And on the flip side, there have been times when I felt totally inspired and sit there and pump out 500 words and then I come back a week later and I’m like ... “what is this trash?” Lol
As someone who lost 20k worth of words along with my wattpad account and is now traumatized, everything I wrote after seemed broken to me. Like every word or senrence was out of tune or like it was not working. I was bitter and sad. It was so hard to pull myself out of that dark pit. But then I started to fight that darkness and get out of it and along the way I found your videos and started to follow some of your advice. I changed for the good. I had found the light and my mind was cleared. I had gotten better. Thank you. Just wrote 500 words before this comment. I am so grateful.
So sorry that happened. I don’t know if you ever heard of Scrivener? Abbie swears by it and has videos about setting it up etc. She and many other authors use it. You can do a free trial for thirty uses not days - uses…so you could use that program to write your stuff on it as a backup but more importantly once you finish your manuscript you can generate it in different formats - like EBook or other formats. That way you can have a backup original that you can then export to other formats / platforms maybe? I think it’s $60 or so to purchase but no monthly or annual fee structure - unless you want to upgrade to subsequent versions and even then I think you get a discount. Google docs may be a good option too - to back up your manuscripts and maybe at least one external drive option too like a thumb drive? But you have to be good about keeping up with all your changes on the thumb drive. Way to go picking up the pieces! It’s a year later. Did you keep going? Never too late to pick it back up! 😀
Just what I needed! For almost 2 weeks I could not write a single word because I feel stuck and unmotivated. Great tips and great podcast - you rock, sisters!
@@emxry yeah...2 weeks meanwhile a month after focusing on different things in life and after writing daily 500 to 1000 words...It feels like a long time to me, though not for you in comparison. however, have you picked it up again yet?
Your advice on writing space reminds me of John Gleese's (of the Monty Python) advise for getting into a creative mindset. Rule #1: Create a time and space oasis. This means defining beforehand when and where being creative is OK. Because being creative and novel and whimsical and breaking the expectation is not cool all the time - say: everyday chores, paying bills, trying to find your train platform in a hurry. So one has to decide the creative time starts NOW and is valid for 2 hours (or 15 minutes or what have you), and it happens "in my writing space within 2 meters form my desk". Or "in my seat in the bus". That frees the mind to be creative without worrying about breaking anything. Gleese's other rules are #2 Make mistakes #3 Stick it out #4 Keep a light hold #5 Humor. Simple, but I have found them very effective.
Can y'all do an episode on writers not being big readers?! 🤔🤨🧐🤫😯😧😨 I've heard Abbie touch on this slightly. Reason I'm asking because this is something I've been struggling with myself (which I guess ties in with the imposter syndrome). I had stopped writing for a while because "how can I call myself a writer if I'm not a reader." And let me be clear, I've always read a book or three but I wouldn't venture out to say I was a reader reader. Case in point... TH-cam! I'm constantly amazed at the amount of people with veracious "reading habits" (I'm amazed at the amount of books that people read). And it's hard for me to even admit (sort of publically and even out loud) that I'm no where near that capacity of readership. So I have kind of stopped writing in order to catch up on my reading [list]. And yes I'm enjoying reading; as I should because I think writers should enjoy the act of reading. But with that said I have basically no writing life. Idk I would just like to hear your thoughts on the subject because I thought I was alone on this, then I heard Dan Brown talk about this, some time back, and he caught alot of heat for it and then I heard Abbie touch on it which made me think that I might not be alone...
I've not read any books proper. Way more better things to do than that. They bore me and my mind wanders to my own problems and philosophies. But I have to write a book about my preposterous life events now though. I'm glad to not have any influences. I get to totally think for myself. Everyone else is likely alluding to their influences when they write, which pollutes and debases their writings. My book gonna be a classic, so yh, do the same as me, I guess.
Even though it may seem like piddle puddle nothing. I write on Microsoft Word... I have the app installed on my phone. I've been finding my life more clogged lately so I've been trying to take my story as little as one paragraph at a time.
Paragraphs count towards the goal until you can do more. I think it’s like saving money. It doesn’t matter if it’s only $5 as long as you do it consistently. It adds up over time. 😊
I really enjoy Kate's advice I'm going to start that trigger advice, I used to do that with my first novel, every time I wrote I wore a navy shirt. weird but that's what it was for me.
The accountability thing really works. I am sending whatever I have written of my first draft every few weeks to my best friend. She hates reading, but she reads my story, she really seems to enjoy it, and keeps asking what is gonna happen next when she finishes what I sent her and that is so huge for me. It has definitely made me write my novel faster, while also paying attention to quality as I know someone will be seeing it haha. Now this doesn't mean everyone has to send their first draft off to people because that is scary and maybe not for everyone haha, but I am glad I have a friend to whom I can. It is very motivating.
I have a friend like that too. We're both writers and we've both sent each other chapter-by-chapter as we wrote through our stories. Its kinda fun going on the journey with someone else and personally my friend sometimes inspires me in ways I didnt think of previously. Good luck with your novel!
I haven't watched the video yet, but one thing that helps me do the things I don't want to do (mostly chores and paperwork) is to think about future me and how grateful I will be to have done the thing. Never though of applying it to creative activities but it could help?

ahhh yes. those are the days i question my life choices and ask myself, "are you SURE you're a writer?"
As someone who lost 20k worth of words along with my wattpad account and is now traumatized, everything I wrote after seemed broken to me. This one was EXACTLY what I needed. Focusing on how I'll feel later is such a simple process, but I needed to hear you guys say it!! Thank you 💗
That dressing up like character thing is so cool. I will try it

Only 2 weeks?-
I haven’t written in 2 and a half months-

Your channel has inspired me so much through the years, I have gained so much more interest in writing and I wanna start a TH-cam channel soon

Random comment: Since the "&" is between you, shouldn't Kate sit on the left? 😅

Never though of applying it to creative activities but it could help?
Ah. Classical conditioning. Works for me! Ring the bell of "drinking coffee" and I will .... salivate a novel?? Uh... I'll work on that. 😅
Thank you
A trigger recipe. I love it.
Good video. In my case, I've not written anything in 6 months because my mind is completely empty.
Atomic Habits, by James Cleary has good ideas.
I read through notes and previous chapters I wrote to get into a writing mood.
Yayy!!
@@Addie_48 thankyou!! You too!
🌟
you and your sister look good together.
Oh, hey, y'all switched sides. Do y'all always alternate? I've missed a few of the latest videos.
Basically write instead of watch Netflix ha ha
Lovely eyebrows.
it sounds like it the Abbie and Kate show
