  • A mixed media canvas I made using collage and acrylic painting techniques. Mr. Octopus was a birthday gift and has found his home in northern Arizona :)

    I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOOOOVE THIS VIDEO! I am in the middle of painting a giant octopus on the floor in my kids' room. I totally forgot about the rubbing alcohol technique. I've used it with sharpies and plates and baked them. I just splattered it all over my painting and it looks so awesome now. Instead of stressing about each sucker's details, I used the lid to my acrylic paint and dabbed it into my diluted white paint.
    I never throw ANYTHING that has a crafting potential away! I'm running out of places to put my craft supplies.. lol
    Keep up the great work and awesome videos.
    BTW.... I WATCHED THE WHOLE VIDEO.

      Shel C Liking my Binder Rings more and more. Sure, it looks loose and weird when the book lays open and flat--but at least it WILL lay flat, right? Also, the freedom of being able to remove or replace or rearrange the pages is nice.
      Got a super messy process to use on a page and don't wish to mess up any of the other pages? Simply remove the mess page and work on it separately.
      :)

    This is great, Shel C! Could you talk more about what the advantage is to collage on the deli paper, cut it out and collage it on vs. collage directly on your substrate?

    • @ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio
      @ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Vonalda :) The advantage is that you don't have to be so fussy keeping in the lines of the shape when you do it on the deli paper first. You can just cut or tear away the overages.

I haven’t collaged since college and I wasn’t even sure where to start. I’m going to try this technique but don’t have deli paper. Would parchment paper work too? Maybe not as easy to see through though.

      Thank you Harriet :) This piece is collaged onto a stretched canvas. To help with piercing I use something called 'deli paper'. It is thin and translucent, but very strong. amzn.to/2LHLblp

      +Jackie Wimberly Thanks Jackie 😊 I do use deli papers ... also newsprint and sometimes text paper or tissue. It's easier to layer with thinner papers.

    I absolutely love this and I'm sure your friend did too! Wonderful video! I have been painting on canvas with acrylics but have an interest in Mixed media. I am interested in doing sort of a vintage paper background which I will paint over and then paint a large flower with acrylics over the top. I have tried to glue the printer copy black and white images to 90lb mixed media paper 9x12 with Golden Matte medium gel. The MM paper buckles and the image copies get a lot of bubbles that have to worked out a lot. I have put heavy weight on the MM paper. Once it dried the bubbles were gone but the paper since buckled. Do on need to work on canvas panels or have you found MM or watercolor paper that works well? The ink from the copy paper also doesn't hold up great with putting the seal on top and bubbles reappear during this process which I did after the bottom glue had dried as I felt the ink would smear more if done at the same time. I would love your advise on copy paper, what printer you use, & MM paper/canvas panels? I plan to cover the entire bottom layer in paper on some of these projects with no paper or canvas showing. Thanks so much! You are an awesome artist. Just found your channel.

      And what type of glue is best for these projects? Napkin decoupage, regular Golden Matte medium, etc. Have you used or heard of YES paste? Thanks again! Priscilla

      Hi and welcome to my channel :) My preferred medium for collage is Liquitex matte gel medium. I apply it with a stiff to both the substrate and the back of the paper and then go over the top of the paper as well. When using a large piece of paper I use a old plastic gift card to smooth out bubbles while it is still wet. As for inked pages..if you use a inkjet printer the ink is not waterfast. If you need some that is, you can get laser copied versions at a copy center. I usually do my large mixed media collage pieces on canvas or cradled wood panels. I hope this helps and have fun with your collage!

    I must try this! Thank you! Question: how do you tear a gel printed paper so you don't get that white edge??

    • @ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio
      @ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Judith :) A basic technique is to tear away from yourself..but deli paper can sometimes be a pain depending on the brand.

      @@ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio huh! I will try that! I have just started my first painted collage piece and was frustrated with the white edges! And yes, Elizabeth St, Hilaire is the bomb!

      Thanks for your imput. This took a LOT of hours so that would be way to long of video though. More like a class. I did do a paid paper painting collage class a few months ago
