Andrew, I know this was a year ago. But I really appreciated you sharing your thoughts and honest feelings about feeling like it was" almost hurting your feelings" the way you weren't quite "good enough"... with the sketch you were doing. I have been plagued with the same feelings recently. Watching you and hearing you of all people say that, somehow made me feel a little better. Thank you!!
I have just discovered your channel, and I had to pause this riveting video around the 20 minute mark to somehow write down everything I'd like to say.
Firstly, I would like to thank you for sharing the creative challenges that you, not only as an artist but as a growing individual, face - it is so easy to look at the incredible, seemingly perfected landscapes you paint and believe that this is the result of years of evolution towards your infallible technique and process. But to see that even as a seasoned professional in your given field, you have chosen to nudge your boundaries and scope of practice beyond where you feel comfortable, is in itself more encouraging and inspiring than you might know.
I am also greatly warmed by your high opinions and memories of your father and the strong values he instilled within you as a child that you hold so dear, even in your work today. His story of wanting to become a veterinarian and then delving into art is actually rather familiar to me (though the reverse situation in my case) and for that reason I am compelled to express how your father's interconnection between scientific principles and art (as many great artists have used) has motivated me further.
I have always, growing up, considered myself to have an aptitude for artistic thinking: creative writing, music, drawing and painting. However I would challenge myself to attempt to think more scientifically - including subjects I took in school - and actually ended up, though I had a goal to become a veterinarian, becoming a veterinary nurse just this last year. In a parallel manner to the way in which your father would learn anatomy for artistic benifit, I am going to try to further my knowledge in this heavily scientific field with a medium I have always loved: art. I did not work as hard in university as I could have as my motivations were elsewhere, but you have helped renew within me an excitement for not only animals, which of course I adore else I would not be in this profession, but for something that I was always less comfortable with - science.
Thank you for reading this sludgy, wordy mess if you have, and I hope you are continuing to share your innermost thoughts with the world!
And now a little further into the video I already have something more to comment on, lol.
That feeling of the challenge you've taken on "taunting" you, in your case sketching and in my case excelling in my profession, is indeed a product of not wanting to face our inner faults as perfectly imperfect human beings! It has been something I am tackling daily, but because of my Christian faith and walk with the Lord Jesus, I am beginning to understand that what I have within me is more than enough, and I need not compare my journey in life to someone who was designed to be entirely different to me!
Okay, I will henceforth refrain from excitedly babbling on here in the comment section each time you share something relatable. XD

I too am just starting my endeavor into sketching. I'm retired and am developing an interest in watercolor painting. After my initial efforts. it became apparent that drawing or sketching was a fundamental component of the foundation for developiong my proficiency in watercolor painting. Just watched your video and during
Covid19 have watched many of your TH-cams inspiring me so unbelievably. I am 75 years old have loved art since I was a young child. Another story of why I couldn’t pursue art after winning the art award getting out of junior high and in 2000 beginning oil painting. Won best landscape of show with my first oil painting and kept painting. I started taking workshops from some top national painters. Doing ok but my lack of drawing expertise has gotten me discouraged! I ordered and received my set of Tisch Daggers from Rosemary &Co. I feel like a kid again and am going to draw every day since I can’t go to the Y. Thank you for doing these videos to inspire the world. Got my sketch book out and will start tomorrow am and tie it in with my prayer/meditation time. Your video with your dad was one of the first I watched! Loved it! The Apple does not fall far from the tree(you and your dad!). Thank you! God Bless!
So glad you are drawing from images of horses , in their natural environment . Like the goats and cows they are a pray animal ie eyes on the side of their head . When the horse is right brain and they are in their fright , flight mode the tension around the mouth , eyes and with their tail upon the air well in fact their whole body , will be noticeable different . I have been drawing for a long time and always go back to it in one aspect or another but never really explored sketching to its full capacity. So glad to hear that drawing is such a large part of my artistic endeavours, at one point I was told that sketching would never get me any where in the art world. You are right, sketching is harder than painting because you only have on shade to bring 3D life to form. Painting you have all the different colors to mold the shapes. Seeing your skills close up, like how you "hatch" the hairs and texture was very useful. THANK YOU!
The way you look while you're drawing Andrew shows your passion. You are a part of the drawing. That passion makes it perfect to my believe. Time is related to everything else buth your passion. When I do my thing I even forget to eat, don't hear my wife calling me. Look at your dad, nothing can stop him and so are you to my honnest opinion.
I just discovered your channel/videos and as I'm watching this one on sketching and drawing, you're talkinga about listening to inspirational/motivational books. I had to smile as I am doing a year long coaching program in which basically we work on becoming the best version of ourselves we can be, and then helping others do the same. So Good They Can't Ignore You is just one of the many books the program asks us to read. I feel that you would really resonate with this coaching program, which many people take just to work on themselves even if they have no interest in coaching others. Also though, it was just another 'sign' from the universe that getting back into painting and finding your videos is in alignment with my goals and aspirations. Thank you for your beautiful work as an artist and the beauty in your soul that so effortlessly shines through.

thanks for the very important reminder - drawing is such a great thinking activity - I often do some sketching before painting, but obviously not enough, and if a painting is a failure, it's because I jumped into the painting too soon. It even informs me of color choices because I've worked out tone, but also where the color flows within the painting, thanks!
So much of what you talked about in this first episode resonated; the negative self talk, the need for repetition and practice, the continued commitment... I find what happens to me a lot, because I’m trying to learn my craft around a full-time job and other life commitments, is that I always have this underlying anxiety every time I enter the studio that I have to make my time count and the only way to do that is to create something spectacular or it’s been a waste. My greatest challenge has been embracing the fact that no matter what I do in there, its brilliant because I’m learning and improving. Hearing your thoughts really crystallized that for me and also makes me feel less like a failure, if that makes sense. Anyway Andrew thanks again for another awesome video. I don’t know how you do it? What you’re accomplishing every day blows my mind!

I always think going to the gym as well is needed like yourself , pencils and brushes don’t build muscle but a healthy body is a great foundation for everything else .

Andrew - A HUGE g-heart felt thank you for this inspirational video. Even though I am on in my years and I pray that I would have 10,000 hrs to give to practice. That said any time spent with the art of drawing and taking your words and also the words of you fathers seriously, we can all improve greatly, and also pass these videos on to the younger artists we might have in our lives that you can help with their "Art Endeavors of Sketching and Painting". I know myself I know a few and most of our schools in my area don't have these types of classes to provide to the students. How truly blessed your life has been.

Andrew, this is a good idea. I have been drawing since I could pick up a pencil. I draw, sketch and make notes every day. I think in 2011 there was a break through in my sketching. Something happened in that year, after 40 years at it. I think I came to my own place in art. So, the last 10 years has been great, because I know who I am in my art work.
I got into painting because my drawing skills are weak. Now I realize how important drawing is and why it makes for a better painting. Animals are my passion and I'd like to make my paintings
more life like by understanding the anatomy thru drawing. I will set time each day to practice drawing. You're the best Andrew!

Interestingly i have.seen people who cant draw a stitch simply draw what they want to paint and then their work comes out complete and beautifully done.
Almost a year ago, I dedicated at least one hour each day to drawing. I use a bound sketchbook and I date each page. You are so right about the improvements. Many things have changed in my work and life.

I have painted pet portraits for many years, but life took an unfortunate turn and I have gotten away from painting all together.

Here are some of my tips, being a rather practiced drawing artist. I paint also, but graphite is a love of mine that I've been thinking of spending more time on. Use different tools. Go purchase some graphite sticks, not pencils, just the solid stick, where your fingers actually come into contact with the medium. Sticks have a softer, smoother feel on the paper, and can blend like a dream if high enough in quality. The feel and smell of it will add a layer to the experience. Pure graphite comes in different shapes, so play around with those to develop textures. Try blending with cotton balls, cotton swabs, or blending stumps or even natural sponge for unique effects. The kneaded rubber eraser is excellent for working dimension, depth, highlights and corrections, and it doesn't leave a residue on the paper, unlike the solid sort. Try a variety of papers, some with a different weights, some with a rougher or lighter tooth. Each offers its own look to the finished product. These are ways to fall in love with drawing, so that it doesn't feel so much like a chore. A properly blended, soft wash of graphite can be as satisfying as a gorgeous blend of color on canvas. Some of my drawings were in an art show and I can think of a couple of dynamic responses that people had to the drama and romance of a the graphite images. As a matter of fact, my current masterpiece is in graphite. It's worth it; a truly rewarding venture.
Those horses are fantastic- reminds me a lot of the artist Richard Stone Reeves. Brilliant!!!!!

Nice to see this as it's something I believe in. I am a moderator in the drawing forum of a popular art website and have had my work published. It's important for people to realize that talent isn't a requirement for drawing - it's a skill like anything else. It requires practice and patience but with dedication it's amazing to see the improvements that can come quickly. One thing you didn't mention is the importance of paper. All paper is different - all have pros and cons. Not all sketch pads are the same by any means. In fact I import my paper from the UK as I'm particular and my favorite type isn't available in the US. I was glad to see you get away from using your finger to blend because of the oils. Think of how the cops lift fingerprints - graphite powder. You can find a lovely fingerprint indelibly set in your drawing using fingers. And one last observation - the lighter the grade of graphite the more clay is mixed with it so the harder it is. Harder graphite can easily emboss paper which cannot be removed or covered.

Concur! Fingers are a definite ‘no-no’. Also - given that your main technique is painting... you already have one of the best blending tools - trim down some old discarded brushes and see how they go; I recently purchased some cheap 1/8” flat taklon brushes and trimmed them down to about 3 or 4 mm for detailed blending (seperate brushes for graphite, charcoal and white charcoal) - and a 1/4” for more general work...
As to blending, that would be a great topic for your videos, different blending tools with the differences in how they leave marks (smudges). Paper types are also important with the blending tool choices.
Hello Andrea. I adore Mellotex and have used it exclusively for years. It is a nice white, smooth surface but erases wonderfully. Unfortunately it is no longer available. In talking with Mike Sibley he recommended Conqueror as having the same characteristics as Mellotex but he likes it even better. So I'm about to give it a go.
I follow a handful of artists like Cesar Santos, James Gurney and you of course. What I find is we need other artists in our lives to motivate and encourage us. You are doing an outstanding job of that. I think you have convinced me to finally pick up pencil and start drawing and painting again. One thing you may not have experienced in your life is the loss of a skill. I hope there is some muscle memory at leased to make things a little easier.

Your saying about that inner negative voice is so true.....Mentioning those artists I do as well, as I bet many other people do too.....Thanks for the video was really awesome and inspiring.......I started my art passion just a year ago after many years since my 20' (am 45 now) thinking I could NOT DO ART... I love Pastel Portraits as well....I read of the great Masters like Bronzino, Tintoretto, of course MichealAngelo etc etc etc......I figured to Master Pastel and Icon Portraiture I needed to stop for a bit and have just been putting in hours a day in my sketchbooks with pencil and charcoal. Fascinated by Sabin Howard's Drawing Style and Sculptures and have just started one of his 5 week online courses.....In these past 4 1/2 months the improvements have been nothing short of astounding. It takes a GREAT amount of Guts, Determination, Patience and Pure Will to be a great draughtsman.....Thanks for the Videos and Much continued Success....

Interestingly enough, it was watching one of your videos where you were doing a graphite sketch to plan for a painting that really made it click for me how much I have stagnated with my drawing skills once I started painting and how much it was hindering my growth. I've since been trying to sketch and draw more. First, by really taking my time when drawing my outlines and guidelines for a painting and then trying to have times where I just sketch with an aim to focus on shapes and values and understanding the form. I'm already seeing how helpful it's going to be when it comes to anatomy in particular and just developing my accuracy. Love that you are doing a series on this. Sometimes, just listening to you talk about your own work ethic and practices is what I need most. Especially when depression is looming and telling me that I'll never be able to make it. Your talks remind me that I can, but most importantly, they tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I need to be doing differently. Thank you Andrew. You and this channel is a light in my battle against the darkness of depression right now. I greatly appreciate it.
What works? What is not working, and what if? Three great questions. I am grateful you voiced those three. I had not realized I was thinking this way and then you said it aloud; and bang! These are the three best tidbits of moving forward with my art. And the "What if?" opens the door to originality and improvement. I watched this video three times and on the third view (while painting this morning) those three questions stood out as the basics of gaining competency. Great stuff Andrew.

I decided that I needed to have a still life or long drawing so I always have something to work on (and finish-like your Dad said).
I loved what you said about setting a daily goal. I doubt I will live another 17 yrs but already I have _made a decision_ to focus on drawing first but always to remember what excited me before it was drilled into me that you can't make a living painting…
A lovely book is called, "The Artist's Way" and it helped me to recognize where all that negative self-talk came from and where it needs to go!

I design buildings and landscapes have been for 30+ years -- your point about "only drawing to explore design or relationships" has become my norm. To my credit I still design on paper first but never get to the level of even your simplest sketch before I dive for CAD .. this has inspired me to revisit drawing my designs and architecture around me-- thanks.

Thank you for this Andrew! I knew I don't draw enough at all! Usually I'll just quickly rough draft my image out then right to painting. Yet, I do enjoy the drawing process, but don't. crazy.I LOVE this video....listening to you and watching you draw is MAGICAL!!

Absolutely amazing sketches, and very appreciative of you sharing real time thought processes! I have also recently decided to dedicate non negotiable time each week for drawing, starting small to keep burn out away. I'm pretty excited to see where this leads! Thank you for being you!
Thank you for sharing this with us. It is a wonderful idea, and has encouraged me to start drawing more often. I am just beginning to work with painting and drawing after years of rearing family, going through a 20 year illness. So now I'm 73, and still want to learn more and enjoy being involved with art.
