    Thanks again for showing this. I like how you can make do with the components you have and explain how it works. I know sometimes lower velocity buck patterns better but out of curiosity if you one day get a crono it would be neat to see how fast you could get something like 8 pellet 0000 out of 10g

    I was wondering if you water / weather proof any of your hand loads? I know that dribbling candle wax on top of the shot before crimping helps. What all do you do to protect your loads? Have you ever submerged a load for testing? What are some of your best black powder / pyrodex loads? I think all that might make a good video. Keep up the good work bro.

      Yeah I seal them with clear mail polish if they need it. Paul Harrell has a really good video about submerged Shotshells.

    The whole over powder card for some wads is actually great advice for new reloaders.. I had to figure this issue out on my own. One thing I would add is if the Gas seal on the wad has a deep concave/pocket/lip I will either trim that lip off the gas seal or fill it with fiber to avoid leaving a void space. important to avoid momentary free expansion of gas taking up empty space before pushing on the payload. In my mind (and I could be wrong) this could lead to a slight over pressure situation. But mainly it's the difference between a good crimp and or a couple more pellets on the top end.

      Lately I’ve been putting thin nitro cards over the powder if I use loose fitting wads.

      That is a very interesting point. In my mind, the extra expansion room would lower pressures as it has more time to expand. This gave me more to think about when understanding pressure. Nice thinking point friend!👍😁

    • @Oldmanwithagoldpan
      @Oldmanwithagoldpan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vdog4799 I'm actually not sure but I imagine that if the expanding gas suddenly hits a wall it would cause a spike in pressure as it has to suddenly start pushing mass instead of pushing that same mass from the start of expansion .. I could be wrong and I am planning to research this topic when I have a little time.

      Back then I didn’t know any better and was cramming the stock into my arm as hard as I could and death gripping the gun. I was letting my arm eat all of the recoil with no give. Now I just rest the stock against my arm with little pressure and I pull forward slightly with my supporting hand to mitigate recoil into my arm and just let the gun do what it’s gonna do. I ride the recoil. No more bruises and no pain unless I’m shooting single shots with magnum loads.

    I would love to talk to ya personally about making some high recoil shells, as well as mixed buckshot loads from #1-4 Buck in 3" 12 Gauge for home defense with reduced risk of penetration. I only buy 12 Gauge shotguns, but am looking for a 10G. Even with my Remington TAC14 Lupara Grip, I love shooting Magnum buck and slugs from it aimed, I bought a XS Big Dot sight barrel for mine. It can be spicy on the wrists. That is for sure. But is quite tolerable, I trained for many years in Bujinkan Ninjutsu that teaches joint strength in workouts so that may have helped me. I love them all day and night in my Pump SXP and Saiga Clone. In my H&R breakaction light weight your boxing with it and its a fun ride all day and night as well. I get some really nice patterns out of its milled full choke with buck of smaller diameter than 00.

    Would 28grain Hodgdon Longshot with 30 grams of 2.4mm shot be a good load for gymnastics pigeons? Would 30 grain Hodgdon with 30 grams of 2.4 mm also work against !?

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s too light of a load I would think. Pressure might be way to low to reliably function. That would be 7.5 shot. Shot size doesn’t matter, 1 ounce of lead is 1 ounce of lead. You would need a different powder as that’s basically a 1 1/16 ounce load which is very light for 12 gauge. Longshot will work but I’d start at 34 grains.

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For an 8 pellet 000 buck load I’d use 32 grains of longshot if you want recoil. Take your wad and cut off the shot cup and about half the piston section, if I’m thinking of the right wad. The 12v023 is the light target wad isn’t? Tall piston section with short shot cup? I’d recommend getting claybuster cb1138-12 wads from ballistic products, and the gualandi green wad. Maybe some 12 gauge .70 nitro cards to go over your powder for the claybuster wads if you want to use them. 000 buck will stack by 2’s in that wad if you have .35 caliber instead of .36. Or you could grab a bag of x12x gas seals and use 1/2” fiber cushion wads.

      8 mo later *:* I've tried some shortys - They double feed in my semi auto and in my pump the ejection is tempramental.
      But 21 gr of #4 buckshot is a tightly stacked 1 oz load over a powder charge that's generally used for 2-3/4 1 oz load.
      Use a BP gas seal or X12X under a cork or felt cushion.
