    9cr18mov is actually made with an electroslag remelting process, which is sort of the ancestor to PM processes. Should give it some of the benefits of PM processes like making the steel more consistent throughout.

      Look up AR-RPM9. Powder metallurgy 9cr18mov exists.

    Zero thumbs down- NICE! I am working on the Civivi reviews and they use this. I'll probably link this video at the end. Thanks!

    Civivi used this 9cr18mov on thier damascus lineups. Civivi does a fantastic job with it. Sharpens wicked.

    I own one of these (Free Wolf 9Cr18Mov) knives. I have used it carelessly and after about 3-4 years I can still say that I’m impressed with its durability / quality. For a knife I purchased for about $20 bucks, it has been worth it and more.

    9Cr18Mov is a good enough blade steel for WE Knives to be using it in their new Civivi line of knives.

    I got one of these free wolf knives few years back still have it. Paid 20 bucks for it and I can't stress enough how perfect the detent is on this knife at least with the one I have. It's a suburb budget knife for sure. Razor sharp out of the box. I still carry it quite a bit in my rotation. Best 20 bucks I ever spent on a knife that's for damn sure. Smooth opening and closing as well. More so than knives that I paid double and triple for. It's like butter smooth. It's a shame they stopped producing them. Oh did I forget to mention the pocket clip is awesome as well. No screw heads sticking out to catch on pocket they are flush with the clip plus it sits extremely low in the pocket. What more can you ask for with a 20 dollar pocket knife really.

    The knife is a Chinese knock-off (naturally) of Alexey Konygin’s Asymmetric

    Thanks man! I asked about this steel and the sleipner and you did both. Very cool. Surprised on this 9cr one, not horrible. The sleipner surprised me on the second test with 180. So interesting how different edges do so much better than others. Your the man!

    Hi mate...thanks for that.... I have made a number of knives using 9cr18mov and I rate it as good as 440c and 1095 for edge retention. For me once it has been sharpened it hones up a little easier than 440c....but I feel 440c is better rust resistant. There will of course be the usual "it's all junk..shit..etc" without having tried it...

    • @philipdeppen8593
      @philipdeppen8593 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How can 440c be more rust resistant when the carbon steel is pretty much the same as 9cr18mov with 19cr18mov having more chromium. That makes absolutely no sense.

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge
    @CanadianCuttingEdge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I knew you would find my main complaint about that knife. I have no idea why they made a spike right where the index finger takes hold of that handle. A total stupid move on their part.
    I am glad your testing agreed with my intuition about the steel. I hadn't done a scientific type cut test before I mailed it off to you.
    Feel free to take a file to that sharp point to make it a bit less painful to use, and do anything you like with the blades I sent you. I am very glad to get a second perspective on them.

    I've noticed it to be around the 440C mark from cutting with it, but I think it takes a little finer of an edge when sharpening.

    I took the Dremel to that lock bar point. It makes a world of difference. BTW, the knife is called The Asymmetric. Don't know if it's a direct knock-off of a known knife. I do know the action on mine is buttery smooth and slick. For what seemed like the longest time it was the easiest deploying knife in my hundred and sixty plus folding knife collection.

    This steel is slightly different than 9cr19mov. I hope you test BG Ultimate pro knife itself to see its edge retention. You have tested unpopular knifes but you haven’t test it although it becomes popular even you tested all others Gerber knifes . Looking forward to you to test it sooner.
    (Please bring the broken tip knife 😂)

    I absolutely despise this steel. My Civivi Praxis (9cr18mov) is my EDC, and it dulls almost instantly. I'm not sure if it's a heat treatment issue, or a sharpening issue, but I shouldn't have to resharpen once a week when all I do is cut cellophane tape with it

  • @mt_baldwin

    That's kinda impressive considering the price point this steel is usually found at, I mean I'd certainly rather have this than 5cr15 or any of the other cr-mov steels.

    So, something you said on this made me wonder. Do different steels have different edge-death phases? Like this one out of the blue goes dull like POW [what happened?] but that one gradually almost imperceptibly gets gradually worse and worse until you finally decide to sharpen vs the other one that might transition from toothy to more smooth and have impacts or changes to the cutting etc? I think that is a thing right? Can you share any experiences with this? I am personally most interested in (in this order) S90V, BD1, N960co, 12C27.

  • @tacticalcenter8658

    Here's what real steel is saying for this new blade they are making for the Arbiter. dunno how better or worse the HT could be vs this Freewolf.
    knifenews.com/real-steel-squeezes-two-more-blades-into-2017/
    Quote.
    Gong points out that the Arbiter’s blade steel should not be underestimated due to associations with 8Cr13MoV. “The Chinese 9Cr18MoV is disregarded by many, and the true potential of it is not fully recognized,” he asserts. The significant presence of .9 - 1.05 Carbon (compared to 8Cr’s .7 - .8), along with a confident heat treat, makes it a special material. “The edge retention [it] gives allow this steel to compete with some of the best out there.”
    end quote
    IF only CRKT would upgrade to 9cr

    Most my knives are 9cr18mov... Buuuut... I'd really like to know how cpm-M4 performs with super acute angled edge! Would you be so kind as to re-do the M4 steel, but with a 13° edge &or smaller please?
