    • @xjunkxyrdxdog89
      @xjunkxyrdxdog89 4 ปีที่แล้ว +129

      He over loaded the pit.
      Someone trying to hide wouldn't use as much fuel at once.
      You would normally pile the excavated earth around the hole.
      Finally, you would choose a location thats at least partially obstructed.
      The main benefit comes from the near total lack of smoke, not hidden light. The high airflow and temperature allows the fuel to be burned more completely resulting in a very light smoke. In the great plains a smokey fire would be visible over the horizon.

    • @DanielTorres-vu3gt

      one good example of a more discreet dakota fire pit is in the Steve Wallis video where he goes camping along the side of a river. He builds a dakota fire pit and partially covers it so, while he still has heat, the light and smoke are less noticeable.

    Hey, this is a topic I'm very experienced with! I've made more Dakota fire pits than I can remember. I've made them in the summer and winter, even in snow.
    The pit Jason made is hilariously massive. He basically just dug a normal fire pit with a stone over part of it. The order of timber really doesn't matter at all, just do what is consistent for you. Ill explain how I make mine and you can take it for what it's worth
    First, you get your titanium camp spoon from your mess kit, and your pot. Dig with the spoon to make a cylinder shaped hole that your pot fits on, but doesn't fall it. The hole should be up to your elbow for depth. Then you start the air hole. You can make it upwind, but it doesn't matter. Once the fire starts, air will be SUCKED into the hole. You start the air hole about 4 or 5 inches away, and angle it so it reaches to the bottom of the fire hole. You also dig the air hole with your spoon, and you make it as small in diameter as you can comfortably do, usually just enough to fit your fist in. Then your pour some calcium carbide into the bottom of the fire hole (pick it up at army surplus). If it's summer, pour a few ounces of water in the fire hole, winter toss in snow. Throw some kindling in followed by match or sparks. The gas from the wet calcium carbide will ignite and basically impossible to extinguish. After you have coals and air audibly is being sucked into the hole, you set your pot on to cook.
    This is the type of fire you run when fire isn't allowed. Also make sure you clear brush a foot around the opening, unlike these guys did lol

    I hope everyone realizes that the editing on this show (specifically, all of those little subtitles) are way more work than they first appear. For what is on screen for only about a second or two, the editor is probably spending the better part of an hour if it's even a little bit graphical. But also, editing something where you really have to pay attention to the content and then match stuff to it uses so much of your brain, and it's not the same as your editing brain. IDK, I've been an amateur editor for the last 15 years or so and whenever I notice how much work the editor does on this channel I wanna give a shoutout. Pay them more, Brian!

    • @nymalous3428
      @nymalous3428 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I try to thank the editors in my comments. Unfortunately, good editing is usually not very noticeable (it's kind of the point). On this channel, the editing is usually great. In editing my own videos (very infrequently, but starting way back in 2002/2003) I have found what you said to be very true. (Editors: put what you want on your pizza!)

    • @alwaysfallingshort
      @alwaysfallingshort 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Tristan Burke Oh definitely (and that probably took a bit of work). I just mean when they add things like the graphics from wikipedia articles, he often does some photoshop work on them. Plus even adding all of those templates is time consuming, sometimes something doesn't look right and you have to manually tweak it.

  • @xjunkxyrdxdog89

    "We're going to have to get the hose"
    You've missed a feature of the Dakota fire pit... when you dig the pit, you should pile up the excavated material around the rim of the hole. This further shields the fuel from the wind, and allows you to quickly extinguish the fire by smothering it.

Maybe if Jason had to start digging the hole when Brian Started making his fire, the results would have been less obvious.

    Jason, your style of fire lay is called an upside down fire-you guys should consider that above ground too! Set it and forget it, it's got some pretty quick coals-it's my go-to way to make a fire now!! Not the same benefits like in the dakota fire pit, but still nice.

    Is this the same principle as a Rocket Stove where it draws the air through?
    Is there an outdoors way to make a fire whereby the smoke is minimised? You mentioned the "the guys arrive and you kick soil on" etc. and a fire with minimal smoke would be ideal there.

    I've been silently wanting them to do this, this is probably my favorite type of fire pit, if you have a posthole digger, even better, you can get the holes down in the ground much easier, if this is near a temporary militia installation or large scale camp...

    In a wind, I find the teepee isn't the best way to start a fire. Try a "log cabin" style fire - lay the kindling down in that kind of pattern, you want to save your largest kindling, but build it large to small. Put your firestarter in the middle, then build a roof from larger kindling you set aside. Place one or two fuel logs on the top. When it gets going the cabin will collapse, and you want the logs to land in the middle of the fire, so position them accordingly (that does take practice, try placing them on after the kindling has caught). This keeps the starter from blowing around, while protecting it from the wind a bit better. The roof and small kindling help to trap the hot air against the easier-to-light twigs. And, in the wind especially, once the walls have caught, the bigger gaps near the bottom function similarly to the fire pit, feeding oxygen to the flames above them

    Having all the materials laid out before starting a fire generally makes things way easier. You can get a fire going in about 5 minutes or less if you have favorable conditions.

    I have an idea you guys should test, I do t quite remember where I heard it but the idea was that you could take a piece of paper and line the barrel of a gun with it and it would keep the rifling from leaving marks on the bullet

    Love your bit at the begging here. Fun fact I actually got to use the line 'it's not what it looks like'... I had a house full of half clothed ladies, someone was wearing a giraffe onesie the rest mostly in their underwear and our model had just put on a robe, for a drawing evening. At some point someone thought we needed to have some pizza delivered. The guy dropping off the food looked genuinely unsure of what he had just walked into ...

    I like how you've tested ancient techniques and then used a blowtorch to start the fire 😂 with the exposed fire during windy conditions it would have been fairly impossible to start anything with old methods. The Dakota firepit on the other hand was often used as an underground cooking oven: once obtained the burning ashes you put your meat wrapped in something (aluminium nowadays) on top of them, then bury everything and come back after 5 to 8 hours. Dinneeeer's reaaaady!

  • @rvaughan74
    @rvaughan74 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good to know about the Dakota Firepit. I wonder how well an above-ground stone one would work?

  • @Garfunkels_Funky_Uncle
    @Garfunkels_Funky_Uncle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Changling struck and took Jason!
    btw Dakota firepit air vents don't necessarily have to face the wind, the heat from the fire will pull air through it.

    So out of curiosity, you said it the Dakota fire pit benefits from the wind the way it's designed, but how well would this work on a relatively calm day or say you're deeper in the woods with practically no wind at all? (being blocked from the trees)
