  • What do ballerinas eat? What is the diet of ballerinas? How to eat properly when you are a ballerina? In this video, I would like to destroy a few myths about how ballerinas eat, and that we have our own special diet. Yes, a ballerina must observe a diet, but it is far from as strict as they say. What is the ballerinas' meal plan? The ballerina eats a little, but often. That is, instead of three meals, a ballerina eats 5 times a day, watch this video from beginning to end to know everything about the nutrition of ballerinas.

    Hi everyone! I'm going to pop up here to clarify some things: currently I'm recovering from an injury and I'm not exercising at all so this is my meal plan for the time being when I'm not dancing.
    I hope that I'm going to be back on stage soon and I will film a part two of this video where I'll show what my food looks like when I'm fully working.
    And also: by no means do I recommend my style of eating to anyone. I’m not a doctor, nor a nutritionist, nor a cook. Do I do something wrong? Maybe. But I just tell you about what I eat 😊
    Always thankful for your support and I hope you all have a great day!

    I am a dietitian that work me with dancers. Dancers burn about 300 calories per hour of dancing, as a result most dancers tend to under eat resulting in slower metabolism. Most of my dance clients are undernourished. Ideally individuals should eat at their maintenance calories plus the calories burned. That will put most dancers anywhere from 2200-4000 calories a day. It may sound like a lot but research shows that when active dancers generally do ok with this. When they increase there calories they notice they have more energy and feel better. A good rule for protein is double your kg weight in grams would be a good goal. Some may have problems with this so I would start with half that and work your way up. So a 50kg dancer would start at 50g of protein and gradually change increase it to 100g a day. It’s important not only for your muscles but your organs. Malnutrition effects the organs more than the muscles so try to increase your protein and calories if you struggle to eat enough.

      I've seen a number of the ballet dancers what they at least say they eat in a day. Usually they insist they eat "a lot" because they have to dance but what they think is "a lot" is influenced by a lifelime of trying to get a ballet body so is actually not enough for anyone else trying to do a day of dancing. They are small because they worked at it and they are exhausted in away I do not think they would be if they were not always undereating.
      All the muscle they do not actively use gets weeded away resulting in the long and lean look they are after. Hormones in the too thin women are also not good, resulting in brittle bones. I just wish they'd just lay it all out there.

    Hi everyone! I am a professional ballerina and food blogger/ youtuber and I wanted to give you my humble opinion: first of all, Maria obviously eats little (compared with other non dancers or dancers) and does it consciously, that could explain why she is thin (it could also be her body type!). She follows this “diet” in order to maintain the body/shape she chooses to have, according to her criterias, to be as beautiful as she chooses to be and perform the best she can. If this is her choice, you could try to understand it. She is a very well-known dancer who is apreciated for her body and lines, and for her level of performance. She is probably trying to keep it the way it is.
    If Maria ate more, she would probably be more “performant” (even though in dance, performance not only relies on how much you eat, but also on how well you feel about your own body, on self esteem and confidence), her body would probably change as well (she would gain muscle and some fat), and not that I would see anything wrong about it (I like dancers of all shapes), but that would have to be her own choice.
    She might feel great and happy, perform well and love her body the way it is. If this diet allows her to be healthy and get her regular period, feel energetic enough to perform at her level and improve, then let her eat what she likes! I hope that if this is not the case, she is aware of it and changes her diet to become healthy again. And please, don’t be as stupid as to use this video as a reference: this is only what suits HER and her body in this particular situation. Not everyone can feel fulfilled and energetic eating this food and you have to adapt you eating to your own rules.
    Secondly, I think she is talking about what she eats in “a day” (not everyday) during a time of long term injury, and as a ballet dancer I assure you that if you intend to maintain your exact weight (on the long term) while you don’t train as much as usual, you have to reduce your calorie intake (and that must be what she is doing in this video).
    Thirdly, the title of the video does not reflect the real content of it because it might have been chosen in order to improve the click through rate (considering her level of fame she might have a community manager who decides which title would generate the most clicks).
    And finally, you know, ballet dancers who are thin probably follow a diet, that is usual. It does not necessarily mean that they have an eating disorder. Don’t you organize your schedule? And you are not obsessive about it or have OCD right? Well Maria organizes her meals. Just as other athletes do as well, the only difference is that a ballet dancer such as Maria is thin and decides to remain so. I don’t know her personnaly, but I give her the benefit of the doubt: if she was sick, anorexic or orthorexic, she would reach for help, or ask her doctor’s advice.
    Be nice on the social medias,
    Cheers everyone 🫶🏻

      Impressionable is exactly the right word. Maria's physique is becoming the new 'standard' and any videos showing what she eats will be emulated meticulously by a percentage of her audience, some may even decide they have to eat less than her. I'm glad she clarified that this is her diet while not dancing, but share your concern.
      I will say though, as a former anorexic, it is a relief to see that she is not afraid of high calorie foods like cheese, sugar and oil. Hopefully young impressionable people will see that too; a ballerina can eat such things. Her comment about milk was a bit alarming, certainly suggestive of the culture of her profession. I've heard a Russian ballerina talk about how she was bullied for her size as a student and accused of drinking milk. I think they called her 'milkblood'. It's all very sad.

      The level of concern trolling toward women like Maria is so gross. I was reading on a ballet forum that some people didn't think Wendy Whelan should be allowed to be Associate Artistic Director of the NYC Ballet because she was too thin. Like dancers would just catch an ED from looking at her. Imagine taking an artist like Wheland and boiling her accomplishments down to that. And it's always women tearing her down.

    As someone who's no ballerina and could stand to lose some weight and eat better, this paint an encouraging a picture of healthy, joyful, creative eating. The prominence of comfort foods defined by protein and fat is reassuring. It surprises me that you can eat that way while not exerting yourself. Maybe I could reduce my portion sizes and sugar intake with this many cheese-and-fancy-yogurt-related things a in my life. Whatever it would or wouldn't do for me, at least this feels maintainable.

    Thanks Maria for sharing this, I think this is the most anticipated video by many. you are very courageous, and turning the comments section on as well. But I guess, food is a lifestyle choice, so we shouldn’t be pinpointing whether Maria should eat more or less comparing to our own lifestyle choices. She’s just sharing her own diet, if she hasn’t shared this, no one will be commenting on the food she ate and life will go on as normal for her. Furthermore, she has been taking advices for her food choices from nutritionists, colleagues etc, maybe her meals have been planned out for her by nutritionist we all never know. And she could be eating lesser/more than usual because of her schedule. Anyway, thank you Maria for sharing this, it really satisfies our curiosity!

    This is the best “what I eat in a day” video I’ve seen…. I’ve seen other videos by dancers and have been upset by how little they eat, especially protein… I think the diet is great and has a lot of nutrition… I’m not sure why people want her to eat more while not being active…People can only fit so much in at a time:) She did say she would eat more when active and adds snacks as needed… She started the day with two types of cheese which have fat and protein, oatmeal which also has protein, and she ate plenty of carbs and wasn’t shy about adding honey, sugar, and fruit… She also had a large piece of salmon and plenty of salad for lunch, and even added juice… She had three types of protein for dinner and added fruit. The yogurt and egg also have fat… It may be a little more plain than some people like but I don’t see how this is under nourishing oneself as long as you are eating when hungry and until satisfied… Definitely add more snacks as needed or another meal if working out all day, but if you aren’t hungry you shouldn’t be told to force more food down… That’s silly… Maybe also cultural differences as most people where I live eat a large dinner… I dislike a lot of food late in the day so it makes sense to me… I also eat less than she does but am about 7 inches shorter :) 😊

      it's cultural- people in Russia and Eastern Europe don't want a pile of food late in the evening. 5 pm or so. i find a big meal after about 6 to be sickening. you can get calories other times a day. also i so agree- i'm so sick of the "force more food in!". she doesn't want to be fat, she wants to be healthy and in shape- thus protein and good foods. no garbage and no junk food. As far as I can tell the topic of the video is ,’What I eat in a day as a ballet dancer.’ It’s not , ‘What a professional ballet dancer needs to eat according to a nutritionist. ‘ Don’t expect perfection people. There is no claim that this is what everyone or anyone SHOULD eat. Also: Ballet and other extreme sports that require certain looks might not always be the healthiest life style. Professional ballet in stage form is not something anyone does for their health. It takes a toll on the human body and that’s why people don’t train at that level for 50,60 years. People’s bodies can perform at this level for a number of years and then they have to reduce the intensity and hopefully they can continue with a healthy amount of exercise for the rest of their lives.

      yeah, 100%. the issue at hand, i think, is that most people really don't understand how big the pressure is at the theater, and looong before that, at school. these ballet dancers don't even have a chance at a normal diet. they start worrying about their bodies at the age of 10, basically. eating disorders are so common in this world, it's a wonder how ballet schools are still legal. it's great that Maria tries to eat healthy, and quite honestly, she eats a lot compared to other ballet dancers (based on their similar videos). carbs are painfully missing from her diet but other than that she has nutrient-rich meals so good for her. she does her best with the options she has.

    Hi Maria!, sorry to hear you're not dancing right now, I hope you'll get better soon so you can go back to the stage, because you're a really great ballerina!
    Thank you so much for this video, there are so many recipes I didn't know, and what I want to try... And also I think it's so important to broke all that myths about the ballerinas diet, because I really think it's a lie that you don't need to eat almost nothing when you're a ballerina, but it's only to find that balance. I want to be a ballerina, and I'm training for it, and that topic, about the food and all that things it's a topic that has me a little confused in this moment... So...
    Again, thank you so much, and I'll ve waiting for the other video :) Greetings fron México!

    The thumbnail and title make it seem like Ms. Khoreva thinks she is eating a lot of food, like she was trying to debunk the myth that ballerinas don't eat much. If that was the aim, it fails spectacularly. While she shows good quality and variety of food, the portions are extremely small: half a small tomato, 3 cm of cucumber in a salad, just one egg... Even the piece of salmon looked tiny in her hand. I wish her well and I hope this video doesn't trigger people who have ED tendencies.
    As a side note, if Ms. Khoreva is indeed not dancing much and recovering from injury then may I suggest, respectfully, changing the title of the video from "ballerina diet" to something else.

    I'm not a doctor or a dietician, but as far as I can see Maria is eating a variety of foods from all the food groups. She eats complex carbs, proteins, a variety of fruits and vegetables, seeds, oil. Somebody on this thread estimated the amount daily as 1200 calories? I think she is eating a variety of foods, but little of them. She needs to be very thin for her work on the Mariinsky stage - this is in part due to the preference of its Artistic Director for a certain physique - ultra long limbed and extremely thin. Dancers in other companies also have to be thin, but maybe not that thin. It's a real problem. The stage, as also the television/video etc, makes people look heavier than they actually are, so dancers try to be thinner than the average person. Also, the heavier the person, the more stress on joints. I don't know ... I think she is doing the best she can do eat healthily at the weight she needs to be for the Mariinsky stage but it seems very little.

    • @serenosotello736
      @serenosotello736 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      She can't put weight on anywhere, not only on her legs. Ballet dancers need to be a little underweight to look good on stage. But, what looks very thin is actually the body type that dancers usually have. Very small frame is what makes her look so thin. Also, she needs to be lifted while male dancers are tired. Khoreva is not short, so bones are heavy, muscles not as heavy, but heavy, fat is not heavy, just unnecessary.

    • @NatashaEstrada
      @NatashaEstrada ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would estimate it at closer to 600-800kcals. Salmon/oatmeal/eggs and vegetables are not very calorically dense. Maybe I'm underestimating the value of the cheese but cottage cheese is also not very calorically dense.

    • @EmA-sm8se
      @EmA-sm8se ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I am not a ballerina though I practice ballet and other daily sport activities and yes it is healthier and easier to eat small meals throughout the day thus enabling a fast digestion and the pursue of sport activities, whatever, without having a heavy belly. It may feel at times "restrictive" but it is a choice of balancing one's life with the right diet. Water is effectively very important throughout the day as rightly mentioned by Maria. The only remark I can make when seeing the video is that there is no rice/potatoes or pasta in addition to green vegetable/salad. Anyway it is good to note that Maria tries to get a balanced eating diet.

    also, cheese is a very good whole food-high protein, great enzymes, unprocessed. i am a lover of cheese as well-my favorite is raw manchego.
    also, cottage cheese is the best. and the little things in the pomegranate fruit are called “aryls” 😉

    Sometimes I look at skeletal ballerinas and I think there’s no way they are getting a period. I could be wrong, but I feel like that’s a good gage. If your period is shut off for months or years from dance and diet, your body is going into in fight or flight survival mode. Even if you are extremely muscular and strong.

    Devil's advocate: Take into consideration, she is currently not dancing on stage because she can't put too much weight on her legs. She also did mention small snacks throughout the day in between meals, like cookies. For this video, she states she's just covering the main meals. From what I see, she is currently eating nutrient dense, clean foods. Carbs oats, toast. Protein dense: Salmon, eggs (perfect protein), cheese, cottage cheese, Yogurt Omega oils salmon, and olive oil. She did not clarify what her current dance schedule is since she is rehabbing.
    She is checking the boxes with salad ingredients and broccoli. Nutrient dense fruits like currants and pomegranates.

    I was sitting here reading comments about how she was under eating and i thought that was silly. But then she got to her dinner and i was like 😮 oh ok. One little egg, some broccoli and a yogurt that she kind of talked poorly about… I’m also wondering why there’s no flavor. The only seasoning she used was salt and pepper… and then she slammed protein when you need protein for muscle growth. If she’s been injured, then she probably could use more protein to heal… also milk as a guilty pleasure? Girl what?!

    • @sheeniebeanie2597
      @sheeniebeanie2597 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      Hmm, so 40g of oats + 70g of cottage cheese + 1 oz of cheese + bread (+ nuts and berries and sugar) = 510 calories. milk + coffee = 80 calories. 1 steak of salmon (6 oz) + salad = 350 calories. 1 glass of milk = 160 calories. Protein yogurt + mango (it looks like) + egg + steamed broccoli = 290 calories. + oatmeal cookie for snack (est 200 calories). That's about 1500 calories. Also, she didn't slam protein. She said that she has been reading about nutrition and is trying to get more protein in.
      Also, I don't know where you're from, but if you are American like me, then you are used to having 3 big meals a day (I, personally, do not like having 3 large meals, but it is the norm here). I think in other countries, breakfast and lunch are much bigger than dinner. Hence why the small meal for dinner.
      Also, about flavoring, if you have good quality food, you only need salt and pepper. Salt is actually meant to bring out the flavor of the food. It's not like she was having chicken breast or something tasteless--the food she was eating already has distinct flavors. If you like to add herbs and spices to your food (and I like some citrus with my fish, personally) then go for it, but don't knock others for not having the same tastes as you. ❤️

    I'm surprised at the people who say she's not eating enough...It must be a cultural thing, in my family we've always eaten less than this and nobody was dieting or anything. Eating more than one egg in a meal is unconceivable to me, eggs are so heavy on the stomach. Even the salmon was quite a big piece for me, I'd feel satisfied with half of that. And for dinner I'd be fine with the egg, broccoli and fruit, without adding the yogurt and the milk. I think if anyone copies her eating they'd be perfectly healthy, I don't understand all the worrying. I guess some people just need to bring in the eating disorder topic anytime someone talks about food. People are starving out there (not because they choose to) and you just HAVE to eat 3 eggs instead of one. So much of what we eat is just superfluous and eating less while feeling perfectly healthy and satisfied is just a matter of habit that one builds over time. But again, what she eats is normal to me, not at all little. And you should not compare the needs of a small female dancer with those of athletes such as rugby players, bodybuilders or other sportspeople who have to maintain huge muscles

Two things that contain a lot of potassium is avocado and mango - which you obviously already eat. But even if I do different kind of salads, when I eat salmon I started to do a salad with avocado, mango and some edamame beans/soy beans (for extra protein), and then I cover it all with crema di balsamico. While this does look like very little food, do remember she was just showing her 3 main meals of the day in this video, and that she’s recovering from an injury so not as physically active as she’d normally be. These meals and some snacks throughout the day, and you’d easily get the amount of calories needed in a day when not being very physically active. I see complex carbs here, good protein, good fats from salmon, avocado and oil and vitamins from fruits and vegetables.
    I’m not a dancer, nor am I skinny, but often struggling with low appetite. It’s not uncommon for me to only eat one meal per day (I know, it’s bad… And I actually tend to lose weight when I have the appetite to eat more often), and sometimes that meal is just some pan roasted Brussels sprouts and some bacon because that might be the only thing I want to eat at the time. Meals don’t have to be huge, the main thing is to eat well and give your body what it needs
    Hope you’ll recover from your injury very soon Maria!

Now that I've gotten better in the kitchen, I've discovered I can have incredibly tasty chickpea curries, lentils, quiche, chunky soups, and wraps and still not go above 300 calories per meal! They're very, very healthy, as they're full of vegetables.
    Just saying this in case someone thinks in order to be healthy you must stick to basic meals with just salt, pepper and lemon. That works wonders for some (and it's such a classic salmon dish like the one in this video), but not for all (especially if your culture isn't European, like mine). ✨

    To cook oatmeal, place the oatmeal (old fashioned slow cooking oatmeal) in a bowl with high sides (relative to the amount of oatmeal). Add some chopped apple, grapefruit segments, and water (experiment a bit with quantities)-stir a bit to combine. Microwave, on high, for exactly 6 minutes. Remove from the microwave, add some chopped banana, and enjoy with a good book. Very quick, very yummy, and no nasty pot to clean-enjoy : )

    Idk what size plates people are using but I put in what I imagined was the amount of food I see in this video and it’s roughly 1000kcal 😅 they’re good good choices as far as I can tell, just less than what I imagine a dancer (even one that is resting) would eat? I do think she does this to maintain her ballet physique, which is part of her job. Normal people eat more though, but normal people are also not as slim and toned. 😂

      It's not. If you put it into Cronometer, it's about 1700-1900 calories (obviously it's a bit difficult without exact measurements). It's not the volume, it's the caloric density that counts. People will only look at the broccoli and egg and casually forget the sugars, oil, honey, and cheese, not to mention that salmon is a fatty fish and that was a big ol' slab :D Which is also the reason why most people overeat without realising it, we tend to forget about a lot of the little things. It's actually kind of telling that people think she's undereating, really gives you a hint how out of whack most people's understanding of portion sizes and nutritional value has gotten. (Not meant to be mean towards you by the way, just a general observation.)

    Cottage cheese is of course a possible translation of the Russian творог (tvorog) but they are rather different things. In the U.S. if you are lucky you can find farmers cheese, or even real tvorog sometimes imported from former USSR states. It is delicious when fresh and if without chemical additives (as some U.S. manufacturers add, unfortunately, to extend the shelf life).

    It all looks delicious and like something that I eat too, but I eat a little more, and I’m just a ballet student. I bet you work even harder and longer than I do. I feel like, the amount wouldn’t be enough energy to bring me through a 4-5 hour class.

    Please everyone remember that this is just a one day in Maria's life and she propably doesn't eat the same every day. Some days you're more hungry than others. Yeah, I have to agree that she is very small even for a ballerina but if she's happy with what she's doing and eating then what's the problem

    Fresh eggs are always harder to peel (less airbpocket between the membrane & the shell. A piece of foil under the salmon in the airfryer would save mess and a piece of foil under the metal basket saves all the crumbs & drips from reaching the base so you rarely need to clean base or basket ❤

    Were you guys really expecting normal sized meals from this girl? Lol she’s probably constantly in a calorie deficit or very low calories to maintain this extreme weight. And if she actually can maintain this weight while still having a menstrual cycle, and not harming herself (which is highly unlikely but possible) then she’s a genetic freak and she definitely chose the right profession!

      She is a dancer, not sumo wrestler 🙄 A touch of jealousy, perhaps?

      No jealousy here lol I am actually quite thin myself, and might be in the minority of women that actually like how they look. I’m just stating what is objectively obvious. Many girls have come out on TH-cam talking about how prevalent eating disorders are at the Vaganova… but like I said, she could be a genetic outlier, who knows 🤷‍♀️

    Orthorexia with compulsive exercise has replaced anorexia as the main disorder among dancers. It won't kill you as quickly but can still cause longterm damage. Please feed your bodies. And do not treat perfectly common food as a guilty pleasure.
