Trivia about the dog: It isn't an "actor" dog, it's just a dog they got from a shelter and it was only meant for a couple of short scenes. But after shooting them, the dog showed talent and the crew loved it, so they started writing the dog into as many scenes as possible.

And that's what makes it so hard not to view these cultures as primitive. Sitting in your superstitions and not moving to debunk them feels offensive to me - choosing ignorance over growth. Someone told me if I said "Bloody Mary" 5 times in the mirror I would summon her. So I did, and nothing happened - superstition debunked. Ya'll have 1000s of years to figure out whistling at night does nothing yet you haven't - so then I get concerned - how many other false beliefs govern your actions? Superstition is not Tradition.

I love how every Predator/Yautja in each movie acts different. The first film’s was a sadistic hunter, the second was more curious, AvP is cleary an honorable young adult, "The Predator" one had a sense of humor (his trick with the severed arm), and this one is kind of a showman, doing cool tricks with his makeshift weapons, he even walks and stands like he’s showing off. He’s cocky, and that’s what gets him killed in the end.
This movie is great. My ONLY problem is the origin of Predator 2’s flintlock pistol, cause I LOVED that 90s comic tie-in where the original origin was it belonged to a badass Pirate that was so cool he earned the Predator’s undying respect

So the shot of the Bison corpses is pretty historically accurate. French and later American trappers and hunters would just shoot entire herds of bison, sometimes from trains, and just harvest all the pelts and leave the meat to rot. This was later encouraged by the American government as a way to starve the Plains tribes of food.

Not so sure your mention of trappers, especially of the French persuasion, in this context is accurate.
And for the record, Native American tribes also would also kill entire herds starting grass fires and stampeding them off of high cliffs enmasse... but it wasn't a concerted and orchestrated effort to reduce (if not annihilate) the entire population of North American Bison simply to deprive the dependant native population of their vital food and materials resource... which was not committed by trappers, but by the US Government. The French in those days were primarily "confined" to Canada.

They were also technically foreign invaders, aliens in a different sense...killing for their own selfish reasons, just like the Predator. Naru even starts out with selfish motivations as well ("I want to hunt because you all think I can't ", aka, spite), but we see a shift in her perspective with the buffalo scene. Naru learning more respect for life as a whole helps to highlight the difference of hunting philosophies, and what it means to be a true hunter. Which is part of what sets her apart from the other so-called hunters in her tribe, who laugh and scoff at shooting an animal in the bushes.

A *ton* of TV shows and movies are shot up here. The Last of Us was filmed up here, both seasons, as well as several big movies. Ghostbusters Afterlife was done up here, parts of Jumanji, Brokeback Mountain was entirely shot in Alberta, even the snowy bits of Inception were done up here. Interstellar had a few scenes up here, but perhaps the most famous of all of the movies shot here is The Revenant, which was shot here in the winter and used entirely natural light, which in winter is only present for about 12 hours total.

Since I'm not American, I had no parameter to ponder the Comanche nation's ability and technological level to confront the predator, so I found it absolutely genious how they informed the audience of this through the narrative, showing her mom preparing the remedies, her knowledge of the flowers, how the flowers look and their effect on slowing blood flow (so that we would instantly recognize her plan when we saw the flower), how she made, cleaned and thighten her bow, so that we know they can craft their own weapons and specially that fast group work at building a stretcher and torches out of surrounding vegetation.
That way it became clear that they were, above all else, resourceful, and made it absolute logical that she would be capable of parcing the information of how the predator's technology worked.
Every time she learns something, it becomes clear she is looking and thinking about it.
    That was GREAT.

  • @ArlanKels

I absolutely love that the Predator in this uses what is used against him, matching his opponent.
The snake gets the two "Fang blades". The archer gets arrowed, the spear guy gets speared, hell even the bear he fights using his bear hands.
It's just a very well done example of how the Predators are hunting not for sport but for a visceral challenge that gives them true fun.
This is one of the first Yautja that is as close to the iconic comic book/deep lore style that the movies haven't fully embraced.

this is such a fantastic movie. I like that there's a bit more depth to the character and story than other movies in this franchise. The tenacity of the young Comanche warriors in that one sequence was so awesome, even though they stood no chance against it. They fearlessly took it on anyway. I like that even though this Predator is still technologically advanced, he's still using arrows and spears and blades and nets and shields, just deadlier versions. And he only ever uses deadlier weapons as needed; like, you got arrows, k' I'll use mine; you got a spear, check out mine, and so forth.
this isn't just my fave Predator movie, it's one of my fave movies ever! And Amber Midthunder was fantastic. She came to the Comic-con that passed through my city recently. Honestly there are lots of ways of story telling.
      - Im just imagining a warring Feudal Japan era. Samurai clan sent to protect a village being hunted by Oni Spirits (Predators)
-Vikings pillaging villages end up running into a Predator
-Roman Gladiator era in which the Gladiator slaves are sent as fodder for the Roman Soldiers as they hunt a Predator.
      - Medieval Knights perhaps hosting a tournament with jousting, mounted combat, sword fights, and their soldiers having bow competitions. Then Predators show up.
-Conquistadors in South America and then run into the Predators.
-Aztec Warriors. Imagine them actually having a working relationship with Predators. Which they actively have annual hunting battles believing they are warrior gods and being hunted is an honor. The top of the Aztec Pyramids are flat so the Predators can land and then the Aztec wage jungle and temple combat within the pyramid cities. Then make a connection of the Aztec sacrifices and rituals are tied to their interactions with Predators.

Prey is tied with the first Predator as the best movie in the series! As much I really like Predator 2 and Predators this one doesn’t just beat them, it kills them, rips out their skulls and spines, and hangs them on its wall.
Not only did it have intense action sequences, but both the director and writer managed to perfectly balance that tightrope of tension by both showing that this Predator is a truly terrifying and formidable threat while also not making him OP with his weaponry, thereby giving the people a fighting chance. And there is a sense of duality between Naru and the predator, they’re both young, inexperienced hunters who want to face the toughest challenges head on to prove themselves to their people.
On top of that I absolutely LOVED the portrayal of the Comanche Nation. Showing how they were and still are some of the best fighters, best horse riders and best hunters that have ever lived, while also showing how close knit of a community they are. I really loved how they went back and forth between English and Comanche when speaking with each other, there is even a Comanche Cut where they speak Comanche throughout the whole movie. And in that cut you learn Naru’s brother calls the Feral Predator a cheater when he turns on his camouflage to get away from fighting him head on.
But my favorite part of this movie is seeing the story of Naru. She is honestly one of the most tenacious and badass characters I have seen in action or sci-fi movies in a long time. Amber Midthunder managed to be as much of a badass as freaking Arnold Schwarzenegger! She’s even gotten serious praise from cast members of the original movie. Bill Duke who played Mac and Jesse Ventura who played Blaine both tweeted out praise for Amber and said “welcome to the Predator family.”👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
And thank god they didn’t kill that adorable dog 🐕!

One thing I love is how she doesn't become a hunter like the men are, which makes sense because she hasn't been trained the way they were. She doesn't fight like they do, doesn't hunt like they do and doesn't think like they do, and whenever she tries to do things their way, it's ineffective. Instead, she re-contextualises all these other skills, observations and knowledge she has and, above all, uses her mind to become a true hunter, but a very different kind.
Also, that the predator's technology is much more primitive this time around - presumably because it scales the weaponry it uses to what's used by the sapients it's going to hunt. When its prey only has muskets and arrows, it brings spike casters and shields rather than whatever energy blaster it used in the first movie.
