Listening to you chatter while drawing has inspired me. I'm 80 years old and am loosing my sight which has gotten in the way of doing portraits, but i do have hope with landscapes. Watching you sketch has opened a new hope for me. I can see values better than color and am looking forward to going back to drawing. Ten thousand hours will be my goal, if I live that long, and I'm looking to the future. After all, isn't that what life is all about.

Hi Andrew, can I give you some of my experience with those materials?
A paper with less tooth will allow for a smother transitioning and shadows, just be mindful the paper stump will “damage” the paper so much faster too.
And the oils of our skin will definitely make it harder for the graphite or charcoals to adhere or erase if you smudge.
Even holding the paper with the other hand on a area yet to be worked on is a bad idea.
Now, as I said before, I've been drawing for such a long time, but always for my own enjoyment, never professionally and without consistency, so I feel really far away from being a master, and that’s ok for me.
But with your amazing skills and will to put up to the challenge, you will get to a incredible level of perfection way sooner than you expect.
Don’t bother with mean or clueless comments saying you’re not being honest, they’re probably just jealous about your skill level...
    Thank you Andrew!

Andrew Tischler rather then using a blending stump and possibly damaging the paper. Try using paint brushes or cotton swabs. Both do wonders with graphite.

    • @corakiart
      @corakiart 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

William Raymond I tried a cotton swab. Didn’t work. There are various sizes of blending stumps. I find the difference interesting. The smaller sized stump, is harder. The larger ones for some reason is softer. I use for drawing and pastel. I suppose different brands may have different traits, too. In addition the way you hold it makes a difference. Sideways makes a softer mark. Straight on like a pencil makes a harder mark. Or it is just my 10k hours delirium making me crazy.🤪

Hi Andrew, Your 10,000 hour sketch endeavour is a wonderful commitment. To me it serves to change who you are, how you use your time, your habitual self. It will be come automatic and it will bring mastery. The number of hours is not what it's about and serves to create a goal that is open-ended. I am going to join on but am not quite ready to commit schedule-wise.... I'm glad to have come across your endeavour and you inspire me... thank you.

Hi Andrew ... when you have completed a session such as this one, do you ever just sit and listen to it and realise how much information you are actually disseminating? I just watched this session mesmerised (a) by what you were drawing and (b) by what you were saying; for me, the combination of these two inputs is totally absorbing. I haven't been doing artwork full-time for very long ... maybe only a year. But after 60 years of photography combined with 45 years of filmmaking, there's a lot going on in there that I wasn't aware of. So, I suspect that SketchEndeavour can offer far more than the process of improving drawing technique. It is, in effect, a form of therapy that is quite remarkable. For me at least, it improves concentration, stimulates recall, and gives my mind time to just relax. Most importantly, it stimulates brain function generally which is so critical as we age. So, once again, many thanks. I was going to ask about the pencils you use, but that can wait.

I’ve been reading all the comments from a year ago. All of them complimentary. I have been watching you for a longtime and feel the need to tell you I think you are a master artist. At my age (88), I have been painting 60 years, have a degree in art education with 66 graduate hours. And with all that along with gallery sales and portrait commissions, I will never be as good an artist as you are.

Another good video, Andrew. A couple things I thought to mention for the benefit of people just starting out with graphite. New drawers tend to shy away from darks but should notice how drawings come alive when the darks are built up to a certain level and beyond. Andrew does this through working in layers. You mentioned this in passing but too much tooth is not ideal for most people. Most graphite artists I know work on smooth paper surfaces. In general there are cold pressed watercolor paper (rough), vellum (slightly toothy), smooth or plate. All have pros and cons as well as differing by brand. Plate is great for details but darks are very difficult to achieve. Smooth or hot pressed is probably the most preferred by folks. Weight is also an issue as is the content with 100% rag (cotton) being the most archival. Also erasing is almost an art form unto itself. Paper is so easily damaged by incorrect or over aggressive erasing which also depends on the eraser. I usually recommend either BluTack or a kneaded eraser. BluTack is slightly sticky so it lifts the graphite more easily by dabbing or rolling. I find holding a regular kneaded eraser in my non-dominant hand while drawing keeps it warm and also slightly tacky so it forms and lifts better. Just some thoughts ...

Thank you Andrew, you are really inspiring. They say it takes 21 days to create a habit. This is an excellent way to start, especially for those who find the 10 000 hours daunting. (Ten thousand hours is symbolic! Pretty obvious I think) I believe (and teach) that if it is easy, then you're not learning! Don't get stuck in a rut! You need to push yourself just that little bit harder every time to create or learn something new, different, inspiring. I too am the type who says - "All in ..or why bother!" 10 000 hours... let do this!

You can spend a lifetime drawing and still have somewhere to go. I have gone years between drawing and not drawing. The meat of the matter to "exercise" is consistent and regular drawing. Andrew thanks so much for the true elements of mastery... Like putting in the time. I have discovered a 2nd element needed for the time element to really work. That is FOCUS. Some refer to it as "quality" time. Christians interpret Jesus saying about needing the faith of a mustard seed, as we only need a little faith to work wonders. That was not his meaning at all. The mustard seed is tiny yet one of the most strongest potent of flavor or a condensed but very focused thing...does that make sense? I hate bearing bad news, but a "little" faith will not allow you to move a mountain or walk on water. 15 minutes of focused sketch work will be better than 2 hrs of flaky work, where we're youtube surfing chatting on Twitter and also trying to sketch at the same time. Your ability to focus is the equivalence of your paycheck.

After years in a non-art related career, I have just begun to pick up the pencil again. Through the years I've painted with oils and watercolors for enjoyment, but pencil has always been my favorite. From my early years in art class, one instruction from my instructor has stuck with me..."use short, diagonal overlapping lines." When sketching, if I begin to start getting too loose with my strokes, I always revert back to that advice. Loving your comments and sketching advice and ideas!

By the time you are in your 50's, this won't be called "TH-cam" anymore ;)
As you said in the first video/comment, I think we're on the same page. I appreciate you elaborating and explaining. Ironically, I find it funny that folks who blanch at a 17-year commitment have no qualms about going and getting a 30-year mortgage. I understand your motivation now.
You make a great point regarding Day 12 where you were sick. This is where your commitment comes in. As with writers, the difference between professionals and dreamers is, professionals don't wait for inspiration. They don't wait for the right moment. They don't "not write" just because they aren't in the right mood or frame of mind (or feeling perfect). They sit down and write. You do this for a living. Many of us arm-chair artist/hobbyists can sit back and criticize and nitpick the smallest thing you put on TH-cam (and many will always do that no matter what you produce). But sitting down and doing the drawing even when not feeling well is what makes you a professional (in my eyes). As Demartini told you, '...that's what it will take.'
On the flip-side of the coin, listen to your wife when she says you're over-doing it! ;)

It's truly amazing how fast 17 years can just fly by. And just think, you committed 2 hours a day to that. For the nay sayers, in 17 years are you going to be celebrating achieving master level, or questioning why you just didn't do it?
Thank you for this lesson! You brought up important points about questioning your commitment in relation to your goal, trying out different line techniques for each drawing, being mindful of what your using, asking questions about what's working/not/what if, and finally thinking about what you get out of it.
So from one crazy meticulous to another, thank you for bringing up a topic that challenges all of us to understand what commitment to being a master looks like and how not to be afraid of pushing your skill level forward. Cheers!

A level of "competence" is a worthy goal. Knowing and understanding the fundamentals is essential and practice brings the competence. I am happy knowing that I will not ever be the "best" painter; my satisfaction comes from my own delight in my work, my feeling of progress and the compliments I get from those who like my work. Not everyone is going to like my work but as long as I get the respite from the day to day work life painting gives me and my personal realization of improvement I am satisfied. In this case the journey really is the joy, not arriving at a destination.

I remember in college that a teacher said that you have to draw when your sick, you have to draw when you don't feel like drawing. You have to draw, draw, draw.
I used to think that I'd get to a point and understand everything. I'd be an art jedi, but I always learn something new with whatever I do. Sure you'll finish but it's about what happens on the way to the end.
Right now I'm combining every medium and creating a few new one to make a videogame based of an idea I had when I was 16 years old - 1986. I had to wait for, create and help create the tools to make it. I never stopped drawing. Nowadays, drawing is not only on paper it's also translated into polygons than form 3D forms and back again with 3D printing.
No the less you inspire me to know that there are many of us that know the value of out foundation. What I do is in part, dedicated to artists like you.
As for the drawing, I would stay away from using the paper stump as that will flatten out your drawing by eliminating the texture and form you have made with the build-up from your pencil strokes. It takes long to make possibly - depending on how much coffee you've had. But your drawings will have a depth that is truly dimensional. Rotating your paper is key too. Keeping the paper stationary can make the drawing less dynamic. basically you rotate the drawing and lay down your strokes as you do to build up your mass and form. You keep the same light pressure on the paper. You can actually just use one pencil to do this. Eventually the strokes will build-up your value and form.
It's not something that is done fast but It does yield photo-real illustrations.

But, entering in painting with a strong drawing background, gave me faster results. My teacher said that I was way beyond my classmates, even in my second painting. Honestly, oil painting felt like a very humbling experience, because learning a new thing is sometimes uncomfortable, when you already have other areas well developed

Sketching has always been one of those things I do only when I have to to lay out a painting; it doesn't come easy to me. A lot of what you speak to in these videos resonated with me and I asked myself, "You're not afraid of a paint brush, what is it about a pencil that sends me running?" I listened to my honest reply, "Because you're not comfortable with it." I actually was proud of myself for not saying it was because I can't or I'm not good at it. I realize from my painting that, in order to be "comfortable" with anything, you have to get to know it or understand it and, like you said, it's a deliberate commitment to get there. While I can't commit to 2 hours a day, that's okay, I'm doing what I can each day whenever or wherever I can. I always have a painting in progress in my studio but now, I also have my sketch pad lying around the house so that I see it and remember, oh yeah, I've got to do this because Andrew challenged me so, sir, thank you for that and all you do to help all of us realize our full potential as artists. I'm stepping back into painting after recently becoming an empty nester so I have plenty to learn so please, keep these videos coming!

One of the best things you do when you upload a video is you don't place pressure on a person who might what to draw or paint or move in that direction and yea I think you're a very good artist. I enjoy the balance and honesty of what I would say is a teaching lesson from you. We need that in a world that promotes lies and alternative facts, so I'll continue watching.

Hi Andrew, I am from the Netherlands, and a big fan of yours.
Since the first video of the “Sketchendeavour” I am drawing every day. Most of the time I draw a “BN’er” ( in Dutch translated: “famous Dutch people”) I pause the TV, and just draw. Then I let people guess who it is… I’ve lot’s of fun doing this! Portraits as you know are not the most easy to draw or paint. Thanks for all your videos Andrew, you’re my favourite!!!

Thank you for this talk and the opportunity to watch your work! I feel that now I'm on my own "next level path" to master art, to be better and better. Like you've said there's always something to improve in art, in ourselves. I'm not a professional artist, but I think the most important is that art makes my life richer, joyful. That feeling, when I can share my work with people and be happy and grateful for this talent given me from above. can't be compared to anything in this world :-)
Good luck to you with your artist path! :-)

I' m learning to do oil paintings.
I've had so many creative ideas come to me that I didn't know what project to start first.
I've in the process of writing & illustrating for a children storybook & film animation.
One of my characters is unicorns, this horse tutorial is helpful & studying horse anatomy.
I hope one day my storybook will be published when I'm finished.
You are never too old too start creating art, and I'm 45.
I learned a lot from your youtube videos! oil techniques & supplies.

I started sketching again the day after your first episode. It just made great sense for me, as an artist to improve my skill level, for creating the “bones” of my subjects. Oddly enough, my interest is usually abstraction. The day after my commitment to sketching daily, I felt my ability to see shift. My commitment is for an hour because I’m 68. When I thought about things I’ve squandered time on, the investment felt easy. Thank you for this challenge, Andrew! It’s an amazing inspiration. I have learned so much from your videos!

I just tought, a daily commitment to improve my art.
    It's been years since I didn't draw.
I'm just starting again, and I want to do everything I can to improve.
And this was so motivating. Your work is amazing by the way.

Andrew - a simple thank you. To the point - as a beginner painter, I had been getting increasingly frustrated over the lack of time I had to ever paint, mainly due to work hours. Almost to the point of giving up the whole thing. Because painting and artistic creation should not be frustrating, but the opposite as a hobby. But then, your #sketchendeavour TH-cam video changed all of that in almost an instant. You are so accomplished as a painter, I was surprised you would dedicate so much time each day to drawing. But I had read so many times over, drawing will really help your painting. Then you cracked open the code I had been missing all along. It is difficult to cart around paint and supplies on a day to day basis going to work. But - drawing takes such minimal supplies with some pencils, and sketchbook, maybe an eraser, those could be literally brought anywhere, and used anywhere. I am proud to say, entirely thanks to you, I have not missed a day of sketching, with my goal of at least 20 minutes per day. In reality, I usually spend closer to an hour, and I squeeze it in before work, or at lunch. And you words so resonated..."this time is non negotiable", and "don't let anything else get in the way". It made me realize I deserve this time for myself. And am so much happier now. The frustration has gone. And I have managed to fit a few hours of painting in as well. I really do feel you have triggered something that for me, has set a new course on a life long journey of being the best artist I can be. At this late stage of just beginning to paint (age 58), it is pretty cool to feel something new to have discovered. I thank you again for taking the time in your life to help myself and others. You are "Da Man".

I absolutely love what you are communicating to help move us forward as artists. I joined your challenge. I have been painting for many many years, but must admit I am challenged by my draftsmanship. I never had formal drawing and to me it shows when I am focused on specific shapes. I am starting over with basic shapes, watching drawing videos, etc. I own most of the drawing tools, but honestly have not committed to using them daily. Being afraid to show my drawings, I have not posted yet. My other challenge seems to be scheduling so adding this to the mix, my commitment is switching up my day......but needed and welcomed.
I have a similar story as your Dads “do it anyway, act as if” attitude. I loved your interview with Dad and admired his tenacity.
    You’re great!

Amazing art and video as usual Andrew! You are doing a great service providing your teaching and knowledge gained through your years as a pro. Your comment on 'deliberate practice' resonates with me. I think focused practice, mindful of each mark, trying different materials, different techniques, different subjects, even with your other hand - this is how to really benefit from the practice.

loved it!! I'm watching you with flu today haha I love the way you explain so succinctly and your voice is very nice to listen to also. I resonate with the things you say, I am at that point where I cannot not make art everyday or I would want to lay down and die. It's my obsession, but I still have a long way to go. Another point would be if someone is aspiring to master a certain style as well ! Many thanks for your inspiration xx

Awsome podcasts you have made!! And I love the 10 000 ours endeavour. You are of course not enforcing anyone to do this, and to me that is a given. Having ambitions and a concrete goal scare some people. If those who react negative to that, instead reflected on why they reactive negatively, they might end up freeing themselves instead of trying to limit others. Beacause of your initiative I have startet sketching now, everyday and decided to skip my negative experiences from younger days. It is such a relief!!!! Keep on making podcasts. I started listening to them, and I cannot stop listening to them. And I have such a boost painting now, listening to those podcasts similtanously. PS; I am norwegian, and apologize for miss-spellings.

Although I agree that it is up to the person how much they can do, I also think we have to look at our "drive through" culture. Anybody might want to play the piano, but nobody wants to learn to play the piano. I have been practicing Chinese medicine for 37 years and I think that for at least the first 10 years, I was still a learner. But even over the next 15 years after that, I was learning and improving. It's only after many years of practicing something that one sees how much they did improve over the many years. If practice "leeches the joy out of it" then maybe it isn't a thing you really like doing. I enjoyed every hour of all 37 years-even though I sometimes got frustrated and tired. Spend as much time as you can is the message Andrew is saying.

I have always had a God given ability and passion to exercise my artistic nature. However I maintained a somewhat rigorous schedule and had many family and community obligations that and way too many excuses for not making time to steward that ability. About a year ago I decided I was going to get serious about dedicating time to learn several mediums one of which was watercolor. I have spent 3 or 4 hours late at night, early morning doing just that. While I am definitely not there I feel alive with the challenge. I celebrated my 70th birthday on the 27th of February and while I have much regret over waiting so long to do this I feel revived even if I never capture the time I've wasted. I have always enjoyed drawing and portraiture. Each person is a one of a kind personality. When laying in the tonal values of a persons face I feel as if I'm sculpting them, capturing their essence in some ways interpreting their story. I love watching and listening to your videos. Thanks, Bill Kinsella, Artie and Mildreds kid from Brooklyn now in Morro Bay California.

    Hi Andrew
I really like this challenge. Even though I cannot commit to 2 hours a day, I feel it is important to do some time each day fitting it in with work, etc. When my children were studying violin, they always used to talk about doing the 10,000 hours and regular practise every day. I believe it really does work. Your drawings and commitment are inspiring! Thanks! Cheers😊

I love this endeavour Andrew, I always shy away from doing too much drawing, mainly just enough to get a line sketch on a canvas before painting lol. I have started this at 1hr a day and will post on instagram. As and owner/trainer of horses I can really see the difference in your drawings, you are really bringing them to life. I mainly paint horses so I am forcing myself to do flora and fauna to improve my backgrounds, but after seeing your horses I am thinking there is lots of room for improvement there too! As you know I have been following your channel since it started and I have to say you are the best thing that ever happened to you tube, Thank you !!

I am listening to your sketchendeavor series again to be inspired. One thing, though, 10,000 hours is quite a lofty goal to achieved especially for an older person. In the middle ages, 10,000 hours refers to a young person being trained in a craft. It's more about a concentrated effort to draw on a certain aspect of a subject. For example drawing portraits for a number of days or painting trees. And not simply to draw but to concentrate on values and planes on portraits or light and shadows to create volume on trees. I had hearing this over and over again in recent podcasts. As someone in my 60's that is what is more obtainable for me.
