First off, I've watched a lot of your vids. So today when I was watching Chris D'Elia's podcast and saw your name I nearly choked. Ha, he calls out a comment you left on one of his videos. It's Episode 105 at 35:56.
Can't help but really appreciate all the awesome detailed info you constantly put out for us DIY people. I've learned so much and continue to learn from you even after 4 years. Keep up the awesome work Allyn. Supporter for life 4 sure!!
Loved listing to this while cleaning up fallen sticks on the fields in low 30 degree weather. Come on spring! And remember kids to keep your tip and shaft clean.
LCN You can also calibrate using the boil method at 212F. And try to keep your “tip” from bottoming out. Just another method then you don’t have to try to freeze a beer. 👍🏼
Just threw down my first ever app as a new homeowner. Scotts turf builder with crabgrass preventer, active ingreient is Pendimethalin. Don't have a clue what I'm doing but I hope it prevents thistles, last summer they were out of control.
I have been studying the prodiamine 65wdg 5 lb. I bought way to much I have found! But I live on a lot of land in which I mow. So I just measured some sections and am trying to figure out how much prodiamine to use per gallon. If zone a is 12,239 sq ft and zone b is 12980 sq ft and zone c is 11,050 sq ft and zone d is 1,742 sq ft. Also, I timed my sprayer like you said in one of your vids and did the math. I came up with 1:56 to spray one gallon per 1k sq ft. Thank you for your help Alan, I one day hope to have the knowledge you possess! Love your vids!
For your under-21 crowd (this means you, Jake The Lawn Kid!): Fill a glass with ice cubes, then add just enough water to cover them. Insert manual thermometer and read temperature. Adjust to 32° F, the temp. of ice water. This is how we do it in restaurants. When adjusted, drink the still -non-frozen beer at your leisure.
Love the soil temp talk! I started logging mine past 2yrs. It fluctuates with the nightime lows more than the highs here in coastal CT. Right now 4 inches deep its 32.5°. So frozen couple inches. Last year didnt hit 55° until end of April. (Cold & Snowy spring)
Glass of ice water then set it to 32° Fahrenheit, give it about 5 minutes then recheck and adjust again if needed. Great video allen. I have a question for you sir. I want your honest opinion aside from what sponsors want you to say. Humic acid(granular) humic acid dg, or humic12 luquid? Thank you sir! Long time subscriber since 2016.
Interesting note, up here in Michigan, Lowes is offering Sta-Green Crab Ex in a blue bag and it’s .38 Prodiamine with a 30-0-6 fert onboard for $45.00 (50 lb/15,000 sq ft)
Thank you for doing this with typical big box brands! I literally was looking for what I need to buy pre emergent wondering if the big box store stuff was good enough (not like my yard is that baller... yet).
Hi LCN, We are a lavender farn in North Arkansas. Last year Crabgrass and other weeds almost killed us. Pro65 will kill 90% of these weeds. However, we are working with other factors a residential lawn owner doesn't have. Our lavender is planted in rows on raised beds with a Sunbelt weed fabric and a 2-3" layer of limestone gravel. From what I understand there is no issue using Pro65 around our lavender. My question is concerning time. We absolutely wont have time to weed this year. So should we apply at .183/1000ft @ 3 months or 2 months? I wasnt sure if we could get away with more chemical longer since we arent working with a lawn, and our season goes past Labor day. (Any weeds will be visible popping up through the gravel) Thank you for time and experience. Lagrange Lavender.
you are probably going to want to get a product locally that is labeled for use on farms. That said, yes you can put down a higher application rate to get longer coverage. This pre-emergent has a yearly maximum and you can apply that max rate in one run early in spring.
Have you ever looked at corn gluten as an organic pre emergent? It also has some nice fertilizer NPK to kick start the lawn in spring. Just wondering what kind of weed control I can expect vs the chemical options you mention. I first found the LCN site from your hybrid organic strategy. With small kids running around my lawn all the time I'd like to try organic wherever possible
2020... right before spring weeds germination (feb-march) I put out Scott's "Step One" pre emergent with "crab grass preventer "(pre emergent).. and it completely solved my spring weeds & crab grass infestation I had for many years and just let it go.... St. Augustine lawn, E. Tx piney woods region.... Buy and put it out last week of Feb - first week or 2 of March here..... IT WORKS.... Interestingly the Step 2 bag said not for St. Augustine lawns but the Step One bag didn't hurt my lawn in the least.... in the last week of April after main germination, I put out the cheap Expert Gardener Walmart brand of 'Weed and Feed'... It kicked butt man! only 2 things it didn't kill and they were a grassy type of weed..... For the first time in many years I didn't have a lawn full of little flowers sticking up (Weed flowers lol) or clover and all kinds of salad mix mess junk.... I told my neighbor "You spend all that money on lawn care and you don't have any pretty flowers in your lawn. Look at my lawn, I got all kinds of colors of pretty flowers." He said " You ain't right in the head man..." ha (he's such an ass.......)
I started some Zoysia last season with plugs, they did very nice for the 1st year. My lawn is mostly Bermuda and would like to know what would be the best to keep the muda out of my zoysia for this coming year? Thank you
I live in SW Michigan, my lawn renovation germinated on JULY 19, 2021 will i be able to use Prodiamine for the first time this fall when ground temos hit 70 degrees? (I dont know how much time must pass to be safe.)??
LCN....we always used ice saturated water in a glass container and letting it sit for 20 minutes .... temperature should be 33° we use this method to calibrate our thermometers when doing automotive air-conditioning work.
I live in Jacksonville Fl. I have been in for 6 months I have baha'I grass they had a tree up front I had it dug up and I fill they space in with st Augustin and it spreading what type of fall fertilizer should I use one for St Augustin or bahai
Fortunately, you have enough material remaining from Publix to conduct another thermometer test. Then you should test it again to make sure you get the same reading. Try it with and without salt (salt may raise the temperature). Sorry about the cool temperatures in your lawn.
I just put down my prodiamine app from the bag i purchased off your site. I also put down an app of Milo. Im up here in Chicago and my question to you is, do those two apps have any effect on when I can start spot spraying some dandelions that I already see popping up?
I just installed zoysia a week ago(mid September) Dallas,Texas. Is it advisable to use fertilizer at this point together with pre emergent. The sod supplier advised me not to use any synthetic fertilizers I'm confused because I see my zoysia struggling in some parts of the yard. Please help..
I am doing a split application of prodiamine 65 wdg, 1st one at 55 deg. soil temp and then i put down Lesco fert. 24.0.8 2%fe. my question is how long after i put down the Lesco can i do my second app. of prodiamine 65 wdg? should i wait?
@@TheLawnCareNut the funny thing is that it was closer to real temp before you adjusted it. You made it less accurate :) Thats a plot twist right there.
I tested my digital thermometer the other day when Ginga was asking about soil temps. I tested in iced water and boiling water measure 211 for boiling water and 37 degrees for iced water inside at 70 degrees and 33 degrees outside 40 degrees... the ambinate around you is going to effect your soil temperature measurements
Hey @The Lawn Care Nut, ever thought about making a visual calendar for the N-EXT products and such, kind of like DoMyOwn has? It would be a swell addition to the new guides coming out soon.
ya sup Lawn Care Nut. I got your RGS and other NEXT from your site but I feel like I did it again. Warm March is bringing up the ground to 55 degrees so instead of waiting for my scale I just eyeballed the prodiamine. Get a Thermowerks Thermopen MK4 that you can use for BBQ, in the kitchen and the lawn. It's accurate to +/-0.7° at only takes 1-2 seconds to hit temp.
