@@tessajalloh3914 to be specific, was some implication that something had put a seal on the silvertear lake that greatly limited the flow of aether. Which was either shattered by the explosion of the flagship or Midgardsormr was the source of the seal (which would tie in with how he strips the WoL off the Blessing going into HW.
Silver Tear lake is suppose to have beneath it the source of all aether (and possibly where Hydaelyn rests). When the battle in the skies lead to the ship exploding it "cracked" the seal on that causing aether in the region to become more dense which allowed primals to be summoned again. IIRC the reason beast tribes lost the ability to summon is due to the mass summonings done in the past causing aether to be more scarce which neutralized their ability to summon. I could be remembering that last part wrong though so take it with a grain of salt.
There's something so entertaining when it comes to watching a hungry loremaster. They're interested, but their belly is empty. And when a tiny morsel of lore comes out they attack it without mercy, notetaking and all.
Oooh, I somehow never saw this video. I thought it was just another joking look at the game quality, rather than a lore recap. I had managed to piece together most of this lore from quests and retrospectives, but I hadn't realized that the floating islands in Heavensward was caused by Nael summoning Meteor. That really helps put that area and the final Heavensward zone into context for me.
Wooo someone as addicted to lore as I am. Warcraft had such an amazing setting and story but I feel it's being squandered more and more as time passes and the people who made that world drift away from Blizzard. That and the way it's presented, all of the stuff in the books should really be in the game and the books reserved for side stories like an in-universe raid clear. I really hope you enjoy FF and its world because it keeps getting deeper and deeper, with each expansion uncovering new information and all that it implies. I recommend looking at a channel called Speakers Network because they have/had a series exploring 1.0 content including content that was in the game but never got a chance to be properly released.
The problem is that, while their lore, history and settings are great, the focus changed from things like Warcraft 3, which worked to create great set pieces, new lore and ended with a very satisfying ending, for better or worse, their story writing changed focus, to not resolve things at the end and make a great contained story that could then build around the world for new adventures; instead, now WoW uses those same set pieces to leave behind open or unanswered plot points that MAY be touched in separate books, comics and whatnot to make people buy them if they want to know what happens. Also, those plot points could very well never be touched, turn non-canon or the writing team simply forget to use them since they don't even play so they forget what they did; it is all now made to set things for the next book or the next expansion instead of creating satisfying stories.
i thought this was gonna be a video about Trueblade Seeker's "FFXIV 1.0 in a nutshell" lol, but this is good too! this little story recap is quite nice, it's a shame it's not actually in the game somewhere, though you get the gist of most of it by just playing. if you're interested on the mechanical side of 1.0, i'd suggest checking out "The Fall and Rise of FFXIV" by the Speakers Network, the first 5 parts of that series covers a lot of what actually playing 1.0 was like and it's fascinating stuff.
As someone who has played since 1.0, there is SO MUCH to the lore and story that I know I missed. I'm looking forward to watching more of Pyro's videos and streams to fill in the gaps and to learn and see things that I never noticed that first time around.
What's great while watching this video is that I know a lot of your questions are answered and expanded upon by the game itself. I would HIGHLY suggest making sure to do all the 8-man raid series as you unlock them, as they provide TONS more lore, some of which even comes back to play in later content. Also, since you can rewatch cutscenes and even replay completed quests, you can always go back and pour over things in the game to put together the lore drops.
I think I understand now, the grand spell was meant to contain Dalamud and prevent the impact and they never foresaw Bahamut's reawakening, which is why the sealing spell fell short.
Talking to random NPC's in an area can also give you lore. Just tested it. The Grey Fleet in Lower Noscea, the grey refers to the the windmills ability to withstand even the grimmest storms. Also the lumber and cloth is made from decomissioned ships, so the fleet lives on in the windmills. NPC's that have a speech bubble when you mouse over them. Finding all the lore might be an adventure in itself. Been loving the dive into lore you have been doing. But some of the trivia might be a bit daunting to get I"m thinking. Love the concept of the old fleet still sailing on as windmills though.
I've literally watched the ARR opening movie over a dozen times at different points but never caught the Althyk symbol when Louisoix cast the spell to send everyone away. Amazing catch!
As a beta 1.0 player, every single time I hear answers, I still get chills. The memories of all the people I played with back then, thinking this is another RPG, just another normal story where we're gonna save the world, everything will be fine, only to see it get bigger, and bigger.. just for nael to taunt us, even when we slept in the inns, we'd awaken to nightmares of him slaughtering us all. The last ditch defense of Ul'dah with the great wall of goobue, the devs actively controlling NPCs to cheer us on and fight alongside us, the GMs buffing people who prayed at the statues to be mini-bosses themselves to help defend others, and smiting players that prayed to the monsters for the sacriledge.. Then the final battle of cartneau.. "Damnit, we've lost connection with the main host!" being called out in system messages before everything went dark, and this damn cutscene starts.. and then it was over. We couldn't save that world, but by god we're gonna save this era. :)
I love the content man. I remember sitting with word open on my second screen taking notes when I started back in HW and after 7 years of playing seeing it all come to a head this thanksgiving is going to be both insanely satisfying and sad. All questions you have now and more are touched in the story and very little side content is required to understand 99% of it. They forget no detail and spare no explanation to break down everything they present. Some side quests though does give more general lore and history to the zones so doing side quests later on further elaborates what you learn in fun ways that are little nuggets of interest.
One of the theories as to why the beast tribes were suddenly able to summon the primals again is because when the Agrius crashed into Silvertear Lake, all the aether that was trapped there flew out into the world, so it was basically super easy to summon without needing lots of crystals. Silvertear Lake is suspected to be some form of well or vault of aether where it was either locked up, or it just naturally converged there
@@2441Bing as far as I know the Crystal Tower doesn't have much to do with the silvertear lake. It's basically just a huge beacon of energy that they harvested from Bahamut, whereas Silvertear Lake's aether is like, creation of the world type levels of origins
Just seeing how naturally you jumped into taking notes to further your understanding of what was happening is a breath of fresh air. You got a sub from me. Keep up the good work.
iirc, dalamud is the cage that also powers the crystal tower to open the gate to the world of darkness... but it was too powerful that it created a massive earthquake, i forgot when...
specifically, it's a satellite powered by siphoning aether from bahamut that absorbs energy from the sun and beams it back to the crystal tower, which is a massive reservoir of energy,. Emperor Xande then tried to use to open a massive gate to the void, but the expenditure of that much energy at once caused global earthquakes that triggered the 3rd umbral calamity, the fall of the Allagan empire, and for the tower to be swallowed up by the earth.

To answer the question as to how Nael.Van Darnus came to the colclusion that he was chosen, it was because Bahamut was talking to him from inside the moon. The aether from the dead primals that we killed was flowing to Dalamud makIng Bahamut stronger. We destroyed both lunar transmitters, but that last surge of Aether from Van Darnus's death made the summoning unstoppable.

They could even call it something like "A Realm Relived..." and flesh out more of the original/base game lore for players who want to go back and experience it. Think of WoW classic servers, but with retail combat and gameplay. Now think of FFXIV 1.0 servers, but with retail combat, writing, voice acting, and gameplay :D
I'd like to recommend my man Rhigitar as he's got some short and fun with the occasional more in-depth looks at specific parts of the lore. More aimed at up to date players looking for more information due to some loose spoilers that are brought up sometimes even if without context usually though.

As for Nael deciding that he is the chosen one... don't quote me on it....but I think the answer is massive case of megalomania. Bahamut's spirit may have sensed the weakness in Nael and tempered him as a useful pawn.
I love what this guy is and what he's doing and I'm really glad he's finding lore that respects itself, where it sounds like WoW didn't. Where is this VIDEO from I want it! I even considered just watching a playthrough of FF 1.0 for this information, but I found it to bland, and I find wiki diving too nebulous to understand! I'd PAY for the video he's watching right now but I can't find it. Edit: I'm an idiot I had missed the first 5 seconds of video.
The in-gamemerch lore in this game is top tier. For one thing, it's a spectrum, not parts of a whole. What I mean by this is the merch follows the flow of the game's world building mechanism element of having a tooltip w/ flavor text for **everything**. This means that lore books, even the encyclopedias, are NOT presented linearly. Rather, when you analyze cutscenes/dialogue, make note of tooltip flavor text, read the encyclopedia front to back, and make **food from the game in real life** by owning the official cookbook -- you are playing the role of a scholar, pouring over tomes to answer questions about the realms' cultures, eras, religions, magick systems, heroes, villains, economics, politics, sciences, music, art, and... foodstuffs. You're in for a treat, a truly immersive experience for any lorehound. Have fun.
I'd mention a slight caveat about 1.0 lore: The team had tried to stay as close as possible to the lore already established by the original game, but there is some retcons.
that video was so helpfull for those that did not play 1.0. Another great more recent lorevideo is Hydaelyn's History by jesse cox. It gives a good explanation about the history of the world without spoilering anything.
In FF7, after a long, hard-fought battle with Emerald Weapon, I was almost out of MP and ether, and for some reason, I couldn't cast Knights of the Round anymore. So, I just cast Bahamut Zero, and that's what it took to kill Emerald Weapon. Ever since then, Bahamut's been my favorite.
You should also watch Speaker's Network 'The Fall and Rise of FFXIV' While mostly talking about the state of the game before release and after release of 1.0, there's also some lore within them that's interesting to know.
Basically, in 1.0 while the adventurers were killing off the Primals their aether wasn't returning to the land. It lead to an investigation of Dalamud and the determination that all the aether released was being pulled to the moon, empowering it and accelerating it's fall. Essentially, the moon was getting overcharged and the output exceeded what Nael envisioned. It also allowed Bahamut to Temper Nael, turning Nael _into_ the new transmitter. By the time he was put down, it was too late and the moon was much too close to the planet. The City States and the Circle of Knowing determined that a ritual of calling upon the 12 Gods at the point closest to the moon would potentially be able to save the land from it's impact. Unfortunately, the Garleans figured this out to and moved to secure the site. This led to the big battle you see in 2.0's cinematic. Basically, the City State's thought they had more time and were unable to secure the fields for the ritual before Bahamut broke free of his prison empowered by all the Aether he had feasted on, all the souls he had devoured. His reign of destruction was unlike anything either side was familiar with and the Circle of Knowing attempted to do the ritual without the proper set up in a last ditch attempt to save everyone. This failed and terrified the Garlean's as basically the 12 were theorized to have the power to basically Temper the world. Many prominent souls were teleported away from the site by the remaining power the Circle of Knowing had collected, some taking years to finish their teleportation. Any player character from 1.0 is one of these. However, the land which should of been barren and drained by Bahamut was instead invigorated and renewed. Aether flowed very freely, massive crystals erupting from the land or taking to the air. It was as if Eorzea had been flushed with Aether beyond what it had once contained. This is one of the main mysteries 2.0 opens up on.
I know I'm a bit late to this video, but I would also recommend watching The Speakers Network. They're a bunch of legacy players working to preserve the entire story of 1.0 as well as easter eggs and lore.

This is so heartwarming to see someone getting in to a game this much
Hes a big lore dude, so this game is perfect for him! There's tons of lore, and you don't have to go to outside materials for it!
Damn homeboy is taking notes. He really putting in the fucking work for this lore studying
Pyromancer is gonna single handedly get me into the deeper parts of FFXIV Lore with his first video.
i thought this was gonna be a video about Trueblade Seeker's "FFXIV 1.0 in a nutshell" lol, but this is good too! this little story recap is quite nice, it's a shame it's not actually in the game somewhere, though you get the gist of most of it by just playing.
if you're interested on the mechanical side of 1.0, i'd suggest checking out "The Fall and Rise of FFXIV" by the Speakers Network, the first 5 parts of that series covers a lot of what actually playing 1.0 was like and it's fascinating stuff.
Pyro, your passion for this already makes me so happy to see. Welcome aboard my dude.
Omg I’ve learned at least two new things just from watching THIS! I cannot wait for Pyro to get into it even more!!
Love the concept of the old fleet still sailing on as windmills though.
the fact the devs put in details like using proper magic symbols and such for the correct spells is awesome as well
I've literally watched the ARR opening movie over a dozen times at different points but never caught the Althyk symbol when Louisoix cast the spell to send everyone away.
Silvertear Lake is suspected to be some form of well or vault of aether where it was either locked up, or it just naturally converged there
Maybe its because its so close the the Crystal Tower?
@@2441Bing as far as I know the Crystal Tower doesn't have much to do with the silvertear lake. It's basically just a huge beacon of energy that they harvested from Bahamut, whereas Silvertear Lake's aether is like, creation of the world type levels of origins
"A thousand thousand souls prayed for Salvation"....oh shit. I finally get what means.
THIS is why I love FF14! Because they give us great story & give us answers slowly over time! Which in turn makes us have even more questions! To me FF14 is the best MMORPG of all time, PERIOD! Tome of me to level up my Ninja! Great Vid Pyro, keep up the great work! Also again "Welcome to the FF14 Family!" ;)
You might also want to check on FFXIV 1.0-1.23b Story: A Retrospective by Ethys Asher, you should be able to get a few more nuggets of knowledge from that as it also delves with more detail into specific patch content.
Ah yes, our Lore master in development
BRUH. I've watched this cinematic so many times but I never noticed the sigil of Althyk when Louisoix casts his teleportation spell
The perfect thing about this whole thing is it shows you how a REAL retcon gets done! They wrote all of this in to end and restart the game...this was absolute genius!
Midgardsormr is a lot bigger than I thought.
Yeah, someone needs to get this man through the Coils of Bahamut and then show him some of the supplemental stuff.
@@lorospact 1.0's transition to 2.0 story was fucking perfect, when that "trailer" (because it wasn't a trailer, that was the game's ending cinematic) dropped I had chills for a year. It was the best final fantasy moment for me and I am sure that not even Shadowbringers will match that, because The dalamud thing was interractive, stuff happened to the world and there are no videos on youtube that mention them all, cults, monsters getting bigger, van darnus trying to actually recruit the adventurers, Van Baelsar opposing Van Darnus, the /pray command that killed the boss monsters rampaging the main city states instantly... So much stuff
I really do hope that SE should organise events like that every few years, they havent done anything like that again.
@@vagiasthanasis heavenward had the rebuilding effort, idk about the other expansions but if there one thing SE needs to steal from blizzard and from themselves is huge pre patch events that build up. Not just story moments, but world changing stuff
The FF XIV lore master saga begins.
Thank you for this videos, more please!
I'd love to see a video on your before and after thoughts on some of the lore later down the road so we can see how close you where on some things.
"embrace all" nice nod to our characters not being locked to anything, can be any job any crafter any gatherer. can be all of them too
From what I have heard in 1.0 you could level and complete the story as a non-combat class. You would have a hired companion that fought alongside you instead. Probably evolved into the Squadrons and later the Trusts.
@@Draconic74 actually you "resolved" combat with the parley minigame you can unlock from the Manderville quests.
Honestly, when the epic music starts playing at the end of the ARR intro, I start choking up every time. 😂
It's such a powerful song
If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend picking up the lore books. They’re reprinting the lore books which were out of stock for ages and preorders are open. Highly recommend
i'm so happy to see a new lore nerd, I've been playing for about 4 years and I love delving into this lore and I wish you good luck ^-^
holy shit you taking notes on this is the most adorable nerdy shit I ever seen.
so glad you've joined us in Eorzea where the devs and lore itself respects the players, the adventurers who care about the game as much as they do. :)
There are things the players did in 1.0 that became canon to the lore. I'm sure people will point it out to you as you encounter it!
Wait wtf. Where did you find this video? I've never seen this before?!?! I'm so glad you're covering this game lol. I've been watching you for years and played WoW too, but I've always loved FFXIV and love your passion for lore. It's just so exciting to have you covering this game. "Her" is Heidelyn btw, not the planet. I know coming from WoW it might seem like this is similar to Azeroth and the planet being alive, but that's not the case in this game. Don't know if you think that or not, just wanted to mention it. The story in this game is so different from WoW. I hope you don't carry too many impressions from the WoW lens into this game.
Iirc this video came in a DVD from the collectors edition of ARR, and has been in TH-cam for a few years.
@@jariu9612 Thanks!
You can look it up as "The Waning of the Sixth Sun".
This is really cool, Pyro! This is like interactive lore learning!
Can’t wait for you to deep dive into the lore, Ethys has a new Lore mate with you. Can’t wait to woo your journey :3
I LOVE that you're taking a lore based approach to the game! When you finish ShB you're going to lose your goddamn mind! The LORE!! The long game! The cohesiveness!
**Hint** Level Summoner and Alchemist for maximum lore.
I should be more specific. ALC at least to the end of ARR and SMN at least to the end of Heavensward.
Thanks for watching this, as I never knew such a video existed! It was great going back through 1.0's story with Louisoix's narration. I love his voice they got for 2.0, one of the few ARR voices that I enjoyed.
"I'm gonna write that down too." This dude is great! 😆
something i never knew about nael van darnus i learned, scroll down if u wanna know since its not mentioned in game
The one we know as nael van darnus was not him, but his sister acting as him. Her brother the real one died in messe dup circumstance and she went mad, assumed his identity since shes clad in armor and the rest is history. Highly advise watching a video on it, pretty cool backstory.
watching you go through the story and get absorbed like this has been so interesting you are like my new favorite streamer
I think he would appreciate the videos of Speakers Network for the 1.0 lore and changes.
Nael is an example of what Sylvanas could of been.
... Possessed and crazy? Which "she" was? XD
@@SilverNightbane especially since they reworked a bit of Naels history for 2.x Coils making Nael a woman and she actually stepped in for her deceased brother.
You'd want to do Omega raid later in SB to know more about Midgardsormr.
That last cutscene is so goddam good
Always nice to watch when the gears start turning when a piece of info comes up.
looking further about it it seems like there is like a 1 hour version of this featuring the whole disc it will probably be hard to find the original but the same channel has it so yeah.
God watching you go through story, when i know what is going to happen. I can't wait for ALL of the heavy lore gasms.
Only thing I can truly recommend is, if you can't get serious detail from the story on something which yes, it's very rare but it can happen. Is do side quests, they sometimes heavily build on what you just did.
This includes the creating quests and raids. They add a lot of extra lore.
I hope someday the devs "pull a WoW classic" and remake FFXIV 1.0... but with 2.0+ combat, gameplay, and graphics.
This was really good to see you watch. Keep up the good work.
I love how it all connected and make sense from 1.0 to 2.0 ARR
Even though they remake the game
Kinda wished he put the stream comments on the screen. There’s always that 1.0 buff that drops some juicy lore points
Ah and the best part is that you have to play the game to still get the full picture of events
As a Story Hunter myself, I'm also getting confused on what's happening between 1.0 and 2.0 for example Garuda herself went into similar thing like getting her power sucked into Dalamud, instead of Ultima... Now I wanna see him getting into more Lore like that, I wanna getting closer the entire stories of us adventures and also dearest legacy players who went into this game earlier than us who know nothing of this. I wanna know more. I wanna see even clearer picture... Thank you Pyromancer for revealing this story that I try to search for so long...This is what I wanna see. :) For good memories for us 2.0 players... and our brothers and sisters 1.0(Legacy) players.
As for Nael deciding that he is the chosen one... don't quote me on it....but I think the answer is massive case of megalomania. Bahamut's spirit may have sensed the weakness in Nael and tempered him as a useful pawn.
Yes, Nael was tempered by Bahamut.
I still have the white raven earrings from Nael Van Darnus fight
Lol! I was thinking Pryo was gonna watch the other 1.0 in the Nutshell by Truthseeker.
the major thing i remember from playing 1.0 is that Dalamud slowly actually got bigger as the story went till the Climatic End
god every time i see the 2.0 intro i tear up a little
I can see the smiles of the writers of this story
Have fun.
Note - All of that being said: absolutely play the game first. Encyclopedias and cookbooks can wait.
"And make food from the game in real life"
I can't wait to make egg to become scholar
You really need to go do the Binding Coils to see what happened after the heroes were spirited away.
I'd mention a slight caveat about 1.0 lore: The team had tried to stay as close as possible to the lore already established by the original game, but there is some retcons.
I cant wait for Pyro to understand the lore of FFXIV
Did he delete all his vids. The balls on this man I'm bingeing every new vid right now.
I don't think he deleted them, but set them to private.
@@Dracobyte Still a big move.
Yeah I subscribed to his twitch and TH-cam. Takes guts to do what he did, most WoW content creators didn’t completely close the door like he did.
17:00
An item tempering him to Bahamut as far as I remember. Which was mentioned in 1.0 afair but not in this video.
(ShB spoiler)
Just like Cids dad.
that video was so helpfull for those that did not play 1.0. Another great more recent lorevideo is Hydaelyn's History by jesse cox. It gives a good explanation about the history of the world without spoilering anything.
The random grandma dabbing gif made the narration so much better
In FF7, after a long, hard-fought battle with Emerald Weapon, I was almost out of MP and ether, and for some reason, I couldn't cast Knights of the Round anymore. So, I just cast Bahamut Zero, and that's what it took to kill Emerald Weapon. Ever since then, Bahamut's been my favorite.
You should also watch Speaker's Network 'The Fall and Rise of FFXIV' While mostly talking about the state of the game before release and after release of 1.0, there's also some lore within them that's interesting to know.
Simply put I love seeing you study this as I enjoy to do so. Respect
If its not clear, Nael had the meteor project to bring it down, was the head of the 7th legion... Nael was the XIV sephiroth.
I know I'm a bit late to this video, but I would also recommend watching The Speakers Network. They're a bunch of legacy players working to preserve the entire story of 1.0 as well as easter eggs and lore.
even after all these years the answer still gets me going
And thus the adventurer scholar started his journey , alas would be a long one.
But mastery is a journey in itself. May the path give joy to the scholar.
This is the tale of Pyromancer or how we call him in our time:
Loremaster (tittle drop - epic music)
Oh my friend... not just Coils. As far as bloody Shadowbringers we are still learning new things about circumstances surrounding Project Meteor and Dalamud
Honestly you have a lot more pieces to the story once your done the msq. You don't know everything but a lot of the questions you have now have answers and there is a few more interesting questions waiting. It took me about a month to finish it and I highly recommend just smashing though it because there is a lot of good discussion topics on where endwalker is going that people would probably enjoy your take on.
Great video Pyro, thank ye champion.
Bahamut, from inside Dalamud, was able to mind control both Nael Van Darnus, and (earlier) Cid's father.
Don't spoil everything for the guy! That info isn't revealed until post Shadowbringers MSQ
Yeah, you could edit your comment with a [Massive Spoilers for Shadowbringers MSQ] text.
Nael starts calling down meteor. Meanwhile, somwhere in eorzea "Dawn of the 4th day"
