Blade HQ Didn't see this video until today so a little sad I missed another giveaway but wanted to say keep up the cool videos. It's awesome that your company let's you go out and do awesome things like this. I work for a Brewery here in Va and every year we go out on a company camping trip in the Shenandoah and I always bring my Adamas and esee 6 that I purchased through you. Cheers from Va!!
You mean when people actually depended on their knives to survive vs opening the packaging of their new airpods? Yeah. Everybody thinks they need steel that they can skin a herd of buffalo between sharpenings to open their mail. I'd recommend learning to sharpen your knife vs buying a $500 3.5in folder and paying someone $50 bucks to sharpen it.
@@EverythingN.Nothing What the actual fuck are you talking about? Seemingly all you do is sit around making assumptions about people lol. I just love how you assume that anyone with an expensive knife never uses it. You have to make not one but at least TWO different assumptions to come to that conclusion. Like only poor people work in your opinion, and only rich people can save money. Now I am not saying you are smart enough to have actually thought this through, I really dont think you are. I am trying to point out that you have to clean up your word vomit, no one wants to look at that.
Most people that beef on 8cr steel are the ones that spend hundreds of dollars on s110v steel and they don't even use their pocket knives. Flicking it open, cutting paper and closing it does not count as using it.
Wow, so you klnow most of the people who don't like 8cr13MoV steel? More than this, you know exactly how often they use their knives? It's amazing you have time to live your own life. The truith is you were stupid enough, and cheap enough, to buy some knife made of 8cr13MoV, and you don't like learning what a dumbass that makes you.
How the fuck do you know, moron? A lot of persons who have nice knives actually work with their hands for a living--unlike yourself. They're knives get plenty of use. If you saved your money you could buy nice stuff as well, and then you wouldn't have to go on TH-cam and post petty, jealous comments.
Yep! Mine didn't even last a week, lesson learnt at a young age... I was happy with my BK2 till i removed the scales & found it skeletonized WTF! I wouldn't have purchased it, if i had of known, nice way to make a tough knife weak imho...
@@gnosisrisingbushcraftorgan2273 , yes I know. I was going to purchase a BK2 but did my research and found out they skeletonized the handles. There is a video of a guy breaking his, albeit he was hammering on it. So instead I purchased the Ontario 1/4" 5160 steel RD6 and RD Tanto. I got them from TKC and not Made in China, invested in China Amazon. Paid a little bit more but happy to support those guys. The Ontario RD6 and RD Tanto have solid handles with no material cut out of that 5160. They are pretty indestructible and I now pair them with a good 'ole Buck 110 drop point. The ease of sharpening that BOS 420HC and Ontario's 5160 in the field is why. Spent too much on collecting 'super steel' knives over the years which was pointless.
I dunno. I bought a $3 flea market knife I was going to give as a gift in the 90s. It got stuck in a drawer until a couple weeks ago. I attempted to open it and the scales pretty much disintegrated. I bet a dollar the steel wasn't any better!
I dunno, the “420” or unnamed steel used in cheap Chinese knives is pretty horrible, you can spend 3 hours getting it relatively sharp then move it through the air too fast and it will dull…
Thanks man! We try to listen to what people are saying and put it to the test. We're guilty of being armchair warriors and sofa sages just as much as the next steel snob, but we also try to get out and push limits. Glad you like it! -Ben
Meinungs Freiheit Its fine enough. 420 is soft but 420hc has a higher carbon content and is tougher. Its easy to sharpen and lasts long enough if you arent required to use it rough the entire day. Id take 420hc over cheap chinese knives with mystery 440 Plus its so easy to sharpen all you have to do is take a field sharpener with you to keep it sharp.
@@heavyhanded1782 The mystery 440c is actually 440c most of the time I have daily carried a pm2 ganzo for three years and there have been rockwell tests and composition tests on their steel. It's legit Most of theD2 is legit too. Only bad thing you can say about most of them is the grind is terrible and maybe the heat treat is off. Can never know for sure tho about the heat treat
@@ericmiller254 ganzo isn't what im referring to. They list their steel as 440c anyway. Im talking about noname knives with "440" stamped on the blade. Most of the time they are 440A or 440B. Or hell even no name knives marked with 440c d2 154cm s35vn they can all be fake. That's why a reliable company is key. The steel is honestly the least of the worries. If it's not heat treated right it's garbage regardless of the "impressive" steel. That's why I was saying a proper 420hc can go a long way in the budget department if it's done right and has a good long reputation. Eafengrow for example is one such shady company that's all over Amazon listed as different high quality steels and many are actually just Chinese steels stamped with lies. It's just a buyer beware market and lots of research needs to be done before buying from questionable brands. Ganzo is an actual company and I own some of their knives. I'm a fan though I'm disappointed with so many designs having a non reversible pocket clip
Blade HQ - Looks very cold! We’re glad the storm didn’t roll in too badly and the trip worked out! Thank you for taking a look at the most common steels CRKT utilizes in the majority of our knives (8Cr13MoV, 8Cr14MoV). For the fans and customers out there that are curious, CRKT does offer other steels as well depending on the models (SK5, 1.4116, AUS 8, 12C27, etc.). Typically a few factors are considered when CRKT selects a steel including performance, cost, value, supply, and best use. Since the majority of our knives are designed to be used in your everyday lives, the 8Cr’s perform well and provide a good value. Stay safe out there and thanks again! Really enjoyed the video! Hi Cassy!
CRKT OFFICIAL: Steel and aluminium from EU and China will be soon more expensive in the USA. Any predictions about future knife prices and steel changes?
CRKT OFFICIAL: The problem is that at the prices you charge for knives made with 8Cr they are not a good value. In fact none of the steels you listed are particularly expensive, I understand from a business standpoint that you use these steels to maximize your profits but despite some great designs I just can’t bring myself to purchase them. A good example is the Clever Girl, I’m just not going to pay $80 at the lowest price I can find on the Internet for what is basically 1080 steel. Given the high quality of knives with better steel coming out of the manufacturers in China some of which I suspect are OEM suppliers for your company and other American-based knife companies makes it hard to spend my money on your brand.
Hello CRKT official, now please explain how cold steel manages to sell broken skull made in Taiwan for USD 60 (link below) with a 4 inch blade and CTS XHP steel, which has 4x times edge retention than 8cr (www.patreon.com/posts/17366331)? So please dont insult our intellect and stop the bs about best use, performance, cost, value and supply. Its all about higher margin. I think you may reconsider your steel choice, when you see lower revenue on your p&l. www.amazon.com/4011879-Cold-Steel-Broken-Folder-OD/dp/B019RSX6MO/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1520631916&sr=1-2&keywords=broken+skull
Dude you're preaching to the choir. I keep trying tell people when they break out the steel snobbery text book on me, that the same steel can vary from on heat treatment to another. Everyone wants to whip their super steel out and wave it around, but I can pretty much guarantee that I heat treated the 154CM in the knife I have on my side better and more consistently than their mass produced, mass heat treated M390 blade. 99.999% of people talking shit about steel online have never heard treated a blade in their entire life so to them it's just "It's this steel so it's definitely going to perform this way."
@@DeadBoysTwo Good point, but im still hesitant hard using those knives after seeing this video. th-cam.com/video/7F5G3v-ftSc/w-d-xo.html I've seen other videos with 3v steel for example that can take this kind of beating for hours.
[MEANWHILE AT BIG BROTHER: BLADEHQ EDITION] "Yo, dude... I heard Nate borrowed Jerry's Para2 and ruined the mirror polished edge on it." "Whoa... What? Seriously? Jerry took forever on his Wicked Edge to get that on it." "Yeah, worse yet... Nate sharpened it. at almost 50 degrees inclusive. With a carbide sharpener." [NATE WAS LATER VOTED OFF THE IS- OH, WAIT, WRONG SHOW. HE WAS MADE TO CLEAN THE TOILETS.]
I hate the word cheap because has the connotation that everything low cost is garbage, that won't do the job. You could use the same word for 429HC that Buck uses and guys have been using that steel in the woods for years. yes I know Buck has a great heat treat process but that does not mean others don't. The guy that developed the process has his own company and markets his services. In fact 8cr is slightly higher in carbon than 429hc they are about the same in Chromium , both will take a hardness at similar levels. I am an older guy from a time we held a buck knife in high esteem to have in the hunting camp, Yes the new alloys are wonderful, do you want them? yes, Do you need them? no. will you really notice much difference maybe in edge holding But then that $499.99 dollar blade may sit at home in the collection while you take your 429HC or 8cr steel knife and use the hell out of it.
Great comment. It’s literally all marketing 8cr is a great working steel for the money and I think they know that so they try to talk down about it so that people will think it’s junk and want to buy something more “premium” that’s what I’ve observed. I have a crkt squid that I’ve carried for a year and I used it for everything from cutting open bags of mulch, thick plastic packaging, foam, garden hose and my dad even used it to cut out a root that was in the way of a project. After a year of constant use it still shaved hair, and I haven’t properly sharped it once all I did was strop it every once in a while and touched it up a couple times on a field sharp ceramic hone.
PRESUMING the knife allows you to survive the emergency and does not suffer a failure that exacerbates the original emergency.... For example attempting to "chop" something with a cheap 420steel knife the knife blade then shatters and a fingernail sized piece penetrates one of your eyes, and thus distracted by that injury you walk off of a cliff and DIE from injuries sustained in the subsequent fall....
@@AllanDeGroot What if he wears glasses? Or the emergency started when he might be swimming in a remote lake and his companion or/and bandits steal all his gear bar goggles and trunks. Then no footwear would be a more pressing concern than a statistically-low steel splinter in the eye because he may well go about in the wilderness wearing them or at least put them on during tasks because of worriers on TH-cam..
Charleston is correct. If you sweat....you're screwed out there. When you're sitting around a campfire or in a sleeping bag you're OK.... Plus you don't have to carry a ton of stuff..... A base layer, fleece, and down puffy jacket will get you through most anything in the lower 48.
@@redriver6541 You're not totally screwed if you have a camp fire to dry off at, but yeah, your regular body gives off maybe 60-100 watts of heat, but you can put out double that by just walking around at a decent pace, and running can be hundreds and hundreds of watts extra. Control your layers and control your pace to keep warm - and dress cold to start out because you'll warm up in the next 20 minutes hiking.
8Cr13MoV is actually not that bad.. That 420J2 shit that CRKT also uses is the worst.. .2-.3% carbon means it's basically just stainless mild steel.. At least the 8Cr13MoV has .8% carbon and is hardenable. It has to be heat treated correctly, but done well, can be very decent..
That's not how hardenablility works. Carbon isn't the sole material that attributes to a steel's maximum reachable hardness. Take 3Cr13MoV. It only has 0.3ish% carbon but it also has 13% chromium which is also a contributing factor to hardness along side Vanadium which is a carbide former. If you heat treat that steel PROPERLY you can get it to act almost like stainless 5061 in large cutting tools. It won't have the fatigue life of a true spring steel but that's a different attribute for and entirely different application. I have video somewhere of me testing one of the original SCHMBS prototypes by bending it past 45° and it returning to true. You can't do that with mild steel.
Hmmm...3 men go camping overnight in the freezing cold and the camera "goes out". Hey, what happens in the deep woods of the Utah mountains stays in the deep woods of the Utah mountains.
they make these nifty things now called sharpeners. a knife doesn't need to have an edge that will last a lifetime. there's absolutely nothing wrong with CRKTs, they are great knives.
Absolutely nothing wrong with CRKT eh? I guess some of us need and demand more performance and quality materials in a blade than weekend parking lot campers that are roughing it lol!
Jason G your full of yourself aren’t you? “ I require a premium steel, something for the discerning gentleman.” Most folks don’t wanna beat the hell out of a $100 + knife... You have put yourself on a pedestal by talking down to people calling them weekend parking lot campers.... ur a jackass.
Great video. I have hiked, camped and backpacked for over 35 years and I am a believer in fixed blades made of A2, 01 and D2 tool steels. At times I had to use these knives much harder than I have wanted to. They have always performed past my expectations. These knives have a convex edge and when it starts to dull, strop it and it is back to hair shaving sharp. The brands are a Randall in 01, Bark River in A2. In tools I have always saved up for the best quality I can get. It will be the least costly in the long run and provide the most enjoyment. Keep up the great videos and happy camping. Barry Levitt
Great Vid. Am an 84 year old former outdoorsman, camper, health problems keep me in now. Love the woods and getting away. Always remember do not put off things as this. Life is so short, time is quick. Out door skills are great. Wish many times I was born in the 1800s when we were not so crowded in. Live in Fla. and it is ruined, crowded, subdivisions every where, malls North Fla. Nice where we are central area, RUINED. Horrible traffic. Would love to be in your part of the country. God bless. Just found y'all . 🐻😍😍
When I saw you cutting that paracord (at 8:31) I nearly fell out of my chair. WTF! "Never cut! Always untie!" I thought that was everybody's mantra. Apparently some people like wasting valuable resources.
That storm wasn't too terrible over in Bear Lake, or so I thought. It kinda got caught up in Brigham and then out of nowhere, it dumped on us! Good on you for sticking this video out!
I have a 7cr13 knife as a daily pocket knife. It's not my high carbon bushcrafting knife, but I get weird looks when I carry my badass woodsmans knife lol. The benefits of low carbon steel (as I'm sure you know) are many! corrosion resistance, cost efficiency, and it's easier to find things to sharpen your blades with (the bottom of ceramic plates, car windows, rocks, etc). It's also less taxing on your whetstones, files, or diamond plates (whatever you use to sharpen your gear in the field) It also allows you to refine your sharpening ability. If you have an inconsistent sharpening angle on your blade, you will be able to notice the loss of performance on a cut test. This allows the sharpener to correct the second bevel in a much quicker time, than super steel blades :) Best of luck brother God bless
This is old but I rewatch it because you guys earned mas respect for actually carrying out. Miss Ben. You should get him back as a guest at some point. Ben if you come back I’ll buy your knife which I like anyway.
Terrific video. I live in upstate NY where we just had back to back Noreasters. I would take this equipment up to the nearby Shawangunk mountains with my 16 yo daughter and my newly 12 yo son. There is more than 3 feet of fresh snow up there! It would be a blast!
Kind of a sidebar here: After a lifelong use of blade steel (60 years), owning and using a great many top makers products and making knives for myself and others...what I’m excited to see is the fairly recent acceptance of D2 into a widely available moderate cost blade steel. It used to be popular and considered a pretty high end steel but got pushed aside by the emergence of the crazy good powder steels. But more and more I see D2 offered as one of the basic steel choices by commercial makers. Even the Chinese knife community is selling really well made knives with properly treated D2. My only problem with D2 is that deep down I like A2 better. Bark River knows A2 well and do it right. Hmmm. Maybe I should cut back on the caffeine. This looks like a case of “Help me I’ve fallen and I can’t shut up.” 😆
For the Twinkie knife set, -I want to do an Adirondack back country ski trip -with my buddy Bobby. Just tried some backcountry ski for the first time with him just this Saterday. I’m hooked. I love skiing, challenges, and the woods. Hard to get that better than with back country ski. Stay frosty!
This was another fun video. I have to say that even though I don't agree with the choice of knives that make your banter and feature lists, your videos are always fun as hell to watch. Obviously you all are film fans, as well as survival, and camping nuts. And that makes for a great combo in creating your videos, so thanks again BLADEHQ.
Great video, glad I found it. the CRTK axe looks very pack friendly, good hiking buddy. I lived in VT most of life, the most important thing for this kind of bushcraft is not your steel, it's your boots, socks and bag.
What a cool shop and an incredible warehouse, that must be paradise. Great project and video! The 8Cr13MoV has been doing a good job on the Spyderco Tenacious for many years! The giveaway will be linked right away!
I've literally beaten the crap out of a tenacious and it's held up fine.. I have some nice blades in expensive steels but cheap blades have their place as well.
I'd take those up to Summit Lake on Mt. Evans here in Colorado with my wife and best friends. I think this video is awesome. People way to quickly crap on inexpensive knife steels without realizing that they make up the majority of the market and they are actually just fine. My wife carries a Chinese Spyderco that has treated her great for years now.
I’m actually going camping with my best friend next weekend at Talulah Gorge! Camping has always been my favorite way to get away and unwind, it’s the perfect excuse to leave you’re phone at home and just enjoy nature! I carry a knife with me everywhere I go and actually have been looking for a good fixed blade camping knife. I’ll definitely check out the CRKT knives!
15% steel type 85% heat treatment Steel types are way overrated as long as the knife maker knows their heat treatment. If they don't even the best high tech mystery micracle steel is not gonna help you.
Boundary waters man! I used to go every summer with friends from high school and would love to go back again! Thanks for the chance to try some of these awesome tools!
I've got quite some experience over the years and I have to say that D2 is my absolute favorite. In my experience it even outperforms S35VN. S35VN or S30V might hold that fine razor edge a bit longer but once you go past that point these steels are pretty much dull because the edge rolls over while D2 just gets kinda rough and cuts even more aggressively. On my stainless blades I've got a lot more dull spots than on the ones with D2. Maybe CPM-D2 is even better but I haven't tried that one yet.
D2 makes a good blade steel but has very little latitude in heat treat in contrast to many other cutlery steels. Tight quality control is crucial to optimize this steel An issue with the plethora of cheap Chinese D2 is heat treating hundreds to thousands of blades simultaneously in large rooms reduces oversight ability. High variability of great to poor D2 of the same model knife is quite common with cheap Chinese blades. Budget priced blades stamped D2 is a game of hit or miss if the blade is a performer. However, higher tiered and more expensive Chinese brands do have good quality control. Main aspect, just because stamped D2, doesn't necessarily indicate a great performing blade.
I'd take my daughter camping in the hoosier national forest, it's a favorite pass-time of ours. Things are slowly warming up here in Indiana so we're all excited to go.....LOVE the video!
I'd go with my fishing buddies for a multi-day fishing "trip"(not really a trip cuz we make camp at one spot and stay there for a few days) on the banks of Danube near Vidin. I can't believe people still believe 8Cr13MoV is bad... It's not S35VN that's for sure, but the steel can be surprisingly good if heat treated well, which a lot of companies actually do. You get quite a lot bang for you buck with 8Cr... and 440C(the ones form Boker and Sanrenmu are incredible).
most compaines heat treat 8cr, 440c etc really soft. im not sure what your smoking but CRKT and Kershaw budget steel is awful and heat treated poorly. its like that because they are low cost and have HUGE margins for making money on them. Boker and Sanrenmu are among the worst.
AFAIK, it's the Chinese version of AUS8 steel, which was pretty much the standard knife steel a decade ago (and I still have knives from a decade ago in AUS8). Shouldn't be too bad, unless you mess up something in the making of the knife.
harkonen1000000 Aus8 is Japanese and gets sharp but doesn't keep an edge worth a damn. It's better than 8cr13mov though. I'd avoid both in 2018. Any knife with these steels should only cost $20 max.
That's awesome wish I lived closer my son 20 and brother 19 have always bin knife guys and love to see the store. We have always bin Bush having fun. Thanks for the vids --three little natives on a little reservation in Ontario Canada--.👍😎👍
Excellent video, your sufferings in the sub zero canyons of Utah made it oh so sweet. If I won the Twinkie knife set, I'd get all geared up, walk into BladeHQ, say hello, then go somewhere civilized for lunch. hahaha
I would take this gear on my next overnight hike in Boone National Forest (Natural Bridge area) in Kentucky. Love your presentations Keep up the great work.
@@apugalypse_now Actually, 440B is pretty close to AUS-8 in terms of composition lol. Technically, it's a bit better actually. Pretty close in carbon content, significantly more chromium, more molybdenum, etc.
I know the contest is over, but I just wanted to throw in there that I'd have brought those all the way from Minnesota back to Utah...I do overland camping cross country in my '06 Nissan Xterra 4x4, and last year I took 2 trips from MN through SD, WY, NE, CO to Moab, UT and camp in my vehicle the whole way before doing off-road trails down in Moab...next time I make the trip down I'm for sure stopping at the Blade HQ building to say hi to everyone, and I'll gladly do a pocket check once I get there...love your guys' content, and I look forward to watching more videos and buying more gear...
"Twinkie" steel legit saved my life once. All of my edc is cheap steel, because I would much rather lose or break something cheap, and I know that it works. I've found fancy steel with better edge retention doesn't really make much of a difference when you really need it.
Totally would take these with my camping with my son! I have several knives in 8Cr13MoV Steel, they work well, and I'm not afraid to abuse them if necessary!
I’d go hiking up Mt. Blackfoot, Mt. pinnacle, and some other I can’t remember rn(it maybe magazine)in Arkansas next week with my dad and maybe a friend from church. Edit: the spells man, the spells
I would take these camp tools with me to Gray's Arch in Daniel Boone National Forest in Eastern Kentucky to make my camping a lot easier and more fun experience. You guys are great. Keep up the good work.
I would take it on my 3 day backpacking trip into the Grand Canyon in April. Can’t wait and this would be a great addition to my gear. Love the videos, keep them coming.
Truth be told, I'd probably just sit in my recliner and play with the knife, saw and axe. Hey, certainly not crazy enough to go out in the cold and snow ... and in the summer, bugs and poison ivy and bears. Naw, staying in my recliner.
Hey, thanks! While I might avoid the great outdoors (and all the inherent risks), I do "manifest" my "manliness" by collecting knives. That's gotta count for something!!!
The worst steel that isn't straight up pot metal is probably 2Cr13MoV, 3Cr13MoV, or 420J. 8Cr13MoV sucks, especially over $25 or so, but it's nowhere near the worst.
It actually makes for fantastic go to choice for beating the shit out of it and after good amount of time if it breaks, it doesn't make you cry. This and 7cr17Mov. Expensive knives are too expensive to beat up :p
That was so awesome how she found the axe before you even posted the video. I would use the kit to go camping on the river down from my house a few miles and take my kids 12 and 13 years old. Thanks for such good content you guys keep putting out.
As soon as you guys said let us know where you would take it I immediately thought Red River Gorge in Kentucky with my best friend, especially since his birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. Thanks for all the awesome content you guys put out!
I have never gone camping before in my whole life, but would love to experience it. If I win the tools, they would definitely be used accordingly. They would be a great starter set for me.
Only gear queers care about steel that much. It's a knife.... Use it. sharpen it. Be practical for once. Spyderco tenacious is one of my favorite knives to carry.. I have a few. Even though its 8cr1mov steel (twinky steel??) I never sat there and been like " man this steel sucks" i have plenty of other knives way more expensive and "better quality" and I see no different besides the occasion " ooo you have a Griptilian!!". I guess this video is just some food for thought but don't let it scare you away. If you like a knife and feel good carrying it then do it.. even if it's 30 bucks.
Buahahaha, now that I call a smart move))) Of course 8cr has its application, its ok for outdoors, when you cut not so fibrous materials, like wood etc, but try to cut a lot of cardboard or rope with it. And for the crkt its a question of sales structure, if they want to adress steel snobs, who own more than 50 knives each and buy every new model they like its one thing, got to get better steels. Guess 80% of bladehq audience are steel snobs more or less. If they want to sell through wallmart its ok, no one will know anyway, if its stainless its ok))) The main question which part of the market is bigger, guess its major population, who knows about the knives that they can be sharp and dull and they cut groceries)))
I know this is late reply - but BladeHQ guys - Need more of these videos! Love watching you guys put what you sell to work! Both educational and motivation to go out there and have fun!
My wife and I are taking a trip back to the guest ranch where we met. It would be awesome to extend the trip by one day and camp out with the Twinkie Camp Set. Cheers! Great video as always!!
That’s a great video. Makes me miss my time in Utah. I appreciate your honesty, being practical, and down to earth when you guys gave your final remarks about the steel. Looking to take those to the Appalachian Trail around the Delaware water gap.
I’m no blade snob (yet) and could find many uses for a camp axe, saw, and fixed blade. I just got my first Moraknive and am looking forward to a few trips this spring around ALABAMA. I hammock camp so I know the need for a good pad to keep warm.
I love the blade shape & ergonomics of the Honeybadger, but the 8Cr13MOV blunts so easily. It has come to the point that I carry a Lansky Blademedic as a part of my EDC.
I love living in utah so much, not only for the fact that i live about 30 minutes away from BladeHQ but also because of the amazing wildlife and things to see outdoors
I love hiking in the southwest with friends and going backpacking in New Mexico. That Twinkie set sure would have come in handy when my friend lost his knife in the desert in Eastern Arizona!
If I were to win those camp sets, I would probably go hiking with my uncle and grandfather up in the Appalachians. My uncle has hiked the whole trail several times, and I would like to try it for myself. Love this style of video, keep it up!
I would take the Twinkie tools out with my grandparents camping by the river along with my cousins so I could teach my cousins some new skills and hopefully give them a memory that will last forever, keep up with the great vids and best of luck to you guys and your company in the future.
Good thing it was super warm when u went, I'm from canada so 8 degrees f is -13 c and that is like a sweater, ballcap, shades, and Jean's weather, tonight it's going to be -39c here that's -38 f for u guys that's cold
Hey Ben, I would most likely take the gear up to Mt Bachelor in Central Oregon and spend the night either near the base or by one of the many lakes. That said I might even take it down to Cater Lake. I love to see other people that are not bothered by the snow! As long as you have a hot fire, good friends, and cold beer its a good camping trip!
it's not THAT cold around here in St. Louis area anymore, but I have a shelter I built with a pocket knife in a small park (I got permission for it), but it's been a while and it's leaning something bad, so it'd be nice to gt back there and repair it with proper tools. I have an axe and a saw, but nothing that I could stick in a pack and head out. I'd take my cousin Josh. We made some repairs last time we went out and built another shelter for him and a bench, so it'd be cool to fix it all up again with the guy who helped me rebuild it last time.
Awesome video guys! Definitely cool to see you guys out in the cold. I would definitely use those tools the next time my wife and I go hiking/camping. VA has so many awesome places to hike/camp. Thanks guys!

I love how it's called the Twinkie camp surprise lol
Hey guys, big question here. Are giveaways only for people who reside in the US?
Blade HQ since when is 1055 shit steel? ...make sure you tell the good people at KA-Bar their knife is shit!
Totally agree on the sleeping bag vs knife statement. For a weekend trip, a $300 sleeping bag and $30 knife is infinitely preferable to the reverse.
The real outdoorsmen of the past would've killed for 8CR!
Actually I bet most of them would have been fine with their high carbon steel
No they would not have... since when is 1055 shit steel? ...make sure you tell the good people at KA-Bar their knife is shit!
@@jasong9502 ya my kabar has 1095 and i beat the dog shit out of it and still kickin it
You mean when people actually depended on their knives to survive vs opening the packaging of their new airpods?

Their knife snobs. Us country boys actually use our knives and know right away if a steel is good or not.
Yea. The same guys will probably buy a Hobart N50 and end up polishing it in their "kitchens".
James Ritchie well gee, i guess he’s talking about you since it sounds like you took it so personally
The worst steel ever was in those hollow-handle Rambo knives back in the 80's!
I used to sharpen mine on a brick🤫
Awesome compasses
The fact that you guys do this stuff because of our comments is why I love blade HQ
Thanks man! We try to listen to what people are saying and put it to the test. We're guilty of being armchair warriors and sofa sages just as much as the next steel snob, but we also try to get out and push limits. Glad you like it! -Ben
Whoever thinks 8Cr13MoV is the worst has never had to live with 420. I swear a wet piece of paper holds an edge better.
You forgot to add the word "Toilet" in front of the word Paper :P
Not to be confused with 420hc which is damn good.
Meinungs Freiheit Its fine enough. 420 is soft but 420hc has a higher carbon content and is tougher. Its easy to sharpen and lasts long enough if you arent required to use it rough the entire day. Id take 420hc over cheap chinese knives with mystery 440
Plus its so easy to sharpen all you have to do is take a field sharpener with you to keep it sharp.
@@heavyhanded1782 The mystery 440c is actually 440c most of the time
I have daily carried a pm2 ganzo for three years and there have been rockwell tests and composition tests on their steel.
It's legit
Most of theD2 is legit too.
Hi Cassy!
CRKT OFFICIAL Providing products that work at a price point average people can actually afford is never a mistake!
CRKT OFFICIAL: Steel and aluminium from EU and China will be soon more expensive in the USA. Any predictions about future knife prices and steel changes?
no need to explain urselves we understand the budget friendly option lol

Coment iz 100 % in place.
Thous guys are paide from these companies to do these kommercials for them.
There's definitely a difference between a buck knife and a $400 fallkniven, but definitely not $340 difference.
Cheap can have a negative connotation. low cost and bad
Affordable is more positive I feel. low cost and good.
You mean 420HC with Boss heat treatment
ANY knife you have in an emergency is a good knife . Thats why I EDC.
Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it! ;)
Precisely! You are THINKING, which is exactly what you are supposed to do to AVOID getting in those situations in the first place!
@@AllanDeGroot It's about correct thinking my friend. Bytheway, 420hc steel has a softer edge than 440 etc but is tougher/less likely to shatter.
I love how they're constantly complaining about the cold, but dressed for late fall.
Walking keeps you warm you will get super hot if you have alot on
Charleston is correct. If you sweat....you're screwed out there. When you're sitting around a campfire or in a sleeping bag you're OK.... Plus you don't have to carry a ton of stuff..... A base layer, fleece, and down puffy jacket will get you through most anything in the lower 48.
@@redriver6541
You're not totally screwed if you have a camp fire to dry off at, but yeah, your regular body gives off maybe 60-100 watts of heat, but you can put out double that by just walking around at a decent pace, and running can be hundreds and hundreds of watts extra.
Same as aus 8 8cr13mov is good steel

It's also less taxing on your whetstones, files, or diamond plates (whatever you use to sharpen your gear in the field)
It also allows you to refine your sharpening ability. If you have an inconsistent sharpening angle on your blade, you will be able to notice the loss of performance on a cut test. This allows the sharpener to correct the second bevel in a much quicker time, than super steel blades :)
Best of luck brother God bless

Cool.
@@dougware3629 That explains a lot for me. I have a cheap folder in D2 that wasn't even close to my Eskabar in D2.

How long do orders typically take
I would take it on my 3 day backpacking trip into the Grand Canyon in April. Can’t wait and this would be a great addition to my gear. Love the videos, keep them coming.
I'd take the twinkie knife set to the mountains of Panama with my best friend Den
Love this stuff no one else does reviews like this you guys always got my support
Truth be told, I'd probably just sit in my recliner and play with the knife, saw and axe. Hey, certainly not crazy enough to go out in the cold and snow ... and in the summer, bugs and poison ivy and bears. Naw, staying in my recliner.
Charles Watts Honesty. I like that in a man!
Hey, thanks! While I might avoid the great outdoors (and all the inherent risks), I do "manifest" my "manliness" by collecting knives. That's gotta count for something!!!
That was the best bladehq video. Y'all should do more like that
The worst steel that isn't straight up pot metal is probably 2Cr13MoV, 3Cr13MoV, or 420J.
Ey, Thanks for this guys. It takes a major effort to put this out for us.
Geeeee, how did our ancestors survive in the wilds essentially using kitchen knives without vg10 or sv2000? How are we as a nation even alive?
That was so awesome how she found the axe before you even posted the video. I would use the kit to go camping on the river down from my house a few miles and take my kids 12 and 13 years old. Thanks for such good content you guys keep putting out.
Easy I'd take my buddies Nick and Zack to Pocahontas park in Virginia to have a 72 hour bugout
As soon as you guys said let us know where you would take it I immediately thought Red River Gorge in Kentucky with my best friend, especially since his birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks.
Thanks for all the awesome content you guys put out!
insert brokeback mountain joke here
I have never gone camping before in my whole life, but would love to experience it.
This is one of my favorite BHQ vids
Buahahaha, now that I call a smart move))) Of course 8cr has its application, its ok for outdoors, when you cut not so fibrous materials, like wood etc, but try to cut a lot of cardboard or rope with it.
And for the crkt its a question of sales structure, if they want to adress steel snobs, who own more than 50 knives each and buy every new model they like its one thing, got to get better steels. Guess 80% of bladehq audience are steel snobs more or less.
If they want to sell through wallmart its ok, no one will know anyway, if its stainless its ok)))
The main question which part of the market is bigger, guess its major population, who knows about the knives that they can be sharp and dull and they cut groceries)))
I know this is late reply - but BladeHQ guys - Need more of these videos! Love watching you guys put what you sell to work! Both educational and motivation to go out there and have fun!
They made that lady drive all the way over just to let her keep the low-quality axe she already found. What a lousy prize.
No. It was to be on the internet and be in a video.
Best video yet from Blade HQ!
Wish you guys would do more videos like this. Really fun to watch!
Hey Ben,
I would most likely take the gear up to Mt Bachelor in Central Oregon and spend the night either near the base or by one of the many lakes.
Man I miss you guys. But glad you have your own channel now.
Awesome video guys! Definitely cool to see you guys out in the cold. I would definitely use those tools the next time my wife and I go hiking/camping. VA has so many awesome places to hike/camp. Thanks guys!
I used to work for a place called MOTENG (one of the first to back CRKT), we all agreed that CRKT were one of the best offshore knives made!
Your videos could seriously be a TV show. Awesome vids guys keep it up.
