I have the opposite problem, i exclusively make art for myself but that hinders me from showing my art online, being consistent and having any profit from it .-. Also I really like how you connected the blocky brushstrokes into smoother ones by the end. I think its time for me to subscribe to your patreon

I was about the say the same thing! I have to make art for myself otherwise I start to hate idea of making anything. The only exception is I enjoy making and sometimes posting fanart related illustrations but its always from franchises that I love or enjoy. Yes it means my audience grows at a snails pace but I’ve come to terms with that for the sake of my mental health

@@hellodelightfulrando same. I mainly posted calligraphy but stopped because I was tired of the process of posting. I left Insta then a few months later, started doing calligraphy again and decided not to post anymore. Now I get joy out of the simple act of writing calligraphy. And that is a beautiful thing. Same with my art. I do it just for myself and occasionally share it with friends and family. And like you, it was all for the sake of my mental health. Keep doing what works for you. 💪💪

I started learning digital art almost 2 years ago. But I did connect into communities and that has helped me to grow faster then what I could on my own. Simply because I ask for honest feedback and I dont post the things that I dont like OR my smaller studies. If you don't compare yourself with other artist that have studied more hours and more years you will be fine, study from them learn from their styles, but dont compare. Also dont expect recognition on instagram or any other social platform because almost nobody comments or likes, except if you niche into certain fan art like a comment above.

Same here. I post in an online gallery, but it's mainly just to get shareable links to show close friends. I don't really curate the page to be presentable or to have viral potential. I do sometimes think it would be fun to be able to do it for a living, but I definitely appreciate the benefit of not having to play the game of social media.

You are right on the money with your thoughts. I switched from a career in art to a Healthcare career when I felt art lost its enjoyment. For almost 15 years, I hardly touched it until I bought some canvas and brushes on an impulse buy. Now I am painting again in my spare time and rediscovering the joy in art. I do it for me, for practice and occasionally will sell a little piece if someone likes it. Those who can stick with it, deserve nothing but applause. It can't be an easy way to make a living. Keep up the great work and the interesting videos. I will share your auction with my DeLorean owners group to see if we can get some more exposure for you.

You're my absolute favorite oil painting TH-camr. Stay healthy and sane in this crazy world we're living in.
I've just reached the stage where people are asking me to paint things I'm not interested in painting, for money of course. Luckily I'm not proficient in painting babies and pets so I can decline without any inner turmoil. But I know that if I want to start making money off my paintings I'm going to have to paint things that don't appeal to me. And that's a bummer.

Thank you very much for bringing up this. As a hobbyist artist who was drawing all their life I completely stopped drawing after some time of posting art online. I just couldn't do it. Posting online and drawing only for that reason has killed my will to draw. But now, 2 years after that, I'm starting to pick up pencil again. But this time I'm drawing only the things I like. And no posting whatsoever. Whoever is reading this and feeling like they are on verge of quitting drawing - please start drawing for yourself and don't post. And even if you quit - don't worry, it just means you needed that rest. You might come back to it later, just as I did, although I felt that I would never ever draw again and that is after 20 years of drawing. So good luck everybody and please take care of yourselves!

I'm late, but thank you! I lost my father to Parkinson's after he battled with it for 13 years, and it means a lot to have other people that want to further research. I always appreciate your honesty when it comes to motivations. For about a year I was off social media completely. In that time I was keeping a sketchbook and working in weekly. The drawings and paintings were definitely for me at that time because I was essentially showing them to no one. However, since then, I’ve come back to social and post my work regularly, as well as feel the need to create more work to post more often. It is such a trap trying to balance the marketing of yourself and the purity of the work you’re doing.

I'm not a very creative person, but I love watching artists create things. It's the reason I'm subscribed to so many art channels on TH-cam. It makes me sad when artists have to do things that they wouldn't normally, do just to survive. However, I don't think this is a new issue because I have to think even during the times of Leonardo DaVinci and Michelangelo, when they lived off their commissions, they must have found themselves in a similar position where they had to create what other people wanted them to do in order to survive.

same with musicians. i know a few who studied traditionally, and the deep analysis, study, practice made it hard for them to enjoy music anymore. (especially anything modern). it's like it made everything so analytical that it tore out the feeling/love/appreciation way of listening. : (

I love peeking into other's sketch books, it's like getting a glimpse into a part of their soul. Every time I watch one of your vids, I get inspired to learn about the how and why of color blending, like "why did you start with a lighter blue just to cover it with a dark for the background".

  • @Ellary_Rosewood
    @Ellary_Rosewood 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

This is such a wonderful video with a topic that really needs to be discussed more. As an artist and creative, I often get caught up in that idea of "I'm not growing fast enough", mostly because I've been working hard in hopes of making a living doing what I love. But honestly, maybe the fact that it's taking a longer time is a good thing. I only create what I want to create and to do the things that bring me joy. If others also find joy in my work, then that's wonderful. But at the end of the day, I want to create the things that are meaningful to me and share what I enjoy and am passionate about. I've always wanted to stay true to myself, and I think I should be proud of that, even though at the moment I'm not making a living through my work just yet. So many people have tried to tell me "Why don't you do this? People like this stuff and you'll get more likes". It always makes me angry and frustrates me. I don't want that for myself. I want to stay true to who I am. ❤️

I completely understand this in a very deep level. I literally stopped posting my personal work online very recently, firstly because of art theft (which sucks on its own), but also because of the fact I realized that what I paint for myself is for *me*, not for my friends to see, not to show the internet. Realizing I don't need no ones validation on my personal work was really mind-blowing and freeing. Nowadays I've been only posting my commissioned work, and that's all that I need both as a showcase of my art for people who want to commission something and as "art for others to see online". Same goes for my sketchbook, it became a safe haven for me to draw whatever I want and however I want without the pressure of having to show it to people online.

Few of my friends said they love it and that i should let others see it so i started posting online and it was fun in the beginning.. soon people started advising me on how to set up my posting schedule, do art challenges and hashtags etc and it just seemed to hinder my process of creating so i stopped. now i post super randomly, only when i feel like and it is still enjoyable to me. it's more like a memory archive of my art and acts as sort of a portfolio in case someone wants to see. ;)
long story short, there's something magical about creating for yourself from your soul. it feels like a part of you and acts as an inpiration to create more. at least for me..

Same actually, I just started drawing this year last May to be exact and since then I'll be posting some of my drawings on my social media because I thought it would be fun to see my art journey later, and yes I usually come back there and it makes me happy🤗

Love it. I was pretty jazzed about Back to the Future as a kid as well. Love it even more that you’re auctioning it for a great cause. Fantastic work (as always). Keep it up! I would, personally love to see more of this type of content. It’s an honest reflection of you as a person and the things that excite you, while still showcasing your amazing talent. And it’s incredibly cool to watch you paint… so there’s that. Happy Holidays all.

You're describing workhorses vs unicorns. Workhorses put food on the table and unicorns bring joy. I love seeing other people's unicorns

I also use a sketchbook for art just for me. I also use it as a place for me to "journal" but in painting or drawing. Family and friends do not understand this and think I should only be creating art to make money. "You can't sell a sketchbook!" , if often said to me. It is really frustrating when you just want to draw for yourself and no one understands. Thank you so much for this inspiring video!

    Alipay,
What a great cause and an awesome painting.
I really like your movie related art.
Watching your painting, it starts out looking like an abstract with the colors but it always looks great when it all comes together.
Maybe that’s why my paintings look like they do.
Need to break down the color and shades of the paint.
    I will try.

Yes, you were right about creating art for yourself. Honestly, I've already loosing my passion in art, I always dissatisfied with the result whenever I paint or draw. Maybe, I'm trying hard to focus on likes and fame instead enjoying the process of creating the art.
Now, you've open my eyes and its time to create and enjoy again what I used to do. Thanks for your insight and word Alpay.

Hey Alpey love your paintings and honest thoughts. I trained in illustration and fine art and haven't made any art in over 15years, I lost the early love that I had for it as a kid who drew and painted happily. But it seemed going through education and my work being assessed for qualifications diminished my creativity and approval from others made me put down the paintbrushes and pencils. I feel I've lost my skills sadly and I was pretty good at it X good luck with your auction that's great what you're doing in giving, but you give so much while you paint also x

Yes!!! I only just started making new work in the last month that was for me, and to not overthink and just have fun! It had been about two years of commission work before that…and I was really in a place where I felt a bit stuck creatively. Oufff! So I can’t tell you how much I agree with the sentiments you had in this video, it’s so important to do this as an artist🙏 really solidified things for me again, hearing you say it, so thank you, great work man! And Great video! 👌

So true. I use my sketchbook... whether traditional or digital... as a way to relax and get away from stress. I work as a graphic artist and web developer and after staring at code or layouts all day... drawing or painting in my sketchbooks is relaxation. I'd love to make money on the side but all in all... I'm too busy with that and just need time to do something relaxing for myself...

I have to make art for myself. The best compromise is that sometimes I will make fanart or fanart related illustrations and those usually get more traction that any of my random OCs. My platforms grow at snails pace but it has definitely helped me stay clear of burn out and depressing thoughts which is most important for me. I have however made some good friends thanks to the internet and being apart of online communities, and thanks to their support I opened up for commissions for the first time and while not all of my spaces got booked, I still got 3/5 slots filled thanks to them. It’s definitely boosted my confidence and my desire to grow my art skills way more than billions likes ever could

I'm very precise about my tastes, and very exigent about things I like, my creative block comes from this : wanting to have ideas and create things that I'm really interested, so actually it's the opposite problem
I don't enjoy copying artworks or references, I enjoy a fun and surprising story showing through in a well executed picture, with mystery and weirdness, that's at the same time very precise and very hard to accomplish...
Enjoying the idea of getting there is also a great solution

Man, I used to do portraits only for compliments, I would go on discord, on to the most famous discord server, lofi girl server, and wait in the art channel, and I was drawing everyday just to go on to discord to get a compliment, and completely stoped when I stoped reserving compliments, and while I was laying in bed, I thought about it, and I realized that everything I drew was a lie, but I’ve gotten so much better, I am now drawing completely for myself, and couldn’t be happier.

I prefer the art you make for yourself rather than the portraits of women. It is more complex in emotion, brushwork and lighting. Sometimes it is more fulfilling to sell to the right customers rather than to the easier customers, like gourmet foods rather than fast foods. Looking forward to seeing more sketchbook paintings and experiments.
