a little more clear in the video. The point of this video was me trying to figure out why people don't like RE0, so I was replaying it from that mindset, and ultimatly found that these complaints make the game miss it's mark at being a legendary RE tittle.. It has issues that I address and I still stand by them. That being said I REALLY like this game. Ever since I published this video I actually beat the game two more times, and in each playthrough, I had better luck with dodging the eliminators, but they still feel broken to me and always get cheap shots in when I try running by them. Enemies like this can hamper the experience and make newcomers not want to finish the game. I hope you guys understand what I was trying to say in this video.
It's a decent games but has it's flaws. One thing that would've instantly made it better is to remove Billy (maybe even Rebecca too) and replace with other stars members. Adding Billy to this story made no sense. I would've preferred more scenes with stars members, that would've been interesting and getting to know them would've made losing them in re1 have more of an impact.
best review of the game. The game really does lack any character and atmosphere. There's nothing wrong with gameplay though. I really liked the difficulty, and how the game gave you just enough resources to get you by. unfortunately without said atmosphere, the game failed to be on par with the other RE games....at least for me.
By the time I finished Zero, Rebecca had the upgraded pistol, over 250 rounds for it, and the fully loaded magnum with several spare rounds in her inventory. Girl must've got stupidly careless on her way to the Spencer mansion! 😂
In my mind, I always justified Rebecca’s behavior in RE1 as trauma from RE0. She’s completely alone now that Billy is gone and she’s been awake and fighting for her life for 24 hours, presumably. Being a rookie, she has reached her limit at that point. That’s how I see it. But I will agree that it’s not good that I had to fill so many gaps myself.
I never saw anything wrong with her behavior, I mean she was even giving commands to chris and trying to help him and richard, even saving chris from a killer plant, the only weak point is when she was being attacked by the hunter, and that scene could fit even in 0. I dont know why ppl say she looks too innocent. I mean she always did all the way through both games imho.
Unfortunately, I can't suspense my disbelief as such. Rebecca went from being the ultimate baddie in Zero to Damsel in distress just doesn't sit well with me. But hey, all that matter was the story of Bravo team being sent first onto the mansion, Mission went bad, you know the rest. That's the only thing we need to know.
My main issue was that it was very uncool for Rebecca to not give alpha team a heads-up on what she got into the last night. Just a little "Hey guys, I was right around this area of the woods yesterday, and don't freak out, but I saw some crazy shit. Maybe we should re-think our mission preparedness before we hit up this mansion" would have been nice.
Or u know..mayb let alpha team know their esteemed captain wesker participated in ending one of umbrellas founders and tht he may as well b workin for said monster makin company..u know 😂
@@sherif956Ngl I chalk that up to capcom just kinda making shit up as they go then trying to do quick patch jobs after the fact. A lot of the early resident evil games gave me Star Wars vibes with how they just introduce random shit then go back late and complete make up some batshit explanation as to why it happened
I remember one time I got stun-locked by a Mimicry Marcus as Billy, all because he took too long to throw a single Molotov cocktail and getting hurt would cancel out his throw.
I feel like Resident Evil 0 would make more sense if you played as Enrico rather than Rebecca. Feels like he had quite an adventure before the first game. Show how he figured everything out, making his death in 1 more tragic.
Yeah, to be honest that would have made more sense. When I first heard that RE 0 existed, I thought it would focus on the whole Bravo team and the events leading up to their demise instead of just Rebecca and Billy
I agree. But being that Enrico was killed I'm not sure how they would make an ending for the game. So in that regard I guess you would have to play as Rebecca, who isn't that interesting of a character to me. The whole timing of RE0 is weird to me as well. I was always under the impression that the time between the two was only a few hours- not a whole day! So Bravo goes missing and Alpha doesn't respond for a whole day? And when they finally do its night time again? lol
enrico needs his own game. he survies the whole of re 0 and dies to wesker in re 1. it would be cool to see wat he found out as he was the first to know the truth
I couldn't come up with an original name D: That was what I was expecting back in the day when it came out. I was even hoping they'd play through into new undiscovered areas of the mansion. Overall I was disappointed with 0. Worst thing about it is the far-fetched story. You expect me to believe Rebecca went through this whole thing a day before and didn't bother to bring up any of it to Chris? Gtfo. Over the top retcon of ridiculousness
During RE3, Billy and Rebecca escaped together in a stolen car and then Billy went back to school and got a scholarship to Harvard in the same year he won the lottery and became the simultaneous world champion in boxing, croquet and interpretive dance. He's just bought a nice house where he lives with Rebecca and their three beautiful children. Or he woke up one morning, burnt the toast at breakfast, caught his fingers in a door hinge, and was accidentally crushed by Nemesis' drop pod while on his way to the shops. Who knows? Forget canon, believe whatever you want!
@@Robert399 I thought up a completely different story where Billy and Rebecca go their separate ways and a homosexual man starts to have a crush on billy and after many years they get married. (I want this relationship to be as healthy and not rushed as possible) One day bill somehow goes missing and both guys are trying to save each other while the other guys gets assistance from Rebecca. But yours works too, except for the Nemesis part.
Your last point always bugged me too. She never mentions anything to Chris, she literally finds out there is a traitor within S.T.A.R.S yet it's like she gets amnesia the second before she meets Chris. A better RE0 would still be playing as Rebecca, but staying with the rest of Bravo team and actually finding out what happens to them, what do they get up to before their demise. I want to know what happened for Enrico to figure out theres a traitor.
I certainly think they messed up by trying to cram in a whole new story into a game that should've only really been about Bravo team. No need for leeches, the train, Rebecca fighting Tyrants, Billy the convict, etc... just keep it simple.
I think this could be considered the weakest part of the original RE1’s story, the involvement of Bravo Team or lack thereof. Other than Richard (at least in the remake) and Rebecca, the whole Bravo Team was pretty much glorified inconsequential canon fodder. Extra thoughts below... Kenneth Sullivan and Forest Speyer die in the mansion before you even meet them onscreen. Edward (in the original) and Kevin (in the remake) are just there to provide corpses for our protagonists to find before getting attacked by Cerberus dogs. Enrico’s sole function is to provide an exposition dump that someone is a traitor, without his own character introduction and a few seconds before being killed by said person. Richard does not even get anything worthwhile to do until the RE1 Remake, where he at least saves Chris or Jill from Neptune or Yawn after receiving the serum. Finally, many of the things Rebecca does for Chris are stuff, which Jill Valentine could easily do herself like playing the piano or crafting the V-Jolt. *So I wonder if the RE1 story could have played out just as easily with these changes:* 1.) Kevin, Edward, etc. were just regular RPD cops, the disappearances of whom S.T.A.R.S. was sent in to investigate. 2.) Instead of Rebecca Chambers, Chris Redfield’s partner was just Jill Valentine herself, while Barry becomes the character whom Chris releases from the jail cell. 3.) Kenneth and Forest’s roles were taken up by residents of the Arklay Mansion, who happened to last the longest before dying (or maybe our protagonists could have carried Joseph Frost’s mauled body into the mansion and later see it reanimate). 4.) Richard and Enrico were part of the same team and entered the mansion along with Wesker, Chris, Jill, and/or Barry. 5.) The storyline of RE0 played out with a different set of characters, who do not end up meeting S.T.A.R.S. in the Arklay Mansion, so we can still see the train, leeches, lore of James Marcus and the T-Virus’ early development, plus the interaction between Wesker and Birkin.
@@Akd71008 Or could have just had the game about Billy and perhaps a Guard who was tasked to watch over him during transport, not Rebecca "I'm going to mace Chris in the face" Chambers.
God I adore how absolutely wacked out this games story is "oh you want a game where leaches turn an old man into a young opera singer that controls leeches with his amazing voice yep here you go" it's great
I don't know, it's this kind of over the top fantasy stuff that ruined RE series for me. Like Suzie said, Code veronica and RE0 were the start of the downfall of the franchise, and it just got worse from there. It went from a serious sci-fi survival horror that's grounded in reality, to some kind of wacky anime, or some sort of FF clone. I'm glad Capcom at least started remaking the original survival horror games, cause I haven't been excited for a new RE game for a long time until the remakes. I'm not even gonna talk about RE7 or 8, cause to me they're not RE games.
@@BL00DYME55 literally the only weird element of re zero is spencer being a slug thing, the story setting and characters are otherwise top notch, I consider zero to be up there with 4, but considering 4 is my favorite maybe you can see where I lie within the series..... still I believe even re4 is survival horror despite promarily being action oriented
@@BL00DYME55 stop the bullshit, the originals had cheesy shit too and you trying to cherry pick parts of re0 and the other games just weakens your argument. the cheese has been apart of resident evil since the very original with the abysmal dialogue and silly moments, it’s also clearly modeled after cheesy old zombie movies , pretty much every resident evil game is. you can’t expect a series to stay the exact same forever and ever, RE’s absurdity is part of what makes it unique and interesting to most audiences. take off your nostalgia goggles and realize that all series and franchises have to eventually evolve and find new directions or else they became stale and repetitive.
The main problem is a phenomenon which often shows up in games or films when the prehistory is brought out after the main story. Resident Evil Zero was published by Capcom in 2002. The remake of Resident Evil in 2002 as well. This is where the crucial point begins. The remake Rebecca isn't assimilated to the Zero Rebecca although they have same outfit and same style. The voice actors are different in both games. The Remake Rebecca is just like Rebecca from the original version. That was one of the big mistakes, Capcom done by producing the game. In parallel, RE Zero was developed and its Rebecca has a completely different attitude than the original/Remake Rebbeca. The another mistake is a logical one as well. The whole Umbrella research facility (mansion, secret lab below the church, water treatment plant) was destroyed by detonation (caused by Birkin). The Birkin Lab appears in the game as well. It is located a hundred of meters below the mansion. Why does it show up in RE2 (I know it was published in 1998) when it was connected to the mansion and the treatment plant and it shouldn't have existed anymore in September 1998. That's the point. The fact that they showed part or the entrance of the Birkin Lab at Resident Evil Zero resulted in a logic error to the Birkin Lab from Resident Evil 2. Accordingly, there should no longer be a Birkin laboratory in Resident Evil 2 and I doubt there was anything like explosion protection for the laboratory at Resident Evil Zero.
I have two main issues with James Marcus as a villain in particular (besides his appearance, dialogue, and singing-opera-to-leeches gimmick, which could at least be retooled better in a later remake/adaptation): 1.) In the RE Lore prior to RE0, the only B.O.W. that Umbrella possessed, which was capable of preserving and replacing a host’s consciousness, was the Nemesis parasites. This ability was treated as something unique only to those monsters, which was why Umbrella Europe found it invaluable to research the parasites and their applications. But apparently with Resident Evil Zero, James Marcus already crafted the Queen Leech monster, which could do exactly that to a perfect degree... as just one of its many other random abilities (like commanding other leeches akin to a queen ant, fusing together into bigger conglomerate monsters, changing the leeches’ appearance to mimic James Marcus himself, and even sprouting tentacles like the Nemesis Tyrant at one point to attack Rebecca/Billy). If Capcom wanted to go that route with James Marcus, where a parasitic creature allows him to retain his mind even after the T-Virus mutates his body, then it would probably complement the lore of RE3 better to just have Marcus rely on a Nemesis parasite and be the scientist behind its engineering. Not to mention, if Umbrella learned that this parasite enabled him to come back and pursue his vendetta, then they would have a reason to look further into those parasitic B.O.W.s leading up to the Raccoon City Incident and name them after Nemesis, the goddess of vengeance. Maybe the “Mimicry Marcus” leech monsters could still be in the game, as another of Marcus’ favorite “pets” that he unleashes upon Umbrella... then again it would be hard to make the final boss’s appearance unique, without the leeches crawling all over him. 2.) James Marcus’ entire story becomes a little too much like a rehash of William Birkin (or vice versa if one is going by chronological order), only with Marcus being not as interesting and more awkward, in my opinion. I do not mind the idea of Birkin witnessing the assassination of Marcus, since it makes his fate later on seem more karmic. But then it goes further by having James Marcus be brought back to life by one of his creations at the last moment, when Umbrella thought he was dead, then wreck havoc by initiating an outbreak of the T-Virus. The only significant difference I can see is that Marcus was at least obviously aware of his actions, making them have a more clear vengeful vibe, while Birkin was descending into an animalistic beast. Yet with Birkin, there was a more defined catalyst for Umbrella to turn on him, with him and Annette planning on giving Umbrella’s research to the U.S. government. Meanwhile, RE0 seems to just have a vague reason for Marcus’ death, where Spencer simply becomes more paranoid and decides to replace him with Wesker and Birkin. Finally, the G-Virus was the life’s work of Birkin, which was specialized for biological immortality and adaptive regeneration. So I thought it made sense for Birkin to bring himself back to life at the last minute, using his G-Virus. But with Marcus, he is shot to death and the Queen Leech he was examining just happens to slither down his throat, which then conveniently brings him back to life just fine.
I just beat this game in its remastered version and for me it was great, I bought it for the gamecube in 2004 but never went through beyond the train until now, and I loved it, I don't know if its nostalgia for the old games that I played in my teenage years but I enjoyed a lot
I just finished this game the first time and it's definitely an amazing RE game. I don't understand the hate. I rank it better than RE2 and RE3 remakes. It stands neck and neck with RE1 remake.
Does Ai door trick works on Gamecube? I tried it and the Ai doesn't teleport to the door I'm located. It surely works on remaster version tho, but I haven't played that version yet. Just watched some YT gameplay.
I'm not sure that this actually makes the plot any better, but a minor correction; The leeches don't bring Marcus back to life and de-age him and he's not controlling them by singing. The queen leech he'd been experimenting on consumes him and, in so doing, absorbs his memories, after which it creates a body for itself which resembles him when he was younger. It controls the other leeches by virtue of being the queen leech... Deciding to sing opera is just a thing it does while it's doing so. You never meet Marcus in the game, he's been dead for a long time. You just meet an infected leech which thinks it is Marcus. That's why the "leech men" are called Mimicry Marcuses... They're attempting to form similar bodies. It's not actually as silly as it sounds... There have been experiments done where planaria (which are leech-type things) have been taught to navigate basic mazes, then been ground up and fed to other planaria which have then been able to navigate the maze first time. So there does seem to be some factual basis for the possibility of a leech absorbing memory.
I checked around and it seems like there was only one such leech maze experiment in the 60s, which could not be duplicated. Some believe the leeches simply followed the slime trail left by the earlier ones.
I was under the impression that the Queen Leech absorbed Marcus's hippocampus and revitalized his brain activity, ultimately merging with his dead body and becoming one with its creator. Through the Queen Leech's body, it seemed that Marcus himself was essentially reborn. Those leech men are called Mimicry Marcuses because they are in fact amalgamations of several T-virus leeches attempting to impersonate the human form of their creator. Marcus himself in the present day (i.e. 1998) lives on through one leech - the Queen Leech. This is never made clear in the game. Whether the Queen Leech actually revives Marcus or just _thinks_ it's him is almost left up to fan interpretation. Personally, I find the thought of Marcus reborn to be cooler, so that's how I usually interpret it. ;)
I'll just say: before the penultimate boss fight (the Dr. Marcus's) I had to backtrack from the lab to the front of the church to pick up the grenade launcher. It took almost 15 minutes 😅
Visually resident evil zero is one of the most remarkable entries in the series. I liked everything about the game beside the story. The zapping mechanic was cool the setting was cool the old school survival horror feeling was cool. The story was what held it back.
yeah not one of my favorite stories in re but still one of my 2 favorite re games, code veronica being the other. the story in 0 is way better than re6, which just went so overboard with silliness i can't stand it. i actually find the gameplay in 6 really fun but the grasshopper zombies, butterfly zombies, silly looking spider zombies, and simmons, who is basically a t-1000 zombie that turns into a centaur with a machine gun, a huge fly, and a t-rex. it's just so blatantly silly it ruined it for me.
When you think about it, it's not TOO much of a stretch that Rebecca is significantly weaker in RE1 then RE0. Think about it, she's been through absolute hell in 0. Then she has to go to another mansion and another horde of zombies. She's probably exhausted from what she went through in 0, probably hasn't slept in the 24 hours between her game and RE1. Not to mention, malnutrition as she probably hasn't eaten or had water in that time. She's also probably completely Traumatized.
@@strahinjagov Who's to say she isn't afriad? in RE0 Well, maybe it's because she's unarmed. She's only got a beretta in RE1, whereas she is armed with a various assortment of weapons. Maybe it's because Billy's there to back her up most of hte time. Whereas in RE1, she's pretty much on her own a lot. Yeah, Chris is there, but they aren't together a ton. Or it could be adrenaline. People have gone through amazing feats on pure adrenaline. Able to ignore injury, fear, everything. But, now that she's relatively safe in that save room (where Chris meets her) and her heart has probably calmed down and her natural fears have come back.
@@TheBlockerNator why does she only have a handgun in 1? Shouldn't she she armed to the teeth? Why would she just ditch her weapons? Why does she never mention Billy or anything that happened?
I’ve read that the two production teams behind REmake and Zero couldn’t get along in regards to Rebecca and ended up having two different likenesses and voice actresses, not to mention writing, resulting in completely different portrayals of the same character. No idea on the truthfulness, but I can’t see any other reason why she’d be so different. Exhaustion/PSD is pretty much just a fan theory or an excuse.
I always imagined Rebecca in Chris's story is an alternate scenario where the events of re0 didn't happen and she just ended up at the Spencer mansion and hid until Chris showed up, explaining why she is still more of a shaken rookie with little experience in dealing with the bioweapons, meanwhile with Re 0 belonging to Jill's scenario. After it's events, Rebecca found her own way back to the city and didnt stay at the Spencer mansion which would explain her absence in her story, and she just didn't get back before Wesker and the rest of the team left to investigate the forest.
This game is so infuriating. It’s fun when it’s fun and the puzzles are mostly great and the atmosphere is good. But man, the way the enemies just spawn out of nowhere in hallways and areas you’ve cleared and sometimes right next to the door is absolutely insane. I’ve had to not only restart the game but I’ve had to load save datas over and over because it’s really all about trial and error. I want to be immersed in the game but it forces me to calculate my progression based on my mistakes and it’s a frustrating experience. And don’t even get me started on the bullshit boss battles. Wow
Tell me if this sounds familiar. You make it to the Factory and you left MOST of your healing items, weapons and key items (the Hookshot) back at the Umbrella Training Center. So you and Rebecca have to run ALL THE WAY BACK to get those items. And the developers KNEW you would do this, because there are new enemies there, like Hunters! So, because you have Rebecca the pack mule there with you, you wound up having to get into a fight with her at your side. And because she's so damn weak, you likely DIED trying to back track. I'm so glad the other Resident Evils never brought back the concept of no inventory storage. That sucked ass in Zero.
An interesting thing about the eliminators is that they have a huge chance to cause a knock back state, which leads to a shit load of hit stun. On top of that, their wind and active frames for attacks, are insanely fast. Not worth the headache at all. As for the partner mechanic. I wouldn't say there's no reason to explore alone. Thanks the the small amount of healing items, having your partner get hit by a monster you were able to dodge, is a real problem. I actually made my partner wait in a room, if I knew a leech zombie was near, and I would run each of them past it, individually. This is a good way to conserve healing items.
i remember your retrospective video when you mentioned this. something i disagree with is that fire weapons are difficult to come by. i absolutely think this is false. they practically throw gas and bottles at you before every leech fight. and if you think that billy is the best to go at a leech man because of his extra stamina.. nah. rebecca throws molotovs almost twice as fast. she's a much better candidate for leech fights, ESPECIALLY if you split your party up first. you can mitigate a lot of bs that way. once i found this out i had a much easier time conserving ammo on these douchers.
One thing you can't argue with, the music is awesome. The theme that plays in the main hall is one of the creepiest tracks I've ever heard in a horror game.
fwwaller~ Agreed, although I can't decide whether the Main Hall theme was creepier, or the Basement Corridor theme. That one also sent chills down my spine. There were other great ones too, but they were the most noteworthy.
I would say 0 has the best atmosphere in the series along with 7 and the music is excellent the characters are decent-ish, unfortunately they are the only good things i like about the game, not having item boxes really was a game killer for me especially when a lot of the more important weapons and items take up 2 slots each, it was annoying too that Rebecca couldn't even push a box and Billy couldn't combine a herb...little things like that were very unnecessary and a pain.
@@nezkeys79 I don't think remaking RE1 is necessary, the remake we have is already near perfection, improving on every aspect of the original while still being truthfull to it, an over the shoulder camera remake would rub people the wrong way, not to mention it would be the second remake, which would be kinda silly. At least with RE4remake they have the chance to remedy the lack of survival horror the series suffered during RE4, 5, and 6, and while I like code Veronica, some parts of it are kinda wack, while REmake1 aged much better, since it already fixed the wack of the original RE1.
@@nezkeys79 A Code Veronica remake would be a dream come true for me. That is actually my favorite original style RE game (until REmake on GC.) I never owned Dino Crisis but I'm sure it would be great remade from what little I played of it.
"It gets very silly in an almost magical way". This is exactly my problem with the RE universe. The first 3 games are grounded and more believable with normal people trying to survive a virus outbreak and prototype biological weapons. As the series progresses you start getting people with super powers and monsters that can talk and it just moves completely away from horror
Am I the only one who thinks that it could have been better, if James Marcus came back from death and mutation, by implanting himself with a Nemesis Alpha Parasite beforehand, rather than having a Queen Leech crawl down his throat? These are my reasons below, if anyone wants... At least then, the plot of RE0 would be incorporating a B.O.W. set up in the original three PS1 games and expanding the backstory of its use, rather than contriving “magic” leeches that just happen to resurrect him as one of their many random abilities. Then, these events could tie into Umbrella realizing the potential these NE-Alpha parasites have, for preserving the consciousness of a T-Virus B.O.W. like the Tyrants, thus leading to RE3’s Nemesis T-Type. Plus, Nemesis is named after the Greek goddess of divine vengeance, which coincidentally is similar to James Marcus’ own speech and rhetoric, when declaring that he will make Umbrella burn in Hell. As for the Mimicry Marcus leech monsters, they could still be in the game, albeit as something Marcus would unleash and control more indirectly, making him a Queen Leech in a more figurative sense. When you fight James Marcus as the final boss, he could look like these hybrid of a Crimson Head zombie, the Nemesis T-Type, and the mutated Alex Wesker. His first form in the actual game even has tentacle attacks like Nemesis. For the second form, his human body could transform to become more Licker-like, and some of those leeches could simply start to crawl over his body, more subtly giving him that “Queen Leech” vibe, rather than having the monster literally be a Queen Leech impersonating Marcus. Does anyone agree or disagree, whether this would be a better idea?
@el capitano Yeah I am recently replaying all the main RE games, some of them for the first time and RE:7 is by far the best when it comes to atmosphere! There were some situations where I was legitimately scared!
I don't mind the superpowers as that was literally the point the virus but the story somehow takes it way over the top sometimes....still love the franchise tho.
@@SolidSnake240 Yeah, people seem to forget that. I feel like RE6 was where it really stopped being RE. While RE6 had a few very good redeeming qualities, overall it couldn't come close to the older games. RE5 obviously had the boulder punch and all, but I feel like that can be justified in a million different headcanons; experimented on in some kind of duplicate of the Wesker program; or just... very strong, most people we've seen in the franchise are strong, so the in-universe capacity for how strong one can be doesn't have to line up with ours to make sense. People also just disregard how ungrounded the original games could be too. I don't care if it's a BIOweapon -- they have fucking super powers. Even in the very opening of RE2 original, the characters are performing unrealistic feats. Claire literally throws a zombie over her shoulder, and then within the same 2 seconds throws a knife that just barely misses Leon and hits the zombie. Also, ALL of the original games had constant action -- you literally got a grenade launcher. Resident Evil 0 to Resident Evil 3 ALL ended with a timer counting down until something explodes, you're telling me that wasn't an action game?
RE4 doesn't have humans with super powers, Leon has 6 entire years of secret service training, of course he can neutralize civilians with a gun, a big ass knife or in close combat, besides the Ganados/Zealots/Soldiers are just people with Las Plagas, more strength, more durability but still can die with a single shot from your Rifle. The Boss Fights? Leon uses a lot of the enviroment, take advantage of weak points and use upgraded weapons and his beautiful dodge abilities to win. If you wanna complain about "Super humans" go and puke on Chris punching a damn boulder like nothing
My major issue with RE0 is that the Bravo Team's roles should've been bigger. It should have focused more on them and their struggles. Edward has one scene in the intro, then again after the Cerberus have severely wounded him and that's it....Kevin salutes, that's it! Enrico appears a handful of times and always briefly. Richard, Forest and Kenneth say not a word between them. There are quite a few amazing aspects of this game but the Bravo Team's lack of representation kills it for me. Saying that, you make ALOT of good points here. They tried too many new ideas all at once and a cluster fuck ensued. Excellent video :)
I read an interview years ago where Shinji Mikami said he would of made the game from the perspectives of Bravo team, who they were, how they got there and how they died. I expected this when I first played RE: Zero but was disappointed this wasn't the case a missed opportunity I think. I like RE: Zero but i would of preferred it the other way. It's not too late tough they could make an RE like it in the future.
it still looks amazing today. i'd love to see a modern re game with prerendered backgrounds and tank controls, but unfortunately that'll never happen. just look at 0 compared to the ps1 trilogy and imagine what they could do on the ps4. everyone but me loves the style of these recent remakes though.
@@Jack_80 well the pre-rendered backgrounds still look gorgeous to this day, but they had to use that direction because of hardware limitations. We have gotten one amazing remake and one pretty good remake in the past year-and-a-half and I think that's something worth celebrating. The fact that Capcom has appreciated their roots and has also brought them into the modern era it's a good thing. We still have these games with the pre-rendered backgrounds that we can go back and play whenever we need to scratch that itch. I think they need to stick with the new remake visual direction whatever they make future RE games.
Probably because the other Resident Evil games made them visually appealing and they were also earlier in the franchise. Repeating that, yet again, while making them look as generic as possible, didn't do it any favors. On top of that, the enemies in 0 are flat out irritating at times thus pushing people to dislike them more.
In Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, there's a scenario called "Nightmare" where it tells you what happened right after Resident Evil Zero. Rebecca says that after splitting up from Billy she was exhausted by the events that happen the other night. Maybe this explains why she is helpless in Resident Evil 1. But another inconsistency is that Rebecca in Resident Evil 1 doesn't have Billy's dog tag.
Resident Evil Zero is fascinating to me because you can tell by reading the language of the game design that this is a game made by people who have completely run out of ideas. This was still before the massive game changer that was 4 so at this point they and the fan base still thought all Resident Evil could be was spooky mansions and you can tell they were running out of things to do with them considering entire rooms serve the purpose of only holding items and not a damn thing else. Also the monsters are extremely uninspired, most of them being nothing more than "animal or bug that is now really big." Some people think RE4 is a betrayal to the series and took it in an unnecessary direction. After playing Zero I'm convinced we absolutely needed 4 otherwise the series could have died a pretty pathetic demise.
@@forastero54321 i thought the background story was great. parasitic bugs that latch onto your nervous system are very real, and a really cool twist on the typical resident evil virus bullshit.
@@ketongu I'm not saying that the las plagas idea was bad, but for an re game it was unnecessary. @@nicholasdiaz3733 let´s be honest here, re4 never killed the series, just removed the horror aspect because re5 and even re6 can be so much fun to play, but they´re not horror games at all, maybe we needed those games in the series till the devs could go back to the classic route of horror and give us re7 and now REmake 2
I don't know if "useless" is helping your partner giving the serum from a giant snake, saving him from a giant plant attack and helping him fight with fcking monster more taller than her. And if we think about it, maybe was the ptsd kicking or she was low on ammo.
@Blood & Soil oh f*cking jesus christ in a pogo stick, i'm not a supporter of that witch who ruined tlou2 and almost ruined cyberpunk 2077 and i hate the sjw as much as many people do, i just try to give any reasons why rebecca was defenseless against the hunter. Or my last reason is that it's because resident evil have many chronological problems in every game (i'm looking to you re3 and re3make)
Rebecca being helpless and weak in RE1 makes sense too me because I was in military and understand effects of shell shock and PTSD and there are many historic examples of people even experienced people all of sudden getting weak and helpless over time If you want a good historic example is when general Patton in 3nd world war slapped around a shell shocked troop but ofcourse those effects were not as understood back then like today
The best part of Zero was the train section, after that the game goes downhill in my opinion. But I still enjoyed it even with its flaws. RE0's save room theme is one of my favorites in the series.
When you were younger in 90/00's you also had less games and you were thankful and replayed all the games you had to death, no matter the quality. It was harder to judge quality as internet access was limited. Now I'm 30 I have access to SO many games. I have over 700 games on just Steam, but I also have other PC clients, a PS3/PS4 and Switch too. The same issues happen with TV. I loved watching the same movies on TV when I was younger, over and over. Now I have access to so many good shows, sometimes I just can't be bothered!
When you're young, you have a lot of time, but not a lot of money, so you have to take what you can get. When we're old, we have the money, but not a lot of free time, so we are more picky.
She probably just ran out of ammo on her way to the mansion. I definitely remember the feeling of powerlessness you get from having no ammo to defend yourself with.
the game never really bridged the connection to 1. Rebecca just splits up from bravo and meets up with them 2 times, and how do expect anyone to believe that they're 2 gigantic facility (3ish if you count re2-3) and that no one finds out about them until its too late. If you ask me the game should've been split off into two parts, the train and woods of the arklay mountains where Rebecca and bravo team trek up to mansion from re1 in sort of blair witch way, maybe have it so that enter manison and explore it for a bit.
I would get rig of it all and just keep the woods and mansion. Make the first bit about surviving the woods (no Billy, no train, no other facilities other than what was in RE1) and then have it follow the events of RE1 with the mansion, guardhouse, tunnels, labs etc... Wouldn't mind seeing more areas to explore as well but keep it simple. Would be better if Rebecca wasn't the main character but not sure how the player is suppose to beat the game with a character that eventually dies in the story lol Having said all that, not sure RE0 even needed to happen to begin with. The lead up to RE1 was pretty straight forward so not sure why they felt like it needed some large expanded story that just made things more complicated.
Despite its flaws, I loved this game. It has my favorite character and interesting boss fights too. Instead of the port, I would love a remake of 0 and another for 1. But after 3 being remade and awful, I'm thankful for what we have now.
yeah after 3Make I feel trepidation about any subsequent ones, even if the only one is allegedly RE4 (meh). I'm relieved the next project coming is new and a sequel to a game that hopefully establishes itself more. I say that too as someone who considers RE2 REmake among some of the best the series has ever had.
IIRC, the canonical reason for Rebecca being so weak and helpless come RE1, is that she hasn't had *any* chance to rest during the events of RE0 to RE1... Which is to say after the events she's been through, during RE1 she is *incredible* for being able to keep it together as much as she is and help Chris, as she is entirely running on fumes and adrenaline.
I always liked this explanation. Sleep deprivation is a real thing, and it actually makes Rebecca's trial by fire all the more badass. She WAS completely out of her depth at first, but she grows throughout 0 into a proper, amazing survivor. Then REmake happens and she's still hanging in there despite everything. That's extremely impressive. ...of course, RE Vendetta just had to happen and ruin Rebecca's character. Yay.
I think this is where Capcom's need to give players something new every game started to wear on the formula. I remember cringing hard at the main villain, who just seemed like they were stretching the lore to make things a bit more magical
Here's also a weird retcon about RE0. Rebecca knows that Wesker works for Umbrella, because it's in the documents you find in the game, yet she doesn't tell Chris anything of it
I will always love RE0. It has its flaws but it still captures the spirit of what classic RE was all about. For any of you who completed the hard mode run of RE0 then you'll know just how challenging and exciting this game can be :)
mixnflix101 Exciting as in heart attack inducing? Definitely. When I played it on Hard I was pretty conservative with items, but I still ended up using literally everything I had on the Queen. By the time I beat the game only my Handgun had spare ammo.
The game should have been focused on the Bravo team, but instead we got Rebecca and some guy (first introduced and never seen again) thrown in and Enrico seen for maybe a total of 30 secs.
A huge problem not mentioned here is that when the game takes away one of your two characters without warning, their inventory disappears with them (strangely, this also applies to Code Veronica's forced character switches), so it's extremely easy to get de facto softlocked and end up forced to reload just to clear out their inventory before that point. Like most of this game's biggest problems, it's fairly easy to deal with and keep the game reasonably fun if you know about it in advance. I was able to finish RE0 myself and had a decent time, but only because another veteran was around to warn me about these gotchas. For a casual, blind first playthrough, which we expect most games to be designed around, it's more than enough to justify dropping the game and replaying one of the other REs instead.
As for Rebecca being weak and helpless in Resident Evil 1, I would say that physical and mental fatigue took over to pretty much humanize her character and make her seem like her nightmare which is taking place in a span of 2 days is endless. You see her breakdown and cry in front of Chris in the Guardhouse V-Jolt Chemical Room, she isn’t with Billy anymore and all of her friends/comrades are dying around her, Rebecca is only human. As for the Hunter in the room, if you think about it, she only had a handgun at that point with probably 15 rounds left in the chamber, and one Hunter got the jump on her and followed her into a supposed safe room, which shows how relentless the Spencer Mansion Hunters were, and if Chris hadn’t been around that floor of the Mansion yet, there were 3 hunters waiting for her in the next room behind the door she was backed up at, and the other door on the opposite side of that room had two hunters behind it in that hall. Not to mention, Rebecca didn’t know if Chris was still alive at that point or if he was anywhere around the Mansion yet, to her, Chris could have been in the Guardhouse again or in the caves already, and she was so tired and beaten down physically and mentally at that point, she really probably thought that she was the only one left alive.
That’s the unfortunate circumstance that most RE fans like myself have to deal with, the original RE came out in 1996 and Shinji Makami (not sure I spelled his last name right.) said that he only wanted to make a stand alone horror game with no sequels and no prequels, just Resident Evil, a little horror game where a rescue team encounters Zombies in a deserted mansion, it’s sorta a spiritual successor to Sweet Home. After Resident Evil 1 got so popular and so huge in the mainstream, Capcom definitely wanted to capitalize and make a sequel which ended up being everyone else’s favorite Resident Evil except mine LoL. Shinji made Resident Evil without any plans of a cliffhanger ending into a sequel it was supposed to be stand alone, Capcom wanted more and more sequels until they really killed out the franchise and stopped making money with it. I think that’s why Resident Evil 1 was remade, so they could make their prequel which is Zero and try to make everything tie in together nicely. I just love Resident Evil Zero so much, I don’t understand why so many of the fans don’t like it and other horror fans too, it has it’s fixed camera angles that most of the die hard fans cry for a return to the series every day. Only a few people love this game, as well as me, I have so many memorable moments with it and I just find myself trying to defend it every time. 😢
zero is beautiful and timeless and it's silly that people think Rebecca should have been a hollywood action movie star by the events of the spencer mansion incident after several days of PTSD and sleep deprivation in the training facility areas.
You said pretty much what I thought, Jerry. If looking at this from a realistic stand point, Rebecca had been through so much shit in RE 0, that her virtual helplessness in RE 1 is not so hard to fathom. Between the loss of most of her team on Bravo, depleted ammo from all the combat she previously faced, and her physical and mental exhaustion, it's no wonder she was in no condition to face a fearsome foe such as the Hunters (again). Hell, I can't even imagine how I would fair, if I had been in her situation. Just saying.
@naitoflik92 I think the main issue for many people is that many of the bosses in RE0 are not just giant mutated animals, but more specifically giant versions of common backyard pests, which makes the variety feel even narrower. Extra thoughts below to explain... If I recall correctly, all of RE0’s bosses are the Stinger, Centurion, Giant Infected Bat, Proto-Tyrant, and the Leech Queen. Meanwhile, the RE1 Remake had the Elder Crimson Head, the gigantic Mother Neptune, Plant 42, Yawn, Black Tiger, Lisa Trevor, and T-002 Tyrant. The Proto-Tyrant was basically a weaker failed version of the T-002 Tyrant. If the Proto-Tyrant acted as an elite heavyweight enemy like the G-Spawn in RE2 Remake or scrapped Tyrant Inferior, rather than a one-of-a-kind boss, at least then it would have its own distinct niche from the T-002 Tyrant. As far as other unique non-giant-animal bosses go, RE0 only had the Leech Queen, while the RE1 Remake had Plant 42 and Lisa Trevor. Finally, the Mother Neptune was at least unique in providing an oceanic vibe and being a well-presented puzzle boss, in my opinion. Unlike RE1 just giving us Black Tiger, RE0 gives us two giant bug bosses in the form of the scorpion and centipede, making it feel more repetitive. Plus, the Centurion does not even actively attack you, and at least something like the Gravedigger in RE3 had some unnatural blending of worm traits, millipede traits, and hellish toothed maws. Although Yawn could also be considered a large mutated backyard pest, it does at least convey its own apex predator vibe, like those stories of massive Anacondas suffocating people and trying to swallow them whole, plus it is better presented in the mansion setting than the giant bat for me.
Only problems I have with RE 0 is the Rebecca contradictions and Story contradictions and those god forsaken monkeys . I don't really have a problem with the leech men and item management I just bring what I absolutely need but other than that I beat this game over 5 times , I really like this game p.s. another reason why I really like this game is because I can play as my favorite character Rebecca the whole time rather than playing a 5 minute optional segment in RE 1 but I like that 5 minute segment too I have a save file just for playing that segment .
Wow. The tone of your voice is perfect. It’s almost ASMR levels of relaxing. Your content is great as well - nicely researched, scripted and edited. Keep it up. You deserve all the views.
I’ll keep saying this... i love your voice... it’s like I’m listening to a smooth quiet storm radio show... about games a nice drink in my hand and just relax...
Still think its quite good. It was from that golden era of the franchise and is the last of its kind. Even when RE trips up its still a great experience.
Besides, if the Resident Evil franchise did nothing but carry on sticking to the old Alone in the Dark-esque gameplay engine with no improvements instead of switching over to the over-the-shoulder third-person shooter formula, Capcom would've been slagged off for not moving on anyway.
Deep Ghoul That’s why this series is so strong in retrospect. It switches things up with each installment; even when they repeat the same plot like RE0 or RE5 they add partner mechanics and nonsensical storylines. It’s great!
The item retrieval quest that pissed me off was the hookshot you need after defeating the bat at the church; I don’t know about you guys but I left the hookshot back at the crash site of the train before the training facility, so I had to go all the way back there and had to fight/avoid eliminators...
2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
This piss me off as well, how could u hold on to something this long in the game, plus it was the crash site. I never thought you were gonna need it again, I wish the game told us more
I had nearly zero health and no healing items after the bat and had to go back for the hookshot. The three eliminators on the way meant that I was practically softlocked and my last save was a long time away. Never finished the game.
I love that you made this video, Every time I wanted to play RE0 I think wow the train sequence is so cool the leech zombie is so scary, then I don't finish it when the mansion part comes up. about 6 months later... "Oh yeah the train part is so cool and I remember being so afraid of the Leech men."
LIONREV7 I can’t say I blame him, haha. Her voice acting was pretty awful, even by RE1 standards, and she was far too much of a “damsel in distress” imo.
What helps me understand and link the portrayal of Rebecca Chambers in RE 0 and than later RE 1 is simple: exhausted from being up 48 hours straight since RE1 takes place the next day. Don't forget that all this macabre stuff has probably been somewhat traumatic for an 18 year old rookie which by the way all that trauma is returning in the form of PTSD for Rebecca now that Billy is gone and she is alone until we meet her in RE1.
Its really funny. I never really cared about any of these points, but just love the game for what it is. I acknowledge that the flaws exist, but I overlook them and even absorb them into the gameplay experience. I also get to play as Rebecca, which I would like to do in every game if possible (or moddable). I appreciate the design of parts like the items and the strategy involved.
I haven't played RE0 in at least 10 years. I remember loving the new system of item dropping. I would sacrifice some items when moving to a new area instead of schlepping everything...maybe that's what they thought people would do.
@@unshackledmind7863 IMO, having played RE2 Remake before Zero, if the devs were dead set on cutting item boxes, why not scatter inventory upgrades, like hip pouches, throughout each area? At least, then, I could manage my inventory easier while also receiving an extra reward for exploration.
I mean if you have to criticise the bosses from 0 you have to do the same with 1. I mean giant snake, giant shark, giant plant, giant spider..... wouldn't say that's any more creative. I think the drop system is great, you can place any key items that require more than one unlock next to each other next to the area you have to unlock. As for the rest of the items, group them all into one area. I find it convenient because when you have a full inventory, going back and too to the item box was kind of annoying compared to dropping a less important item and continuing on. Either system has backtracking though having both a box as well as the drop system would have been a better idea. I personally thought the Monkeys were one of the highlights of the game. I think the survival aspect in 0 is in all honesty more present in this game than a lot of the other older titles.
Pieces109 It's not inaccurate, either one has giant animals, I'm pointing out that having an issue with that implies that you also have an issue with other bosses in the franchise. It doesn't matter whether it was on better hardware or not, that isn't the case, it's another classic adaptation of Resident Evil, so some things are to be expected. Better Hardware does not make a better game, you can especially tell in titles of Resident Evil 5, 6 & 7 where creativity is clearly not present at all. I personally think that RE 0 is my second favourite classic game and my first being Code Veronica X.
But in RE1 the animals didnt look too generic as in Zero, and they were Bio-weapons, and in Zero they didnt, and as the other guy said, they had more budget to be more creative and they created generic monsters, also they were bosses not common enemies as the spiders
mickie Just because it came out first or you played it first doesn't make it not generic. If you think about it a scorpion, millipede, bat and whatever on earth the final boss was just as generic as a Snake, Shark, Plant monster and Spider (which is a normal enemy as well). We don't need to discuss the Tyrant since he appears in both games. The spider as I said is already an enemy, it's like if RE0 greeted you with a Giant Monkey as a boss fight with a few little monkeys to make it not as easy. I think your issue with the RE0 bosses is not that they're generic but is more to do with their colour palette being mostly shades of brown making it not as pretty to look at. Though I'd say horror games aren't supposed to be pretty or super colourful, taking away the grit ruins the vibe it was intentionally going for.
RE1's Snake, The Spider, and the Shark (if you call the Shark a Boss) parts are the most unoriginal... they are just either normal animals that have their height grown... or just normal animals. The Plant however is nothing like the Snake nor the Shark. Not sure why you would compare the Plant to either of the two, the Plant actually looks like a freak of nature, a mutant of the highest caliber, kinda like the Hunters and Chimera. I agree, you should be able to criticize anything, original or not, and giant animal bosses are just... really lame. But the Plant Boss is not lame aesthetically. It's not like its a giant dandelion that whips you with its dandelion petals and is just a giant dandelion. Give a bit more respect than just giant thing, its clearly more original than the other three mentioned.
Khotgor I think you miss my point, I'm not criticising either game for having giant animals or the plant, I personally don't mind them, it's different to just having overly mutated things. My criticism is that these games are known for having giant animals, particularly the first game, yet this one gets criticised for it yet it's okay for others to have them. I mean yeah it was the last game to use the classic formula but if you're not basing this off nostalgia and criticising this game for one thing but praising another for the same thing kinda contradicts that statement. Since 0 is a prequel, people could end up playing that as their first game and then following up with the others which could create an entirely different experience for that particular person. Blaming a game for it's saturation of a particular thing that was done before does not make the game worse objectively but it's more your previous experiences that add up overtime that make the experience not as interesting for you.
I liked Resident Evil Zero quite a bit but I also only played RE1 before it. I think most people got burnt out on the series as the games seem to change very little from game to game until RE4 came out.
Idk, i never got burned out on them. How many that are hard fans of the series do you know that got tired of it? If 4 would have been more like re2 remake that would be perfect. It went too actiony. Items drops and such lol
My biggest issue is with the difficulty. Now, I’ve beaten both scenarios of REmake, 2, and 2 remake, as well as C:VX on normal. This game, I had to play on easy. But, easy mode treats the player like an idiot. There’s so many healing items and so much ammo that I end up ignoring it. By the end of the game, I had both players abandon their handguns. But on normal, I’m begging for another herb. I could forgive the lack of item boxes if they had just made a better middle ground with the difficulty.
@@47Mortuus TBF, the handgun is pretty useless in RE1R, granted I haven't played 0 in years, so maybe it's more useful. You get more than enough ammo with the shotgun(s) and the magnum to use them in most of RE1R even on true survival.
Revelations 3 should do something to partner up Leon with Jill and Claire with Chris. Perhaps swap them out halfway through the game. I just want to see these characters interact more a la Revelations 1 and 2.
Leon gets way too much screen time in the whole series and was in all 3 of the fucking CGI films. Jill can feature without him. Have Jill and Claire even met before? They can both be in a film together.
I just recently got RE0 and one of the things that bugged me the most so far is the solo bosses. The scorpion wasn't too bad, I ended up dying because I wasn't expecting it, but the one that really grinded my gears was the centipede. I had JUST gotten the grenade launcher, but I gave it to Rebecca as Billy had the shotgun. I had very little pistol ammo and only like 6 or 7 shells, so when the centipede grabbed Rebecca I unloaded half a mag of pistol ammo and all my shells, and I was completely out. My only other option was the knife, which I tried my darndest to use but it felt like nothing was even happening. I suffered through that fight until Rebecca died and I ended up taking the grenade launcher, the shotgun, and all of Rebecca's pistol ammo as well. That, plus the super tight corridors that don't really let you dodge enemies is pretty annoying so far.
Finally got around to playing RE0! Yeah, I have to largely agree with the enemies, leechmen being especially painful to deal with. I feel like their attacks have some slight tracking to them too, making them even harder to dodge. Definitely should have been either tanky or long range, but not both. The Infected Bat boss was also a nightmare to deal with, until I managed to cheese it with grenade spam on it when the first grenade connected. The small bat swarms it spawns makes especially hard to target it, since your character might auto aim the smaller bats instead. I'm kinda torn with item dropping. On hand, I think its pretty cool how you can leave items behind and they won't despawn. Gives you bit of incentive to try to plot out the best places to drop your stuff at and repick them back up if need be at a later time. On the other hand, item boxes would have probably still been better. You wouldn't have to worry about the item drops being obscured by the camera or next to another interactable object, making it harder to pick up a drop item. All that said, I do still like it, but it most definitely is not my favorite from the franchise.
That effeminate leach guy who wears the dress was way too anime for me. I remember him singing in the hills in one of the opening cut scenes. That shit was lame and made me nauseous.
He was feminine because it was the leech queen changing the body while still retaining the hatred of Spencer. I thought he was very interesting and I liked the mythos and he wasn't anime like that's just you being a weeabo
Just finished another playthrough of this game for a video I'm working on, so I thought I'd come back to watch your video on it. It's crazy how different your videos sound after 5 years. Very fair criticisms of the game, it feels like it would only take a few tweaks foe this game to feel perfect but it had the bad luck to come out as people were exhausted by the original style of Resident Evil. I still have a soft spot for it in my heart though.
I just finished 0 and loved it, but saw videos on why people didn’t. Most of the things in this list I was like “eh not a big deal.” But the continuity between Rebecca at the end of 0 and how she is in 1 is just so glaring! How did the devs not see that???
This game made me love both Billy & Rebecca and seeing them develop throughout the game was a nice touch and there was a sense of tension of keeping them both alive. As for the eliminators you can pretty much say that to any enemy through the series because once you are cornered its over, RE4 I think suffers with this alot more due to how the plagas enemies constantly attacking you even if you heal yourself your health goes down at a rapid rate. I wish there was an explanation on why Billy can't mix herbs but it does force you to learn item management especially since there's no item boxes, I found the puzzles in this game to be alot simpler and that there wasn't that many that you had to memorize alot of details. This was the first resident evil game I ever beaten without using a player's guide, personally the game does a good job with its map layout since if you drop an item its highlighted when backtracking later. The leech zombies and Hunters are a nightmare to fight when Rebecca is alone during the last half of the game since Rebecca is kinda like Jill but twice as weak I found myself having to carry herbs in each playthrough I do when finishing the last part of the game. Even so I love how unique RE0 is and I really hope that in a future Resident Evil title Billy and Rebecca become playable again.
Well Billy Cohen isn't from Raccoon City that i know of and he was a soldier. Maybe he doesn't even know what herbs are good or useless. All the STARS must be familiar with them because they are locals/special forces/chemists.
In Re Remake, she doesnt wear Billy's necklace. Its totally like written off the story, as her nightmare never happened. And I dont understand why they have 2 voice actors for the 2 games. She literally changed her voice over night. And I also wished we could further play her after the ending scene. It would have been very interesting to explore the area leading to the mansion and eventually playing Rebecca and teaming up together with Richard ...
My main problem with Ø is that it didn't add anything. No new perspective is given on RE1 or any other RE game. So what's that point in a prequel that doesn't do that? I'd rather have had a prequel twenty plus years earlier, young Wesker at Spencer Mansion, something like that. Great vid.
Young Wesker would be a dope story. But nah, it did shed some light on things such as the relationship between Birkin and Wesker, Which also would make for a great prequel btw. I'd say the details aren't huge but there were some good tie ins.
Adrien Fernandes - Rebecca is a great character and a prequel showing what happened to Bravo team would have been interesting but that's not really what happened in this game alas. So yeah a prequel to explain more about the T-Virus should have been Wesker focussed that would have been bad ass.
I was playing Umbrella Chronicles two hours ago and was thinking exactly the same. I want to see Rebecca again. She survived so... Where is she now ?? I'd love to see her ten years later. Also, but I doubt it can be made as a game without to be too boring but less action, less scare, more explanations. Seeing the Spencer manor with living people as in an interactive movie and, slowly, see everything going wrong. That's just me, I know there will never be a game like that.
13:07 it's true. A lot of people did feel it was getting stagnant, and I remember zero was the first time I noticed it. But I still wonder how different things would have been if they just took a few year break. They released a lot of RE at that time. from 96 to '02, there were 6 main line RE games, as well as gaiden, survivor, survivor 2 and the following year had dead aim and outbreak. On top of that the first Resident Evil movie came out in '02 annnnd RE ignited interest in the zombie genre and survival horror was exploding, too. So many RE IPs and zombies taking over the cinema, I think RE was doomed to feel stagnant. And with survival horror expanding and growing... I don't think it helped things for RE. I would have loved to see how things would have been if RE4 was a spin off series and the next mainline RE came out around 2008. Then again, maybe it's for the better, I am loving RE2make, I feel like a kid again.
RE 4 can be counted as spin off since the story of it doesnt effect the future iterations and i do believe only returned character was ada alongside leon
Dropping items was brilliant. It added depth to resource management strategy instead of being a packrat. I bought a GameCube in college specifically for the RE games, and while I had a blast with 4 and got creeped out by Remake, this one was my favorite.
Nice analysis! I just got recommended your video and I enjoyed it a lot. It was a really good analysis of a controversial entry in the series, even if you like the game you were able to step aside from your nostalgia and look at it in a more critical view. I will keep an eye on your channel from now on :) Also, what a beautiful voice you have, is really soft and smooth. On a side note, really nice avatar!
What are you talking about. I don't dislike Re0, but Re1remake is a masterpiece. The atmosphere, the horror, sound design, story, camera angles are so much better than Re0. Even the graphics look better in my opinion. Re0 is a cheaper hasty production
I agree with some of the points you made, but I think having no item boxes were a good thing because you had to learn how to manage your space rather than have everything conviently placed for you. And for Rebecca being weak in Resident Evil 1 could be do to here being tired from pulling an all nighter with Billy and killing all those zombies, leeches, bugs, etc. She never had a chance to really sit down and relax. She literally went from one nightmare to another, and this time Billy wasn't here to G.I. Joe there way out of situations. Finally, I thought the ending was lackluster it was extremely fast and no real emotion behind it other than mutual respect and Billy's appreciation of Rebecca going to report him dead. It could've worked if it was longer, but that 2 minute cutscene didn't really cut it. What I think would have been a better ending is having Billy die (Even though I really like him), but I feel it would have made more since story wise if Rebecca was starting to fall for a guy that saved her many times, who ends up sacrificing himself to save her, which would honestly mentally trigger to act the way she is in Resident Evil 1. I also thought of another ending that could've made it if no one wants Billy to die. Just have him and Rebecca escape and have them sit on the hill trying to catch their breathes. and then after about a minute of looking at eacher Billy tells Rebecca everything about what happened in Africa this time in more detail as Rebecca listens. After Billy, tells the story Rebecca asks what he's gonna do know and Billy could joke around like "Why you going to visit me" which makes Rebecca giggle a little bit. Then Rebecca gets up and looks around, "That must be the mansion Enrico was talking about" while Billy tries to look over the trees to see the mansion, while still sitting Rebecca reaches down and snatches his chain off, "Officially Billy Coen is dead" with Billy responding "I guess I'm a zombie now" after that Rebecca hugs Billy and tells him, she's gonna miss him, and Billy's gonna say something heartwarming like, "I'm gonna write. (And right here I would personally have them kiss, but since the writers clearly didn't want that time happen) they would pull apart and Billy would say "You know you won't have to go there right, you're still young and no one should have to experince horrors like that". In which she responds, "I still have a duty to my team, and I have treat the wounds of the wounded (or something like that)". Billy then says, "Well I see their's no stopping you". Rebecca anserws with "I guess this is goodbye" "Yep" Billy says as Rebecca takes a few steps away from Billy then salutes him and then upon seeing this Billy salutes back and then Rebecca goes of to the mansion as Billy says, "Thank you, Rebecca" I didn't mean to go all fanfiction on y'all, but you see how much more impact the ending could've had, but yeah I will probably make my own Resident Evil 0 game review and since I'm also reading the novelization, I'm might do a review of that aswell.
Mr.JayJayExtra Yeah man you’re damn right, that would have been perfect! But well even if some things like that could have been better it’s still my favorite Resident evil :)
@@altitudestudio4120 same, I was super depressed when i played it and it really cheered me up. That game and REmake 1 have a special place in my heart.
The train sections are great. I've loved trains ever since watching Harry Potter as a kid. And it's such a breath of fresh air after numerous games of big area + lab (I guess except for RE3). Kind of disappointing that they do Spencer Mansion 2.0 after the train.
The items thing could have been handled differently. Maybe give the player the possibility to drop the items on the ground, to maybe free a slot to get an item you need right away. But after you drop it it will magically travel into an item box in the save room
Shinji Mikami said that Evil Within is the true successor to Resident Evil (1?)... I'm glad I got all those sceond tier successors, because I really hate evil within... didn't play the second game, though
You made it perfectly clear in the video already. Don't listen to the trolls :)
The film was released in 2002 also
It's a decent games but has it's flaws. One thing that would've instantly made it better is to remove Billy (maybe even Rebecca too) and replace with other stars members. Adding Billy to this story made no sense. I would've preferred more scenes with stars members, that would've been interesting and getting to know them would've made losing them in re1 have more of an impact.
I can agree, lack of item boxes are really annoying. Not to mention you can only store so many items in one room.
best review of the game. The game really does lack any character and atmosphere. There's nothing wrong with gameplay though. I really liked the difficulty, and how the game gave you just enough resources to get you by. unfortunately without said atmosphere, the game failed to be on par with the other RE games....at least for me.
The reason why Rebecca was so helpless in RE1 is because she forgot to drop her items in a convenient room.
🤣🤣🤣 kkkk. It makes sense!!!
By the time I finished Zero, Rebecca had the upgraded pistol, over 250 rounds for it, and the fully loaded magnum with several spare rounds in her inventory. Girl must've got stupidly careless on her way to the Spencer mansion! 😂
Factual Opinion lolz
Or thinking about Billy made her weak in the knees.
David Hale she may have lost it to a Cerberus
Lol maybe Rebecca invented the item box after the events. xD
C. S. yesss
Lmao yes!
That really makes way to much sense
Man, having to treck back and forth across the mansion to move items sure is inconvenient, I'm going to make a space-time continuum box for storage 🤣
She surely had to. It was such an inconvenient haul for her and Billy. It was such an inconvenient haul.
No it's just a retcon. Nothing more.
@@the757general2 not rly because it can still work in terms of the sequence of event. Trauma and survical can push a person to their limits.
@@juanpat3d lets be Real ther mightbhave misrememberd her role
Rebecca has a heroin withdrawal so nobody would believe her according to the lore I just created.
Why did have to say that! I don’t see her the same anymore 😢
"Controlling leaches by singing opera"
HOW ELSE WILL YOU KNOW HES FANCY!?
With a female operatic soprano voice of course.
So this game is a mix between Final Fantasy, Parasite Eve, and RE.
Since I was not interested in 2 of these, I can understand why I lost interest.....
One of the problems this game has is those "fantasy/anime" elements, which also happened in Code Veronica. They just dont fit/work with RE.
The dress gives it away
And hammy lines like "The world will burn in an inferno of hate."
2:25 To add to Rebecca's pros, she throws molotovs much much faster than Billy.
Wait wtf??? I didnt know that o.O
@@naitoflik92 Yeah haha, it's painful to watch Billy throw molotovs!
I remember one time I got stun-locked by a Mimicry Marcus as Billy, all because he took too long to throw a single Molotov cocktail and getting hurt would cancel out his throw.
Man, you just changed my all life.
Rebecca also fires all weapons faster,
I feel like Resident Evil 0 would make more sense if you played as Enrico rather than Rebecca.
I couldn't come up with an original name D: that's how it should've gone honestly
Why the item management is flawed, Say it with me...
HOOKSHOT.
Lol 😂 so true. I've just finished this
Carrying that shit was a burden
Yeah leave it just before entering the tram
4 times you need that fucking thing....
The one item that I absolutely detest in this game
Just wanting to see Billy return in future Resident Evil games just to know if he's still around.
If a character never appears in RE again, they're alive and well
There was a theory that he was captured and actually used as the nemesis project
@@ch33zybreadtrellie4 Omg that's so upsetting
@@Robert399 I thought up a completely different story where Billy and Rebecca go their separate ways and a homosexual man starts to have a crush on billy and after many years they get married. (I want this relationship to be as healthy and not rushed as possible) One day bill somehow goes missing and both guys are trying to save each other while the other guys gets assistance from Rebecca. But yours works too, except for the Nemesis part.
Rebecca was probably just threw all her weapons in front of the mansion and was like “this is a good place” 2 seconds later she instantly regrets it.
Lmfaooo!!!
Definitely how it happened
Its a natural result of making a prequel to something that was never originally designed to have one.
*So I wonder if the RE1 story could have played out just as easily with these changes:*
1.) Kevin, Edward, etc. were just regular RPD cops, the disappearances of whom S.T.A.R.S. was sent in to investigate.
I'm Nobody yeah, simplicity is sometimes the best road.
Honestly I haven’t played it but I honestly like the fantasy stuff in re for the most part
Main charcter should have been Enrico Marini, Captain of Bravo Team.
I hate that you could cough on Rebecca’s pinky finger and she’s already in caution. So annoying 😒😣
That's the point...

I have two main issues with James Marcus as a villain in particular (besides his appearance, dialogue, and singing-opera-to-leeches gimmick, which could at least be retooled better in a later remake/adaptation):
1.) In the RE Lore prior to RE0, the only B.O.W. that Umbrella possessed, which was capable of preserving and replacing a host’s consciousness, was the Nemesis parasites.
Weapons taking two spaces!!!!! TWO SPACES!!!
Hookshot.
I mean cv did have 2 space weapons
But that was because it was dual weapons
And controlling two characters at once and no item storage
The sub machine gun from RE2 took 2 item slots, as well.
It would of made complete sense if small items like keys etc didn't take up a whole slot.
She was exhausted by the end of the game. So 48 hours of her fighting monsters from RE0 to RE1.
No food/water and I think realistically all the ammo would've been wasted on the boss lmao
It is like ppl who face a dangerous situation and managing it calmly.then they panic, cry and shaking.
naitoflik92 yea she handlers it better then some as she was not having a complete breakdown
And the fact that she was pretty alone and by herself, chris don't follow rebecca al the time like billy used to, probably "damaged" her confidence
You know it's bad when people have to come with explanations like these because the game itself doesn't address the issue in any way
I just beat this game in its remastered version and for me it was great, I bought it for the gamecube in 2004 but never went through beyond the train until now, and I loved it, I don't know if its nostalgia for the old games that I played in my teenage years but I enjoyed a lot
It's still executed in the dumbest way possible lol
Thank you for the explanation (no sarcasm) the story makes more sense to me now
I was under the impression that the Queen Leech absorbed Marcus's hippocampus and revitalized his brain activity, ultimately merging with his dead body and becoming one with its creator.
Personally, I find the thought of Marcus reborn to be cooler, so that's how I usually interpret it. ;)
Why must you give me nightmares, TH-cam person?
I'll just say: before the penultimate boss fight (the Dr. Marcus's) I had to backtrack from the lab to the front of the church to pick up the grenade launcher. It took almost 15 minutes 😅
Rebecca will still always be one of my all time favourite characters in the re world
Why? She's so... Bland vanilla damsel squishy bish 😂
Doesn't help that the main antagonist looks like Sephiroth's goofy kid brother.

Visually resident evil zero is one of the most remarkable entries in the series. I liked everything about the game beside the story. The zapping mechanic was cool the setting was cool the old school survival horror feeling was cool. The story was what held it back.
I liked the story
yeah not one of my favorite stories in re but still one of my 2 favorite re games, code veronica being the other. the story in 0 is way better than re6, which just went so overboard with silliness i can't stand it. i actually find the gameplay in 6 really fun but the grasshopper zombies, butterfly zombies, silly looking spider zombies, and simmons, who is basically a t-1000 zombie that turns into a centaur with a machine gun, a huge fly, and a t-rex. it's just so blatantly silly it ruined it for me.
The story was the best thing. James Marcus is my favourite RE Character since then.
Fucking hell, the game is awful, dude.
It still makes no sense that she'd be terrified of one hunter when she was able to handle groups of them just a few short hours ago.
@@strahinjagov Who's to say she isn't afriad? in RE0
Well, maybe it's because she's unarmed.
Hey Dont forget!!! she probably dropped her Guns and items in the some place of the previous game, It explains she was unarmed in RE1. 🤣🤣🤣

Wow
One simple reason.
No item boxes.
It was just so annoying having to run back and forth picking up and dropping off items.
TheUltimateBeing 01 agreed very tedious. The hook shot especially.
Agreed I tend to leave rebecca in a safe room and just let Billy go off and massacre most enemies
HOLY BALLS IT’S AVALANCHE
i remember your retrospective video when you mentioned this.
something i disagree with is that fire weapons are difficult to come by. i absolutely think this is false. they practically throw gas and bottles at you before every leech fight. and if you think that billy is the best to go at a leech man because of his extra stamina.. nah. rebecca throws molotovs almost twice as fast. she's a much better candidate for leech fights, ESPECIALLY if you split your party up first. you can mitigate a lot of bs that way. once i found this out i had a much easier time conserving ammo on these douchers.
@Kyle Bryant
Thank you, I will be trying that soon. I did not know she throws them faster at all and kind of found the weapon useless as a result.
I love the Avalance Retrospective series. I watched all of Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, Dino Crisis, and Silent Hill (so far).
I love this game. The item box absence and a really hard inventory management makes this game a real survival horror experience for me.
Yup. No "Magical Item Box"
One thing you can't argue with, the music is awesome. The theme that plays in the main hall is one of the creepiest tracks I've ever heard in a horror game.
Totally agree! That tune is incredibly unsettling.
The main hall theme in zero is one of my favorite drinking songs. I love the hour long loop lol.
fwwaller~ Agreed, although I can't decide whether the Main Hall theme was creepier, or the Basement Corridor theme. That one also sent chills down my spine. There were other great ones too, but they were the most noteworthy.
That slow rumble is etched into my mind, along with the creepy painting on the stairs!
0:33 After playing REmake many times over the years I never knew you could blow off zombies legs. Learn something new every day
There's even an achievement for it in the HD remasters of 0 I think
I think that's just beta footage
I wish they remake the first in the same way as 2 and 3, and also remake Dino crisis abd Code Veronica while were at it lol
Thankfully they did this in the new RE3R. The team really are apart of the story now.
Zero was so cool. Has it's flaws but still loved it.
The environments were great. Super spooky. I miss the big house in the woods. RE1, RE0 and RE7 were really the only ones that had this setting.
I agree I really enjoyed it, in my opinion it's one of the better resident evil games
Amen
Agreed. I don’t get the hate a lot of people have for the game. It’s a solid title done in the classic style.

"But now that I'm old, I can see everything" hits
This was my first Gamecube game. I remember being so impressed by the background in the train section what with all the curtains and stuff swaying.
it still looks amazing today. i'd love to see a modern re game with prerendered backgrounds and tank controls, but unfortunately that'll never happen. just look at 0 compared to the ps1 trilogy and imagine what they could do on the ps4. everyone but me loves the style of these recent remakes though.
Resi 0 creature design documents:
1. Pick an animal
2. Make it bigger
3. Done
4. Make it annoying.
Now it's done.
3cto the Shotrap Doh! We already did that with Dino Crisis.
any other RE: pick an animal, make it nasty, done.
What's really frustrating is that the concept art of the game had way better creatures it pains me to heart man
Probably because the other Resident Evil games made them visually appealing and they were also earlier in the franchise.
True, but even if las plagas where cool -- their story background was stupid.
I would agree...re4 was needed but it was also that nail in the coffin that later killed the series until re7.
@@forastero54321 i thought the background story was great. parasitic bugs that latch onto your nervous system are very real, and a really cool twist on the typical resident evil virus bullshit.
@@ketongu I'm not saying that the las plagas idea was bad, but for an re game it was unnecessary.
Honestly, re's 4 or 5 should have had a showdown between raccoon survivors and surviving stars members against Spencer. But we had that taken away in a very boring manner just to milk the franchise...-_-
@@nicholasdiaz3733 let´s be honest here, re4 never killed the series, just removed the horror aspect because re5 and even re6 can be so much fun to play, but they´re not horror games at all, maybe we needed those games in the series till the devs could go back to the classic route of horror and give us re7 and now REmake 2
I also hated the inconsistency between RE0 and RE1.
Rebecca goes from being "Ellen Ripley" levels of badass to a useless damsel in distress.
Rebecca goes from "Ellen Ripley" to "Princess Peach"
Maybe it’s ptsd kicking in
I don't know if "useless" is helping your partner giving the serum from a giant snake, saving him from a giant plant attack and helping him fight with fcking monster more taller than her.
Or my last reason is that it's because resident evil have many chronological problems in every game (i'm looking to you re3 and re3make)
Because she was exhausted that’s why she did just get done with fighting leache queen and etc so
Rebecca being helpless and weak in RE1 makes sense too me because I was in military and understand effects of shell shock and PTSD and there are many historic examples of people even experienced people all of sudden getting weak and helpless over time
If you want a good historic example is when general Patton in 3nd world war slapped around a shell shocked troop but ofcourse those effects were not as understood back then like today

The "magical" parts of the game is where it kills it for me. You nailed it pointing them out, the leeches and the opera singing.
The best part of Zero was the train section, after that the game goes downhill in my opinion. But I still enjoyed it even with its flaws. RE0's save room theme is one of my favorites in the series.
Yeah too bad the train section is only like 15% of the game.
It should have stayed as the train section, or used other Bravo team members. At least to make some lore sense.

Would be better if Rebecca wasn't the main character but not sure how the player is suppose to beat the game with a character that eventually dies in the story lol
Having said all that, not sure RE0 even needed to happen to begin with.
REmake 3 wasn't bad, but definitely too short to properly shine.
I can feel identyfied with this comment: Yes, the game isn´t that good. But, do i still love it and it´s my favourite game ever created?, of course.
I'd rather playing 3 Remake a million times before I touch the diaster that is RE Zero ever again. This game sucks ass.
@@handzar6402 you do you, boo.
She also didn't have Billy to act as her crutch.
Yay.
Sooooo not true so we hella week in the most recent resident evil cgi movie she was a damn damsel in distress
@@KuroshiDark omg so true
THAT makes sense. Her not telling Chris about what happened doesn’t.
The game should have been focused on the Bravo team, but instead we got Rebecca and some guy (first introduced and never seen again) thrown in and Enrico seen for maybe a total of 30 secs.
they should put billy in the next revelations game.
This is the biggest problem with the game.
Not to mention, Rebecca didn’t know if Chris was still alive at that point or if he was anywhere around the Mansion yet, to her, Chris could have been in the Guardhouse again or in the caves already, and she was so tired and beaten down physically and mentally at that point, she really probably thought that she was the only one left alive.
that would make sense if Zero was actually released before 1.... it is just an inconsistency, we just have to accept it...
Also she had to help Richard. She was handicapped by that alone.

@naitoflik92
I think the main issue for many people is that many of the bosses in RE0 are not just giant mutated animals, but more specifically giant versions of common backyard pests, which makes the variety feel even narrower.
I kind of wish that when she said "I can see everything" we got a quick gag of her avatar with specter's googles from operation raccoon city.

Also, Wesker and Birkin spend the whole game just watching a monitor. Awesome.
Still think its quite good. It was from that golden era of the franchise and is the last of its kind. Even when RE trips up its still a great experience.
SaberRexZealot I totally agree with you!
It’s great!
Deep Ghoul that's fine as it's fans would still buy it, now it's in a weird spot of fans for 1st, 3rd and 2nd perspective RE styles
The item retrieval quest that pissed me off was the hookshot you need after defeating the bat at the church; I don’t know about you guys but I left the hookshot back at the crash site of the train before the training facility, so I had to go all the way back there and had to fight/avoid eliminators...

I read somewhere that RE0 Rebecca was meant to retcon RE1 Rebecca out of existence because Mikami hated her RE1 portrayal.
Sounds about right, Mikami loves strong girls!
wasn't Mikami in charge of 1?
The Sphere Hunter Yet another reason to love this series.
With you on this
I haven't played RE0 in at least 10 years. I remember loving the new system of item dropping. I would sacrifice some items when moving to a new area instead of schlepping everything...maybe that's what they thought people would do.
That was kind of the idea, I'm not saying item boxes aren't better but they wanted to do something different here to make the game more challenging.
I agree, I don't think that dropping items is as bad as people think.
Never had a problem with it, lol

Items drops and such lol
sdmfbastard ye
My biggest issue is with the difficulty. Now, I’ve beaten both scenarios of REmake, 2, and 2 remake, as well as C:VX on normal. This game, I had to play on easy. But, easy mode treats the player like an idiot. There’s so many healing items and so much ammo that I end up ignoring it. By the end of the game, I had both players abandon their handguns. But on normal, I’m begging for another herb. I could forgive the lack of item boxes if they had just made a better middle ground with the difficulty.
Harry Daniells lol this just happened to me rn I ditched the handguns their useless and just take up space on easy mode😂
@@916MUTE "their useless" yeah - you definitely sound like someone who plays games on easy.
@@47Mortuus TBF, the handgun is pretty useless in RE1R, granted I haven't played 0 in years, so maybe it's more useful. You get more than enough ammo with the shotgun(s) and the magnum to use them in most of RE1R even on true survival.
We need more Rebecca Chambers.
-Or at least I want more-
She’s in the film Vendetta, and looking better than ever.
Yes she is, but sadly she doesn't fight anymore. She's just a scientist now. I love her though.
Jill hasn’t been in any of these films. She really ought to appear in the next one.
I could hear the smugness in your voice when you said "They really suck"
Honestly I'd be proud of that pun too
cheshire catgirl pfp ftw
The leechmen are easy if you have Molotov's . They die with 2-3 Molotov's
@@TheJoaovicente yeah for sure, but it is a lot more work saving bottles for them for encounters. Especially if you were playing the game blind.
That effeminate leach guy who wears the dress was way too anime for me. I remember him singing in the hills in one of the opening cut scenes. That shit was lame and made me nauseous.
As lame as the story was, it's visually a beautiful game though.
He was feminine because it was the leech queen changing the body while still retaining the hatred of Spencer. I thought he was very interesting and I liked the mythos and he wasn't anime like that's just you being a weeabo
@@alejandrocisneros7442 If I was a weeb, wouldn't I like the anime style?
Y'all acting like this isn't a Japanese game
@@alejandrocisneros7442 never thought of it like that, so true.
And yet another girl playing it...
Another Resident Evil with Billy and Rebecca would be awesome.
Albert Wesker IS Resident Evil. It should have an entire game around him. What am I saying ? An entire serie !
Resident Evil : Wesker's Chronicles.
@@Dakien2002 She became a Scientist. U see her again in RE: Vendetta as tht.
I remember thinking the exact same thing when I played it at release. Zero really was a low point for the series, on top of the oversaturation.
RE 4 can be counted as spin off since the story of it doesnt effect the future iterations and i do believe only returned character was ada alongside leon
I guess Rebecca stayed quiet about the events of 0 so that no one would know Billy is alive?? That’s the best I got…
I will keep an eye on your channel from now on :)
Also, what a beautiful voice you have, is really soft and smooth.
On a side note, really nice avatar!
I still think it's the best looking RE in the entire series. It's aged incredibly well.
I have to disagree with you there...
@@jaquanmurphy4431 it still looks great to this day.
Rebecca anserws with "I guess this is goodbye"
"Yep" Billy says as Rebecca takes a few steps away from Billy then salutes him and then upon seeing this Billy salutes back and then Rebecca goes of to the mansion as Billy says, "Thank you, Rebecca"
I didn't mean to go all fanfiction on y'all, but you see how much more impact the ending could've had, but yeah I will probably make my own Resident Evil 0 game review and since I'm also reading the novelization, I'm might do a review of that aswell.
That would have been a great ending
@@jase276 Thanks 😁
Sheldon? :P
The items thing could have been handled differently. Maybe give the player the possibility to drop the items on the ground, to maybe free a slot to get an item you need right away. But after you drop it it will magically travel into an item box in the save room
What do you think of the two _The Evil Within_ games?
Consider doing a couple videos about those?
Richie Godsil maaaaaaybe
I second this notion, love both games but also like seeing other retrospectives, negative or positive
Shinji Mikami said that Evil Within is the true successor to Resident Evil (1?)... I'm glad I got all those sceond tier successors, because I really hate evil within... didn't play the second game, though
