Once again I realise how little I know, but this is perfect Andrew, I can’t thank you enough. It’s the behind the scenes work that really counts. I refer a lot of things to plastering, as it’s the only skill I’ve mastered (ish), always room for improvement. But if I haven’t done all the prep first, smashing out loose areas of wall, gluing taping cracks etc, then the plaster would fall off or just look terrible. So very insightful, and what I love, is I feel how genuine you are, and are not trying to deliberately hold back information that frustrates us novices. Awesome work buddy, can’t wait to see the finished painting. Have a great day 😃

I used to not pay attention to composition when I was in my first year of art in high school. Now in my second year it’s my top priority, and it makes me so happy when my composition is nice :) my teacher says that a good composition looks good from all angles too thanks so much for sharing I’m going to use your video for all my paintings and art from now on:))) thank you so much! 😁
I really appreciate the momentum you carry throughout your composition stage. I tend to drive myself crazy when composing particular scenes that have the least amount of direct reference. I’ll rabbit hole so bad, to the point where it’s almost impossible to even recognize if it’s pleasing to look at or not. Anyway man, I really appreciate you making your videos available like this.

This ended up being one of my favorite landscapes you've ever done. The richness of that foreground in contrast with the cloud covered mountains is off the chart. Spending all that time in prep work is well worth it.
I've been using photo shop in my paintings since 1997 and it is a wonderful tool to have. One thing I will never have is your discipline and patience to do the preliminary work. Nice video Andrew!

I’ve learnt more from you about painting than any other artist. It’s fair to even say that I still wouldn’t have painted a single painting had you not started your TH-cam channel.
Over and over I find myself leaning into these presentations, getting closer and closer to the image. The narrative skills here are some of the best I've ever heard. Andrew does a variation of a brilliant teaching technique I was exposed to many years ago. Seikichi Odo ( 1923 - 2002 ) was an Okinawa Karate master with whom I studied. His teaching technique, which I had never seen before, and that I found so valuable, was to set boundaries on an action so as to focus on success. He would show a simple action, over correct in each direction, and then say "Not this way, or this way...but THIS way". I see Andrew's thumbnail planning sketches as a variation of 'Not this way, or this way...but THIS way" I've seen sketchbook work before, but this is the first time I've thought of it in this way, and it changes the way I look at the work.
This is so good, Andrew! Composition is such an important part of any painting (or any artwork for that matter), but there is so little information on it. One can find all sort of information on colours, brushes, materials, etc., etc., but almost nobody talks about the composition. You are not just talking about it, not just explaining, you are showing, which is incredibly helpful. My man, you are the Steve Irwin of painting. I really appreciate how much emphasis you put on composition. This is what separates decent art from good art, and good art from the great. I've noticed that many amateur artists (and even some "professional" artists) seem to neglect composition, and focus most of their efforts on rendering more and more detail, as if that alone makes a great piece. A novice artist can easily get too caught up on JUST trying to recreate a realistic image or one with a lot of detail without considering the principles of composition. It wasn't until that I could draw realistic figures and objects that I realized that this alone was not enough if I wanted to create interesting, dramatic scenes. I began looking at some of my favorite images to understand why I was drawn to them so much - for example: Caspar David Friedrich was one of my favorite landscape painters BECAUSE he composes his paintings in such a way that they appear profound, atmospheric, poetic, and symbolic. That is what separated him from the common landscape painter, not just his technical skill at laying down the paint.
This is perfect! I do photography and Photoshop and I’m currently learning to oil paint using my photos as reference. Thank you so much! I can now use Photoshop on a whole new level! Thank you so much!

This is amazing and came out at the right time! I'm also working on a big project of an Indian rainy day and trying to perfect my composition. Already have three oil sketches and some heavily photoshopped photos. This method was followed by my own hero John Constable. He made numerous sketches before getting on with the final biggy. He didn't have photos but he had sketches and the method is the same. Your video makes me wanna look at mine and maybe repaint some areas. I don't want to be in a hurry on this one.
Andrew, Andrew, Andrew! I see the thumbnail sketches and think “ that’s neat”. Then I see the detailed pencil on watercolour paper and I think “ that’s a great drawing!” Then I get distracted by the plain air study and think:” that’s great looking “. Then I look away for a bit and when I come back I see an awesome painting ,,,, and then you say “ I’m happy with the COLOURSTUDY. Now I can start the painting.” That’s too much 😁 I don’t give a lot of feedback comments but that was just.... 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏

This was incredibly useful video!I've always underestimate the process of preparation for a painting and the work behind the great composition. After seeing from where you started and the end result, which was really far better then the first study, I'm simply amazed! Thank you for shearing this! I impatiently wait for every video you upload.
I prefer the first version - the one with the river on the left side. The painting is so calm when it's there and I love it becouse it matches what I'm looking for in real life. Kinda matches my soul. And it's different from what usually artists try to do -they are usually making the composition more dynamic. But look, there is a huge amount of beauty in that less dynamity too. I like how quiet the river is on that first version. Although you are kinda right - there is some blank space on the right then and feels pretty weird. But landscapes in real life aren't completly perfect so I think we can sometimes let our paintings be like them. However I love it no matter where the river is, your work is increadible!

This is so true👍👍... composing a painting is surely the key to a great image. This is a great tip. I have tried a composition using a few photos I took and mixed them to create a composition using sketchbook on my computer editing the image to my liking ...It surely helped...still painting it though... Your techniques have really helped me through a lot of paintings... The process of planing a painting with the 4+1 Thumbnail sketches and then a formal shadow study surely helps and then midway using the computer to workout a few glitches. Though I am a watercolorist your techniques have helped me do lesser blunders... Blunders do help in learning beyond 🙂

Hi Andrew, this has definitely opened my eyes up to the creative composition phase. Never thought of using photoshop to chop and change a reference image. Also I don’t usually go anywhere near as far in the planning stage especially with detailing a sketch and colour study as much as you. Seeing the results it is definitely worth the small trade off in time as I have fallen into the trap of changing the composition as I’m painting. Man I need to give up my 9-5 and just paint! Then I see the detailed pencil on watercolour paper and I think “ that’s a great drawing!” Then I get distracted by the plain air study and think:” that’s great looking “. Then I look away for a bit and when I come back I see an awesome painting ,,,, and then you say “ I’m happy with the COLOURSTUDY. Now I can start the painting.”

This was incredibly useful video!I've always underestimate the process of preparation for a painting and the work behind the great composition. After seeing from where you started and the end result, which was really far better then the first study, I'm simply amazed! Thank you for shearing this! I impatiently wait for every video you upload.
I prefer the first version - the one with the river on the left side. The painting is so calm when it's there and I love it becouse it matches what I'm looking for in real life. Kinda matches my soul. And it's different from what usually artists try to do -they are usually making the composition more dynamic. But look, there is a huge amount of beauty in that less dynamity too. I like how quiet the river is on that first version. Although you are kinda right - there is some blank space on the right then and feels pretty weird. But landscapes in real life aren't completly perfect so I think we can sometimes let our paintings be like them. However I love it no matter where the river is, your work is increadible!

This is so true👍👍... composing a painting is surely the key to a great image. This is a great tip. I have tried a composition using a few photos I took and mixed them to create a composition using sketchbook on my computer editing the image to my liking ...It surely helped...still painting it though... Your techniques have really helped me through a lot of paintings... The process of planing a painting with the 4+1 Thumbnail sketches and then a formal shadow study surely helps and then midway using the computer to workout a few glitches. Though I am a watercolorist your techniques have helped me do lesser blunders... Blunders do help in learning beyond 🙂

Hi Andrew, this has definitely opened my eyes up to the creative composition phase. Never thought of using photoshop to chop and change a reference image. Also I don’t usually go anywhere near as far in the planning stage especially with detailing a sketch and colour study as much as you. Seeing the results it is definitely worth the small trade off in time as I have fallen into the trap of changing the composition as I’m painting. Man I need to give up my 9-5 and just paint! Andrew, this a terrific video. I have no problem with the idea of adjusting a composition. I just don't know how to decide what changes to make.
I, somehow, thought that I could just skip that step...but NO! It is an important one, especially on bigger paintings. I did scrapped a few paintings for wanting to just dive into it to quickly. Thanks for your help!
