  • We fix up our trusty old Sundolphin Canoe, with some swivel seats from Amazon, a Frabill Aerator, and some better Rod Holder placement.
Our Tailbones will thank us in the Long Run! Enjoy!

That was great! I just got a canoe like that one and tried it out. Did not have enough leg room. I was thinking something simpler but you have given me some ideas. Thanks

I wasn't sure what you meant by Florida man upgrade, then I see it and that would be South Carolina Man install if I had the canoe. That looks like you could be in it all day long.

lol well it was because I probably violated at least a dozen OSHA rules in there😂😂😂 but man I hope it helps my back because those little sling seats were pretty useless. Peace!!!

@@DCFloridasport I bet. They didn't look like I could be out there 8+ hours in it.

What was the name brand of the seats you chose. There are a lot of them on Amazon, some heavier than others, and none that match your pattern. Evidently, they all come without swivel plates, which are extra. What size? The Atwoods come in 7 inch and 6.25 inch, But some of the seats say they take a 5 in. "universal" unit. It's confusing. We have a vintage Scanoe, and those seats look comfortable for our vintage butts.

They were Sundgora seats with attwood quick releases and swivels, they are incredibly comfortable but make sure to get the front to back angle right, a bit tipped back, so you slide right back into it, otherwise youll find yourself leaning forward all day. Ive used the canoe a dozen times now and they are the best upgrade aside from the short shaft Newport vessels trolling motor which I bought open box on amazon for 140$

Great design!!! Go check out what I commented & told the other commenter because I give a get idea to how to stabilize those seat platforms without jeopardizing the walls of the canoe.
Thanks for the ideas you have given me on This video!!! Because it has gave me a plan on how to do my own Sun dolphin 14” SS Canoe I’m planning on buying today

Ran across your video while looking for a Sundolphine canoe at Dunhams sports. I am 6ft. 4 and 270. Do you think this canoe would work for me. I also want one with a stern for a trolling motor. Thanks P S I really enjoy your videos.....

Im 220 and 6-0 and its about right, I had a friend with one who is 6-4 255 and he was fine sitting in the stern since then he was able to move the 120lbs of batteries up to the front, I think as long as you keep the weight in the stern limited to just you and a motor and some gear youll be fine. It is always better to bring a friend to level it out but the Sundolphin is a rugged and larger canoe than most out there.
When I remodeled mine I shifted everything forward 10" as well so it rides almost level with just me and my gear and two 100ah lithium batteries(50lbs).
cheers and thanks for watching Harold!🙂

Those seats you took out that you call 10-15 lbs lighter are not when you put back seats and base weighing 30lbs , be careful guys don’t copy this renovation it is not a good example of how to it is exactly a good example of how not to , no offense just some very important key feature need attention here . The preformed seat section that were removed are the main structural supports of this particular canoe , they support the gunwales span and the floor of canoe front and back if you remove these you must somehow replace this structural support both ways across and down , a gusset from under the gunwale down to the seat platform would be sufficient for the floor support and that would keep it from flexing and in long term keep it from distorting and collapsing , he did install across member behind the front seat but it should be attached to gunwales , the plastic will not hold for long , the rear section also should have support bracing for gunwales , don’t get me wrong not intended for criticism he has some good ideas he just needs to finish the job , it really looks good !

I hear your concerns but really, We noticed zero flexing or twisting and the weight difference was unnoticeable as well. Performed great. Problem was the bases were too low for us though and I always have wanted a deck in the middle to stand on and cast from so after a couple dozen trips I decided to redo the entire canoe again a lot different and now its way nicer and much better equipped. Also have added two lion 100ah batteries and dropped about 80lbs there too lol
Its a fairly rigid canoe its not as flexible as some plastic canoes are. Heres part one of a series of short videos on how I did it, tight lines!
th-cam.com/video/rw1jWsac_Ys/w-d-xo.htmlsi=it6jtTj4qaM-qZw7 its more like a canoe shaped boat now 😂

That 1”x6” board he put horizontally behind the front seat he added the 2 rod holders to is sufficient enough support for the front. Then the entire middle support horizontal gusset where the live well is is still intacted where it originally was. Ok the rear of this canoe has a Transom which supports the rear and the 2 small platforms he built add a little horizontal support and downward support as they sit in the vessel. I personally don’t think they have anything to worry about unless the get to far off shore, or take it into a place like the Great Lakes or Santee Cooper which only a idiot would do. But as long as they’re using it in inlets and water ways, ponds and small lakes which Florida is full of I don’t think they’ll have any problem with his design! The only thing I would change is add 8 pieces of 1.5” wide flat iron with a bent L shape at the bottom of all 8 and add 4 of them to the front seat platform and the other 4 to the back seat platform. Run the flat iron to the top rail and drill a hole thru the flat iron & mount it with a stainless steel bolt and nut and at the bottom where each L bend is I’d drill a hole thru it and screw it to each corner of the wooden platform. So each flat iron bracket or he can use aluminum or stainless steel but aluminum will be best because it will be light weight and rust proof. But the 4 pieces of metal or aluminum will mount to all 4 corners of the seat platform and bend the L at the bottom so it lays flat on the platform and the metal lays flat against the side wall of the canoe to the top rail where it will be mounted to the Top rail. If it was me I’d use aluminum and I’d put a piece of foam weather stripping that has double sided peel and stick adhesive and add a piece of 1/4” weather strip foam behind each aluminum L brace and glue stick it to the metal and to the inside wall of the canoe as I was installing each L brace bracket . This will avoid the metal from wear and tear on the walls of the canoe. The L braces will hold that platform from moving and it gives the boat/canoe all its stability and then some. But
That’s the only thing I’d add to his design, I think it was a much needed up grade to make it more comfortable and more of an inexpensive fishing vessel for two. As a matter of fact I was headed to buy this same canoe today 4-18-2024 because it’s on sale at my local sporting goods dealer for $420 normally $500. So this video has gave me all the ideas I need to upgrade mine!
Great design idea to the guy who made this video & thanks for the ideas of how to do mine now. Reason I like it is it’s hard to find a canoe with a transom without going more expensive and buying a boat. But it’s perfect size for small bodies of waters small inlets, smaller calm rivers, ponds, lakes that won’t allow anything over a 9.9 horsepower engine so you’re not getting rocked to death. That’s what I intent on using mine for is those smaller fresh water bodies of water that don’t allow the big Boats. I kinda figure that’s where this guy is mainly taking this canoe.

@@CCRider5312 oh man your way behind , Florida Man has taken all that out and you should see his new remodel it is nice and very functional . All that stuff your gonna do , what your gonna do is ruin and destroy your boat , by the sound and looks of what I see and hear you are gonna do , just a little note , sometimes these revisions and ideas should be left for the professionals especially when a person has no clue of the aesthetic value and structure of a canoe , if you can find someone that can do it for you you will be better off ,some of this stuff being done to these canoes out here I can only do the smh with the omg they just totally ruined their canoe , do you have a friend that has any skillful experience or maybe a relative that could help you , anyhow good luck with all that
