The EP3 made a huge splash in the UK. Like America is enjoying the latest generation. Which we went crazy for! Even though I think it's just too tech dependent, and the platform is heavy. Side airbags, variable suspension, etc. Imagine the latest Type R in a EP3 or EK hatch. It'd be so crazy, and fast
EG6 was never a Type R, it's just become a popular shell to use for engine swaps and the like because it's such a decent chassis to work with... Minus the usual JDM rust on shells of that era...
To be quite honest, my favourite Civic is the FN2. Yes, it’s not the best Civic, but really just looks so special to me. It was that very generation of the Civic that I led me to finding about Honda. It was my first Honda Civic ever to see in my block’s of flats yard. It wasn’t a Type R, but I was just adoring its futuristic looks. And the Mugen version just makes the FN2 the Type R it is supposed to be. The cherry on the cake
For all those saying where is the EK9, this is for you! EK9 was only released in Japan and this was an all UK CTR test. But just in case you insist, there is a video here in youtube done by Best Motoring in Japan. They compared stock ek9 vs stock ep3 and the EP3 won hands down. In fact the the JDM ep3 also out performed the DC5 and DC2 in that same test.
The JDM EP3 is much better then what the UK spec was, 16hp more had a LSD, Higher Redline, tighter gearing, stiffer chassis, it's basically a new car. thats better then the EK9 the UK spec EP3 was not better though.
The JDM EP3 is better because the ECU is set up with more power, thanks to JDM good fuels quality available! Also JDM S2k got 250 HP when the US AND EU got 240HP.

AHMAD H. Ah i wish we got the mugen here in Australia. But we dont unfortunately. My mate has done an engine swap instead. It has a k24 bore & the k20 top. He’s got the big wing & bumper to make it look like a mugen too. I gotta say, it goes hard for a n/a hot hatch. A real gem in todays performance car scene where everything is turboed
4:28 Suspension setup is so incredibly important to a car. The EK9 had double wishbone which is just unbeatable in feel. I had a EJ Coupe and the combination of all round double wishbone and hydraulic power steering made it one of the best cars I've ever had the pleasure to drive dynamically. Use of a multi link rear suspension is what made the Ford Focus the must have car when first released. Fully independent suspension is heavy, expensive and intrudes on cabin space/crumple zones but it's just unbeatable in terms of feedback, response and behaviour at the limit. If you want to make a decent car put it on a decent platform, quite simple really......
I feel most reviewers of the type r completely miss the point of the vtec and the high revving and adrenaline pumping sounds. Yes you can have a golf gti (yawn) which will be quicker, but realistically where can you use that in the modern world? The vtec engine makes you want to change down a gear and nip round the corner a bit quicker than normal as it rewards the driver and makes you feel racey. In the st or gti you do not get that. As an owner and daily driver of an FN2 from 08, and previously driven EP3 and FK2 i personally enjoy the ugly duckling, the FN2 the most. Perhaps not esthetically, but the fact that it drives fun, but also comfortably when needed makes it the best overall vehicle for me.
The ep3 just looks dated. The fn2 looks like many new hot hatches even though it's 10 years old. And the fk8 stands out from the mundane current hot hatches.
Far as I know ep3 and the fn2 are pretty much the same apart from the ep3 has sports suspension but the fn2 has more street suspension, much more comfortable for daily use.
@@Big-T- I prefer the looks of the fn2 but the ep3 seems to be faster round a track. I'm guessing it's down to the 100kg weight difference and the ep3 having multi link rear suspension.
I picked up an EP3 Type R a few days ago (with some choice mods) as a fun car to take to trackdays. I haven't stopped smiling since. I may not be the fastest car out there, but I can guarantee I will be having the most fun... In these days of nearly every car having a turbo and getting used to lazy torque, having a naturally aspirated high revving nutter car like an ep3 is a breath of fresh air! Love it.
Totally agree. I used to drive an EP2 civic, which was the baby 1.6 vtec. Down on power but the handling and feel of the car was absolutely amazing; handled so well and effortlessly took on b roads!
Had one since new and still going strong after 140k Miles. Just always keep the Castrol edge topped up and you won’t go wrong. Never run on low oil or the chain can jump a cog. Change the timing chain and tensioner if you haven’t already as they ALL stretch and will throw your timing out a twitch. And that doesn’t always mean you’ll lose vtec. It won’t snap, but well worth replacing. Switch out the tyres for 215’s on original rims and you’ll find your wheels won’t spin up awfully like they do on standards in the wet. Can totally recommend Goodyear eagle assymetric 2 and 3’s for all year round tyres, superb in wet. Bulletproof otherwise. Enjoy
I have a 2011 Civic and I absolutely LOOOVE IT. And its not even the Type R… regular 1.8. Before that I had the 2017 Civic and boy it doesnt come close to the 2011. ❤️
Had the ep3 great car loved how it drived apart from when it rained the back end would flip out! I now own a 08 plate FN2 with remap exhaust induction kit better suspension set up with new bushes and its a fantastic car pulls like a train on the motorway! And they are going up in value 😁😁
Slightly late but what induction did you go for? Have had my 2011 FN2 for few months now and was planning on few subtle mods, mainly the HKS induction for that real bark crossover
@@web_mtb have had mine on for couple months now and it’s night and day difference mate. Wasn’t expecting such a big sound difference but the bark and crossover is a lot lot louder which is just what I was looking for. Go for it well worth it. Make sure the heat shield is included as well 👍🏻
Nah, I had one for four years (35k miles done in it) and I've a FK2 now and not for a second would i swap it for a FK2,. The EP3 is still a great car though!
I agree, been driving an ep3 for 12 years. I like it better than my 02 Wrx. I’ve driven Wrx’s, sti’s, and Civic Si’s of all years and the ep just feels the best. Plus I love that it’s completely analog, no driver aids.
@Chad Andersen Is it worth buying as track car? I recently built a k24 block/k20 head into a CRX but that's a car that i will give dad for his birthday. What is the curb weight? It's also a k20a stock right? if i buy one it will get stripped out anyways for Stockcars/Dig race/roll races.
Smokey EP3! I don’t think the engine was warm enough! Standard FN2 driver had to of been on the brakes first. The brakes in those are not good! EDIT 4:24 the FN2 is getting ragged and the temperature needle hasn't even lifted. Come on guys you should know better than this.
Jamie Stone it would be okay even if it did burn oil. All high revving NA motors will burn oil at some rate. AP1 S2000s burn a lot but that's the nature of the engine. Nothing wrong with it just gotta stay on top of it.
I love the EP3! There are a few hot hatch icons in my eyes, GTI Mk1, 205 GTI, Fiesta ST Mk7, Focus RS Mk2 (plus a few more) and without a doubt this EP3.
I bought the EP3 (Face lift model ) brand new in 2002, I swapped if for a 2002 Subaru WRX STI, both great cars, but I regret selling the EP3, it was so much fun, with the best gear box I have ever had, when the VETEC kicks in hold on !!
Soochul Song I’m in a small rural town in Australia, the dealer didn’t have much of a market to sell to so he was happy to let me take it out. I’ll definitely buy one through them now, just might be a few years!

Mcufre Yeah, they sold the FN2 in the UK. There's currently a White FN2 Mugen for sale in England at £5,990 and an even cleaner Red FN2 Mugen for sale at £7,220. There's also an FD2 Type R JDM import for £14,995 lol
Craig Mitchell Pretty sure the red one is a real Mugen or its a very convincing Mugen replica considering it's got the Mugen interior with red Recaros and harnesses. But upon closer look the white one is just a Mugen body kit. There was a limited edition run of Championship White FN2 Type Rs, however the Mugen FN2 wasn't limited to White only.
You mentioned hot hatches of the early 2000s but you forgot the VW r32 with it’s sick sounding VR6 with the screaming 240 horsepower and GT-R inspired all wheel drive system

Good to hear, i personally love how the FN2 looks.
He said, "VTEC Yo!" Hahahaha! Is that in the owner's manual somewhere?
I picked up an EP3 Type R a few days ago (with some choice mods) as a fun car to take to trackdays. I haven't stopped smiling since. I may not be the fastest car out there, but I can guarantee I will be having the most fun... In these days of nearly every car having a turbo and getting used to lazy torque, having a naturally aspirated high revving nutter car like an ep3 is a breath of fresh air! Love it.
The EP3 looks the best cheap and sounds so good !
This video brought a tear to my eye... nothing to do with the cars but I've flown both the Vickers VC-10s in the background! Queen of the skies!
Totally agree. I used to drive an EP2 civic, which was the baby 1.6 vtec. Down on power but the handling and feel of the car was absolutely amazing; handled so well and effortlessly took on b roads!
Even the underrated D series engines are fabulous & better than many so-called better engines from other manufacturers.
Just fitted coilovers and poly bushes on my ep2 I love it aha
Thats a lot of RPM right there! Great video.
i love my ep3..seems like everything i watch that civic is best
Drag racing Type Rs is like taking Hellcats to the canyons. Doesn't really make sense, but it's fun
All I was thinking for the whole vid is
“When the v-tec kicks in yo”
So original..
i just bought my EP3 yesterday, no it's not fast, but yes it's fun! and LOUD.
Totally agree on the ep3 being the best type r, i love mine even though i have had it for a few weeks.
Enjoy
My all time favourite Civic Type R: EP3
I have a 2011 Civic and I absolutely LOOOVE IT. And its not even the Type R… regular 1.8. Before that I had the 2017 Civic and boy it doesnt come close to the 2011. ❤️
So the ultimate YOBO mobile is, once again the original"Honda civic type R"
Also known as yawndas
Not technically the original. That was the ek9 type r
I loved my ep3 that I had 13 years ago. It felt like you were starting up a spaceship.
@@LOSTBHOY88 yeah i’m looking at getting one of them they sound brilliant
@@web_mtb have had mine on for couple months now and it’s night and day difference mate. Wasn’t expecting such a big sound difference but the bark and crossover is a lot lot louder which is just what I was looking for. Go for it well worth it. Make sure the heat shield is included as well 👍🏻
EP3 all day.
Yazeed Saber ek9
The ep3 for sure, i love my ep3 with a edm type r swap, 286k miles going strong!
never clicked on a video so fast
Satrio Adji same mate
That EP3 at 2:03 is smoking like a chimney.
It's just going to sound like ANGRY BEES in a race
Gundeep Virdi you mean lawnmowers 😂😂
Or the sound of Dominic Toretto about to steal a truck full of VCRs
Jkrui I don’t think he’s the moron here...
Gundeep Virdi true
Gundeep Virdi not even close you fucking ricer
2:00. "AWWW that VTech Yo!"
OMG he EP3 sounds amazing ,I'm watching this 2022 and I'm impressed of the EP3.
Lovely car
the brake test is so hopelessly inaccurate
It'll still give a general idea
Smokey EP3! I don’t think the engine was warm enough! Standard FN2 driver had to of been on the brakes first. The brakes in those are not good!
EDIT 4:24 the FN2 is getting ragged and the temperature needle hasn't even lifted. Come on guys you should know better than this.
faulty gauge.
Faulty gauge? In Honda? This is honda, not VW.
im amazed at how equally matched they all are in a straight line, all good cars. love type r's. dads got a 297bhp at the wheels ep3 NA. its lively
What’s the engine spec of your dads Ep3?
297 to the wheels is what 350-/+ at fly, 297 to the fly is still a big ask for a n.a k series but doable
THE SMOKE FROM EP3 😂
Armatura Records R.I.P oil
Gotta go fastt
Gotta stay on top of that oil level
Armatura Records my 2002 64k ep3 doesn’t burn a drop of oil, Mobil 1 since first oil change.
@@user-oo8us not a hot hatch
Should do a drag race of early 00s hot hatches, Mk4 GTi, Cupra R, EP3,Octavia vRS 1.8t, Focus RS, Clio 182 ect….
Amazing, amazing cars! Love this chanel!
Proves just how far ahead of the game the EP3 was.
EP3 is the best looking for me, I’ve always wanted one
Yes EP3 is the definition of Type R breed.....new gen turbo type Rs dont give you same sensation as older high reving lively chasis Type Rs......
UK EP3 Type R didn't even have a LSD. Worst Type R ever produced. Slow on a track too.
Nah, EK9 is the definition of the type r.
Type R NSX... the Type R.
Jared Scott my bad, totally forget about the nsx
NSX Type R would still demolish everything here can do 12.8 in the 400m.
I would get the EP3 because you integrate in traffic so good
I prefer it's more understated looks. Newer ones are just ugly to boy racer.
I bought the EP3 (Face lift model ) brand new in 2002, I swapped if for a 2002 Subaru WRX STI, both great cars, but I regret selling the EP3, it was so much fun, with the best gear box I have ever had, when the VETEC kicks in hold on !!
FN2 for family with dog is the best option, I was really impressed how fast it is at sprint vs EP3 with lower weight :D
th-cam.com/video/T6t1fyIXkUw/w-d-xo.html
The fn2, while being heavier, has shorter gear ratio and the VTEC engagement is 1000rpm sooner
Current model for sure - I love it’s stupid exterior! Took one for a test drive and it’s ridiculous! Haven’t stopped thinking about it since
I’m surprised they let you test drive one. The dealer I went to only put the windows down and wouldn’t let you inside the car
Soochul Song I’m in a small rural town in Australia, the dealer didn’t have much of a market to sell to so he was happy to let me take it out. I’ll definitely buy one through them now, just might be a few years!
Ep3 first K from Honda gentlemen. As all the cars are in the review. B-series TyreRs are legends yes, Matt is a car journalist so he is speaking to the current market… agreed Ep3 is the perfect benchmark, it is what further captured the #enthusias
I've owned a ep3 for 12 years and have to say
it's Still so much fun to drive as the day i got it !
Luke H i’ve had mine for 13 years & it still drives absolutely lovely!
Great work man! Honda best of all....love the sound of the naturally aspirated engine but the fk8 is just out of competition
When i was in the UK we had an ‘06 top end model civic hatchback and man i loved that thing
no EK9 and FD2..
bassicuk1986
So did you guys in England get the fn2 mugen? Cuz I'd seriously consider going there and getting one
Mcufre Yeah, they sold the FN2 in the UK. There's currently a White FN2 Mugen for sale in England at £5,990 and an even cleaner Red FN2 Mugen for sale at £7,220. There's also an FD2 Type R JDM import for £14,995 lol
Jdm only
not real mugens at that price im affraid. and as far as i am aware, mugens only came in championship white.
The new Type R is fantastic!
Duo Motovlog absolute beast of a motor.
Pity it looks like absolute dog - it's horrific.
Peter Lukats I like it✌️
I think it also looks really good
Duo Motovlog New type r is a shit
The latest civic type r get’s too much hate in my opinion the decine is the only thing I hate about the fk8
I own an EP3 Type-R and it's an absolutely amazing car
0:57 Vtec kicks in yooo
Vtec*
Dimitris Jim I just realised I’m really good at spelling 😆😆
@@BetomOfficial 😂😂
How interesting everyone voted the FN2 that would stop the longest but stoped the shortest. Amazing!
th-cam.com/video/T6t1fyIXkUw/w-d-xo.html
You mentioned hot hatches of the early 2000s but you forgot the VW r32 with it’s sick sounding VR6 with the screaming 240 horsepower and GT-R inspired all wheel drive system
The Honda ep3 on the left at 2:02 if you see from the smoke needs service before you drag race it! So its a bit unfair:)
I thought so too but looking again it looks more like water vapor. Never saw smoke in any other clips. Maybe they drag raced it cold to give it a better chance to win.
