This game was absolutely mind blowing when it came out in 2001, god knows how many hours I spent just playing the demo. There was nothing else like OFP at the time, probably the next closest thing was Battlefield 1942 later in 2002 which to me was like an arcade MP version of OFP.
The games lighting system and draw distance were mind boggling, and it was the first 3D simulation that managed to capture the feeling of actual warfare. No idea how many hours I spent crawling on the ground away from the russians because my legs were blown up and all my friendlies were dead XD
Was the best man.... I just wish I could get it to work with my newer system windows 11 ?
Try tom Clancy's ghost recon 2001 , it is my 2nd favourite after ofp , it's nothing like today's crappy ghost recon games , just give it a try
Hello, I'd like to point out a couple of things which could make your potential replay a bit more enjoyable :)
1. Turn the Terrain detail in the settings all the way down. The game was designed like that and all the bumps on open fields really don't add to the experience in any way. Also, AIs might act less erratically and it will definitely help the framerate, allowing you to crank up the view distance.
2. Use Tab to lock on targets, this is mostly beneficial in aircraft where you just lock on, release a guided missile from a kilometer away and be done with it. Especially useful against Shilkas.
3. When commanding a tank, switch to machinegun, order your gunner to fire and he'll pick his own targets, mowing down infantry extremely efficiently.
4. Use ironsights and optics, much more precise aiming with those than the crosshairs.
5. I think you had music disabled (?) Trust me. The music is fire.

directing a squad is for me the most fun aspect of the game , letting them do the fighting while i casualy observe the situation
I really liked to get into a vehicle as a passenger and to order one of the soldiers to drive me somewhere. Pure chill
@@alexandermorozov8593 yes as long as the distance to travel wasnt too far because that always seems to confuse the ai because otherwise they drive nicely along the road
@@alexandermorozov8593 I always used to do this whenever mission ask me to drive somewhere. Sitting next to ai driver & observing outside window feels like real world 😁😁😁

20:54 Strongly disagree, I do believe the game cares much about the story, as it does it's mechanics. The parts with resistance are quite sympathetic, as it shows how the natives have to deal with the occupants.
I doubt I sunk more hours into any game other than Operation: Flashpoint. I even bought it twice, the original release and the one with the DLCs and boy, I spent thousands of hours playing the campaign, creating missions, modding etc. The modding community even carried over to Arma games, one surviving example is RHS. Man, this brings back some happy memories! :D Thank you for this awsome review!

I used up 4 years of my lifetime in this game. Made my own Missions. And on Lan Parties we played them together.
back 12 years ago on the escape from prison mission, i put the game speed on high then made a dash behind a building then storm out the base before being forced onto the Hind...
Idk if it’s just me, but the resistance missions give me red dawn vibes.
I used to play with this game for HOURS when I was 18-19yo. I absolutely loved it and back in the 2000s when this game was new, I found the graphics very very good!
I'm currently playing this very same campaign in Arma III, it's very easy to set up as you only have to subscribe to a few workshop items and then you're basically set to go. It's very cool to be able to play Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis/ArmA: Cold War Assault with a newer and better engine and modern graphics!
back when i payed it it was ipossible for me to complete sice the light hours in arma3 are different but the time missions took place was the same...so that in the missions when you relied on the night cover you need to cheese them since the day breaks before you can complete the mission normal way...also the lack of dmg some guns do in arma3 is sometimes a problem but its not that bad and is rather pleasantly challenging if you are used to the original
I would rather recommend playing it on ARMA 2 engine, because the way I see it the missions and the look of the game is more fateful there to the original, just more modern.
But ofc I expect the campaigns to be made with Reforger/ARMA 4 engine down the line so that would likely be even better experience
In PC you can use F12 to increase how time upto x2, x4, x8 so that when you are crawling you move fast and don't have to actually spend hours moving.
He's a corporal, so it's not basic training - he would've done that a long time ago. He's just stationed there

I got this game for Christmas like 20 years ago, absolutely loved it. Ended up downloading it again on Steam along with Age of Empires/Mythology and the nostalgia blew me away!
My first play through I stuck to what the game expected and immersed in tactics as the characters would. The second play through I was stealing Hinds or T-80's and just racking up kills all over the island 😂

Great to see people still enjoy one of my all time favourite games. I play it every 2-3 years and complete all the campaigns from Cold War, Resistance and Red Hammer. It's just such a great game, even now, but obviously it looks out of date.
One thing I did notice from your review was your lack of using the ironsight or 3rd person view. Not sure if you knew about it or just didn't like using them. Great video :)
Totally agree. My channel is all about Flashpoint and Arma. Although I am not a hardcore gamer anymore. It's more of a hobby now.

Im late but man, you could use the V to aim down sights, even with the tank and turret, the f key also is used to walk and aim and numpad enter to 3rd person view
Thinking about this game - and it's expansion Resistance - quite a bit lately given recent news. I'm no longer a gamer, and haven't been for 15 years or so - but Operation Flashpoint back in 2001 was my absolute fave. I loved this game, I absolutely loved it. Was great to relive it just now with your video.
I actually ran all the way to Morton on that night time mission once when the Nato forces evacuate and nothing was there.. I was quite disappointed that they hadn't accounted for this contingency so I unpacked the PBO file and edited an alternate ending to the mission where you actually get evacuated.

@@War_Junkies Yeah you can edit any mission in the game, you just need to unpack either the mission .PBO file or Campaign .PBO file and copy the mission folder into your username/missions folder and you can open them up in the editor.. You can make the entire campaign Co-op if you want to, edit them in any way to your heart's content.

Amazing masterpiece, and i think, the best campaign in the Arma series. I remember when i first bought it; it felts SO different to any other war game. I wasn't good at it; it was too hard; i was too young; so i left it there, but it got stuck in my mind anyway. Years after, as i loved the war genre, and this game was the most 'REAL LIFE' thing i had experienced, i decided to give it another try. I started to advance in the campaign and some missions started to be REALLY difficult for me. Sometimes i've spend an entire day (hours and hours) on just one mission. But somehow i felt the experience was worth it. It was a challenge and it was a 'real life' scenario. A training. (And i was still kind of young and i also didn't know a lot of things about this game, like the fact that you can hide in bushes, or that you can fast forward-)
The first mission where i got stuck is in the one where you are left alone and you have to survive by your own in the middle of the enemy territory. It was very difficult, but it blowed my mind. It was an amazing twist of the plot in this 'military simulator'. You were always with your partners, with your squad, but now everything went to shit. The game kind of told you: "what are you going to do now? It's all on you". And so from now on, there was gonna be a lot of interesting amd varied missions, and plot twists.
SPOILERS
In the campaign, you start capturing; but then the enemies take your territory and you have to retreat (TWIST) and you become a lone survivor (TWIST). You finish that mission, by being captured (TWIST), but then a group of rebels rescue you (TWIST) and you join them (TWIST), but then you're able to come back to your own forces, and they ascend you, so now you have men under your command (TWIST and a whole new gameplay mechanic). Meanwhile you have sabotage missions; tank missions; pilot missions; patroling mission; guard mission; escape captivity mission; find your allies in the dark mission; infiltrate in the enemy general's house and steal documents mission; final assault mission; final base sabotage mission; and finally, a chase to capture the bad guy and destroy his nuclear weapon. I mean, you in this 'military simulator' you even get a chase and a 'save the world' kind of scenario, just like in a big Hollywood film, but of course, with a lot more realistic tone. And depending on what you do in this mission you can get DIFFERENT ENDINGS. You can kill the bad guy but not stop his bomb; you can stop the bomb but not the bad guy. You can arrest the bad guy or kill him. Or you can completely fail, that also gets its cutscene, i believe.
But then the game gives you a one last interesting mission and twist: you get to play an epilogue driving and exploring all of the island where you fought war. In this military simulator you even get to know PEACE. You get to see WHY WE FIGHT WARS: to get this. And it's a bold idea for a videogame. It's kind of what Red Dead Redemption would do 10 years later. And you want to know something funny? Even THAT epilogue was kind of hard and also realistic: i've died on car accidents in this mission.
END SPOILERS
I started the expansion, RESISTANCE, and it shows another aspect of war. You start LIVING. You go from home to your work (i think you take or can take the bus). When suddenly, the town and the island, YOUR HOME, gets invaded by outsiders. You have to escape and you have to join with the resistance. Then you have to get resources (kind of similtar to the Arma 3 campaign) and fight in a more guerrilla warfare. I left the game because i was tired of the AI, and the missions where becoming too complex to coordinate with bots (try to coordinate an ambush to a convoy and steal supplies only using commands to stupid bots). It would be a much better experience if you could play in coop with friends. And speaking of it...
I replayed probably a last third of the main campaign with my brother in coop, using a mod. The experience was half-good. In the good side, i got to coordinate with my brother and be a lot more efficient in some objectives. And even have very funny moments. But on the bad side, some of the missions were very broken and weren't playable without a lot of pain. In some there was no way to avoid that the missions were designed for just 1 player. The helicopter missions was very bugged, and you even couldn't grab more than 1 heli. Something similar happened with tanks. We couldn't finish nor really play the jet mission, and the escape captivity mission wasn't even playable for 2. It was a real shame; there could be a lot more done as 2. Imagine escaping prison as a couple; or actually driving two jets/helis and attacking a base.
Anyway, great game, and a good one when you can share it as well. There are some coop missions, though, outside of the campaign. And a lot of mods to play anything you want, as i understand.
AWESOME FRANCHISE. I also played Arma 1 and Arma 2 campaigns, although i didn't like it as much as this one, and i'm currently playing the Arma 3 campaign, that i'm liking much more than the previous 2. But ouside of campaign, the mods really make this game. You can play however or wherever you want. I started playing a little of WW2 with DLC Spearhead, and a little Vietnam with DLC Prairie Fire. And i joined a clan, where we play different missions as an organized force, with realistic mods and currently in Ukraine.

Well done! 2001 OFP cwc is the Best game ever. I did not know it was rebranded into Arma until I seen this video on 5/28/2024. I just bought Arma on steam for $1. Thanks.
22:25 a really cool idea would be to use modern AI and put it ins some old Games like that. And the what would happen. One of my new Game Ideas what i have.

No offence but I love guardian mission , taking m113 to search enemy & after killing enemies telling convoy to move is what it makes it so realistic
I like it too. In Red River, they took it to a new level. You can earn a trophy 'Unstoppable' by clearing out the enemies without ever halting your convoy. I know many hate on RR, but I loved it just as much as the Bohemia's original Flashpoint.

@@truepatriot3768 That's understandable. For me it was a dilemma. But After Arma 1, which I didn't like, I followed Codies' franchise. Really loved both Dragon Rising and Red River. It wasn't before ARMA 3 that I began playing ArmA (only the 3rd ArmA).
Every time i played the mission i never took the m113..... you learn something new eveery day i guess

I fully remember getting captured and having to escape from a tent in the middle of the night and find my way back to a base using the stars.
Great review for a great game! I remember playing the patrol mission and the AI was driving the jeep and it went too fast over a bump and flipped the car and we all died lol XD. But im surprised you didnt mention the outstanding soundtrack of this game.

I don't know if you are aware or not but there is a button that lets you use the iron sights. I saw that you seem to use only the crosshairs - and many people do play like that. The controls settings menu is a bit unintuitive in my opinion. Not sure what the default is. Maybe 'v'?
this game struck a chord with people, assuming you could get past the bad visuals, WW4 EXT mod is highly recommended by me, it breathes new life into it.....the mission editor is endless fun!!!!!
Would be cool to see you cover Red Hammer (An expansion made by codemasters) or the Resistance expansion which is included by default.
You should also do the single missions, they're a bunch of one-off extra missions.

17:48 on Windows XP you could use full view distance no idea whats wrong with this when you use Windows 10 or higher. I have the orginal games at my Parents place. I have to try myself why it does that.
Great video. I played it back when it was called Operation flashpoint and it put up on journey of Arma games that is since 2001 and practically playing every week since 2010. The last after war mission was not in original game but was added in Operation Flashpoint Gold. Which I agree is great to play through liberated Everon gojng through all the parts where was fighting but now is peace. Also dont forget to mention single scenarios which some are more memorable than Campaign missions. Some where so popular that they got their own remake in later Arma titles.
For anyone that wants the same experience but in new suit, there is Arma 3 mod "cold war crisis" by Cnotk which is complete campaign remake for Arma 3 that is just as playable if not better than original Flashpoint. Im already on my second playthrough.

@@TitusReviews Hey, you should check the new cold war campaign in "cold war rearmed 3" which is as good as previous cold war campaign nremakes but this one is with all original units and weapons.

I would suggest installing ww4 and the new drivers, ww4 includes some animation and fov changes that make the game much more enjoyable at least when playing in 16:9, also, crcti allows you to conquer whole islands with bots, and if you can find totalyugowar and dvd cti mods, youll have a lot to play, and please link if you do, id love to play some of these again
This is a re-release of the original, BEST, military simulation, Operation Flashpoint : Cold War Crisis. Unfortunately, it contains only one of the 2 expansions but they can be found here and there. Now, the newer ARMA games, are a weak effort to catch the spirit of the original game. Short , uninteresting single player campaigns, their main focus is multiplayer, which sucks cause it's too disorganised. Besides, you know how it goes, players sign in to play mp, only so they can "....kill something..." No effort to work as a team, considering that most of these kids haven't done time in the military. One comment read " I prefer Call of Duty". LOL.
This game is incredibly realistic, you fight on foot, drive and pilot tanks, A10 Thunderbolt, helicopters, civilian cars, trucks, jeeps and even farm tractors. Many different views, 1st person, 3rd person, scope view, iron sights, You can go from 3rd person to iron sights view directly. The vehicles are having their own targeting systems and even a battlefield view when you command multiple units, be it infantry or a tank platoon. Call of Duty, my ass, it's got nothing on OFP, just a walking gun that shoots at everything that moves. Operation Flashopoint Cold War Crisis or ARMA Cold War Assault, as it's 2012 re-release is called, requires thinking and strategy.
It's tough and it will test your patience but it's one of a kind. None other simulation comes close to it on realism.
Who knows if that excluded expansion is worth it, honestly. Imho there was but one good - damn, even great - mission, where you drive a partially repaired T-72 with incomplete crew to fight your way through large numbers of M60s. That was heavy metal alright
You can copy the pbo-files from the disc to play "Red Hammer" in ArmA-CWA
I just got Arma armed assault. Is that the sequel to this one? I thought A:AA was the first Arma game. Just getting into the series
armed assault came out in 2006 while this one released in 2001 and got rebranded in 2011. so this one is like arma 0 and armed assault is arma 1
Armed Assault is officially ArmA X now, so the series goes ArmA: Cold War Assault, ArmA X, ArmA II, ArmA 3.
So Armed Assault used to be the first in the series until the first operation flashpoint was rebranded to re-release it and make the titles consistent so people know they're part of the same series.
