Gen 2: Oh gawd Gen 1 is the most glitchy thing ever! We need Glitch protection to ensure no Glitch leaks into our games! Gen 1: Glitch Protection? Let's bypass it with *more Glitches!*
This is definitely one of the coolest things I've seen all year. Gen I has some of the coolest glitches in all of Pokemon, and it's super neat to see what people are capable of pulling off in these games. I saw BlueBisharp hunt a Totodile earlier this year, but a lot of this was totally new to me, like the type changing. Great work!!
Oh cool. The rare sight of someone else you are subscribed to being in the comments section of another person you have subscribed to. The legend of the level 100 gauntlet is here.
I remember as a kid when I tried to trade Missing No. to the Gold edition that it showed as a Magby. I was really surprised back then, but I wasn't able to trade it. I obviously didn't figure out how to make it possible to trade it anyway so I just gave up. So I am really very suprised to see this video. Thank you very much.
Dang, I was wondering if something like that happened. Imagine showing something like this to your younger self. Someone playing a gen 1 game offers to trade you and they end up giving you a perfectly legit magby.
This takes me back to when I used to watch MissingoXpert’s Let’s Glitch Pokemon Yellow series, where at one point he went over each special stat to see what Pokemon it’d produce.
You should do "catch every pokemon in the game" with emerald, as messing around with the pomeg glitch can lead to ACE in gen 3, which in turn can be used to get pretty much any pokemon, including event mons. It's even possible to make them pass through bank if you know what you are doing! managed to get a perfect 6 iv glitched celebi to pass, which is amazing considering celebi is one of the rares mons in gen 3.
@@2810Mad He got it with perfect IVs too which would be tedious to do with legitimate means. Also it might have been more fun to mess around with the pomeg glitch.
@@2810Mad getting it in gen 3 allows it to have a ton of ribbons that you can't get in gen 7 and up. But I mainly did it as when I always wanted celebi when I played gen 3. I avenged my childhood self!
Gen3 ACE? I have seen enough posts and videos to know that's even more painful than what johnstone did here. It's possible, but you have to save your game and HOPE the value lines up
Fun fact: You can use the Mew Glitch for every pokemon still if you have battled every trainer except one long-length one. If you fly/ teleport away you can do 2 things. First you have to save, this is possible if you switch pc boxes. After that restart the game. You still need a walking animation. You can either battle the Elite Four, walk with the Museum guy at Pewter City, or the easiest of all, simply move any boulder. I prefer the one in the house in fuchsia city. After that you can go straight right to encounter a ditto. ✌🏻
Dude, this is so wild. I love learning about how the gen 1 games work since they're so delightfully broken, and this has to be one of my new favorite applications of that. Serious kudos to you for tracking all this information down and making it work
The effect seen at 13:55 can be prevented by completing your Pokédex first. To be more specific, each glitch Pokémon has a single normal Pokémon whose Pokédex entry controls that of the glitch Pokémon; for example, MissingNo will show its Pokédex entry if you haven’t seen Cubone.
I tried this and it worked. I completed the pokedex in Pokemon Blue and then proceded to catch Cyndaquills MissingNo, I believe the Index number is 194 and the game did not crash.
Hey John! Back in the day it was impressive if someone was able to get Mew. But now you're able to get every 2nd gen pokemon is just incredible! Mad respect bro :)
So for dual type Pokemon, something that isn't apparent in the code, all monotype Pokemon are actually just the same type twice, that way, all Pokemon have the same data size for each index. Usually a Pokemon's data is (at least for gen 1) 28 bytes, so all Pokemon have that exact amount for its data structure and thus, each Pokemon has a Type 1 and Type 2 and the game is programmed to make it so if a Pokemon's first and second typing are the same . So a pure Grass type is 16 16(hex) for example. The only exceptions are the glitch typings because I guess they might have planned to have more typings and the game is set to show all of the ones that aren't Bird type as Normal, so it is technically possible to have a Pokemon that is Normal/Normal (I think, I've never tried to make a Pokemon be a glitched type called "Normal") but it wouldn't actually be Normal/Normal it would be a dual type where the second type is a "Normal" type with no weakness/resistances. (So it would effectively still be a normal type) the way the game handles this anyways, if you go above the highest index you'll have some issues as a type CAN be between 00 and FF and nothing above 1A (Dragon) is "properly" coded in, in other words, 00-1A are all "valid" typings which won't display any glitch text, and anything above 1A could result in various issues, and since a lot of Pokemon that aren't supposed to be encountered pull data from all over the place because the game is trying to interpret whatever data is present as a Pokemon, it can lead to all sorts of wacky stuff. (Assuming you didn't cover this in the video) I'd imagine you'd be able to make Croconaw not be Water/Fighting by making it type 15 15 (or pure water) rather than 15 01. (Thanks Bulbapedia for having the information available for my reference) Okay you did address it. This is why you watch the videos before you comment, kids.
I found this channel before I found stream John, but when I discovered his second channel I legit didn't realise it was the same guy. Great video as always!
This is the most insane Gen 1 glitch video I've ever seen. Even understanding a good chunk of how to preform those already I'm impressed by just how far you can go.
When I was younger I actually thought of the secondary same typing for pokemon ( fire/fire) like something that was implemented and it made sense to me, so I thought pokemon with one type were that type twice. Cool video btw I love gen1 glitches
If the Special stat is 200 or higher, instead of a glitch Pokémon that can be converted to a real Pokémon in a Generation II game, it actually brings up a glitch trainer.
18 minutes of video may take around 18 days of hard work with glitched game, or even longer. That's crazy. Also I really appreciate what you doing for Pokemon community John. That's great!
There’s a bypass for certain glitch mons that have softlocking dex entries: you can bypass the new entry screen by already having a specific Pokémon registered in the dex. For example with “h poke” (the glitch with the endless cry on the Pokédex screen), the softlocking screen can be bypassed if you already have Gengar registered in the Dex beforehand. This might save a little time by not having to use to 8F method.
It's not fun. Believe me, it's not fun. Grinding out the same movies over and over for literally almost a full twenty-four hours was **not** worth the effort.
I've been looking for this video for like 3 years, I avoided this channel when searching because I thought I watched all the Pkmn videos and was like "nah, he didn't do the video". I can't believe you actually were the one I was looking for all along. Fun video by the way.
I never did the mew glitch with the trainer in Cerulean, I always did it with the Gambler just below the Underground Tunnel west of Lavender Town, because that's the one I knew. And I didn't Teleport, I used Fly. However, I did to that glitch to get a Solo 100% complete Pokedex in Yellow, catching any version exclusives and trade evo's with it, by just experimenting and trying different trainer fights.
Always cool to see more mainstream awareness for the near-endless sandbox of fun that is Gen 1 Pokemon and its glitches. Framing the glitch pokemon as the mons that occupy their index numbers in gen 2 is an interesting twist, and they're plenty interesting as their glitchy selves in gen 1 already. For example, the glitch "94" (Wobbuffet if transferred) learns over 120 moves between levels 1 and 255, it's back sprite depends on what pokemon the enemy has sent out, and its cry is a fun tune.
Fun fact you can use 8f on virtual console to make shiny mews that pass all the bank and home checks. All of it is easier in gen 2 since coin case ace can be done earlier and easier, but its still super interesting. Sick vid dude you're actually insane for going through all that lmao
I'm happy to see a video talk about this glitch that I'm so fond of, that basically got me into gaming to begin with hahah in my pokemon yellow, I caught all 151 pokemon using the wild stat glitch. To go one step further, I leveled up my pokemon to a certain point to get a specific special stat for my pokemon I'm using for the glitch. The reason I went about using my pokemon to trigger the glitch wild encounter, I specifically ran into Ditto on the route shown in the video where he was encountered the Bellsprout in the video! Running into Ditto allowed it to transform into my pokemon with that certain special stat, once you make the Ditto faint, the triggered encounter will be whatever pokemon you set to find! Sorry for typing an essay lmao
2 things that this video left me with: - "How much patience does this man have?" - "What kind of magic is at work here? How does a Gen I game even start without a meltdown?"
Because shininess in gen 2 is based on DV's of a pokemon. thus you can catch a pokemon in gen 1 with the right DV's it will become shiny when you trade it to gen 2. this is how People shiny hunt the Legendary birds in gen 1/2? I presume that would work with these glitch pokemon, so like if there DV's happen to be the right DV's then it's shiny? but that's still the 1 in 8092 odds? I wonder if you could use Ace to change the DV's of a pokemon? thus turning a pokemon shiny?
@@EBroxas72 Actually, you can! It's possible through Ditto and a Shiny from Gen 2 that can learn Mimic (such as the red Gyarados from Lake of Rage). Trade the Gyarados to Gen 1 and teach it Mimic. Encounter a Ditto and use Mimic to learn Transform. Have the Ditto Transform into Gyarados, then use the Mimic'ed Transform for it to Transform again. This will force the Ditto to take on the Gyarados' DVs. If you trade the Ditto to Gen 2, it WILL be Shiny! You can actually take this a step further, too. Using the Pokémon Merge glitch (learn more about it here: m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_merge_glitch). To put it in layman's terms, having an 'M (FF) in Red/Blue or Q in Yellow allows you to combine two Pokémon together. The 'donor' will pass along its typing, stats, movepool, experience growth, evolution methods, and most importantly, *its DVs* to the 'recipient'. This allows you to give any Pokémon a set of DVs that will ensure Shinyness. To trade it to Gen 2, you need to 'stabilize' the hybrid (simply deposit it to the Daycare, transfer it to Stadium 2, or evolve it). It's a convoluted process, but it *is* possible!
The Mew glitch actually screwed up my old Blue version; I don't recommend it. Even after wiping the save data and starting a new game, it would do exactly what you showed with the >190 pokemon as soon as I opened the menu. Just endless random sound effects and crash. Really cool video, though. I wasn't expecting anything that produced a legitimate Gen 2 pokemon!
I know it's an old video and probably no-one is going to see this but I just wanted to say that you can definitely go smaller than a byte! Half of a byte is called a nibble, which is in turn made up of 4 bits. A bit is just a 1 or a 0, so that is the smallest it goes. P.S. love your videos
Now, you have to think: what would happen if you transferred one of those, say the Totodile, into Pokémon bank, and then into home. What would the original region say?
This is very cool, and reveals a little about how much Gen 2 is actually just the Gen 1 engine with a lot of fixes. I was hoping you'd reveal what pokémon the famous Bird-type MissingNo would turn up as in Gen 2, though. Would Bird-type turn into Dark-type?
This was extremely fascinating! I still don’t quite understand the coding and stuff but it’s so wild to think how this works and how some parts of code effect other parts of code so crazily. And I thought the original red and blue were a coding glitchy mess before but wow! Thank you so much for figuring this all out and consolidating the info, now I have even more strange facts to share with people lol…
Oh gosh this brings back so many memories when i was like 9 or ten i ask my parents for all the old pokemon gmaes and got them for Christmas. Then o found a youtuber which i think was call shiny sandslash or something and watched his glitch lets play of yellow version amd i got so many glitch mons. I thought and still thinks it like the coolest thing ever!
This was a cool video. Interesting concept and it is possible, though tedious. RIP Glitch City Laboratories. Sounds kinda nerdy but I went there all the time for reading since I was a kid. :(
I know exactly how this is gonna go from the title alone, and I'm super excited to watch this! I always *knew* johto mons were ""obtainable"" but I never thought about catching em all this way! Edit: Using 8F to fix a Glitch Mon's type?? I WISH I was this creative back when I used to mess around with it! Edit Edit: Im curious: how did you manage to transfer Pokemon with types that didn't exist yet, like Umbreon?
Even better: with ACE you can do just about anything you want. Want a legit event Mew? Just change all its stats, along with moves, trainer ID and OT to that of a legit one, and I believe Bank accepts it no problem.
From past experience, the 3DS versions of RBY, they are much less stable for 8F glitches, a lot of things that don't corrupt the save on cart DO corrupt on Virtual console, emulation differences SUCK. Also, there IS a six Pokemon bootstrap to use with 8F, which makes things a lot less tedious.
Me before the video starts: "Nah, impossible, that's crazy."
Me after the video ends: "Nah, impossible, that's crazy."
Me, after the video ends: "That's bullshit, but I believe it."

@@EBroxas72 If you can turn Pokémon into Pong with A.C.E, you can definitely change their DVs
Seeing the title I was like “Johns finally lost it”
Okay this is really REALLY cool John, I love this stuff! I'll be checking out all the description links
johnstone and johnstonelive are completly different persons.
I'm amazed at how different johnstone is from stream johntent john. Yet both are amazing entertainers. Love it.
Ah yes I remember that typhlosion is 80'3" and weighs 6100lbs
That was something else, but amazing work, I had no idea something like this was possible.
I love your videos! You’re one of my favorite Pokémon TH-camrs. Always so much quality in your vids 👏
11:48 "Bayleef is actually a grass type." Out of context worth a "duh". Given the context, it is quite impressive and cool. Great video. :)
I read the title, scrolled down further, and scrolled back after a second, realizing what the title actually said. Total legend
wow, that's actually insane, didn't know they already had these Pokémon!
Interesting video. Love all the content you put out John!
Big fan of ACE in gen 1-3. This is one of the coolest uses I've seen!
13:12 Holy shit... It worked?! This is possibly the most satisfying YT payoff I've watched in a looong time.
Instructions unclear, caught sonic instead.
This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in the Pokémon community
Now, you have to think: what would happen if you transferred one of those, say the Totodile, into Pokémon bank, and then into home. What would the original region say?
@Exordi
I've tried it with Noctowl and Ariados, it just defaults to Johto. OT and Trainer ID don't change, though.
Good video John, really liked it.
Can't wait for your streams and you're next vid.
That... is insanity. Well done!
ngl, this has to be one of the most interesting pokemon videos ive ever seen
Wow, this was such a good video and you can tell how much effort went into it. Thank you for doing it!
Truly an interesting video
Nice work!
Johnstone answering the questions I never asked. Thanks!
i understood none of the jargon you used to explain this process but i’m impressed nonetheless
This is really mindblowing.
this video just blew my mind and i love it
Please never stop making these videos
John is getting into 8F shenanigans.
Party time.
This was a cool video. Interesting concept and it is possible, though tedious.
RIP Glitch City Laboratories. Sounds kinda nerdy but I went there all the time for reading since I was a kid. :(
New Jrose11 and Johnstone on the same day :D Happy 90s kid here :D
I have seen people break Gen1 but this is a whole new level
The boy j stone killin it as always
