I love the whole new range of Hyundai fleet that is emerging... the N series definitely beautiful to behold...i would have liked the lower lip/spoiler to slightly protrude a little more forward away from the bumper
Hyundai isn't playing games anymore. For FWD car it launched pretty solidly and the power to weight ratio and better torque and power while still being cheaper. Now I just want the i30N
The fact that they even used a automatic transmission wrx is obsurd because the wrx has been a manual only car till just a few years ago. That is in no way a true representation of what the wrx is. The automatic ones were just made to satisfy a group of consumers. It's like running a base model against the top model of another brand.
The i30n gained because it made more power and possibly* weighed less, because it lacks awd. A cvt would be slow in a roll race because you'll need to wait for the transmission to adjust the ratios. But once the car is in its powerband a cvt should be on par with a dct in a straight line because it keeps the car in its powerband and doesn't require shifting.
Subaru needs to develop or outsource their own DCT transmission in case they want to maintain its old WRC fame/ heritage. CVT for their sports car is just lazy.. or cheap No matter how they tune it
The ultimate decider is how usable the power is on the road, and how the power is accessible in the low end of the RPM range for quick passes. Nobody drag races and drives wide open throttle on the road. These races are fun to watch. It are stupid pointless.
I owned a DCT i30N for 6 months, what an epic car. Not so much as a daily for my 500kms a week… I sold it for a CX5. Yeh I know, boring but practical. I think it’s an easy choice here. If it’s your daily the WRX is a no brainer. If it’s for pure fun on the weekends the i30N is the no brainer there.
Personally think that the 2.4 boxer will make tons of power on tunes, more than the 2.0s will ever get. You might not get it from the factory, but the aftermarket is what will make the subaru 2.4s king of the hot 4s
Did you preload the CVT? You've got to press the gas to the floor while holding the brake to place the WRX into launch mode. The CVT will Max out at 6000 RPM and will not shift. We do this test and I bet the WRX wins
Thanks for the video and doing the drag comparrison. Subaru seems to be no longer interested in the motor enthusiasts, now its just Big screens, comfort and quiet cars. Unless Toyota is doing this on purpose to give more highlight on their GR Range now.
I've blown many I30N's away with my 2002 WRX./ Tuned to 210 KW and 382 NM at the wheels, fully dyno tuned and tested. And its a beffed up 5 spd manual.
The wrx reacts a good 1/2 sec earlier if you look at 3.38 the WRX rolls out half a meter before the hyundai driver reacts . Plus the FWD i30n launched over a painted surface was already spinning . maybe do this run a few times .If we are comparing drivers this is a good run for the WRX driver but this is a car comparison .If both cars left at the same on time warm tires not over a painted surface .i think the i30n would have performed much better
Yo Ash, any chance of hooking up data logging kit, too measure real world times vs manufacturers claims, 0-100, 400m etc: Would make interesting viewing 🙏🙏
@Alex bro I drive a wrx. Keeping it at 5800 rpms isn't doing you any favors. You're basically out of boost range at that point! The wrx is great but subaru has left it in the past and has no plans for innovation.
The New Subaru WRX isn't really a hardcore performance machine as it used to be. On the other hand the Hyundai i30 N has a far better power to weight ratio and it shows. The i30 N for me over the WRX.
Good race, good video but quiet short.... It would be nice to have about 10 minutes video. You can add multiple drag tries including rolling race or other forms of comparing the cars performance.
In South Africa, 4wd is not even that important because it never snows in 99% of the country. So if the 4wd is not good in drag racing, there is no point for it to be sold in SA. Its good for European countries where roads get very slippy when there is snow.
I was anticipating the Subaru to take this one. Next time bring back the old school 2.5 Subaru with the 'box motor' to take the Hyundai back to school. ;)
The Subaru needed to be launched properly to keep the revs up. Plus take advantage of the awd traction with a stronger launch. But Hyundai goes good.. it’s just a shame it’s front wheel drive, has poor resale value and the lil engine runs huge boost to keep up with wrx.. wrx is a bigger displacement low boost engine, better for reliability, consistency and tuning potential
Thanks for the race guys🤗✊👍🏿. Personally I have no history with Subaru never even liked any of their cars. Somehow I feel this is the “matured acquired” persons taste I mean it does look good for sedan. I would have the Subaru over i30N. They also come fully loaded. If you a boy racer and wanna ring cars everyday i30N but if you family dude and want a nice quick car for family trips everyday that Subaru is definitely worth considering. Gone are days of poor made cars if they properly driven and well maintained they last. Consider rolling races and brake tests let’s c the full story👏🏻🙂🌚✊
So lets talk about the elephant in the room, jsut a heads up I am a new i30n DCT owner. What everyone neglects to tell you is that the i30N does not come with South African maps. Thus the entire GPS and map system is useless. It defaults to the UK, all the countries have full GPS and maps its only South Africa that doesnt get it. Hyundai Head office says you must use android auto or apple car play.
RIP WRX. It's done. Subaru killed the STi, and the WRX will be on the chopping block next as the competition with FWD is killing it. Despite having a 2.4L engine, Subaru made a huge mistake in the tuning and power output. Not to mention, in my opinion, the WRX looks awful. The WRX has barely anything going for it other than a good AWD system, which is not enough to sway the market in my opinion. Subaru moving away from it's rally heritage is pretty sad. Also, if they can't hybridize or electrify soon with decent MPG numbers they won't last long either despite good sales of their crossover cars.
Probably about 15kgs in weight between the drivers plus the heavy CVT. Close in real world terms. You could even make the case that in the real world at the lights the WRX would be quicker, before they both come to a stop at the next jam :)
AWESOME DRAG ! BUT the WRX is OBVIOUSLY NOT a drag car 😉😜 Now do a race on a nice combo tarmac & gravel teack & the difference WILL be ASTONISHING ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Who could have thought Hyundai could drag race a Subaru.... We're living in the future hey.
Interesting times, a few years ago I wouldn't make sense to bring any hyundai to a drag race and here we are.
I blame it on that lousy CVT they shoved into the Subaru.
we're living in hell, or a doomed timeline. Subaru is a Factory of Sadness.

Subaru have been dropping the ball lately.. That I30N is no joke
Pity they put a CVT box in the Subaru. Could literally see the i30N gaining on the shifts.
This is the real race breaker here is the transmission. If they would have used a manual wrx then that changes everything.
@Wilhelm Ritter Yep. A proper dct in the wrx and it wins. Even the 6mt wrx would win as it is faster than the cvt.
The fact that they even used a automatic transmission wrx is obsurd because the wrx has been a manual only car till just a few years ago. That is in no way a true representation of what the wrx is. @@OnlyTheKushestNope, manual I30N smashes the manual WRX.
CVT gearboxes aren't meant for performance, they only shine when it comes to fuel efficiency.

The manual version definitely would have been in for the win though
@Alex brake boosting a CVT? Might trigger a transmission overheat light (or actually do overheat the cvt) and put itself in limp mode

That's an impressive amount of torque from that 2.0L/4. My 3.0L/6 is only making 450nm! 😅 Time to get mine tuned.
They lost me at a CVT box for the impreza
My thoughts exactly. They are abandoning their tradition

Why was the i30N not suitable for daily driving? I wouldn't call it impractical🤷♂️... is it the ride quality and fuel economy?
I would like to know too

Yes, and the WRX design is way better looking too. At least.
The Subaru is really pricy for what it is as this point , the Hyundai i30N is definitely the better option in terms of price , looks and performance…
i30N has dethroned the mighty GTI.
Nah, the GTI is unmatched with their mixture of premium feel and performance.

What’s the dry weight of the I30N DCT with sun roof?
The only reason we need an STI.
I’d have the Hyundai.
The Subaru WRX isn’t sold here in Europe.
Whtat mode is the wrx? Sport or sport sharp? Or normal?

For straight road awd doesn't do much, you thank it when it's at 200kmh, up hill corners
Hard to take in because of what we've always thought about the WRX, and about Hyundai.
