I deleted Instagram on my phone and decided to sleep and wake up super early to start writing very early, while the neighborhood is quiet. I had very bad time management and sometimes wrote in the library, but driving to and back takes time so I'm going to try to save that time for more writing! I'm using a habit tracker this month; one of the things I'm tracking is NO social media for the month! (Instagram & TH-cam are addictive distractions!) The only exception is when I'm notified for your / Abbie's writing videos!
As a writer, social media should be more for business development than personal entertainment. With that mindset it'd probably be easier to maintain self-discipline.
Thank you for this 😄 I spend way to much time on social media, so a few weeks back I deleted Facebook, snapchat and Instagram from my phone, and changed my GB from 40 to 1 a month, starting tomorrow 😂 did download Instagram again though, but will do my best to avoid reels ... that really gets me stuck. It's so unhealthy. But yeah, habits are not broken in a day, and I keep working on it. Reading and gardening have gotten more space, but Im still to much on TH-cam. I might get audible, since I mostly like to hear someone talk while I do stuff. I struggle with bad health though, so it's nice to have something to watch on bad days. And I love your channel 😄 you do amazing work.
Cal Newport, a prolific writer on the topic of digital minimalism and “deep work”, responded to his agent who told him he would sell more books if he participated in social media, “If I spent time on social media, I would not have time to write 9 plus books.” (paraphrased from an interview)
Wow, this really helped me get back into creative writing mode. :). Since summer's here, I have plenty of time to write--I just need to be focused on my writing project more. Thank you both!!!
Always appreciate seeing people who reach a lot of their audience via social media explaining how it can be done and you can still keep a healthy balance. I know you all talk a lot in your first episode of the podcast about digital minimalism and strategies you use to limit it, but would love to hear a bit more of a day-to-day idea of how you balance being present on social media as a creative with digital minimalism. As an aspiring writer, creative, artist, etc. it seems so NECESSARY to be so present and active on social media, but I am so certain that is NOT what I want in any aspect, and don't want to feel so tethered. I suppose I'm wondering, for both of you, how do you balance connecting with your audience via social media, with not constantly being present, all while trying to grow a community via your work? HUGE question I know. Would love to hear both of your thoughts on it, whether comment, blog post or episode! Thanks for always giving such thought-provoking and inspiring content for us!
So true! I recently signed up on FB and what a nightmare it turned into. I was flooded with "friend" requests and feeling overwhelmed I followed about half of them and then the nightmare began. Offers and requests from A-Z. I can't even go on my own page without being harassed the moment I appear. It's as if these strangers are trying to take over and control my life. I rarely go on the page and if I do it's for about 30 seconds and then I'm out of there. lol
Love the digital minimalism concept, Kate you talked about this in previous videos and I have been trying to implement some of your advice such as using apps on their desktop version rather than mobile. Game changer!
So what you're saying is we should stop listening to youtubers and other people we don't know on social media, but most of us don't personally know you so... Jk! You're the kind of people I want to emulate!
I once recorded a whole improvised album of piano music when I lost internet access and was sitting in the university hall after a working day in the lab.
Well this happened to come up on autoplay and I'm glad it did! I kind of love the algorithm in a way because it helps me find more things that inspire me. But I definitely agree that the more social media I consume, the less energy I have for creativity. I notice that I need to be very careful about what I consume. Really enjoyed this episode and will be hopping over to enjoy some other episodes on my Podcast app.
Wow, this episode must have been REALLY good, because I felt like I'd only been listening for a few minutes before you guys were ending! 😂 Great points! I'll definitely have to reconsider what I'm following now.
Do you happen to have a link for the social media planning tool you both use? I'm totally into the idea of minimalism. I currently use Canva to develop and schedule my posts (everything but Instagram, which isn't supported), but I was both excited and intrigued to learn there's a platform that would allow you to do all that AND respond to comments on those posts as well 😊

I got so addicted to social media, I was spending HOURS upon hours on it and wasting my day away. I haven't touched my phone in a week because I know if I do I'll just get on social media. I don't want to delete the apps either though!

The funny thing about uninstalling apps... they're SUPER easy to reinstall lol 😅
This is EXACTLY the sort of content I've been looking for. Thank you both.

Writers are told they must have social media. As a person, I have zero use for it.
