  • Sam Hill is a man that needs little introduction. He is a 3x Eduro World Champion, a 3x Downhill World Champion and a 2x overall World Cup champion. He has achieved all of this while raising a family of legends and all without ever leaving his home in Western Australia. This is one of the most requested podcasts of all time and to get it done after an epic afternoon of riding moto with one of my childhood hero's, and now good mate, was the icing on the cake! I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed making it. Sam Hill...

    Sams such a humble dude and so down to earth . I've only just started mountain biking the last 5 years or so (I'm 48 🙄) and realised he lives just down the road. He's such an inconspicuous fella in the community and although he's under the radar it still gives me a fan boy moment when I see him driving or riding down the road or at the local shops although I've never spoken to him and probably wouldn't knowing his shyness and not wanting to invade his personal space . Great interview Gypsy Tales . Cheers 🍻

    That was the best, thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to get to know Sam better, he is a champion. I'm the same with the mental trail run and the x box, can visualize all my local trails looking though the goggles but can't drive a car on x box looking though the windscreen.

    I remember being 13 years old, running home after school to watch videos of Sam as a way to get me even more pumped to go out and ride. Would come back, watch the same videos again and try to study his riding technique so I could then later emulate it. The dude was literally my god. I remember even spending time on one particular Australian MTB forum to find more info about Sam. Funnily enough I ended up exchanging some messages with the mother of his GF at the time.
    Now, 15 years later at the age of 28 my life is of course way more different - priorities have changed so have interests etc., but the excitement that I used to get when I saw Sam Hill's name pop up somewhere remains the same if not more when given a video of such format. You asked him most if not all questions I would have asked him myself, given the opportunity.
    They say one should never meet their heroes, however, I would like to dismiss this claim as Sam is a hero who didn't disappoint. Sure, this technically wasn't me meeting Sam but it's as close as I will ever get to it. This is the most elaborate and the most intimate interview he has ever done so one can't help but feel like they've just sat there with him for 3hrs.
    Thank you so much for the interview and thank you Sam for the awesome childhood memories that I have only as a result of having had you as my idol.

    IMO not having access to elevation whilst developing DH skills would in some regards a benefit. Riding motos and sectioning MTB would give alot more bike time then someone spending 80% of their ride/training time climbing hills....

    • @Jaeger-AM
      @Jaeger-AM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      growing up in WA its defs not a benefit ! alot of up an coming riders end up being burnt out and quit for other sports since the lack of hills and trails to ride due to being logged since the trails have all been in pine forests. its so expensive for us WA riders to ride anywhere because airlines charge us a bomb when flying with bikes

    Man… never knew who Sam is until this but fuck this cat is a legend. Not from oz or into mountain biking at all so sorry for being such a donkey on the topic. It doesn’t matter what sport, when dude like sam shows up it’s special. Growing up surfing in the same town as Dane Reynolds, sam reminds me so much of him.

    I met him at Newcastle supercross, he was just walking around by himself and I was like, holy fuck it's Sam Hill, I went up to him and was like "Sam, hey mate how you going" shook his and hand, he said g'day and chatted a for a little. I was awestruck, he is one of my biggest idols and i was like in my head hes probably super busy and on a time schedule so I kept it short because i didnt want to keep him waiting, but after watching this I realised he probably would've been stoked to have someone recognise him there and talk but in the moment I kinda buckled hahah 😂

    First gypsy tales podcast I've listened to and I expected more to be honest. So much time wasted talking about your jiu-jitsu, Buddhist meditation and 'isnt it weird' revelations like you've just pulled a couple of cones..I would have rather listened to graphic details of race runs, bikes, team mates, competitors, shenanigans etc..you had one of the best downhillers of all time and unfortunately it could have been better

    1:48:20 interesting discussion on perspectives for visualisation. I think 3rd person is often more useful for technical analysis, because mistakes are often easier to spot that way. However, 1st person is necessary for practicing/visualising correct execution. You are essentially trying to memorise how you body will feel during the movement, because then you experience in your mind lines up with your experience when it comes to the actual fact.

    I remember going to a national DH round at Mt Buller and seeing Sam turn up as a junior, riding his Cortina and dominating. I was one of the people saying "who is this dude?" The progression from there was phenomenal. It's been amazing to watch him go from random junior to worldwide legend!
