  • In this video, I give a step-by-step tutorial on how to replace the fuel filter in a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter. Doing this job yourself will save you at least $250. The only tools that you need are a flathead screwdriver, 8mm socket wrench, and new fuel filter. You should replace your fuel filter every 20,000 miles.

    There is no need to start the engine and prime the filter before, turn on the ignition but do not start the engine.
    The fuel pump will then fill the filter so that you can start normally!
    A little know and it saves a lot of mess with diesel ;-)
    Furthermore a very clear and a great educational video!

    No need to fill the filter with Diesel!
    To prime the filter you just turn the key to ignition without starting 20-30 seconds and let the fuel pump fill the filter then start, this way you don't have to run the starter for too long when you turn to start.
    Also it's a good time to inspect the Air filter if you haven't done that recently.
    A piece of advice: always fill up your diesel tank when at 1/3

    I have had my 2018 RV Sprinter for 18 months, last week on the way home from a trip it died 5 times on the highway, no idea what was going on. It did restart but it had no power. We were lucky and found a MB dealer 20 miles away. We spent the night and they were able to fix the problem. Clog fuel filter, while waiting for it to be replace, I found your video. 8 hours waiting for it to be fix, $600+ later we were back on the road. I have order a spare fuel filter which I will carry with me on all future trips. Thank you for creating this video. you gave me the confidence of doing this job myself. My symptom, driving 70 MPH on the highway, I heard a sound, lost performance, check engine light came on(code P0087), when I pulled to the side of the road, the engine shut off on its own. Picked up some bad diesel, the problem did not show up until the tank was less than 1/4. Again, while it did restart, it happen 4 more times. If this happens again, I will find a parking lot, wait an hour for the engine to cool off, change the fuel filter and back on the road 20 mins later. P.S. I have learn to be more selective on where I get my diesel while on the road but if it happens again, your video will sane me. Thank you!.

    Good quality - but. Should replace (or at least inspect) turbo inlet ring. Should lubricate it with silicon spray. The filter is wrong one. That model is for car or 4 cylinder. Use the/15. Use right tools for removing Clik-r clamps or throw away. Don't recommend reusing Clik-r clamps.

    • @leonardcasella9848
      @leonardcasella9848 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By the way, really should look at WIS instructions before performing maintenance. I didn't see a torque wrench used. Also, need to fill filter before attempting start. Hard on injectors the way you did it. Turn on key for 30 seconds, off, then repeat 2 more times. Fuel filter filled.

    • @goodbuilds3609
      @goodbuilds3609  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leonardcasella9848 the turbo ring was inspected and I comment during the video that you want to make sure there is no debris before replacing it. The fuel filter is compatible with certain Mercedes sprinter models, including this one. The fuel filter was filled prior to installation - I stated that in the video and made a caption.

    Ok Fair warning here. I have 6 of these vans for my company and have changed these myself a couple times but wont do it anymore. Heres why you can see at 3:36 in the video there is a braded line into what looks like a T. if you are not extremely careful that T can snap. to replace it is a major job each of those lines has to be completely replaced to each injector. secondly I had a shop do one and it ended up with a blown engine. They didn't re install one of the lines going into the fuel filter correctly causing diesel fuel to flood out every where. The same shop also didn't remove the air tube going into the turbo they pushed it aside causing it to crack.... Diesel fuel flooding into the turbo caused a runaway. Were still fighting with the shop to fork up the $$$ for shotty work. To swap out the motor were looking at $18k

    A few more comments. The "star" head bolts are E-Torx, suggest using correct sockets for them. Your video says 08-18 but 08 through early 12 have very different filters and removal can be different.

  • @michaelscarfi3196
    @michaelscarfi3196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video except the most important thing you didn’t mention is to identify the return fuel line T directly in front of the filter which is seen on this video. The slightest pressure from your hand or a tool while working on the filter will snap that T. A part that can not be purchased alone but comes with the return line for the whole engine. 200$. And requires about 4 hours to replace the line. Ask me how I know this 🙄. It’s unfortunately a common mistake for a lot of people.

    Based on your comment that once starting the van it will fill the fuel filter, do you need to attempt to fill with diesel before installing the new one? What's the down-side to not doing so? seems like the messiest step.

    • @goodbuilds3609
      @goodbuilds3609  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should try to get as much diesel into the filter as possible before installing it. The downside to not filling it is that you’re going to have to basically dry start your van until the fuel filter is filled and fuel can start moving throughout the engine. It’s pretty hard on the engine, but not the end of the world if you skip that step

    • @goodbuilds3609
      @goodbuilds3609  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the fuel line clamps are a bit difficult to take off. Almost need a needle nose pliers to get them undone. Screw clamps are a great alternative

    • @billwhite4093
      @billwhite4093 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@goodbuilds3609 Still the best video for this procedure i can find anywhere. I just finished changing the filter and I noticed the filter housing has an allen bolt in the back that can be loosened allowing the filter to be pulled out without removing the 3 bracket screws. That was similar to the 2004 sprinter I once had. Now that im finished I'm questioning my screw clamps as the oem ones seem less likely to gouge the rubber hoses.

    • @SwEdd1e
      @SwEdd1e ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goodbuilds3609 The first hose you removed from the old filter. I'm curious how significant it is and what its for. It appears there are 2 types of filters for my 2011 sprinter. One with that hose and one without. Thanks again.

    • @SwEdd1e
      @SwEdd1e ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goodbuilds3609 after a bit of research it appears I'm referring to the WIF (water in filter) line. My U clip must have snapped and mine is completely disconnected. I'm a new sprinter owner so I'm learning this on the fly. I wonder how bad it is that mine has been disconnected probably since before IU owned it. (bought 6 months ago). Dealership told me I had a fuel filter leak and that it needed to be replaced which is why I'm looking to replace it. I'm wondering if its only leaking because the WIF hose is disconnected and the filter is fine otherwise?
