    Those numbers are incredible for Civivi. Who wouldn’t want that kind of performance for $45. I have the Praxis, it was one of the first models released. It has performed very well for me. I love these tests that prove us all wrong. Give me this steel over most M390. Thank you

    PROPER real world testing.
    Cutting on wooden board with random pressure throws any result out the window.
    I've used a 8cr13 Kershaw One Ton for 8 years opening a container full of boxes and cutting thru strapping on a monthly basis, cutting wire even scraping grouting off tiles. Never felt the need to move to "super steels". Have moved on to AUS10A though.
    My Real Steel Arbiter, 9cr large version of what you tested here, felt soft the one time I sharpened though I was using brand new diamond stones. Saying that it's been working perfect as a daily camp knife and tucks nicely tent pillow knife when sleeping incase of lions/hyaena etc

    I looked this up (and actually found this channel initially) because I’d been having similar experiences with my 9cr civivis. I’d noticed that my praxis was giving me similar “real world carry” retention compared to my 30v, 35vn and xhp spydercos. If you REALLY wanna push the issue, they probably get you a bit further because they’re easy to strop back. Definitely not a popular sentiment among the super steel devotees but hey...it is what it is. Really speaks to the power of heat treat and blade geometry.

      It's consumer psychology of marketing the "latest and greatest" in super steels and handle material, that the big familiar companies/makers rely upon, to sucker buyers with perceived quality and performance, while justifying higher prices.
      WE/Civivi gave their 9cr18mov a shot at public acceptance, but couldn't overcome the stereotype of "made in China" steel - so now they're going to use the popular and costlier Western steels and charge more, just like their Western and Japanese counterparts.
      Now they understand that "snob appeal" sells more.

  • @BrandonGavin_EDC
    @BrandonGavin_EDC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That’s pretty amazing results, I’ve seen some S30V that didn’t hit that mark. I’m sure you have because most of my experience in seeing data is you and Cedric and Ada . Best performance to cost ratio out there. Maybe some really well done D2 could beat that, but I don’t think you would find it on the $50-$70 Range.

But it appears WE/CIVIVI have some things dialed in...astonishing at times considering what Lionsteel is asking for M390 and it's output. Seems like a good gift for a non-knife person to infect them with the disease...🤣😂

      @@Outpost_76 it's interesting if you've followed the emergence of the glamour steels...I remember Kiser was kind of the first to really flood the market with S35vn @ the sub $150 price point. The results for Civivi's 9Cr18Mov make me question spending twice as much for S35VN. While Real Steel's 9Cr18Mov fell short of Civivi's, it still beats a lot of D2. That's what the Chinese have been providing overall, when their better companies aren't blindly avoided - value for the money spent.
      Meanwhile, other companies use psychological manipulation to sell the "latest and greatest" to justify higher prices.
      Good luck in getting Civivi to go back to their 9cr18mov, since they realize that people shun good metals, geometry, and heat treatment for familiar Western steels that have the perceived quality that comes with higher costs.

    Do I understand correctly that these would come from the factory with something more like 20° edges and that if we don't alter that to 15° like you did here (not to speak of the other sharpening details yet), we should expect substantially less impressive results than you've gotten here?

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. The Baklash already had a 16 dps edge. The Naja was closer to 21 dps factory. I'll be talking about secondary bevel angles in a separate video. After having some long conversations with Roman and I have some tests not out yet, not all steels do better past a certain point. Look at my M390 PM2 video that was 18 dps and the first Hogue RSK 20CV video where below 17 dps performance fell off. I test at 15 dps as often as possible to keep it all on the same standard. There have been a few times I ran different angles and its always notated during the video.

    Another thing I would like to remind everyone of: D2 steel is HARD to sharpen. I consider myself slightly above average when it comes to sharpening with whetstones, and truth be told, I've never been able to get an edge that I consider acceptable with D2 steel. I bought a Praxis recently, and it sharpens beautify with no problem.
    The video shows us that D2 and 9CR are pretty much neck and neck, but would it really be a fair test if you, yourself, can't get a good edge on it after sharpening it? Probably not.
    I'd rather have a knife with a steel that I can sharpen accurately than a steel that *says* will hold an edge better but I myself can't sharpen.

Also Civivi's excellent blade geometry obviously helps with the slicing , anyway 9cr18 and AUS-10 are my favorite budget steels by a long shot , the ease of sharpening and super fine edge are awesome, If you guys have never used these steels I would HIGHLY Recommend them ...👍👊🖖
