Operation Flashpoint (Arma) - a Nostalgic Review

  • Why Operation Flashpoint was (and still is) one of the best military sims out there, and a fun sandbox to boot.
    Download the game for free until the 19th of May!
    store.steampowered.com/app/65790/
    Operation Flashpoint was renamed Arma: Cold War Crisis after Bohemia Interactive split away from Codemasters. Interestingly, it doesn't include the Red Hammer campaign since they don't have the rights to it... but it was the weakest of the 3 anyway.

    Count with me:
    - Non-linear game play
    - Scalable and extendable in every way via modding
    - Never crashes (unless some incompatible mods installed then it's your fault)
    - Wide maps
    - Everything can be operatble
    - Simple but effective unit commanding style
    I spent countless hours on this game, and I wish I have free time to spend more because this game is just enjoyable and you can tell how great it is by the success of its sequels.

    I was in the Army when it came out and remember thinking for the first time that this was the first thing even close to reality. For a start, you'd be under fire, and you couldnt see where it was coming from - that was exactly what we would encounter on exercise and its what really struck me about this being different to games like Delta Force etc. Also, that you didnt have to be some lone SF super soldier, you could be a machine gunner or medic as part of a squad. A real watershed moment in gaming.

    10/10 review. Extremely underrated game nowadays, and that campaign... I still remember the mission where you're stranded and need to get back to your unit... one of the most difficult missions of any FPS i've ever played. Took me a good three days to complete it... Heart throbbing as I hid in bushes hoping they wouldn't find me, then sprinting through the forest with gunfire ringing past me. The amount of satisfaction and achievement I felt completing it simply isn't going to be matched nowadays.

      X_mezo_X You assume wrong. Problem was I always actually tried to escape and make it to the evac point when only years later did I learn that you weren't supposed to escape but defend yourself while staying there. (not just running around blindly like you're humorously stating but instead ending with 20-30 kills as well as the occasional BMP kill too)
      Honestly that you'd assume I'm that dumb is a bit insulting when I was just doing what I was told by the game at the time. (considering every mission to that point had been follow-objective-mission-accomplished) Regardless I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your reply is just very poorly worded and that you aren't just a presumptuous asshole trying to put down other people that enjoy arma/ofp for not knowing every nuance of the original campaign right out the fkin womb.

    I have not and hopefully will not ever experienced War but I can imagine it alternates between extreme boredom and extreme terror, with plenty of confusion to boot. Operation Flashpoint captured this perfectly. One of the scariest and most tense gaming experiences I've had were when I had to hide out in the woods whilst being overrun by enemy troops. You wake up the next day to find your teammates dead and enemy troops heading towards you. You then have to traverse several kilometres of enemy territory without being killed, trying to make your extraction in time. Your heart is in your throat the entire time. It may have been largely scripted but it didn't feel that way.

    • @jasonfenton8250
      @jasonfenton8250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a common theme in veteran's memoirs that war is really boring when it isn't really terrifying. I have similarly never been in combat (the more I read the more unpleasant it sounds) but Arma is the only game that gives me a sense of that feeling. Driving from your FOB over to the mission area, listening to your buddies or scripted NPC chatter, then the vehicle in front gets hit and you're all scrambling for cover and firing back at distant muzzle flashes.

    Awhile ago, me and an old mate of mine were playing a zombie survival custom mission. Us two, some AI squadmates, and an island full of running zombies with a few vehicles and ammo to survive on. Only an hour into the game we were running for our lives, our AI squad mate was driving our only vehicle; a humvee. He crashed it into a power pole at night, injuring all of us, effectively taking out our legs. We crawled out of the crashed vehicle only to be jumped on by two dozen zombies momentarily. We all died shortly after, but that was certainly a great moment.

      there were some guys doing a Falkland Islands Campaign mod based on the Argentinian take-over of those islands and the British forces battle to take them back.
      Harrier jump jets vs Mirage Entende jets? nice. that would be a cool dogfight. the jump jets were barely Mach 1 but the Mirage jets were about Mach 1.6 yet the jump jets kept shooting them outta the sky. Maybe it was because the Harriers could hover or that they had a gunner as well as a pilot? sidewinder missiles that were newer than the Argentinian sidewinders?
      the Brit troops had to yomp [march] to the Argentinian positions because the choppers were all on one ship which was sunk so the Brit troops had no choice but to march thru 2-3 foot deep marshes in freezing cold in the middle of the friggin Atlantic Ocean.

Not enough can be said of OFP. I fell in love with the scenery on Everon, and I'm in the process of modelling Everon in 1:160 scale. I'm running a railway through it to provide operational interest. Not to mention that the expantion packs had content worthy of full games. Most people remember resistance, but Red Hammer was amazing too, even if it was developed by Codemasters themselves. I remember one scene in the beginning of the campaign where two soldiers are talking about how excited they was about finally seeing action, only to have their officer reprimand them telling them that war was no joking matter.
    Despite having crappy, shitty voice acting, the characters felt like people. People with real fears, real worries and real emotions. People who had families and friends, and who didn't want to die over a war they didn't feel was theirs.
    For me, this will allways be the best gaming experience I have ever had. I keep the passion alive by playing ARMA 3 with a like minded community focused on authenticity and tactical gameplay. But nothing can compare to the sheer fear of hearing a BMP roll over a hill catching you and your squad in the middle of a field. It made me understand how much of a force multiplier a thing like that really is. Or the terror of spotting a Hind in the horizon.
    - I spy with my little eye, something beginning with G....

    Great review! Yeah I also loved the moments of "peace" between missions... Well the whole "openworld" thing was such a novelty that I used to make missions for the demo where basically you had to live a lot of the "behind the lines" moments: soldiers just hanging together, patrols, do small tasks in your base. Such great times. Oh btw, there weren't any editor in the demo, so we made missions using text editors... O__o

    During my holidays in primary school, I'd spend hours playing around in this beautiful sandbox, it took me 10 years and learning about arma 2-3 to really appreciate how ahead of it's time the game was. I remember spending hours trying to finish the campaign which was soo long, contrasted to games of the early 2000's, but it was so challenging and rewarding. I remember trying to finish the mission where you're cut off from your team, it took me a good month to finish, I remember I was hit in the leg so I ended up crawling for 2 km and finally found a UAZ in some random house, i was so happy. The final mission where you pick up the boys for a beer after the war was when i knew this game was dope! not too mention all the things you could do in the editor.

    I'll never forget Guba's hysterical Russian screaming at the camera, the fact that they couldn't animate faces well and he had a dull expressionless face just made it even scarier, I was fucking afraid when Guba would shout at me telling me to leave his island, and then the game drops you in the middle of enemy territory with a few satchel charges and two idiots you have to take care of to destroy 3 shilkas at night...those were scary times

      +petargrad Man I save-scummed that mission with shift + Num+ savegame a lot, it's really tough. The trick is to enter the house and wait for at least 30 soldiers to come one by one to the door, where you can easily cap them. If you try to escape without killing them, it's impossible. Then enter a nearby vehicle and pray the T80 doesn't snipe you from 2km away.

    • @X_mezo_X
      @X_mezo_X 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ironicly i entered the house after killing like 20 soldiers from inside a bush then killing more of them from inside the house , the hard part was to snipe the BMPs around without getting killed through a window or without shooting that rocket into the house.
      wasn't so hard for me tho according that i really like to play special forces missions with patience and stealthy attacks :D

The very thought of enemies possibly being "out there" on the map and coming for my ass terrified the hell out of me. Back then when i was a lot younger i could never complete the after montignac mission because of how scared i was being the only guy left alive surrounded by enemies in a forrest of all places but now it's easily one of my favourite missions in the game. This game is legendary!

    I am a combat vet who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. I love arma, I didnt get to play the original flashpoint, but i remember holding the box alot at walmart as a kid, hoping my parents would buy it for me haha. Anyway, I thought from a mil sim perspective, that red river was quite good. Its so far the only game I have seen that works properly in a platoon format. In real life, ( I was a SGT in the 101rst Airborne) soldiers fight in squads, which form a platoon, a platoon usually has about 20 to 30 men in it under the overall command of a platoon SGT who is a SFC, and delegates his orders to his SGTs who lead their squads. I cant think of another game that does that in singleplayer. Red River always saw you in some open environment, taking orders while leading (much like my job) and you had to manage your squad, in battle alongside other squads that made up your platoon, changing levels was about riding in a convoy in an invasion, alot of time in war isnt spent fighting, I found those segments to really add immersion and make me feel like I was in a war. That ontop of the scenery you saw while riding from aircraft, to choppers hitting distance targets, I dunno, to me...it was a great war sim that I cant find a singleplayer competitor too. Im just curious what you civilians didnt like about it. (aside from clunky controls lol)

    One of, if not the best war game of all time. Cold War Crisis on its own is incredible. When you add Red Hammer and Resistance into the mix it breaks all expectations.
    The mpst annoying thing, though, is that sometimes the target system in tanks and helicopters would not work and there was no way of you hitting your target.

    Oh man, this is truly the most important game of my childhood. I first played it when I was like 7, never made it past the fifth or something mission, and still spent hours dicking around in the editor and replaying those few mission over and over. Then I reinstalled my computer and for some reason didn't install it afterwards. Skip many, many years, and week ago I found the old DVD with this when I was cleaning my room. Surprisingly it worked, so I installed the game. And... just... the nostalgia was so overwhelming. Such a unique and unforgiving game with a wonderful atmosphere. This game was something else - I remember the trailer had some tag line like 'fight, run, hide' - it was literally a game that allowed you to do that. I remember the adrenaline of that mission where you are a POW and escaping into the night and not knowing whether a shot would ring out and strike you down.
    Spent countless hours in the editor - loved making set piece staged battles especially. Try and hold Malden from a massive Soviet combined arms assault. What a game!

    I picked this game up when I was 9, in a local charity shop for just 43p. Little did I know that it was the godfather of my favourite open-world military simulators; Arma and from that DayZ, that I hoped I would one day play in a world where I was no longer confined to a windows Vista machine with a 30GB HDD and 512MB of RAM. The radio noises would irritate my parents, and the off-story mission that pitched the US against the USSR would crash my computer, if I didn't die in the first two minutes of course. I loved this game, and I loved the mission creator even more, marvelling at the difficulty I encountered while trying to take off in a sesna light aircraft and trying to populate an area with enough enemies to have fun with in a russian tank. I could never figure out how to get that huge ship to move.. I honour this game above all others.

    All you say about OFP is absolutely true and I feel like I have experienced the same heart-hitting impcat this sim had on my life like you !
    I still have a staple of burnt CDs containing self-written missioins, downloaded ( and modified) mods, and lots of tools to hamper around with all thos files of which every mission consisted. In retrospective I'm sure I've spent most of the time in the editor trying out gear and code - what fun it was !
    I continuously found myself alt-tabbing in and out of the game, having 15-20 different text-editor windows open where I would tweak all kinds of data regarding weapon load-out, behavioours, conditional events and such - my screen was mess and I loved every bit of it !
    When the demo for OFP was released it immediately had me hooked - it was the fulfillment of my wildest dreams of what I wished for from a computer "game"; it was so much more than just "a game" !
    I still love it !

    I remember how impressed I was when I played a magazine CD demo of Op Flash for the first time, it was, as you say, as if they'd skipped ahead of the speed at which the FPS war game genre was evolving and created something that was totally revolutionary. There I was, a real, vulnerable soldier walking and travelling as part of a large group, following orders and only glimpsing enemy infantry occasionally. The journey in the truck was itself a revelation, and I was hooked at that point. The demo had you get into a truck with other troops, it then drove along a road for a while I think before going up the grassy slope of a hill. Just before the crest the order to dismount was given, from where the unit proceeded to go over the top and began to walk to the bottom of the next valley where a hamlet was situated. Hearing orders, seeing AI comrades running alongside you, hearing the crack of enemy shots but not seeing the foe most of the time, it was absolutely thrilling. Then the BMP or BRDM turned up, and we were ordered to retreat and did so with eagerness because I knew me - and my AI comrades - were vulnerable, hastily running back up the slope, and I think that's where the demo ended. I had greatly enjoyed the outdoor environments of Delta Force 2, but with Op Flash I knew I had found the game which would render all other war games second rate, lesser experiences no matter how glossy their graphics were.

    I've played this jewel for... can't recall how many years. So many memories!
    One evening I've started the single mission "Clean Sweep II" around midnight, and ended it around 6 a.m.! Fun fact: the time ingame was basically the same in reality; when the sun was rising ingame, first light showed up thru my blinds. I was... amazed, pleased, elated, and so flipping tired. But stayed awake the same (thank Heavens it was on a Saturday morning).

    I`ve played ARMA but it just wasn`t that good. There was something about OPF that made the game so special back then. The 80s atmosphere or something...

    - also the star map was pretty accurate aswell :D. I gotta agree this game is just amazing still, sadly after ArmA the online community all switched to that. Out of all games from Bohemia Interactive, OFP still has the best single-player experience in term of missions and campaigns not to mention all the user-created content.

    when i used to play operation flashpoint CWC with the resistance addon. i played the game nonstop, i even went as far as staying up all night to see how far i got through the campaign without falling asleep and when i got the game in 2002.. my only thoughts was WOW. this game is so addictive i could play this forever but sadly that all came to an end in 2013 when i could no longer play it anymore. :(

      I remember that anthem was running while the game was being installed as well... just a few days ago I installed it again from Steam (Arma: CWC) and it took less than a minute, too short for a single playback even :D

    I was a kid in the 80s and by the time this came out in 2001 I was about 21yrs old. I actually discovered this game back in 2002 by accident because I found a bootleg copy on the net somewhere and started playing it. So good I bought all the disc. Game blew my mind. Spent endless hours playing, programming missions,etc. So, I'm 38 now and not much time for gaming, but I still have it as one of my treasures.

    I agree with how special it was. I bought my copy of Operation Flashpoint as a pirated version in a dodgy DVD shop in Sarajevo in 2002 when I was 12. We'd just driven from Serbia to Bosnia through lots of war-torn villages and playing OpFlash with its visual similarities to the Yugoslav conflict (landscape, buildings, weapons, '80s feeling) always gives me a kind of nostalgia for that trip because it was such an intense experience.

      Dreadnought Brutally hard? Not really. Sure, you die a lot, but it's not because the game is brutally hard. Practice makes perfect and in this game it's twice a true.

    Unsubbed..... and subbed again :) Operation Flashpoint is one of few great games made by our czech gold hands. I completly agree with you. My and my friend were also doing crazy missions in editor. I was making missions to hold some city, or just make city alive, with buses, cars people, talking to eachother. It was okay.. I played arma2 but i didnt like it sooo much. I hope arma 3 is better. But yea... OF is only one. :)

    • @ZeroMat1
      @ZeroMat1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      those are the same games , same engine , its even sharing some common content ! but yeah the OFP campaigns were totally awesome while the arma , arma 2 and arma 3 campaign will be easily forgotten !

    • @zankeikizannanji9545
      @zankeikizannanji9545 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, engines are slightly different.
      OpF Cold War Crisis and OpF Resistance share the same engine. However ArmA: Cold War Assault has a newer new engine, it was so new at one point that my old hardware didn't even run it properly. I had shitton of garphical glitches and it was running awfully. It did look somewhat better though and currently, you can even install ArmA: Cold War Assault on your Linux computer.
      There is also a chance to run OpF content on Linux, but in that case you would have to copy OpF assets to your ArmA folder.
      But I still miss OpF Resistance and installing ArmA: Cold War Assault is not going to bring it back.

    This was basically High school for me. Love this game so much. Everything about it was a logical extension of the tactical shooter progression. Hiding in bushes, waiting for T-80s to roll by as you know you're literally fucked if they notice you was the greatest feeling. It was tense, difficult, made you think, and just felt epic. Just the fact that you're an 11 series stuck in a skirmish between superpowers made you feel so tiny. It really drove home your mortality in game.
    Even the goofy outdated visuals, which weren't even that great for the time, have a strange charm to them. Such a brilliant game.

    awesome review! i loved this game... i remember the mission to destroy the convoy was really tough. no matter where i set the charges, the wave of attack afterwards always got me, but it was exciting. the adrenaline of hiding out while the enemy is rushing you was insane.
