I bought the Lifetime Warranty Alternator from O'reilly's with a ground wire attachment, got another Voltage Regulator and ran a wire from the Alternator to under the Voltage Regulator Screw on the Firewall. Worked like a Champ! Thanks for the tip of replacing both the Alternator and the Voltage Regulator at the same time.

These setups were on there for decades until the late 80's when they went to TBI. It seems to baffle the Ford/Chevy guys. The voltage regulator is case grounded and if it doesn't have a good ground it can heat up. The early 70's cars sometimes had the gel like material dripping from the back of the Voltage regulator down the inner fender. Make sure yours has a good ground too so it doesn't heat up and burn up too. Your ballast resistor there is to extend the life of the coil - I leave mine hooked up and carry a spare.
Good vans! If you take of it, it will take care of you! Happy new year!
