I imagine an episode of attempting to make fire using various friction fire tools/techniques. Much like this episode, this is only as complicated as you make it. You could source all your supplies from the MR headquarters, or buy pre-made kits. Personally I'd like to see a solid attempt at using only what you can find in the woods around you, before eventually failing, and resorting to the ideal kit.
To be fair to you guys, the tiny ferro rod in a lighter is colloquially referred to as the “flint” even though it’s not made of flint. If you were to purchase replacements for a zippo lighter, for example, they would be advertised as flints. I’d love to see you guys try to do the flash bang thing with a full sized ferro rod. A quick tip for using a ferro rod: anchor the scraper in place over the tinder, and drag the ferro rod against it instead of the other way around. Helps keep the sparks where you want them without risking knocking over your tinder bundle. A ferro rod isn’t as fast or convenient as a lighter, but it will work reliably in more weather conditions if you know how to use it. Lighters are susceptible to cold, wet, and/or wind.
I want them to do a ping pong ball smoke bomba, and been asking for years... still asking to this day. They should just do the complete *anarchist cookbook* at this point, cause that's where a majority of these things are actually from. There's a vice episode you guys should see, just youtube search anarchists cookbook and you'll find a vice episode.
It's because you can really sense their friendship and how much they really enjoy doing stuff together. Wholesome shit like that you can just feel and get 2nd hand enjoyment
You missed this? It's a compilation video of their past videos. They've been doing a ton of compilations of past videos lately. They're not 'back' yet... I'm wishing they'd hurry up and get 'back'. This one includes stuff from 4 years ago. th-cam.com/video/Zo430AIiy2U/w-d-xo.html for reference. Another part of it from a year ago: th-cam.com/video/WwHpJeZ3Jig/w-d-xo.html . I'm not sure why people keep thinking these are 'new videos'.
Ferro rod hack. Striker pushing toward the teepee, teepee knock over… striker held at the yak hair, pull rod away… motion happens away from the teepee. You guys rock. It’s been really fun to watch the show morph from scam school over the years. Keep it up, you rock.
I once started a campfire using a magnifying compact mirror (which is concave) a girl brought with her, because all our fire-starting equipment had fallen into the river when we canoed into the site. Just had to get the sun and the focal point of the mirror aligned right to start some tinder we collected at the site. Worked pretty much like a mini solar cooker.
Imagine a world where this man Brian is an expert fire eater, and yet has no idea exactly how to make it, how it works, etc... ...it'd almost be like eating food that you had absolutely no idea what it really was, where it came from, w------

most types of potato chips, chicorones, and especially wheat chips are all highly flammable. I have gone camping for over 60 trips where I used Potassium as my fire starter, use about 1/4 teaspoon potassium and three of four drops of anti-freeze, the only problem is that it doesnt work well under 48 degrees, have fun friends
Brian Brian Brian... So the teepee method you were right, it acts like a furnace. You know what the furnace needs?! AIR! Without oxygen, fire will not... fire... You want the flame to start as fully as possible, before adding more fuel: "carbon". If you don't you douse and smother the flame. Love you guys, glad more full length videos are coming out again.
You missed my favorite method. THE FIRE PISTON! It's very sciencey. Watched a jungle dwelling person in the middle of nowhere light his Marlboro with one and had to try it myself. Yes the tribe had Marlboros in the middle of the jungle but no lighters.
So one helpful tip to avoid knocking the tinder like in 8:30 is to hold the metal part near the tinder and pull the ferro rod away quickly. This dumps all the sparks in one place and you aren't having to rebuild your pile of tinder.
I’ve been making and using char cloth since I was a Jr. in high school 20+ years ago, and a magnifying glass more then 30 years. This video takes me back to my youth. Be careful with the potassium permanganate and glycerin smoke, it’s quite toxic to breathe
You guys 100% need to get in touch with a local bushcraft expert. It's perfect for this channel. You can learn about how to identify natural materials good to make fires with (such as how to harvest fatwood, using birch bark, etc). And of course, making natural shelters. You've already covered some of the topics, but I'm certain there's plenty more to cover
Rules for tools. One is none The first tool to fail is likely the one you use the least Something is better than nothing, and never replace unless its a massive improvement to the current tool Know the materials and specific function of both the tools and materials involved When carrying multiple tools, go for varying functions rather than a bunch of disposable replacements for the same tool.
Potassium permanganate is used in the water treatment industry as an oxidant. I've always wanted to try pouring out on a fire. So thanks for doing it for me.
Great video guys! My personal fav way to start fires is with a bic and a handful of Doritos to get things going. Foolproof and never go camping without them 🔥😃
If you poke the tip of the ferro rod into the ground (or against a rock) and put a bit of weight against it, then it will stay still while you strike sparks from it. Having both the rod and the striker free and unsupported except for your hands makes it much more difficult to control where the sparks go. Also holding the striker at closer to a 90-degree angle to the rod works better for me - if you try to "shave off" bits of the rod, it tends to dig in and chatter, which makes things less consistent and harder to control.
I was an eagle scout as a child. (Transwoman, I was treated as a boy at the time) My memories? I made a tent the fastest, under a minute! I almost got the most expensive prize for our 2007 peanut sales. Sell peanuts and other products, every dollar is so many points. We were given a catalouge. From page one to the end were prizes, each with a different point value. We didn't have to spend points. It was more like the first battle pass. Earn enough points. You get the thing. 100 for the first. 200 for the second. Not 300 total. 200 total. The biggest was 5000, which I think was somewhere around $800 the way we earned points. I got 4984. I was literally so close and the 1 person who earned the prize wast rich neighbor. He offered to give me the top prize cause he could buy another with allowance money. The scout leader decided he wasn't eligible for any prizes because he said that. Btw the prize was like the coolest thing to any middle schooler at the time. It was like a super expensive thing. Most of the other prizes, even the second place prize, where cheap. Maybe a total of $100 for everything in the catalog excluding the top prize (which is what I earned) The top prize was like something worth $1500.
Also the first prize was 10 points. The second to last prize was only 500. There was a 1000 point difference between the biggest prize and the second biggest. It was made to earn profit with as little cost. They did not expect the have to give the biggest prize. They literally gave everybody the first few even if they didn't earn it because they already bought them. They originally said they had to order the top prize for my neighbor but I think they really took his eligibility away just to avoid the cost, not what he said.
These guys using ferro rods backwards is adorable. You want to stick the Ferro rod all the way into the material and the scraper right next to the material, Then hold the scraper and pull the rod. All your sparks will land in a concentrated space this way
I use ferro rods in my chem lab all the time. They're particularly effective when you have flammable vapors. KMnO4 is one of my favorite oxidizing agents. You just need to make sure you have something to react with oxygen that will come off. I usually use it in slightly acidic water because the H+ react with the O2- and form water. Another fun fire starter is to use powder pool chlorine and brake fluid. Make sure you don't use old brake fluid.
Ah, this episode comes a day after I started a winter fire to BBQ by. So glad I did a Steve Wallis bush-crafted chemical firelog fire, and the fuckton of dry backup kindling and wood to put on once that and the paper/cardboard recycling I needed to burn were almost done.
I didn't know this for a long time as well but you hold the knife still and pull the rod backwards. That way you can spark right in the center and know smack it with your knife
I love how brian's like this seems like a bad idea when using the chemical mixture, but like they've been starting fires that hang off the side of their metal container with tons of dried dead leaves literally all over. They didn't bother to clean up the area to make it safe or anything, they're lucky they didn't start a property fire out in those sparse woods. To everyone else clean up your fire making area so it doesn't spread outside of it.
There's one that involves pool shock and brake fluid. Y'all should look into that one. Saw it done once. Dope Af, like the glycerin thing, just more.... Exciting.
I love how at the far camera you can see the tree shadow right over where the magnifying glass is, like if they switched the glass could have worked better. Side note I wish you'd have included for unconventional implements of pyrogenesis, you can use a plastic bag with water inside the same as a magnifying glass.
Brian, tilt the striker forward at a 45 degree angle and it will shed more sparks, also run your finger over the edge of the striker (not the rod) it should have a sharper edge on one side. It will work WAY better
That solar cigarette lighter, you can STILL buy them. Search Wish, Alibabba, etc. I've lit a cigarette from them, but you can also put charcloth or the like and in them to light a fire.
It's a compilation video of some of their old content, if you enjoyed it, definitely go back and view their stuff from the start. Part of this one was 4 years ago, so you'll have to go back quite a bit, but they used to do lots of trying things out.
Hey Brian, i will be in texas in March. Im currently in -20° F and could build a fire easily with just whats available in the woods, no extra tools needed. I'd love to have a chance to chat with you about your safety issues (unless you're playing them up like TopGear) and the bushcraft/resiliency fun stuff that every Modern Rogue should know. I am a former Airforce Firefighter, currently working for one of the biggest fishing resorts in Minnesota. Ive got years of experience in the woods and doing crazy stunts safely (im safely wearing a beard in my profile pic ....while breathing fire) Grew up with 7 older brothers who really tried every crazy guy thing there is and we're all still alive. So ive definitely got a good track record.
The edge of what you use to strike the ferro rod has to be a 90° angle. You can use basically anything that's harder than the ferro rod itself. And there are several ways to strike it.
Had the same problem. The farrow rods work better when you plant them into the center of your tinder and strike downwards. Also, why are you trying to start a fire on a plastic cooler?
Ok. So. I was a boyscout for years, about 15 years ago. I never got very far, first class or so. Many fires were started around me, can't say I ever started one successfully. The way they teach boyscouts, it's like "make a careful structure, carefully layer three kinds of kindling, thoughtfully shave and shape your wood..." etc and I only ever saw piddling sparks that died until the leaders brought out lighter fluid and lighters. Then last summer I went camping with a real outdoors buddy and he just piled a bunch of random shit off the ground and had a huge roaring fire in minutes. Moral of the story is, believe the tales of houses going up in minutes and just throw shit in a fire pit and don't waste your time carefully carving a dozen pieces of tinder that won't light anyway.
Per Brian a few comments up We originally ran them as a week of episodes (like desperate defense), but wanted to get them in a collection for all the new folks joining the channel. -Brian
I had a science book growing up that had a Fresnel lens that was about the size of a sheet of paper. It was great for starting fires and it packed easily. I wonder if that book still comes with it...
The charcloth was neat. But the glycerin and the potassium per manganate was hands down the silliest way to start a fire. Just poor some laxative on some metal dust.
I would love to watch an episode where it's just the two of them, trying to survive a day in the wild. Just a backpack with things from their bug out bags and 24 hours in the wilderness.

You guys should make another video after you’ve practiced fire making for a few months and then compare it to this video to teach folks what you’ve discovered. Showing people how important practicing skills is is how we become better rogues!
To be fair, it is known as a "flint bomb" when you use the ferrocerium from a lighter and toss it on the ground. Surprised you guys haven't done the ping pong ball smoke bomba, You guys should search the anarchist cookbook, you guys already done a ton of things from it so you might as well explore the book.
Well yea, the idea is to just carry a lighter, but lighters run out of fuel, and the little flint runs out, and things just happen. You carry multiple different ways of starting fire in your kits just in case something happens to one of them
Why was this reuploaded? I'm guessing there might of been something that got demonetized in the original upload, but I haven't watched it in so long that I'm not sure.
They've been doing a lot of these compilations of their older videos lately. Most of their recent content has been these types of compilations. I'm not sure why they're doing it, either. Maybe they're taking a break, or wanting to show some of the old stuff to new viewers.
Me : I haven't checked in on Brian Brushwood in a while I wonder what he is up to Brian : "I am gonna made an ad about Erectile Dysfunction and call my daughter on it" Me : "The most Surprising aspect of this is that I did not see this coming."
What an all over GREAT idea to do a video where you play around with chemicals to light a fire like in the middle of the woods... oO As for the title: You meant two rather mundane and one slightly offbeat ways to make fire, right?

I am a former Airforce Firefighter, currently working for one of the biggest fishing resorts in Minnesota.
Ive got years of experience in the woods and doing crazy stunts safely (im safely wearing a beard in my profile pic ....while breathing fire)
Grew up with 7 older brothers who really tried every crazy guy thing there is and we're all still alive. So ive definitely got a good track record.
I laughed my ass off and liked the video immediately after Jason joke. “So you forgot a lighter?” 😂😂😂
HOW’D YOU GUYS KNOW I’M LOOKING INTO THIS?! YT algorithm is getting CREEPY.
Ferrocium is also called Auermetall. Invented in Germany by Carl Auer von Welsbach in 1903.
Not complaining, but why the re-upload?
Per Brian a few comments up
We originally ran them as a week of episodes (like desperate defense), but wanted to get them in a collection for all the new folks joining the channel.
The "let me go pee in a bag" part caught me so off guard, was not expecting that reference oml
With the ferrocerium rods, it's better to hold your "steel" steady, and draw back your "flint". Then you can get it right down next to the tinder.
'should have made me as a robot' haha that was so cute xD
I think I've finally hit the point where I'm a little concerned about these two being unsupervised.
I would love to watch an episode where it's just the two of them, trying to survive a day in the wild. Just a backpack with things from their bug out bags and 24 hours in the wilderness.
A video of fire, 100% chance the injury counter gets reset.
video hasn't been out yet longer than the video's duration, so sure I'll bet five Internet Dollars that they hurt themselves
It's a compilation video of their older stuff, counter's been reset quite a lot since these videos were actually made.
@@firedale2002 are you sure this is a compilation video, friend? because it looks like all those things they tried were done in one sitting. perhaps you meant to post that comment on a different video
@@6Qubed Absolutely not, he is correct. These are 3 vids from 4 years ago

Lighters work for the most part unless you are in EXTREME cold climates. The issue being that the fluid inside the lighter freezes.
You guys should make another video after you’ve practiced fire making for a few months and then compare it to this video to teach folks what you’ve discovered. Showing people how important practicing skills is is how we become better rogues!
This video is a compilation video of their old videos, some of it dating back 4 years... they've had quite a lot of practice since then.
To be fair, it is known as a "flint bomb" when you use the ferrocerium from a lighter and toss it on the ground.
Surprised you guys haven't done the ping pong ball smoke bomba,
You guys should search the anarchist cookbook, you guys already done a ton of things from it so you might as well explore the book.
You really want these guys making potassium triiodide crystals?
Actually, ok. That would be pretty cool.
Let's make a fire using a magnifying glass in the shadiest place we can find.
Well yea, the idea is to just carry a lighter, but lighters run out of fuel, and the little flint runs out, and things just happen. You carry multiple different ways of starting fire in your kits just in case something happens to one of them
Grant Thompson to that experiment weather ferrocene rod and it does spark just like the small ones do but more
Why was this reuploaded? I'm guessing there might of been something that got demonetized in the original upload, but I haven't watched it in so long that I'm not sure.
They've been doing a lot of these compilations of their older videos lately. Most of their recent content has been these types of compilations. I'm not sure why they're doing it, either. Maybe they're taking a break, or wanting to show some of the old stuff to new viewers.
Cool! 🔥🔥
Me : I haven't checked in on Brian Brushwood in a while I wonder what he is up to
Brian : "I am gonna made an ad about Erectile Dysfunction and call my daughter on it"
Me : "The most Surprising aspect of this is that I did not see this coming."
hahahhahaha
I just recently took a class where our instructor drilled a hole in our lighter.
What an all over GREAT idea to do a video where you play around with chemicals to light a fire like in the middle of the woods... oO
As for the title: You meant two rather mundane and one slightly offbeat ways to make fire, right?
