  • In January I had my second and final open heart surgery. In honor of being officially cleared to start working out again, I thought I would post this for y'all to have an insight on what happened while I was in the hospital. This was definitely one of the most difficult times of my life, but Im so blessed to be healed and on the road to recovery!!

I had a triple heart bypass 8 years ago, so when I see another patient who is having heart surgery I get choked up. But you are really young to be having heart surgery. I was 67. I'm in England, but the ICU looked pretty similar. When you were walking along the corridor next to the accompanying nurse after the op, I thought, oh she's a tall girl. But then at the end of the video you made reference to getting back your favourite sport, volleyball! Please make a full recovery and live a long and happy life. Good luck!

I didn't know who you were as an athlete, but I'm having open heart surgery (my third in my life, but had the others to young to remember) next week and was looking for videos about what to expect. This was so helpful, I really appreciate you and your family putting this up. Obivously everyone's surgery experience is a little different but this makes me a feel a bit better about it :) I hope you're doing well now!

I'm not sure if you'll see this because it was written so late from when tie video was posted, but worth a shot. This is very interesting to see, coming from someone who has also had OHS. When I was 4 months old I had my ASD, VSD, and AV Canal repaired, presumably I will not be needing any more surgeries, although you can never be too sure on that. My youngest brother has also had OHS and has valve issues that I believe are the same as yours, although I could be mistaken. Within the coming years he will have to have another surgery to replace one of his valves completely. It's nerve wracking but trust that he'll be in good hands. As of now I am only 14 and he is 12 but it is very comforting to see someone with similar heart issues get through a surgery so smoothly nonetheless. Congrats on the smooth recovery!

I wish I could go to the Cleveland Clinic, like you. They might just be the best in the world. I will be traveling to the nearest high volume hospital that deals with the mitral valve. I am nervous (!) Your story is very encouraging to me and I know that it took a lot of commitment to follow through and record everything. I just had mine feb 22 the most miserable experience of my life. I’ve been out of the hospital ( which was the worst week I’ve spent anywhere) one month now, I stopped all medications after the first week they were making me nauseous. I was getting nose bleeds. Still something went wrong during surgery my hearts not pumping full capacity . But at least the valve is changed n I have no blockages. Guess it is what it is. I hope you recover fully n don’t sneeze ! Thank you for sharing your story . Fellow member of the zipper club!

I fully agree that the circumstances in the hospital stay itself made things pretty miserable. I didn't really get more than 8 hours of sleep total over 11 days stay at the hospital for an aortic root aneurysm removal. The room was either too cold or I was getting checked by nurses 30 times a day and couldn't get any sleep at all until I left.

After six weeks I was allowed to start doing cardio and I felt incredible! I obviously had to get back in shape, but I definitely felt a huge difference. Three months after surgery I was completely cleared and able to play volleyball and I felt great. Now 15 months post surgery, its crazy to think about how poorly i felt before and how great I feel now! During my recovery most of my pain just came from my chest (as they had to break the sternum),but the dr also said because im a younger high level athlete that my recovery can be quicker and different than others.

I had a major stroke 26 years ago...I had just turned 32 two months before. It was from a congenital heart defect. I had to have open heart surgery....and it sucked. It was a misdiagnosed heart defect and I had to have 2 brain surgeries after over a dozen years of focal seizures that were not diagnosed by my neurologists. It was my primary care MD. I had my surgery April 11 . Today starts my 3 week of healing. I think my doctors are confused how I made it through the operation. I have many heath problems and really by the statistics. I shouldn't have made it off the table. I told all my doctors that I wasn't ready to die. Even after being discharged from the hospital I'm getting stronger everyday. Everyone I know kept asking me if I was scared my answer was always no. If I didn't do it I'd die and if I did I could die. I guess the question they should have asked is do I fear death. That would be Nope.

Did you have a urinary catheter? If yes when was it removed? And how bad were your chest tubes and when did they ultimately come out?

Not the poster of this video but as someone who has had heart surgery I can tell you that all major heart surgeries result in a catheter so you can pass urine during the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours post surgery, when you are immobilized. It is typically taken out a day or two after surgery, i.e. when they get you out of bed and shuffling around under your own power. The chest tubes were no big deal- they snip the sutures and with a quick heave they come right out.
