Thatcher era 70's Scotland was an incredibly turbulent time for it's workforce as they were non-stop treated like shit by the British government. So a lot of the abuse the workers go through in this game is actually quite true to life. It got so bad, strikes and unions cropped up all over the country, primarily from workforces with dangerous jobs such as coal miners, factory workers and off-shore facility workers.
All this to say the devs fucking nailed the feeling of oppression and the barely-holding-it-together vibe of the rig. It's clear they actually did their homework and you can't not applaud them for that.

happy to see someone else appreciate the historical accuracy of the time period among the world of oil rigs in the north sea. it was such a perfectly created setting and atmosphere in that, let alone the rest of this masterpiece. i've seen a lot of people claiming to have the answer making up metaphors for what all this is supposed to mean in regards to the oil rig alone, not realizing that this was just real life and the result of governments and corporations at the time, certainly not made up or a metaphor. nautical industry in general has such an anomaly-like existence. it was the wild-west back in those days but in many ways, it still is today.

I love how the game gives you *just* enough clues to infer what happened with Rennick and the helicopter.
In his second intercom message after the incident he hesitantly adds at the end "don't touch that stuff" about the eldritch flesh. His dramatic tone shift into a sort of demure, embarrassed voice kinda reads to me like he's possibly ashamed of having to have learned that lesson first hand.
Soon after he's suddenly all on board with the evacuation, and can't wait to leave. Seems like he's panicking. It *could be* panic about the ongoing crisis, but I think it could also be because he touched the chtulhu tendrils, they infected him, he's starting to turn, and he wants to run.
Then the helicopter leaves, but it's already too late. He blobifies, the pilot probably decides a whole trip to the mainland with a blobmonster boss on board sounds like a horrible idea and tries to turn around but Rennick does a Rennick and attacks him, causing the whole thing to crash.

I kind of wish he had used the UK English subtitles, instead of the US English subtitles. While it can be difficult to understand the thick accents if you aren’t used to it, it’s easy to figure out with the UK subtitles on through context clues. Like the word, “ken” which clearly means “know” when used in the context of the sentence. But I suppose if you’re the one playing the game and scared out of your mind, perhaps it’s easier not to need to figure out context clues. 😂

@@gamingwithclark2830 Some of the best interactions I've seen in any game, really.
It's hard to put it in words beyond "It just feels natural and not forced."
None of the dialogue feels pushed in. No one's censoring themselves or avoiding using foul language (knowing the Scots, it's like tying an Italian's arms down. Can't talk anymore).
Manager is a nightmare (before and after). Swears like a sailor, which is fitting.
To repeat myself. No one goes out of their way to inject unnecessary politics (which would be incredibly unfitting for a game that takes place in the '70s).
No one really tries to "understand" the horrors. They just say "He's... He's not him anymore."
Which is a great paraphrasing. We don't have time to sit down and document these things. We probably don't have 10 minutes, let alone the time to write out an entire essay on these things. They simply *are*.
Naturally, if you were actively hiding from one of these things, you're probably not going out of your way to write it down or take notes. Muir's gone but he's "still in there." And after you. What are you going to do? Just refer to *it* by the voice you recognize.

1:48:56 You're correct about the safety issues not being too unrealistic. In the 70's the UK sector of the North Sea didn't have many regulations in regards to offshore installations. Safety was often overlooked to maximise production of oil/gas. The health and safety executive (UK OSHA) was only just formed in 1975, same year as this game's setting, and the safety rules for the offshore drilling industry were still in their infancy. Major reform happened after the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988, which I'm pretty sure this game takes reference from, given the company running Beira D, Cadal, isn't that far off of OpCal who owned Piper Alpha in real life.

I'd love to know what happens next. Even if the entity is killed, there is no way this clearly supernatural event is getting swept under the rug or missed. As Finley said several times, there were ships on the way, and there is no way they don't see the monstrosity that had taken over the rig. Society in that setting is bound to face major upheaval once the rig is looked into, and it makes me wish I could see what happens after.

    • @lumberedjack

i think the rig is just presumed to have suffered some sort of incident that rendered its radios inoperable and damaged its structure thus comprising its stability
theres no way anyone ever uncovers the truth on what actually occurred unless someone’s made it out, which from what im aware of nobody did, and no ships or aircraft arrived in time to properly see what happened otherwise caz and co wouldve been evacuated
also i dont think any radio contact was made after the initial explosion/damage caused by the drilling, meaning that rescue would be even more delayed with lack of a proper distress message or anything. (and given this in the 70s im pretty sure the brits could care less about a scottish oil rig disappearing)

    • @lumberedjack
      @lumberedjack หลายเดือนก่อน +20

actually i did a bit of research so heres what i got:
at barebones (aka source: bing) distance, we can assume beira is around 350+ miles away from shore, its most likely more but unless we ever get a direct real life equivalent to beira thats the best i got
now the HM coast guard used a bunch of birds throughout the 70s, but for this i used a sikorsky S-61 H-3, introduced in 1974 and retired 2008.
given that it takes around 2-5 minutes to prep a heli ill use 5 to delay it further.
now the total time we got is one hour, 44 minutes (5 added from prep time) and around 43 seconds.
but this is USELESS, because there wouldn’t be a helicopter sent despite it being the faster way to rescue due to bad weather (especially toward nightfall)
however: we can try to calculate a ship instead, now i’m not that much of a ship nerd, and its rather difficult to find 70s coast guard ships: i can atleast try to use a american coast guard cutter (even if it isnt british its really the best i can find and it’s like 3am)
ill use the uss edmington for reference, which entered service around 1971.
its speed is 21 mph (or 33 km/h) which is basically just 18 knots. using. now from what i can gather it takes 2-3 hours for a ship to prepare for departure if it wasnt so already. now im not sure if i disclosed this already but i am NO EXPERT when it comes to modern coast guard services and whatnot, so i have not a clue if cutters are prepared for departure 24/7 like military jets are, however: assuming it is already ready for departure then
it would take 16 hours for a cutter class to arrive, not accounting for the weather and the fact they have no clue anything’s even happening.
with added prep time you’d have to wait 19 hours for them to arrive.

    • @lumberedjack
      @lumberedjack หลายเดือนก่อน +12

so tl:dr: nobody knew due to lack of distress signal and even if they knew they couldnt be rescued without mostly everyone dead (or everyone already dead upon arrival) due to the weather

Even if it sinks it'll still be discovered later on during dives. Plus by the end the spire was lit up like a beacon, the entire sky had turned into something out of a Lovecraft horror (and there's no change as far as the eye can see).

He nearly lost his arm when a cable attached to a shipping container snapped and hit him right above the elbow. Earlier today I was watching a video made by a channel that does playthrough's of a game where they play for one hour(or I guess 90 minutes in the case of this game) and this means that they rarely finish a game(to my knowledge, this is the only video I have watched from them so that may be wrong) and I got very invested by the story and wanted to see the whole thing so I thought to myself "I'll just watch a video essay about it or I'll just look up a full Playthrough" so I did something else for about an hour or two and then when I get back to TH-cam I check my subscriptions page and this is what I find. All I can say is thank you.

I agree, I love watching the full game. I’ve been watching a few other people play this and it really breaks immersion when they release the video in parts. I can understand it more when the game is really long, like Alien Isolation long. But the length of this game is perfect for a really long video to play while doing some work or mindless chores that I can do at the same time. I watched Fisk do a live stream of this game the day it came out and really enjoyed seeing the full game at once. It’s kind of crazy how good this game is, as I rarely watch multiple play through sunless it’s really good!

I will admit, this game is true cosmic horror. We start the story knowing nothing about whatever it is they drilled into and we end the story not knowing still. Hell, we don't even know if Caz's sacrifice was worth it or not. Can a big explosion really put an end to eldritch entity beyond our understanding? This is like if The Thing was set in the middle of the ocean, and it's great.

Despite our protagonist dying at the end, this game has one of the best endings I've ever seen. Sacrificing yourself to save humanity, to save the ones you love, knowing what this *thing* does to people, and making sure nobody outside the rig has to see that. And those last few cutscenes. Caz loves his family and is happy with the time he had with them, even if it wasn't always smooth, he never gave up on his family.
Despite returning to the sea, I like to think that Caz is at peace, accepting what was done, and moving onwards.
(And that's just the ending, I have so much praise for the game itself, but I had written it all out and it's way too fuckin' long. So I'll leave with saying that this is one of the best horror games I've seen.)

This game is excellent! I've never felt such genuine concern over side characters I was certain were doomed from the start like this game inspired, it really humanized the characters. Every character felt like a person I could believe existed, and I didn't want most of them to perish even though I knew they would. Most horror games make all the characters eithe extremely bland or deliberately unlikable so you don't ultimately care when they die, but this one genuinely made me rout for everyone to make it out alive despite feeling like it was impossible.
Even Rennick's demise is foreshadowed by his narcissism! He reveals himself to be incapable of recognizing the possibility of facing real consequences for his actions when he brazenly fired a man larger and stronger than himself, with a history of rage driven violence, in an enclosed and unobserved place. He couldn't fathom how easily doing that could have seen him brutalized, never anticipated that his actions could actually hurt him; a personality trait that later dooms him, when he foolishly touched the meat before boarding a helicopter in a storm. And once he turns, his figurative big head becomes very literal. It's wonderful!

Very cool game! The monster design is great with a mix of body horror and alien qualities that make it very unsettling. I like how the structure continues to grow over time and you get the impression that all the monsters Caz fights are just byproducts of a much greater process; similarly, the hallucinations may be intentional or could simply be because the entity has mind-affecting components. The megastructure is very reminiscent of the Tree of Silver Wings from Destiny.

It doesn't feel intentional, in fact, nothing the creature does feels like an active choice. If the creature was trying to distort your perception maliciously, I'd expect mlre Dead Space style manipulation with it actively using the hallucinations to harm you or see its objectives (whatever those are) completed, yet it just shows you unrelated memories of loved ones without any attempt to capitalize on that distraction or distortion.

The references are solid man, name dropping totally normal places in glasgow 😂
Some of the references are too specific for a foreign audiance man, Suze talking about Barlinnie?
I dont even know if Scots from Aberdeen would get that reference😂

It feels like this game is an unexpected master piece as a cinematic experience. Not as a "gamey" game but as the experience you get from almost every other aspect. The graphics are amazing, the map feels realistic and might be true to a real oil rig structure, the characters feel like real people and not like waste material, the sound design is very solid and throughout great, the story is kinda simple but very well executed. The focussed on specific parts of it and made these good enough so you don't feel like much is missing because there is nothing to care about. Of course I would love to know what this entity was, if it really died at the end from the explosion and what consequences this all will have after that, but this story itself is finished. Great!
I didn't expect this to be so good when I saw the upload. First I thought: "OMG WHAT 4hours?!?!" After watching 30 minutes I was hooked and watched the whole thing in one evening.
PS: I think the alien structure was kinda inspired a little by Dead Space. Think about the spiral shape of the red marker. I liked the idea of this thing having these thin blade shaped things. Especially at the end it was very creppy that you could see it pulsing and hear it beating like a heart.

Just thought of something. A game like Voices Of The Void, but instead you're on some old derelict rig that's turned into a marine research station would be amazing.
Instead of satellites looking up into space, you're watching deepsea cameras and sonars pointed down into the abyss. Studying sealife, underwater seismic readings and other things, and catching occasional glimpses of things that don't belong. Maybe some events with eldritch/lovecraftian horrors from the deep.
    Voices Of The Deep.
I'd kill for a game like that. Even by the same dev, if possible. I know they'd kill it for sure.

YES! First moment I saw the trailer I was like "damn I hope the Librarian Plays this" lol
one thing I find interesting is the Muir Creature, it looks like its part Crustacean, Bobbitworm, and maybe (not just it but as a whole) part deep sea worm or mollusk, so maybe this "thing" does the same stuff that...well..."The Thing" does where it can mix DNA and features of past victims into one?
who knows, all I know is this game is so fascinating, I kinda hope they make another game in the same universe, but that may ruin some of the mystique so ehhhh
EDIT: also now I'm really confused by something...these things (not spoiling anything specific) don't seem to actually survive when put under water for long periods, so maybe they drilled into some "cavern" under the seabed where it had remained dormant for so long?...
also it makes me realize that a game based on Paul Gallico's "The Poseidon Adventure" of 1969 would be absolutely amazing, trying to navigate a sinking, exploding, and burning upside down ocean liner...One can dream haha

I can't stress out enough how much more you feel the pain whenever a game or a movie is showing a couple get departed from each other when you are not single. You imagine yourself in the place of the character who just wants to go back to his wife or partner and it hurts man. The thought alone of being departed from my wife in such ways is just something that scares me a lot. That's why one perspective of the horrors of this game is the man not being able to go back to his family. Hits home.
