I remember watching this video last year when I was obsessed with buying one. I've now been a proud owner of this car for nearly a year now and I absolutely love it!
I have the FN2 and can say all models of type Rs have this feeling. When vtec kicks in it gives an angry gurgle (especially non turbo ones) and makes you grin ear to ear. You would have more fun in a type R than most expensive sub 5 second cars. So raw and so much driving feedback.
I test drove the Type-R and I have to say that I loved the engine note. It has a nice growl to it and then those awesome turbo sounds makes shifting gears epic!
Because lots of revs and instant throttle response is more fun than a turbo. It depends, but for the most part turbo four cylinders are biased to low to mid-range torque and most of them fall flat at high rpm, whereas in my opinion the higher the revs, the harder is should go... more natural. :)
I beg to differ, on boost performance & those dump valve & wastegate sounds are pure motorsport theatre. Also you can get revs galore with the right kind of tuning. There is no way the VTEC of old could compete with the the current turbocharged competition, never mind pass emission tests.
I can understand that, but don't tell me having about double the torque of a naturally aspirated engine under your right foot, even with slight delay, isn't intoxicating. otherwise nobody would buy an Evo or a WRX STi. If you're in a proper gear you can absolutely FLY and it makes funny noises on lift-off.
Re: Kristian Kopacik.. STis and Evos just aren't as fun as you might think (you can't go flat out everywhere on the road in them, it's excessive and there is no incentive to). Lots of people go from Evos and WRX/STis to Honda Type Rs, S2000s and Toyota 86s (or from Type Rs to STis and back to Type Rs). The whooshy turbo noises are nice, but after 5 minutes driving you don't even notice them anymore, so that's not a big game changer IMO. It's a question of quality vs quantity. You're going flat out every drive in a lower powered car and it's more fun.
Zerofightervi i personality want the loud exhaust of non-turbo cars when i put my foot on the pedal but i prefer the turbo sound psssssss when i take it off
Honda has always made the best shifters, the best fwd track suited cars and pity that the new age requries turbos cause the vtec would've been the most exciting engine in its class. FACTS
Owned mine for 5 months now. Agree with everything except the turbo noises, I love hearing it spool and blow off! You're especially right about the scuffing the rims too, mine are a right mess! Also the turning radius absolutely sucks, it's hard to drive in multi story car parks. But apart from that, incredible car I'll be happy to own for the next 10 years!
I'd seriously consider this. To drive, even Pistonheads placed it ahead of the Focus RS for fun. Then because it's a Honda, it will not go wrong. And i love it's insane and crazy looks. Plus the insane engineering behind the scenes.
You're spot on. People who haven't driven it will say FWD = understeer = boring. We've had a lot more fun in this on track than some supposedly driftier cars. But the Type R is a proper laugh
Love my Civic Type R, so I know exactly what you talking about mate. Also, the random waves and thumbs up you get from strangers as you drive along the freeway is a nice touch
The infotainment system is actually amazing. It's based on Android and in fact you can install ANY Android app on it (after some digging). It's the only car with in fact limitless possibilities on multimedia system.
David Anderson if there was a s3 hatch in usa, i would get it. golf r is nice but doesnt look different from regular golf. the type r in usa will be a hatch, and stand out. too bad it wont be awd. so hard to choose lol.
You guys can talk all you want about the Ford RS, Golf R or the amg. But when you drive this car it's the most fun car ever! Reliable and cheap to buy now. You can get one for 25000€ almost new! Yes I've driven all of the other cars I named earlier but this is my choice!
Why haven't you updated the Infotainment system? It'a really easy to do and massively improves the GUI and it's usability.... First thing I did in my CR-V.
Just sold my Type R and got an RS. I could not get on with the laggy throttle in the R and "rev hang", very frustrating. The RS throttle is great, instant and punchy. The R did feel quicker or more manic than the RS but having AWD, well you can't beat it really. The RS sounds so much better too.
I think you cant really "hate" the lost grip in the wet because YOU bought a high hp fwd. And I think you cant discredit it for its 2.0 l4 turbo sound. there is not 1 newish stock l4 turbo that sounds much different. The tire eating habbit could also be the driver and the tires fault partly at least. Plus again fwd high hp.
I'm not sure the CivicType R is the better car overall. Especially when you have the Focus RS as a competitor. Quick question, do you think they'll make a 4wd Type R anytime soon?
be aware the focus rs brakes are bad, the differencial will overheat and turn off, the drift mode is rubbish, the interior is really bad and the driving position is too high
I had a 9 years old peugeot 207 gt and that one did not have that much kurb damage on it in years. Does not matter if you cant see back, use your side mirror man. It is not the alloys or car fault you scratched them, you just do not care coz it is not yours. I did damage my wheels mostly in parking houses, never by parking the car. I am not that kinda who pushes the car exactly next to kerb, leave there like 10 cm.Look after your car if you cant use tube or buses.
The worst thing about these is that Honda are replacing it straight away which means it will devalue like a stone. You can get a barely used type r for £24k already. Even ex demo 10k + miles Focus RS's are selling more for more than list price.
Who knows the song that is playing at the beginning and end of the video? it keeps playing through the video but it's too short for Shazam to pick it up. Thanks

There is just one thing I hate about the Civic Type R: I don't have one.
True
Just bought one in 2021
Just got hold of a 2017 final edition 👍

This review is on the next level of fun.
I test drove the Type-R and I have to say that I loved the engine note. It has a nice growl to it and then those awesome turbo sounds makes shifting gears epic!
It made us feel like BTCC drivers. That's a good thing we think.
How can people not like Turbo sounds & all that it brings with it?
Because lots of revs and instant throttle response is more fun than a turbo. It depends, but for the most part turbo four cylinders are biased to low to mid-range torque and most of them fall flat at high rpm, whereas in my opinion the higher the revs, the harder is should go... more natural. :)

6:42 Is that rice?
Pretty sure that was the "easter egg" in this video.
You're right! Good call - I missed it. Thanks.
Philip Scott lmao. no. if this is rice than i can name other cars that are not japanese rice too
AlienNinjaPuppy No, there's actual physical rice in the boot at 6:42
actually ive been seeing lots of rice in cars here! Literal fucking rice at the trunk! I work in a car disassembling company btw
The rice in the boot when he lifted up the false floor was absolutely priceless!!!! Lol.
The funniest CarWow video to be fair 😅 The crappy horn sound is because of Japanese noise regulations
Good knowledge, thanks! Glad you liked it
But this isn't for JDM. So why they follow that rule in Swindon? Even only 750 were imported into Japan, then importer can modify the horns
I adore this car . It is the best Japanese hot hatch you can possibly get.
I'd seriously consider this. To drive, even Pistonheads placed it ahead of the Focus RS for fun. Then because it's a Honda, it will not go wrong. And i love it's insane and crazy looks. Plus the insane engineering behind the scenes.

You shouldn't use teeth when opening a condom, Mat!
Might end up with tiny Mat-gearknobs running around
Apparently that's how Asimo was conceived
carwow oh god
so let's forget about the weird s&m bit at the start
Lmao you killed me with the Mike Tyson
Look, I would like you to make a comparison with Honda type R fk2 and type R fk8 🤔?
My realistic dream car 😍
The infotainment system is actually amazing. It's based on Android and in fact you can install ANY Android app on it (after some digging). It's the only car with in fact limitless possibilities on multimedia system.
Yeah… but it's still awful. We'd rather have something that works when we want to drive and listen to music than play Candy Crush in traffic. Soz.
How do you install any app on it?!
Carwow happy 2017 cant wait for this years reviews that are to come !
I thought I was the only one who uses their car to grate cheese!
Have you got a Nissan Brie-TR? Or a Hyundai Parmesanta Fe?
@@carwow oh. my. gosh. never have I EVER seen these extraordinary play on words! Marvelous.
this guy should be on top gear
Sachinth Nair Matt, Chris and this guy. Rory could have his job then.
Noooooo, please don't compare this car with Trump.
15october91 offensive to the car
15october91 hes a brit he dont know shit
Fuck Trump.
God Emperor Trump is the best
suck it ip buttercup
The Golf R is the one I'd go for or an Audi S3
David Anderson focus RS beats them all
Giroud And he'd probably still go for the Golf or Audi.
David Anderson if there was a s3 hatch in usa, i would get it. golf r is nice but doesnt look different from regular golf. the type r in usa will be a hatch, and stand out. too bad it wont be awd. so hard to choose lol.
+david anderson they r just so unreliable
jamiecivic until the first corner when your rs3 plows off the road with understeer
Still waiting for the Honda Odyssey Type R.
That would be so wild

All that rice in the boot at 6:42 - a nod to the civics predecessors
And also the rear wing..
Zero Ninety Im not a honda guy and I love a wingles clean car but that wing is really functional in high speeds and track use
This is the best review so far, entertaining and informative at the same time, good job carwow.
i never will be able to look at a type r gear stick normally ever again
Mat, you nailed it! Perfect review!
I have a normal 1.6 civic and it's great. And comes with a parcel shelf. Same problem in the wet funnily enough and it's not as powerful as R
Why haven't you updated the Infotainment system? It'a really easy to do and massively improves the GUI and it's usability.... First thing I did in my CR-V.
Nice attempt to relate to a completely different car.
the most funny review ever, he is one of the few presenters who he is getting better n better by time
greetings from Greece
Thanks! Greetings from London
I love mine, the only issues i'd say are the front tyre wear is unreal, and the +R mode is way too stiff. Other than that it's epic.
James Healey these are the only things that put me off getting one in the future.. and the fact that it's a 4 seater...
We got through a set of fronts in 4500 miles, but some of that was down to the carwow olym… summer games.
Did you find the Michelin Cup 2 tyres lasted longer?
James Healey yes Im on cup2 they last more. conti6 or 4s are way too soft tyres for the grip this car generates in the front. and grip=wear
The lengths you go to to prove a point, truly exemplary :D
Both the car and your review brought smiles...
You have properly good cars! 911 and a Type R! Not to mention the fact these videos are so brilliant, and funny and amazing!
Seriously, the horn is VERY important. It definitely should be a MUST in every car review
Really didn't expect to laugh at the horn.... but that is classic!
Those seats looks gorgeous
Wasn't on this channel for a while. Forgot how entertaining it is. Keep up the good work :)
Really good video, always entertaining and amusing.
4:40 SHOTS FIRED TO THE RICER OMG NOT THE STEEL CHAIR!
No boost at low rpm is NOT turbo lag. It's boost threshold. Turbo lag is how long the turbo takes to spool when it is in it's operating range of rpm.
Remap may have sorted any lag? RS still nice though.
Thanks very much, Mat! A joy to watch
The horn!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Got to be the only car video ever with reference to Opus Dei. Great!
this type R looks like a minivan, but it looks so much better and cooler than the current one
tracksuit... nicely done Matt
Really enjoying the vlogs.
They are great fun.
Haha that mimicked turbo sound killed me! :D
9:57 I knew he'd run back to it xD
"Top 10 thing you like about Type R" Time for the adidas top! haha
This car is epic, despite any shortcomings
Serious question will a guy my size fitt in the seats?
Yo Matt, i think i saw u in my local brothels. I think u took the dungeon service. Miss Bella is supposed to be very mean, ive been told.
So *that's* what that was on his expenses form
Never again attempt humour
omg that condom "gag" was a riot
Why didn't you go with the focus rs?
Love the review and love the car! thanks!
I will have this car by springtime thanks for the review it was informative + entertaining
😂😂😂😂the horn sounds like my brothers transport car😂😂😂
Best looking type r
Hey, Mat, what is your next long term car then ??
Jonny on the gearstick 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I wonder if this FK2 Civic Type R compare to the last Japanese Domestic Market Civic Type R FD2. Which one that you guys prefer?
that was awesome !! keep up the good work! !
how comfortable is this car on long jorneys (on the highway)?
I still love this car even though it’s getting a bit old.
Type R to Rs4 avant. Well done💪
I think you cant really "hate" the lost grip in the wet because YOU bought a high hp fwd. The tire eating habbit could also be the driver and the tires fault partly at least. Plus again fwd high hp.
these are quite special reasons for loving and hating a car. Good job!
I always hear how much better the focus rs and civic type r are than the golf r. But I I see so many more golf r's on the road.
What's going on?
the VW is the best performance everyday car. Easier to live with. Also the badge.
Badge snobbery.
Most people don't want a edgy road car. People who buy a Golf R are often people who just want the most powerful, most top of the range Golf.
Focus and Civic are better on a race track. Golf is much better as a car and more friendly to live with.
Fionn McManus golf had huge deals in the r up to 20% off which is probably why
It just looks far better than the Focus or the Golf as well. Absolutely love the look of this car...
Still better looking than the new Type R
I'm not sure the CivicType R is the better car overall. Especially when you have the Focus RS as a competitor.

I like your reviewing style. Please don't ruin it with unnecessary crassness.
Mat which car would you prefer as a weekend car (not track) hothatch like civic R or porsche 996? Why?
+Hubert Frej for sheer road slaying - the Honda.
Ahh, the old one looks so weird looking back at this. The front hood is so... straight slope like and it's overall not as aggressive as the new one.
I had a 9 years old peugeot 207 gt and that one did not have that much kurb damage on it in years. Does not matter if you cant see back, use your side mirror man. the sat nav is crazy easy to use
Hi Matt, I have had my type r now for 3 months in gun metal grey and love it. what type of fuel did you put in it?
Josh Horrill I'm guessing 97, turbo engines like these tend to need higher octane fuels to show full potential
Cheers, I think it's hard though to notice any real difference
Petrol (mostly). Usually 95 with 97 for special treats.
carwow Hi, do you notice any less performance with 95? or impact??
mat you are so funny and i really like to seen your videos well keep going the go work
Great humor here 😂good review
I bought the fk2 type r Today and its amazing
The worst thing about these is that Honda are replacing it straight away which means it will devalue like a stone. You can get a barely used type r for £24k already. Even ex demo 10k + miles Focus RS's are selling more for more than list price.
noticed this the other day, 23,500 I found one for with 3k miles on, GT model too with carbon pack. So cheap
Mett Euston Focus RS is nicer imo.
All RS Fords are known to have very little depreciation. That's why the focus appeals to non-car enthusiasts too.
We reckon they're going to be future classics. The shortest run UK Type R they're likely to make (other than the NSX).
sounds better than a Focus Rs.
Who knows the song that is playing at the beginning and end of the video? it keeps playing through the video but it's too short for Shazam to pick it up.
Thanks
Oh man, Mat is so "free" now
When I saw this car at the Geneva motorshow someone stole the gear knob.
Probably been gaffer taped to an EP3. :D
I wish i had that much experience with condoms. Anyway great review.
Can you do a review on the new Civic as soon as it becomes available, end of February I heard
They haven't even done a jazz yet!
Slater nater who cares Honda's are shit. Even the new NSX which is a supercar can't really compete with an R8 or 570S.
No one cares about a jazz tho
peacegod101 The NSX is 2 or 3 tenths a second per lap down on the R8. Not bad considering it's their first modern supercar
I care about the jazz ☹. And if Hondas were that shit they wouldn't have sold 100 million of them.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X is my absolute Dream Car.
Civic Type R is nice too👍
Lovely car, i own mine now for 2 years and it's the best decission i ever made.
I do agree with most of these statements haha.
Hate when people complain about stiff suspension 😒
