A lot of these "get faster" products just cost so much money it feels classist. If I sign up for a local race with a $2500 setup that I scraped for, and someone else shows up with a $25,000 setup I could never dream of affording, I'm just not gonna be able to compete. So much of the stuff in the marginal gains category are so expensive, but they work well enough to give a measurable advantage taken all together. It's turned into a money game just as much as a fitness game.
There is a real issue of being priced out of races. This is more obvious in junior racing. Although it's not all about the kit, good fitness and race craft can take a you a long way 👉 th-cam.com/video/6dCIEshWuZE/w-d-xo.html
The design of those t-shirts looks like three stubbies that should be wearing the aero condoms. Once you see it you can’t un-see it; it has been killing me since Allen wore it on the Tech channel.
UCI time trials should be ridden on standard road / race bikes. Everyone on an equal level technically, and cost problems solved. Best way to find out who's fastest solo.
Given the title of this weeks show, it was so nice to see Si and Dan talking about condoms whilst wearing fully unprotected T-shirts. That is commitment well done guys 👍🏻

i DON'T know what your talking about guys, Time-Trails are the coolest dicipline in cycling! By watching the aeroposition vs gear on everyone you can get a decent idea of who will ride fast in the TT, yet almost always there is a cyclist with his/her head sticking out like a akward aerobrake while STILL going fast enough to get top 10, then imagine what they could have done with a more aero position! But THEN you need to think, can they produce that power in more aero position? Maybe not! Also a slippery streamlined aero-position looks super COOL! The length of some of the aero-socks though... yea, not so cool..
Between myself and my wife we have 4. 😢 Not impressed with the short coverage this channel gave the issue, showing that they are an advertising channel with very little real journalism. On a positive note: shoving a 1.5L water bottle down the front of your skin suit will get you more watts saved, than a 2000 quid pair of wheels or a new 5000 quid bike frame. On a negative note, all my post race photos look awful now…
You know what gets me? "Unfit" Lloydy is slimmer, better looking *and* I bet also much fitter than me. These days I'm riding six hours a week and still look like I have aero fairings all over.
This Shimano crank problem has been happening for 11 goddam years and they finally sort of address it while how many people have been injured or killed? They deserve, at the least, a very bad time and considerably more criticism from you guys.
Reportedly, zero deaths. In the US, crashes, “joint displacements, lacerations, fractures.” Things I’ve done just from racing. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, a total of SIX injuries have occurred out of 760,000 cranksets sold in America. Six. Extrapolated to global sales of this crankset, that would be 22 injuries and zero deaths. This is the Audi “sudden acceleration” crisis of cycling. Now, let’s ask. How many cyclists have ACTUALLY DIED just racing bikes? According to the US National Safety Council, in 2020, of the 1,260 (that is ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED SIXTY) cycling DEATHS in America, 806 died in motor vehicle-related crashes, and 454 in “other” incidents. And that would be ZERO from this crankset. The UN’s World Health Organization estimated around 56,000 cycling fatalities occurred in 2016 worldwide based on around 4% of motor vehicle related casualties with a cyclist death involved. Cranksets? Basically a non-issue. Motor vehicles? Well, there’s your issue. And as a racer, crashing in races has put me more at risk over 50 years of racing more than any other thing I’ve done besides driving a motor vehicle, the entire time doing that, I was putting more cyclists at risk. And yes, I’ve probably put a healthy six figures of cycling miles on a Shimano 6800 or related hollow tech cranksets and power meter adaptations and can exceed 1000 watts in a sprint (nothing huge, actual numbers higher…). Zero problems, which will turn out true for more than 99% of turned-in cranksets. Just for some perspective. Not in any way associated with Shimano other than I’ve bought and raced a lot of their gear over the decades. 😮
Amazing :)) I bought in 2020 the same glasses (more mirrored) as a prop for a dance performance called Snow, that I created for the National Ballet from Portugal. More connected I am with GCN.
As a young 23 year old cyclist and mountain biker who has worked in bike shops for 4 years now, I think cycling has never been cooler. Modern well-fitting kit, helmets, sunglasses, and fully-integrated aero bikes are objectively the coolest they've ever been. Baggy kits, short socks, tiny sunglasses, and spindly round tube frames with external cables, while vintage, aren't it.
You're so busy making fun that you unfortunately forget how awful poor Stefan Küng's head and face looked after his crash on the Euro TTrial race: you wonder whether his aero helmet was also meant to protect his head (that's what a helmet is meant to do, isn't it?). Had he merely worn a road race helmet, he may have escaped his crash at c.a 60 kph without all that bleeding. Having been saved from a sure death on the Paris Cipale velodrome 48 years ago by the very plain helmets we used to wear by then, at a speed of (merely) 45-50 kph, my answer is: Stefan would have hurt, but not lost as much blood. He looked as if he'd been injured by his helmet.
For the 'Wahoo Storage Stand' in Hack/Bodge, that's a great idea for a setup like what I've got - a permanent indoors bike, preferably vintage and steel. My 1972 Schwinn Super Le Tour would be a bike I'd have no fears damaging swinging it up and down on a permanent indoor trainer. If it wasn't in a dedicated workout room and I had limited space, I can guarantee that this is a solution to minimal floor space availability I'd utilize. (but yes, with a steel bike so that 'crunchy carbon' heart-drop wouldn't ever occur)
Had my Shimano Ultegra crank 'de-laminate' a couple of years ago. Had it replaced and the local supplier received a reluctant refund for me after a little bit of haggling. Glad to see the issue finally acknowledged by Shimano, but it means I can no longer blame my incredible power! As for the race for aero, was it not always thus in recent years? For those of us addicted to climbing, it is more about weight. Trying the Stevlio and Gavia back-to-back and each in under 2 hours this summer, I was glad of every gram I could shed! 🥺
My Ultegra crank - the 6750 - happens to be a one piece crank arm set so before they experimented with bonding two arm pieces that now need replacing. Stick with what works Shimano.
In terms of the Wahoo bike storage - no, it cannot cause any damage since the bike is equipped with mechanical brakes. The only instance in which storing the bike in an upright position could cause issues is with hydraulic brake and/or shifting systems. It is not recommended by any manufacturer to store hydraulic systems in anything but a horizontal position.

Update on the Malibu Tri, it will happen this weekend, but the bike course has been shortened for both race days. They've basically turned it into a circuit course. It should be very interesting since this does not allow faster riders to separate on the course and spread out. Unfortunately, I feel there will be lots of accidents with pros & weekend warriors all mixed together. I will update you guys on Sunday as I will be down on the beach supporting a few friends doing the event.
I have notice the reduction in road speed on my gravel bike on the road, it seems to be negatively effected by having a x1 system because during the up hill and accelerating phases I have the speed of a road bike, but the top end it where it seems to suffer.
I can't unsee it! Si and Dan's t-shirts look like they have 3 willies riding their bikes in an aero tuck, I also can't unthink the fact that they do look aero.
Hmmm, Shimano develops carbon fibre crank spider, decides they can make oodles more money using cheap to make two piece spiders thinking, 'what could possibly go wrong'. Campagnolo makes carbon fibre spiders for years. Zero recalls. BAM!
Agreed about the getting out of saddle rather than shifting down; Si, I remember one time you said your Di2 reported you shift every 17 seconds on average (and prefer being seated). I tend to pop up out of the saddle when the gradient increases...and will do several hour rides comfortably not shifting at all. (rolling hills type roads). I can't help to feel that these are related. I would also love to see Si do a "OoS" training program. And the complimentary one from Ollie going the other direction.
I had excactly that issue with my Ultegra Cranks. Cost a small fortune to replace, but on the plus side now have a power meter crankset! Kept the old broken cranks in the garage until about 3 months ago when I binned them, as effectively the only spare bit worth having was the small chain ring. Gutted now. That'll teach me to throw stuff out. Back to hoarding for me.

Mt. Palomar the Alpe d'Huez of SoCal? Hardly😂😂
Mt. Baldy an hour north by car yes and when the Tour of California used that climb - it actually was compared to Alpe d' Huez. Have ridden both many times and Mt. Baldy is much more difficult x much.
I’m new to the channel and I love the show! Turned on notifications for everything from you guys! Both funny and professional at the same time :)
You have the to appreciate Stefan Kungs approach to turn time trialing into a splatter movie. That was definitely something new.
Si explaing the Shimano crank problem like he's never heard of it. Give me a break.
i still have one of those XTR rear derailliers, with unworn original jockey wheels, i used it for a time to run a 11-36t cassette on shimano 105 10 speed.
Greg LeMond may have looked like a mushroom but he made me fall in love with cycling on that day and that is what counts.
Si's new "shades" might look cool, but it might actually be steaming hot. We were forced to wear something like that during the pandemic, even while on bikes, and i hated how hot it is.
#captioncontest: I guess red bull really does give you wings. And so does yellow jackets.
Ah man that winner was painfully close to my name..... :(
I have a shimano crankset that's on the recall list. So thanks for the info.
Hi Si, your new subglasses really will be cool. I have a clear version of that and tried it last winter. The wind leaked round behind, just like ordinary glasses and it was freezing on my face, real cool litterally cool. I didn't use it again. Good luck with yours.
As far as what we wear to ride, I'm not sure which is worse, the UCI or the fashionistas telling us what to wear.
