LOVE the videos but you said water doesn't travel up. Please tell my wind that lol. I had a ridge cap taking in water and COULD NOT figure out how... so I waited and waited for a good storm and found the facing wind pushing the water back up and in the ridge cap, running down the inside truss and dripping off at the base. anyways KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

Both work, I personally prefer ice and water as I feel mastic will eventually dry and crack

Does these design have slope degrees for that vent? I see you working is 45 degree. What about 15 degree vent?

We use pitch factors, shingles are designed for roofs 2/12 and steeper. Dormer vents can also be used for 2/12 or greater.

Nice production. I am interested in the Chimney in the picture. I want to put that on my roof and have that whole thing open too the attic. It just needs some 1/4 or 18 screen and some kind of protection to keep the rain out. While you are driving down the road look at the size of those CHIMNEYS, 2 by 3 feet and sticking up 4 feet. Go with a 1/8” screen if not smaller. Depending on where you are.

I bought two Vulcan retrofit dormer vents. They prevent embers from getting into the attic. From the pictures on one site, looks like we can use screws. Can you recommend what kind of screws? A retired roofer friend said we could you polyurethane caulk on the screws. What do you think? There is a Best Materials site that shows the vent. Also they are on the back side of the house. Is there any reason we HAVE to paint them? Thanks.

Hi Marilyn,
I will try to answer your questions below.
What type of screw to use: any galvanized or stainless steel nail would do fine, with wood threads 1.5" or so long. Nails will do just fine as well.
Polyurethane caulk: that would serve essentially the same purpose as the mastic I applied in the video would. Either mastic or caulking would work just fine.
The only reason to paint a vent is aesthetics. If the vent is not visible from anywhere or you are ok with the galvanized look no need to paint it.
