I play as "Sisely" (randomly generated name) in a massive 300 player Catan tournament through Colonist.io. I change my name to something anonymous for these massive tournaments as people recognize the name "DylLighted" and rob me because of that.

At 31:00 I explain what "getting plowed" is. It is when the OWS player gets cut off and lose their settlement spots. However, I made a mistake saying that I couldn't build anywhere as I can still build on the 12 brick. Sorry for the mistake!

The US Champ would have bought two dev cards as well :) I had that actual choice late in the US Championship game, went with the two dev cards, and was rewarded with two VPs. Dev cards are almost never bad.

If you're tight for time, you should try explaining your moves in their turn instead. Thinking is much faster if you don't have to verbalize it.

49:37 you missed a free win again. Trade an ore for a sheep (of which there is an abundance) or an ore and 2 sheep for a brick (good deal?) and take longest road. Any combination of trades would have gotten you those 2 roads.
One other thought: at 20:33 I think you should have blocked the 3 wheat to control the wheat production on the board - especially seeing as you just traded 1 wheat for 2 ores a few rolls prior, and currently no one had wheat. What do you think about that?
Would have left you controlling the only other wheat tiles in the game with a production advantage over black as well.
Fun game to watch, nicely executed strategy. Still a lot of unforced errors that you can eliminate from your gameplay though!
Thanks for catching my mistakes! Although not guaranteed, I definitely should've tried for that trade. I didn't even consider it for some reason.
At 20:33 I think that's a strong play considering that blocking the 9 ore felt useless since the players already got ore. If I could do it again I would block the 3 wheat.

Also at 49:37, after you pulled 1 VP, you were just one sheep away from porting for long road. You could have asked for trades or tried to steal it from orange.

I liked your reasoning behind getting 2 dev cards vs getting the second city. I think that I would have built the second city, but later regret that because everyone would be robbing me. Also, because those dev cards helped you locking army. Good chance to learn better strategies. Thanks again!
Also thanks for explaining the concept of "getting plowed". Really, you have a knack for teaching these strategies, because you do it in such a way that it becomes really easy to learn.
hahahaha! The overscrolling at 51:55 was hilarious! I'm with you in preferring colonist over CU. It may be a little clunky and not that beautiful to the eyes, but at least you can reconnect and start games very easily.

Ahahaha at 51:51 where the UI is screwed and you zoom in the browser making it look weirder.
The reason why the map shrunk was you zoomed in the map with your mouse scroller. You can move the map around, zoom in, zoom out with our mouse. It is a very useful feature for big maps with 50 tiles.
This is a UX mistake on my end and I'll think of ways to fix it. Feel free to send me any ideas.

Hey Dyl! Great game you controlled it pretty much the whole time! I played knights and cities with my family today -- I took the dub also. It is pretty fun with all of the different progress cards. It was pretty quick to pick up because many of the strategies seem similar to the regular Catan game. Keep the great content up Dyl!

If you have time at the end of one of your videos, can you explain what all the different resource stats mean, I haven't played on colonist much. Looks like really interesting info. I think I liked the lack of chat better so I could hear your thoughts on your strategy, versus game one. One of the first times I played on colonist I accidentally zoomed in too far and could only see the bottom half of the board, including when I was placing settlements. Couldn't figure out how to undo it for half the game. Still won, hahaha.
Nice job on the win! I’ll try and keep that in mind for next time, but it’s already recorded. I think in my next video I hover over the stats and it’ll explain what it is.
One really helpful tip I learnt from this today is how to counter OWS effectively with the plow!!
I generally play with friends so we want each other to get started before battling it out but any room for an OWS and it's easily game over!

49:37 I would definitely have tried an ore for sheep, or ore for brick trade. If you get it, you can snipe road in win immediately.

At 50:00 after you got the VP you could have gotten longest road and won if you traded for a brick and 3:1 or got enough sheep for second 3:1

He would of had to trade sheep or ore, or both sheep and the ore to get the brick, brick was in short supple at that point, but ore and sheep were plentiful, so less likely that anyone of taken that trade. That would have been a cool win if someone would of taken the trade though.
@@joecamerer2865 Although unlikely, I think it was still a missed opportunity to try. I think most likely it wouldn't have happened, but the lesson to learn here to not forgetting to take longest road to close the game early!
@@joecamerer2865 I just wrote the same comment myself and then saw your post. There's a lot of other trades that could have worked though. With so much wood in everyone's hands at that time he could have even traded an ore and 2 sheep for 3 wood and then ported it into a brick. Or traded an ore for a sheep and then ported the 3 sheep for a brick.

At 40:00 is blocking the 5 wood viable? It doesn't actually block anyone, but it gets you a free wood to build your settlement and ensure you don't get plowed.

28:00 yeah this is always one interesting choice. I would city since you already have a bit of a lock on army which improved the argument for the city a lot? With the blocking of the 5 as a veru solid counter argument. Either way don't think you can go wrong with upgrading, and you could also have pulled a knight and a vp, or no knight at all which could've been bad long term. But like you had the city quickly after so it all worked out, but yeah hard decision
Thanks for always commenting! Here I stand firm in the decision to buy 2 dev cards over the city. I think it is imperative to be able to defend yourself and not get stifled during this portion of the game. The 5 wheat is an especially vulnerable and weak spot, yet its value is immense. Like you said, either decision helps a bunch but I still think buying dev cards here wins you the game long term.
@@DyLightedCatan yes looking back, it's stronger than I thought. though, I think your trading strategy was the most important for the win. like this decision mattered way less than the trading strategy working out, which it did because you played it right. I find it hard to really hold on and not go for the short-term gains (e.g. building on the 3:1 port earlier)
@@DyLightedCatan As you also mentioned in the video, table talk plays a big role. Without it the value of dev cards is decreased so it might have been better to grab the city in this game.
On a side note, your videos have helped me a lot learning the game. I've managed to win all 7 games I've played with friends so far. I have a feeling I will start being singled out soon though.
@@5illyMe that's funny because I've actually hit a slump for some reason haha. I was classically a wood brick player (roadbuilder?) and have tried to play OWS against my fam with lal these deeper knowledge from Dyl but my sister ends up using wood-brick against me haha
Love this undercover series... but in the last video the player who knew it was you says your actual name (something like "I guess we're not working together anymore DylLighted" when you blocked him) and I was like "oh SNAP cat's out of the bag" but I guess the other players havent caught on yet.

Yeah, Colonist can make some improvements. I wanted to trade 2 brick to someone in game (planning to play mono to take it back) and the trade automatically went to the bank instead since I had a port. No way to circumvent that either.

Red shoulda placed his second settlement on the 8 4 10. They woulda had 13 dots of sheep and easy access to the sheep port

What do you think about the 6-9-3, 8-4-10 for red to start instead of the 3-10-11? I feel like an initial settlement with 7 points just isn’t worth it and the sheep port is just one road and settlement away. It denies black and orange the 8-4-10 which is a great spot for them, and if someone takes the sheep port then they are sacrificing all their production

Hey, I think you made a big mistake at 40:00. You could've easily traded a wheat for 2 sheep, then 4 for 1 the sheep for the settlement. Notice there's 10 sheep out there (3 being yours) and 6 wheat out there (3 being yours). You could've easily made that trade, it would unstuck your hand, get you to the 3:1, plus you got 7'd out badly a couple rolls after that - you could've saved those sheep for the ports or the dev cards. Otherwise, gg :D

Basically you need to click at 3s remaining on the clock. The game is slow. At 39:58 you said you stole from orange, but the bot stole from black for you. Also a couple minutes before that the bot placed the robber for ya. Be careful on colonist.

This is going to be a really stupid question but i was missing 2 pts when i counted your cards and settlements. I see the pts from cities and the two victory pt cards but where are the other 2pts? I thought you had to have 3 knight cards for largest army. Love these vids btw and i would love to see more explanations on some of these unique strategies.
Those are the knights in hand I believe. He had used a few prior to ensure he had largest army locked. Correct me if I'm wrong!
Yes, Jordan Asuncion is right. The knight cards disappear when played. The amount of played knight cards is shown right next to the amount of consecutive roads placed (next to the players names, bottom right).

at 22:35 why dont you block the 3 weed and steel from black?
Definitely a mistake. I should’ve stole from the red (for the brick) and probably blocked the 3 wheat.
Fourth player: Sheep farmer strategy: 8 4 10 and 6 9 3 and go for the sheep port.

On your second or last turn you could’ve won by trading your ore with orange for a sheep (which he’d most likely take) then port for two bricks and take longest road

Can you explain why you like colonist over universe? I've only ever played universe, seems simple enough to navigate..
Often times on Catan Universe you get disconnected due to the servers and it is very frustrating. In addition, many people disconnect on Catan Universe and you can't reconnect.
Wouldn't it have been better for red to have taken the 8 4 10 as an initial settlement? Instead of 4 points of wheat and brick he'd get 8 points of sheep which is 4 points of whatever he wants once he gets to the port. He wouldn't be relying on 3s rolling, and wouldn't run the risk of getting his rare wheat poached after it does roll.

Question why red dind't go 6/2 port sheep and 4/8/10 . 4-6-8 sheep with a port i feel like that is preety good. Even better on a turnament (trading more difficult) but i m super bad so maybe is a dumb move?

I was wondering if it would have been better to place the first settlement 1 point to the left on the on the 4/5/10 with only 1 point lower in sheep, pointing the road to the right with the option of either going for the 10/9 wood haven or the 5/9/12 and setting yourself up to place your second settlement on the desert/3/8 with ore and wheat or directly on the 8/4 brick haven. One looses the 12 brick but has the option to get a strong wood trade going 2 for 1 and would have prevented someone from taking that 8/10/4 double sheep spot. Any thoughts someone?
At 49 minutes you could have gone for the win. You had 8 points after the first dev card purchase. You needed to build 2 roads to take longest road and win. You already had 2 wood and a 3:1 for a brick. You could have tried to trade for the second brick
You could have offered an ore for a brick or sheep. 2 sheep for a brick. Or an ore and 2 sheep for a brick
you're so slow its painful, couldn't imagine playing against you in an untimed game
I think messed up initial placement. Since you already had the port road 3:1, you should've pointed second road up and extorted or traded for a wood and blocked black and gotten up to 4/11 and 8 ore spot
Why don’t u point ur 5:9:10 road down to get onto the wood port? (New player so trying to learn not be mean or anything)

Why do you prefer colonist over Catan universe?
It's funny a game that takes 50 minutes, you still have only 4 points at the 40 mark, and then the last ten minutes is just getting 6 points(i know there's a bunch of setup)

Join the Colonist.io discord (go on their website) and they have monthly tournaments! If you want to go to live tournaments, then look them up in your region if your region/country has them. Good luck!
Interesting how you never take one for one trades, or even one for two, unless it's your turn, yet other players would do that for you
Thanks for the comment! I normally would take 1 for 1 trades on other people's turn, I just need to receive an adequate return from it. In this game I didn't really receive any strong benefits of trading 1 for 1 on my opponents turn.
Not a fan of that UI personally. I preferred the one used in the past colonist tournament you infiltrated.
