Thanks for the great video. I installed a new stereo with backup camera last night on my 2000 F250 and your video was a big help. when I pulled the video cable up into the cab I pulled another wire at the same time and used that as my reverse trigger wire off of the reverse light positive to save getting into the fuse box - worked great and saved a step since I had to pull that light anyway for the power to the camera. I also pulled the dash to install the USB port in the dash in a blank spot. whole install was smooth and looks good. thanks for the great video!
Thanks for covering all aspects, not just the most high level parts. I was stuck on how to connect it so that it would turn on when in reverse, and also the best way to run the wire down the length of the truck. You covered both ! Thanks!
Such an awesome video! I’ve wanted to put a backup cam on my f250 since my son likes to play outside a lot and I’m always worried when I’m parking in the driveway. Thank you for this!
A heads up on backup camera install. If your camera comes with a wire (probably red) in the RCA Camera Cable. You tie that to the back trigger in the head unit. This avoids splicing into the fuse box.
One thing I've been looking for and haven't found is that you can tie the camera power into a switched 12v at the radio so the camera comes on when you power the vehicle and tie the purple wire in just as you saw here. This will give you the ability to also turn on the camera while driving or just without engaging reverse. Thanks for identifying the reverse switch wire in the dash. I tied my camera in at the light and tied that signal wire that come with the length of the RCA to reverse signal at the radio and it works fine when in reverse but I want to now change the wiring to allow the camera to be used when not in reverse. That's a great feature about these Pioneer systems along with a second camera option.
Great tutorial video. I’m trying to find something negative to say about it and I’ve got nothing. Thanks for this masterpiece of an instructional video
Tap into that reverse wire with a hot wire, then switch it to the dash....it’s great for when you wanna see what’s going on behind you. Especially when towing
Thank you for this. For some reason it wouldn’t work until I did this. Now to clean up the wiring that I had apart 20 times trying to figure out why it wouldn’t trigger
Why does my yellow cord have a small red wire coming out of it as well at both ends of the the yellow rca? And where do I hook that up to? Aside from that everything else was up what I have so thank you very much either way.
Great video, but I have a question.....The aftermarket radio I bought and installed in my truck, is almost exactly the same as the one you installed in your preceeding video. The manufacturer quite pointedly says that the only way to get the radio out, post installation, is to remove the entire dash! You did not say if that is how you got your radio out, to do the backup camera install. So, exactly how did you get the radio out???? Or did you have some trick?
Ya, I cut the tabs down so it doesn't stay in. It's not a heavy one, so I'm hoping it will push out after. Otherwise, it's cheap to replace the adapter, as long as you can get it out.
I have a 2002 f250 with the same radio and I have a backup camera, it recently quit working but the radio goes to the camera screen in reverse but it's black. Any thoughts?
Hello, I just got a Ford F350 2002. What is the ( P ) button for? I heard it's for reverse sensor but when I put it in reverse and back up close to my garage door I do t hear any noises.
Great video! I am Installing a Kenwood DNR1007XR in my 2005 F250. Do you know where I can find a tap for the VSS connection for Kenwood S-SENS pink wire. Thanks Mike
Hey Mike, you can probably get away not hooking it up if you do a software update for your Kenwood. www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmware/2020/2020f/eng.html
How you pull that radio out? I have an after market clarion nx602. I was not the original owner, and it looks as though the previous owner had a backup camera. I just need to take the radio out and identify everything to be replaced
The entire dash bezel will most likely need to be pulled out. It is a hassle, but really the only way unless you can relieve the clips around the radio to pop free.
On a 2001 F250 - my fuse panel is a brick about 5" W X 4" D X 7"L. I can not get it to turn or slide out. How do I connect to the reverse wire? Is there another location that I can connect to, close to here? Is the wire the same color? Is it the only black/pink wire going into fuse panel?
Problem I'm having is how to pop my fuse box out like you did in the video. I removed the 4 screws holding it in place but can't seem to get the box over the metal rail. This is a 2000 F250 Super Duty. Thanks for you help.
It took a lot of finesse, but keep working at it. Essentially you just need to connect into that black / pink wire in that harness. if you can trace that wire to a better, more accessible location, that may be easier.
Thanks for your response. I guess I'll try option 2. But it's just too tight back there to even properly identify the black/pink wire. Thanks though. I'll keeping trying. That's the last part of this puzzle for me.
I am watching these videos and I have a question. Why is no one including a relay in the setup so that the License plate light turns off when the backup camera turns on? With the camera directly under that light how can you see anything at all when the lights are on?
Where can I tap in besides the tail light for power? I've got everything else ran, but they didn't give very much wire for power besides under the dash
I followed these instructions, but when I put truck in reverse, I get a scrolling video screen. Any idea? Bad connection somewhere? All t-tapped besides wire nut for reverse signal in dash.
Thank you for your awesome videos. Can the camera power wire be connected to the same trigger wire connection under the dash? The power/video harness for my camera is short and behind the head unit in the dash so it would be easy to connect it to the trigger wire. Would the voltage be lower than what is needed to power the camera than if it had been connected to the reverse light wire in back of the truck? Thanks.
I’m wanting to wire my camera so I can see my trailer when I put it in reverse and also when I’m driving down the road how do I wire it 2001 F150 Supercrew 5.4
It can be tricky, but a putty knife on the sides can help relieve the clips to remove the aftermarket radio, or alternatively, pulling the entire dash bezel off.
How about two cameras I have a pick up truck I had the normal reverse one by the license plate want to mount one above so I could see the bed of the truck and pad the bumper also like to mount one in front
my screen turned white and that is all i see now radio plays cd works but cant do any adjustments total white out also backup camera shows all white screen please advise
The one under the dash is to let the radio know that your are in reverse and to switch over to the rear camera mode. Tapping into the taillight is to power up the actual camera mounted on the license plate. I hope that makes sense now.
Question, once this double din with this metra kit is installed, how do you remove it? I have a pioneer with same install kit. I installed it today but cannot seem to get it to go back to where it’s flush. Now, I can’t pull it out either to adjust things behind to get a flush fit. Thank you.
I have the pioneer touch screen in order for my camera to be viewed I have to select it from the menu. I have it wired to the tail light not to the connector you showed. The vehicle is a Toyota. Can you help me? Thanks
Is this the same set up for an 1993 f350 manual? And can I put 2 cameras in so when I back up to a goose neck I can see the ball and still have one on the license plate?
No, it would be a different install for a 1993 as the dash is different. Check with sonic exectonix install guide for help further. You can add two cameras, but your primary would be on the license plate. The other can connect into the AV input on the radio and can just by cycled over when you are ready to go in reverse.
Yeah that'll work. I would make sure that it is hooked up to Accessory power instead of directly to the battery. That way when the vehicle is off the camera will be off.
I have a 1999 f-350 so I have the black pink wire but when you connect it to the double din unit it the screen goes blank but when their connected and shift to reverse the camera comes on but when shifted out of reverse the radio goes blank I have no idea what to do please help
It seems that the black and pink cable behind the fuse box is always hot on a 1999 F350. I am in the process of finding out which is the actual wire for the purposes of what we need. I am considering trying to find the wire past the reverse switch and running it from there.
Awesome tutorial! I will be installing a backup camera/stereo on my sisters 2000 F150 xlt. DO you know if the fusebox for the reverse trigger wire is the same and also the pink and black wire?
You would have to install a wireless camera capable of the additional distance with the trailer. You can plug that input from the camera into a radio that has an AV input so you can switch between sources.
Great video and tutorial I installed mine with no problems at all I only have a question, when reversing it's supposed to make a warning sound or that feature it's not available only video?any response will be appreciated thanks in advance 👍
Just in reverse. If you want that functionality to turn on all the time, you will need to wire the power to the camera to an accessory source to turn on when the key is on, not just in reverse.
Instead of connecting the camera's power cable into the reverse light, connect it to a power only on when the key is on because Most radio's today allow you to manually switch over to the camera when not in reverse.
Thanks for the video. Do you know if this should be the same for a 2004 diesel excursion? I wired my reverse trigger to the black/pink wire just as shown in the video, but it's not giving a signal to the radio. The camera works fine when I switch it directly on the unit (pioneer nex 4400). I am thinking of wiring to the black and pink wire in the passenger kick panel, to see if that works (some forums suggest it might), but I might just run a wire to the reverse light harness to keep from doing trial and error t-taps all along the truck. Any advice?
Provo Beast Audio Installation I ended up accessing the wire in the passenger kick panel. Before I tapped it, I just pushed the trigger wire end into the harness connector next to the black/pink wire and put it in reverse. Worked well. Thanks again for making this video and for replying to my comment question.
@@ProvoBeastAudio So you are testing on the ohm setting and not voltage? I was expecting to test for positive voltage. There's a wire about 2/3 right of the fuse panel inside the area, and it also has a black/pink wire that people recommended.
IF it has already been replaced with an aftermarket radio, you have to remove the entire dash bezel around the radio / steering column to remove the radio.
Question i connect de black and pick cable to the camera radio wire but when i connected is no signal on my radio but the camera is working ...if i disconnect the cable my radio work again ..what i have to do
If you have wired it correctly, it may be the settings on your radio. Be sure to enable the back up camera mode and that (if equipped) you set the polarity to battery / Positive.
Same principle, you will need to locate the wire that powers the rear lights, and in Ford's, they are typically Black and pink. This wire you will need to tap into.
So I followed your instructions but I'm still not getting any video from the camera to my radio. I got everything connected it's got power turns on when I go into reverse but no video
Provo Beast Audio Installation I tried a different rca and still no picture and the picture adjustment options are still grated out so I tapped into the taillights with a different connector and no change. Could it just be that the camera its self is no good ?
That or the radio isn't working. I would start removing variables, calves, connections, etc. See if you can find another RCA input you can test on your reverse camera input to see if the camera is bad.
The other end went into the reverse wire input on the radio, which triggers the radio to cycle over to the reverse camera when the truck is in reverse.
Hi, I have checked out the install kit you used (95-5819) and everyone including Metra say's if you want to pull the head unit back out you have to take apart the dash. So my question is, if you did not have to pull the dash to install back up camera, how did you do it? Cheers Gerry
Magic of editing, i installed the radio at the same time as the backup camera, but you are right, you will have to pull the dash bezel out if you later install anything else.
If you are, i then suggest running a wire along with you video wire to the back of the truck and tap into the power at the reverse light and use that as your trigger.
Most individuals either use a puddy knife to release the tabs of the new dash kit to pull the radio out, or you can move the entire dash bezel to remove the radio.
I have a 2007 F-150 and I used pin 6 on the factory stereo harness. Easy...it's right behind the stereo. I put my multimeter on it and it supplies about 13 VDC when the truck is in reverse and 0 VDC everywhere else. It is a dark green wire with yellow stripe. (Make sure that you do not use the light green/yellow). You can also find this wire in the passenger side kick panel if you want to tap in there. NOTE: I have read that the black/pink wire works also in the driver's side kick panel, but I did not test it out.
Ok so the black and pink wire not sure what it was putting out made my display go out .like literally nothing on the screen had lights and sound only no control or display. So I switched it to the reverse lights seems to work perfect tapped into the reverse at the taillight. Now the green wire is suppose to go to parking brake is the only one I have not connected. Who uses a parking brake ? I want bypass so I can play my audio DVDs
@@Nolatech001, just bypass the parking brake: hook-up that wire to the black wire (ground). That is just a safety feature so that you don't watch TV while driving.
I think my camera is defective. I'm gonna put my tester on it and check my rca cable and power to the camera. I hooked it all up as shown and everything else seems to work great you get way better sound with this radio way more power then the old one.🤔
Unfortunately not, like you said, grab a multi-meter or test light and ensure the camera is getting power when in reverse. Be sure nothing has come loose or unplugged. Try to remove variables whether is it he radio vs. the camera.
There are clips all around the panel, some models have a few screws as well. Release those clips and the panel will move enough to access the wire needed.
I followed this video to a T and a week later when I go into reverse I don't get a video signal anymore. Just a black screen. It did rain and I had the RCAs (yellow and red) taped up with electrical tape. So I did some testing and saw that the camera is still getting power. I then unplugged the yellow RCA and back in and it work a couple times then went back to black screen. Now I can't get it to work anymore. You think this is something with my wiring, the rain, the reverse cam or a faulty headunit?
Now I am getting power to the camera as the backup LEDs on the camera come on. So that shows my power/ground are good, yes? If there was a short in the power/ground would that cause the "no video signal" or is that directly with the video cable? Though it may sound like a short. Would the rain have caused that? I did notice it a little wet inside the yellow RCA cable when I removed the electrical tape. Thing is I was able to get video back after playing with it, but after I let it sit overnight I come back and get the no video signal. I will try a new RCA cable of higher quality and see if that works. Thanks for the quick update.
Well yes if the camera is shutting off, yes it wouldn't show a video signal. But if it is getting power, it may be the video cable. But once you remove the variable of the power source, you can try different RCA cables.
I also would like to add I did not use the signal wire attached to both ends of the RCA cable. Instead I added a wire to the reverse wire on fuse panel to the reverse signal wire on head unit. This allowed me to switch to reverse cam when going into reverse. I assume there are a few ways to hook up a reverse cam and I chose the most used one?
I think that you could have done a better job of the radio install now the dash just looks hacked. you should have used a Dremel to give it a clean and smooth finish.
Parts linked in the description!

IF it has already been replaced with an aftermarket radio, you have to remove the entire dash bezel around the radio / steering column to remove the radio.
I did all that but when I put in reverse camera screen shows up but no pic. When I manually put it on it works. Any ideas?
Sounds like an issue with the power to the camera. How do you have it wired?
Question i connect de black and pick cable to the camera radio wire but when i connected is no signal on my radio but the camera is working ...if i disconnect the cable my radio work again ..what i have to do
If you have wired it correctly, it may be the settings on your radio. Be sure to enable the back up camera mode and that (if equipped) you set the polarity to battery / Positive.
How would you wire the reverse trigger on a manual transmission?
Same principle, you will need to locate the wire that powers the rear lights, and in Ford's, they are typically Black and pink. This wire you will need to tap into.
How do
You remove the aftermarket stereo? Heard it can't be uninstalled without pulling dash first
You will have to pull off the entire dash bezel and pop the radio out from behind, kind of a pain.
I'm having an issue where my reverse lights are always on
Sounds like a major wiring issue to me
If the camera came with the yellow video cable could you just hook it up to the back of the streo
Yes, but the stereo also needs to know when you are in reverse to switch over to the camera.
So i just have to connect the pink and black wire in the fuse box to the purple wire in the stereo harness ?
You got it!
Thanks man lots of great help love the vids
How you remove the stereo!
Jonathan Boockmeyer I’ve got a double din with the same dash kit and was wondering the same thing?
Same!
What type of stereo did you use to fit the space in the dash after removing the stock unit
Here you go: th-cam.com/video/2nTx-kQIxNY/w-d-xo.html
What wire did you use that ran to the t-Tap to the radio? Any suggestions on amazon?
We used an 18 gauge wire, no suggestions really, but about 10' would be plenty. Most auto parts stores carry wire as well.
So I followed your instructions but I'm still not getting any video from the camera to my radio. I got everything connected it's got power turns on when I go into reverse but no video
So either the camera isn't getting power or the RCA video cable is bad.
Ever fix this?
Where did you plug the yellow video cable into the radio , Video IN?
No, the Brown RCA input is the CAM input for a reverse camera.
I have a 02 Ford Escape and been looking for a backup camera. Where did you get this at? I also have a pioneer radio too that I have to install.
Amazon. Just search backup camera.
When you tapped into the reverse gear trigger wire, where did you connect the other end? I didn't get that part
The other end went into the reverse wire input on the radio, which triggers the radio to cycle over to the reverse camera when the truck is in reverse.
Thank you!!!
How long of a rca cord is needed for this job?
Between 20 and 25 feet
Where is ur shop sir?
Utah!
Gerry Vass of
Is it the same wiring on a 2005 f-250?
The concept, yes. but body styles are a bit different. so follow our techniques for your install.
Im having trouble finding the recerse trigger wire
If you are, i then suggest running a wire along with you video wire to the back of the truck and tap into the power at the reverse light and use that as your trigger.
My dude!!! Thanks!
how did you get it back out
Most individuals either use a puddy knife to release the tabs of the new dash kit to pull the radio out, or you can move the entire dash bezel to remove the radio.
Help no black and pink on my 2007
I have a 2007 F-150 and I used pin 6 on the factory stereo harness.
@@dcutl great will do.
I think my camera is defective. I'm gonna put my tester on it and check my rca cable and power to the camera. I hooked it all up as shown and everything else seems to work great you get way better sound with this radio way more power then the old one.🤔
is there a light or anything that comes on for the camera when it's in reverse so I can see if it is working at all?
Unfortunately not, like you said, grab a multi-meter or test light and ensure the camera is getting power when in reverse. Be sure nothing has come loose or unplugged. Try to remove variables whether is it he radio vs. the camera.
How’d you get the fuse panel it?
There are clips all around the panel, some models have a few screws as well. Release those clips and the panel will move enough to access the wire needed.
Provo Beast Audio Installation I used that wire and it doesn’t switch over av source camera and reverse gear input is on battery
Sounds like you may have gotten the wrong wire. I would use a multi meter or test light to make sure you find the right wire.
Provo Beast Audio Installation can I just use any way that only powers when in reverse?
Essentially, yes. Any wire that is hot when the truck is in reverse.
Porque no lo explican en español
Where do you live? Id like you to come do this to my 1999 ford ranger xlt haha
We are in Utah
I followed this video to a T and a week later when I go into reverse I don't get a video signal anymore. Just a black screen. It did rain and I had the RCAs (yellow and red) taped up with electrical tape. So I did some testing and saw that the camera is still getting power. I then unplugged the yellow RCA and back in and it work a couple times then went back to black screen. Now I can't get it to work anymore. You think this is something with my wiring, the rain, the reverse cam or a faulty headunit?
Sounds like a short in the video rca wire. I would get another RCA cable and try testing it again.
Went ahead and ordered a better built video composite rca cable. Hopefully this works. I will then use shrink wrap to seal the connectors.
Could you do this on a bronco
Yep, similar process.
I think that you could have done a better job of the radio install now the dash just looks hacked. you should have used a Dremel to give it a clean and smooth finish.
This video was from years ago. You should watch our new content
Great video! Thank you!
