    Glad I found this video.
I started my golf obsession 18 years ago and very quickly started using Titleist forged MB irons that had DGS300´s.
Switched from these after two years for a set of TaylorMade RAC MBs with DGX100´s.
Really couldnt tell much difference distance-wise, maybe slightly lower ball-flight with X100s but also felt I could hit draw/fade easier with the S300s.
However, this was 8 years ago since I picked up a golf club and now Im right back into it again, Im going with the S300s: Im less flexible, a touch slower and no need to lean on iron shots!

I swing a 7 iron at 90-93mph recently fitted for S300’s I can play X100 but just feel over 18 or 36 holes repeatedly playing shots S300’s worked better for me and can swing more consistently and control my swing more.
    Great video as well 👌🏻

I was hitting R300 with crazy high spin rates, so got a fitting recently and the numbers pointed me towards P790 with X100 shafts.
I can now control the flight so much better and have picked up a good club and half to two clubs distance throughout the iron bag.
I would never never have dreamt of hitting this shaft without a numbers fitting, but 6 rounds in, I absolutely love them.

I'm playing R300 too. I hit the ball too high often. I'm scratch, but feel I should try X100 and maybe blades. I wants smaller faces. Do they feel "boardy" or just close to S300?

James, When I returned to golf the golf shop suggested irons with Matrix graphite shafts 65gm, regular. However much I tried I couldn't get along with them and was beginning to think about giving up altogether when someone suggested a club fitter in my area. The result having tried a lot of shafts and heads was a Steel Nippon Zelos 7 Stiff from 5 to PW with Zelos 8 in my 4 iron and Wedges. I am far from perfect but a lot better than I was, the rest can hopefully be solved by lessons. My advice to the older golfer is don't be afraid of a steel shaft or a stiff steel shaft, its about balance and control for me and I can feel where the club head is now, such a relief.

I went from a Uni-flex shaft on my old irons ('06 Big Bertha) to Project X 6.0 (X-Forged '18). And it has been remarkable how much of a positive difference it has made to my game! Consistency, feedback and feel!
I should also add that I swing my 7 iron at an average of 102mph.

I always used Dynamic Gold S300 shafts until recently. I've been in the gym regularly for almost 3 years now and as a result I've been fitted into X-Flex shafts across the board. My shafts now are X Flex KBS Tour 130 (1x soft stepped)! So they aren't true X Flex but.....almost!

I"d always used stiff graphite shafts in my irons, but the latest set I chose because of $$$ and they had regular shafts. Took a little getting used to, but I can make the ball do almost anything I want it to. As you say, it all comes down to feel. JM2C

I think tempo and feel are important factors. I have the swing speed and distance for X shafts but I play a mix of R300s and S300. I have a very slow take away (think of a Matsuyana or Freddy swing) and prefer the feel of the club lag for me. Shafts really are a preference so try them before you buy if you can! And some Tour Pros play regular shafts so its all up to what works for you!

I gamed S300s my whole life until I went for a Mizuno fitting last year with their swing DNA, they put me in the AMTX100 and straight away my issue with going left almost disappeared; my miss has gone from a snappy hook to a block and I'm happy to live with that, although my stock shot has progressed from a baby draw to straight-ish which has taken me longer to get used to, and I thought I'd lose some feel with an X but I can play all my feel shots without issue. Stoked I got fitted and made the change, 30 years of working it out myself was sorted in 30 minutes

I have used s300 and then I made a switch to the lz shafts 6.0. I did try the x100 in 718mb irons at a demo day. I have to say I prefer the feel of the x100 I said to the fitter that I felt more insync with my self and felt a lot better with the quality of my swing. So if I did a blind test I would say x100 all day for my self but to me for fitting it’s all about players feel. Not so much for numbers. If you have a half decent player and willing to work on your swing then a good golf coach is all you need to fix your numbers.

Interesting test. I have S300 shafts in one set, and X100 rifle shafts in another set (AP2s) I accidentally bent the shaft in the 7 iron in the rifle shafted AP2s but I´ve never really liked those anyway as the swing weight felt heavier. Putting a S300 in the AP2 7 iron made it feel much more playable as they seem to give me a higher launch. That might be just me that´s used to them but they definitely feel better to me.

If you play for fun, and are running out of the car to the first tee, or can't hit 60 balls on the range before each round starts, then DG 120 S300 all day long - that was the recommended fitted shaft by the computer on my new Mizuno Hot Metal Pros and that's what I went with - it's stiff enough and I carry my 5 iron 197yards at a weakened 24 degrees loft. If I was competing, and had time to warm up before each round, there isn't even a question, X shafts all day long. Why? - because they 100% are more controllable reducing excessive curvature and they are more consistent front to back yardage wise. My older clubs are Original Generation Titleist AP2s with Project X 6.5s (I really love that shaft). I never felt that shaft was stiff - it just works. What it does do is give me an exact repeatable carry distance on my irons - but that combo isn't long - but it is 100% repeatable. If money isn't an issue, I would actually encourage most people to go with new 'player' quality graphite shafts.

I got fitted for a KBS C-Taper S that's being hard-stepped. Reason being that I prefer the feel of a stiffer than stiff shaft, but with most models that means an increase in weight. This way, I get a stiffer shaft with the same weight - brilliant. Go get fitted!

I just got fitted for a set of irons this year (Mizuno MP-18 MMC). I used Mizuno's swing DNA shaft fitting device to get fit. I was using TT XP115 S300, and just lost the feel for the shaft. I don't hit really far, between 150 - 160 yard carry for a 7 iron. I was expecting to get fit into a Project Rifle, which is a shaft I had used in the past. To my surprise, I was fit for a NS Modus 3 105 in X. I was told it was because of my load characteristics, not the swing speed as to why the X was suggested. I tried the Modus 3 105 in both S and X flex for the next hour. I was bit more consistent with the X, but it felt boardy and my miss was right. The S had more "flex flow", but my miss was more left...which I hate. I settled for a hard stepped S. Really like the shaft decision. Go get fit...you never know what you'll find.

That’s a really steep and aggressive take away. You really get down and through it beautifully though. That’s some green holding trajectory for sure. I struggle with a flat takeaway and lower trajectory. That move you do with your hands to queue the takeaway, really sets you on a steeper angle going back. Might have to try something similar to create that feel.

Shafts make all the difference and getting the flex correct is the most important one. When I was in my mid to early thirties I played steel rifle shafts. They were firm but not stiff. Then went to regular as the shafts have green stiffer over the years. I now play graphite regulars shafts in my cobra King cobra F8 irons. Still trying to get used to the feel. They feel lighter than steel.

What's written on the shaft makes no difference. It's one of the biggest annoyances in golf...there's no standard for shaft flex. It would be much better if all the manufacturers got together and agreed to use CPM rather than A, R, S and XS as a desegregation of flex.
    Nice video again James.

@Huw chardon Agreed 100% there. It really needs to be some sort of standard for the shaft manufacturers to work to...there is so much technology and R&D goes into producing shafts they need to give us, as their customers, some form of standard they'll all work to it'll help us all out

Im 5ft 7 and was over 12 stone, driver swing was always average 103mph lost weight down to 10 stone speed went to 100mph been at gym over a year, now at 11 stone, speed up to 108mph and climbing. I have xp 95 stiff in callalway apex irons and stiff tensei in ping g with average carry of 260 yards ... I hit all really good, but some big pulls on irons now and again... Should I have a look at a session on a flight monitor with extra stiff?

Can you do a video on shaft weight ? Ive been getting lessons trewout the summer this year, because my swing went to complete junk. Went from 90-91 6 iron speed, to could hardly get the ball airborn and sub 80 swing with a 6 iron. It was getting so bad i thought about just quitting golf. Went to a new trainer, and we have slowly been getting my swing back together over the summer. Then a few days ago i went for another lesson, and i had started to battle with huge over draws, and my trainer couldnt figure out why, because i was putting good swings on the balls, and the numbers where decent, but my swing speed had increased, since the last time i went for a lesson. 88 ish with a 6 iron now. So he looked closly at the recording and asked me to hit some balls with a 919 tour and didnt say anything about what shaft he gave me. I started hitting small draws again. He said he gave me a dynamic gold x-stiff 125gram shaft and my own shaft is a nippon 950gh wich is sub 100grams i belive
Honestly i couldnt feel the difference in flex, but it was pretty clear, when watching the recordings, that my own shaft was bending alot, but the weight difference felt much much nicer. Didnt feel like i had to force the swing, and i didnt loose any swing speed, even though there was a good 30 gram difference in the shafts. That really opened my eyes, since i couldnt tell the difference in flex, but the weight made a huge difference ! And the heavier shafts gave me a much nicer tempo in the swing
You can probely get used to anything, because you start to do things in your swing, if the shaft doesnt fit you to compensate ( weight wise, still not sold on the flex thing )
Sorry for the loooong ramble, but a video on shaft weight would be more interresting, then flex !

I have always played regular shafts, apart from a hybrid which was a stiff shaft. I have an average swing speed (77 mph in 7i) which I am trying to speed up (I can hope!!). Yet the stiff shaft in the hybrid always felt nicer.
For me the biggest issue is the shaft weight. I play a 65g graphite shaft in my M1s. It is very nice. My club pro shop has the 919 Forged and Tour in as 7i demo clubs so I tried them out. The demo 919 Forged was in a 95g steel shaft - that thing felt so heavy, in fact all I could feel was the weight of the shaft. Oddly though it made no difference to distance and the 919 Forged was an incredibly straight hitting club, I really struggled to put any shape on the ball.

I’ve been using s300 shafts in my TaylorMade tour preferred MC and I’m finding that my shots this season are flying much higher as well as spinning high and I’m losing a full club distance because of it. Do you think using an x stiff shaft flex could fix this issue? PS I use an X flex in both my driver and 5 wood

If anyone is lost like I was (sounds like a Jehova's witness start) before I got custom fit - this might be helpful:
Club head speed 7 iron: 86-88 MPH - got recommended S300 which I got together with new P790s.
Club head speed driver: 98-100 MPH - got recommended a stiff Tensei 55g
What I find a bit odd is despite your slightly faster CHS of 92-ish MPH compared to my 87-ish, I hit my 7i around 160 meters (175 yards) - although with my previous irons, XR, which are cavity filled.
Didn't hit my new P790 much shorter, just a few meters but I just found it surprising you hit your 7i roughly 150 meters with a 5 MPH swing speed difference.
This concludes my essay no one will read. :)

I normally play a seniors or a regular flex shaft, depending on the outside temp and how the old bones feel that day. I tried a x-stiff graphite shaft I put in a 4i. HAHA felt and looked like I was using a pool que.

This is a little weird, a few months ago I was using S-300 shafts in my clubs and went to see if I would fit into a different shaft. Long story short, I tested 4 different shaft companies in Stiff and their X-stiff options. I end up with X-100 shafts and my irons are more consistent and my misses are a lot smaller. I am also writing this before I fully watched the video. So, I am curious to see what you have to say. Thanks for the great videos!

    I dont understand the stiffness.

I have light weight iron shafts (95g) but think I may be better off with something a bit heavier. I'm physically strong enough it's just my technique which restricts my swing speed. I have found heavier shafts feel better but every iron fitting I've had they all lean to lighter (stiff) shafts? I don't know why?

I have uniflex shafts in the clubs I started with and can't really hit them hard or it just ends horribly. I almost want something that can cut through the ground after I hit the ball. I should probably get fit for a shaft but I feel like extra stiff would be my best option. I already tried the kbs tour 90 in stuff it it didn't seem to change much.
