I look at band websites first, I try get authentic licensed patches first, then eBay and etsy. You can use bing and google after that and may find obscure metal webistes with merch that way. General eBay tip; put item you want in your Watchlist, often if you wait 2 or 3 days you'll get an automatic private offer of 5%-10% off items.

I have a friend who refuses to buy patches from ebay, ive bought 90 percent of my patches from ebay and all of them are really fucking nice. My friend got a printed speak english or die patch while i found a pretty much perfect woven one from ebay.

I like the idea of a 2 patch thing for every band, the first good album, and the last one before they fell off. So death would be like you had it, Black Sabbath you stop at Sabotage or Vol 4 depending on which school of though you belong to there. Pantera you skip the early glam shit. Only problem is you gotta replace patches if a band comes out with a good album.
So what's the consensus of mixing genres/patches on a jacket? I have a lot sewn on mine that are punk, metal, classic rock (the majority are from live shows, minus the classic rock)
It's your jacket so put what you like on it, as long as you listen to the music. If most of your patches are from shows, then that is a true battle jacket. Awesome!
I'm starting my own jacket that is going to only have Canadian Metal and Hardcore bands. I made a back patch from an old Cancer Bats t-shirt and sewed the bat skull I got from one of their shows on it. I have a Hellbent patch to put on it too, I'm just a slacker. Also, I want to only use patches I got from shows.

I just recently got a jacket and starting my battle vest but does it really matter if it's clean cut or fray look to the vest?
It's your jacket, it can look however you want it to. If you've cut the sleeves off, it will fray over time.
