I starred in the Donald Farmer segment of the anthology film, HI-8. In lieu of a tripod, Donald placed his camcorder on a stack of books. And he had work lights from Home Depot instead of industry-specific film lighting. Of course, you can't just attach a colored gel directly to a worklight; the gel will melt. So he taped the gels (mostly green) to his roommate's walking cane and held it in front of the worklight with one arm, using the other hand to work his camera on the stack of books. If I hadn't been there to see the one-man crew that is Donald Farmer, I wouldn't've believed it.

None of us have Hollywood aspirations: literally everyone you see in that movie is doing exactly what they set out to do!!!
@@NotQuiteFinalGirl It's been fascinating looking into this scene. Lots of the same actors, writers, directors, FX artists, and so on all working on one another's films. A little bit hobby, maybe a dash of various kinks, and part career. Getting to do what you love mainly for the fun of doing it.
Visual Vengeance screened both Scream Dream and Vampire Cop at Nitehawk with Q&A from Donald Farmer both times. VV should be releasing these both on blu-ray eventually. Some notes I had from the Q&As: Scream Dream - Really makes maximum use of the two original songs (which Donald told us was written by Rikk-O-Shay from only a title prompt and recorded in 2 hours for $300). Budget was confirmed at around $5000, seemingly because almost everyone frequented the night club they were filming and acted for free. Vampire Cop - the film was originally called Slow Kill and was just going to be a non-supernatural cop movie. One of the earlier producers for the film was also a music producer who got the group Borderline to record the opening theme, which also explains why they keep singing "…you're in the path of a Slow Killll…". This was apparently the only thing that producer contributed and he left production shortly after which allowed Donald to change the title of the film to Vampire Cop, which the other producers didn't seem to care about. Another producer insisted on him writing in their 'red headed daughter' into the film which I guess explains that character. Another producer asked to put one of Elvis' step-brothers in the movie, who Donald met with and said they actually had no interest in being in the movie. The film was shot on 16mm, transferred to 1 inch tape and then edited in an editing studio in Disneyland (what), saying they had to be careful what they had up on screen as tour groups of children would come by. After initial shooting was done, they insisted on a 90 minute runtime and more sexy scenes be added to the film, so they shot additional footage and I guess that explains the mentions of different cuts on the reviews here as he said he also had to take out some scenes he wanted. Donald admitted that he got a little too enamored with the slow mo effect with this movie, telling us that he was editing a movie that day and only included 1 slow mo scene in the whole movie. He says 'Video Vanguard' owns the rights to this film and hopes that it gets a blu-ray release soon.
@@HeeHawDonkey-w9f He ran for the hills the second he found out that this was gonna be a Donald Farmer themed episode. He’s currently hunkered down in a secret underground bunker located somewhere in the forests of Wisconsin until this horror show runs its course.
When Mike said that he was "embarassed for the sun" i immediately understood that feeling. Some people are so vile that they make me feel sad for the sun that has to give them light, and for the Earth that has to support their feet. I don't think that Donald Farmer is one of those people though, he's just a weirdo filmmaker as far as i know.
I feel kind of bad for all the genuine weirdos in filmmaking because the actually abusive weirdos have cast a suspicious light on everything. Farmer is definitely on the sleazy side but that doesn't automatically make him a sicko (as far as we know), or even all that unique among low-budget directors.
@@AmphibiousGentleman I drive by there all the time! Thankfully, no family members' graves desecrated. The Aquarium Restaurant at Opry Mills was my point of no plausible deniability. I also recognized some stores in the car commentary segments.
Best video in a while, you know the part where Mike revealed that Donald Farmer was his film maker pseudonym all along will go down in the hall of fame of RLM history.
For some reason I've never expected to hear the phrase "Sitting there like a dumbass in bisexual lighting" coming out of Jack's mouth. Although it also doesn't seem so out of character, tbh.
Same here. Had to jump back a second time to make sure I heard him right, and then noticed that the lighting in that room is similar to the bi-sexual pride flag/colors (pink, purple, blue). Something I *never* would have noticed without Jacks comment, and I'm Bi.
I was kinda curious if the phrase had a wikipedia or smth of that sort (since I knew they added gen Z slang)... It does. It's also verry funny, because according to it, the idea of "bisexual lighting" was made up by a Sherlock fan on tumblr in 2014. Incredible.
The amount of uploads lately from RLM is unreal, so thankful and very appreciative. Perfect timing in relation to my husband and I needing some laughs at the end of the day. Take care and be well everyone.
This series gives me strength, I honestly cannot stop watching. Jack has some of my favourite expressions and reactions through out the series. I personally enjoy it when he looks at the camara for a moment to plead with us the audience to save him from this.
"Young Mark Metcalf" is actually Academy Award winning actor Ray McKinnon (Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Apollo 13, Ford v Ferrari, Vampire Cop) Sometimes the schlock can produce good actors.
I just looked this up, he was married to Lisa Blount, the lead actress from Prince of Darkness and cowinner with him of the Academy Award for Best Short Film!
Rich is still waiting patiently by the phone for that phone call informing him that Mike has finally watched Farscape, everyday he sits and waits, and everyday he doesn't get that call a small piece of him dies.
I saw some interview with andy sedaris and he was saying something to the effect of "if we get the movie played once on Cinemax late night it covers the cost of the movie and we all get paid", but I don't know if Cinemax still does the late night soft core skin flicks
I shouldn’t know who Donald Farmer is. I really shouldn’t. I have no reason to know this, but I see a video, “Donald Farmer’s Market” and I know exactly who it’s about and what his work is: horrendous. This is what RLM has done to me! Thanks, guys.

There is something intrinsically more unsettling about Donald Farmer's newer movies. I believe the terrible camera quality of his older work makes it feel less creepy and less shitty to me, but I cannot explain why, maybe it's that the low quality of the picture goes with the very poor quality of everything else. The higher quality recording equipment in his newer projects makes the whole thing feel cheaper, ironically, and somehow creepier but I cannot put my finger on why I find it terrifying.
@@ZyxthePest - Maybe that's it, the newer ones just feel like p0rn. Not sure if it feels like a professional one or an amateur one, that's part of what has me unsettled.
The other thing is that everything is filmed handheld on a camcorder from like two feet away from the actors. Which means when the girls are taking off their clothes he's barely an arms length away. There is no "blocking" for most of the shots because he's just standing there practically breathing on them. It makes everything feel incredibly voyeuristic and creepy. The older movies weren't quite so claustrophobic. The old cameras were too heavy and required a tripod. Now he's free to really get in there. Ugh.
we thank you for you sacrifices into this man's vices. The custom soundtrack improvised by jay and then the guys in a movie with mostly silence is hilarious .
Debbie Does Demons would have been awesome if you slowly start to notice like actual ghosts and demons in the background and it ends with all the bad actors suddenly doing a lot better acting as they actually start getting killed for defiling a graveyard.
I know with 100% certainty that they pitched the episode to Rich, and immediately "noped" himself out of it Even if they insisted, I bet you he made up a wedding or a doctor's appointment or a funeral to get out of this one. And - you know what? ........ good for him (although not so good for poor Tim)
Can someone explain to me how all these people get their really bad movies funded for 25 years, and also are not destitute. Why am I not making bad movies for 25 years? And am destitute?
Mike may be the first person in documented history to express sympathy for The Sun, and it's all because it was put in a Donald Farmer movie against its will.
...I like Donald Farmer movies... No budget horror is my jam. It will never draw the interest of the masses, but the beauty of no budget means it will never die. Trying to make something out of literally nothing is great fodder for seeing things you'll never have imagined. It doesn't matter how jaded you might be, there's plenty in there that can blow your mind for the "pragmatic creativity" the process necessitates. It's an acquired taste (a slight understatement), and I gobble it up. TL;DR - Tubi is hands down the best streaming platform.

Low budget indie horror is definitely a niche thing but it is where my passion has always been and he’s def the king of it. I know what we do is laughable to some but those of us who do it often do it because we love it, not to “advance” ourselves as the guys wondered in the video.
Some notes I had from the Q&As:
Scream Dream - Really makes maximum use of the two original songs (which Donald told us was written by Rikk-O-Shay from only a title prompt and recorded in 2 hours for $300).

Ain't no way in hell Rich is sitting through a Donald Farmer fest. 🤣
I cant believe RLM posted on my birthday! The best present i can ask for. Keep doing god's work boys!

I was kinda curious if the phrase had a wikipedia or smth of that sort (since I knew they added gen Z slang)... It does. It's also verry funny, because according to it, the idea of "bisexual lighting" was made up by a Sherlock fan on tumblr in 2014. Incredible.

I keep forgetting that this is the best channel on youtube by far. I fucking love you guys! Movie nerds unite 🎉
"..because *I* am an expert pervert!" Can't argue with that
There is something intrinsically more unsettling about Donald Farmer's newer movies.
It's arguable that he had like...actual ideas back then, shitty as they were. Whereas now it's any excuse to do some skeezy shit.
The uncanny valley of shlock : The closer it looks like a real movie, the more disturbing it is ?
@@ZyxthePest - Maybe that's it, the newer ones just feel like p0rn. Not sure if it feels like a professional one or an amateur one, that's part of what has me unsettled.
@@armelior4610 - Nice theory, this is definitely some sort of abstract uncanny valley.
Ugh.
This is the greatest channel on all of TH-cam
we thank you for you sacrifices into this man's vices.
“It’s stupid but it’s tight” - Jack
“Donald Farmer said that a few times” - Jay

...I like Donald Farmer movies...
