What a beautiful man, what a beautiful soul.! He created pure magic 🎩, you listen to with your ears and FEEL with your SOUL. He did what he came to earth to do and we're all so thankful he did.!
I remember that whole day - hearing he had cardiac arrest, wasn't breathing and was in the hospital on life support, then being taken off of life support, then dying, then not being dead and then finding out the next morning that he had indeed passed the previous evening. A terrible, terrible day. First the Vegas massacre, then Ton Petty dying. Just the worst. Just...horrible. I really loved that guy.
That day was probably the worst day I’ve had. Well other than family deaths of course. But this guy’s still a favorite and I am glad we still got his music. Wasn’t his only gift though.
That's the beauty of art and music and he knew it too. That's why he worked so hard to leave all these beautiful things behind. His music has done so much for me and I didn't even find most of it until after the fact. ❤
When you see a Tom Petty live performance - even only on TH-cam - you'll immediately notice that this fine man was born to be on stage. Great song and performance, no idea why he's mainly famous for his 90's top hits (at least in Europe), there are many pearls amongst his recordings from the late seventies to his current record, and you couldn't write a better opener to his 1991 album.
Its so sad he passed away because I had the impression he still enjoys touring and looked really relaxed on stage. Yeah, his fret hand shaking due to the 80's injury made me always feel sorry in the newer live videos, but that was part of his history and he still went up there even though it probably ain't funny when you have to play two hour shows in pain... His death really shocked me, Tom Petty wasn't on my list of those in danger, I think the last record even was the best he made in years, though, admittedly he really kept a high standard over his whole career, I can listen to all his records. 80-90's are a bit pop-ish and soft in arrangement, but I think he is a great rock musician and a powerful team together with The Heartbreakers. Too bad this now all came to and end, I would have wished there was a chance to see him live if he'd ever played in Central Europe... and the Stones still touring their a** off....that's not fair.
Exactly right Cam. If you look at his tours to the earlier UK tour, there are some close up shots and his chord hand is trembling so much it looks as though he has first stage Parkinson's disease it is so noticeable. He also had the shakes on the recent 40th Anniversary UK concert (also on YT).
I saw him about 16 years ago in FL and first thing he said was, "I can't believe you all still come out to see us" lol. He was very humble and appreciative of his fans.
One thing in life - don't ever put off doing what you want until later as it may never happen. Live life to the full, laugh, live & dance as you never know what happens tomorrow. Thanks for some amazing live performances & music Tom. Truly one in a million. Still gutted.
This song/video just hits me right in the goose. The Heartbreakers are firing on all cylinders, Stan’s on the drums, everyone’s alive (Howie, Tom), the song is just a perfect lift, Tom’s looking all cool and hippie, Mike’s wailing away on that Rickenbacker. Everything is right in the world when this video plays. Lucky crowd to be there. Kinda bittersweet, knowing this band will never chime and soar like this again, but we had them - and their ringleader - for a good long time, and those songs ain’t going anywhere. 🥲
I've always had a weakness for blue-eyed rebel blondes! My hubby could have past for Tom's brother back in the 70's! Together now for 43 years, He still has my heart but has to share it with Tom Petty!!! LOL!! This past spring I was given the spare room (kids finally gone) I now have my own Tom Petty bedroom!! Yeah, he understands me, LMBO!!! Keep rockin' to TP&THB!!! Forever a fan!!!
I certainly did during the first week of October... and got choked up and tearful throughout the month. We lost one of our favorite people on the planet, a wonderful talent, a funny, smart man and one of the best songwriters of the rock era. For me, it was like losing a good friend who felt like an older brother to me. I'm glad I saw him nine times between 1979 and 2010.
I still cry. After seeing three of The Heartbreakers perform "I Won't Back Down" I couldn't help it. This is a beautiful example of their excellence in Rock.
Oh i await the day to see tom petty live and did in St. Augustine. I may only be 25 now but no true rock artist will ever be as good as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. R.I.P Tom Petty..
No.....Sadly Howie died at least a decade before Tom. Someone wrote that he died the day after his beautiful GSD (German Shepherd Dog) died. Howie got Tom into heroine but Tom got off it because he knew when he met Dana, that she wouldn't tolerate his doing hard drugs. Unfortunately, Howie did overdose....accidentally I believe. How ironic and sad that Tom did too....but Tom was in excruciating pain, especially from his fractured hip. RIP Tom and Howie. :( 😞 😓
One of his "forgotten" songs I'd say, most people think of "Learning to Fly" or the title track from the album but this one and "Out In The Cold" are very worthy songs. His passing really saddens me. I can only imagine how Mike-Ron-Benmont-Steve feel right about now.
@@brent5566 But it isn't known by the masses, like Learning to Fly and Into the Great Wide Open is. I think "Out of the Cold" flopped as the third single, so the album lost momentum. This should have been the 3rd single instead.
My parents took me to this tour 3 times. He's still my absolute favorite. If anyone else was there, just remembering the Psychedelic Dragon, the theatrics around "don't come around here no more", and Mike's solo section of the show. Absolutely the greatest concerts I've ever been to, and I've been to alot.
I've been to concerts by the some of the biggest, for lack of a better term. Tom and the Heartcrushers were right at the top of it ... best live band I ever saw bar none.
I listened to this album until I wore out my cassette player! Tom you will forever be missed, but just know that your music still heals and soothes the soul. You are the best!
back when music could be called music, love Tom:-) Love his voice will never get bored, Lyrically his music is an inspiration, will be listening to this until the day I die;-)
This song lifts me up every time I hear it. It means a lot to me. Hoping someone is gonna pick me up and takes me away from my hubby who has dementia and tortures me.
was lucky enough to see him twice back in the early 90's. Houston and Dallas. One of the best, Tom Petty Rocks!! can wait to see you rockin in heaven buddy.
This is the era of Tom Petty and the HBs just on fire - I so wish I could have seen this concert. This is when they played Learning To Fly the album way, with Mike Campbell's beautiful leads. Kings Highway is just a gorgeous song - the entire album is a masterpiece.
Tom should have cancelled his tour, and have the surgery he needed. But he didn't want to disappooint the ppl who counted on big money for that tour, and of course his fans!!! Basically he was selfless, and a true gifted artist we are so lucky to have had him!! R I P Tom,and Thank You!

It's amazing how Howie contributes with the chorus on this song. He's a little underrated today, but he was definitely an important part of the classic line up of The Heartbreakers. He also played the bass lines beautifully even though Ron also knew what he was doing. Fantastic musicians all together.
Saw him for the first time when I was 10 years old. Been to hundreds of concerts since then, but it's still the most memorable show I've ever been to! I love you, Tom!!!

Beautifully said! I agree ♥

The greatness of Petty's songwriting was that it was so welcoming you could hear a song for the first time and it would already feel familiar.
Tom Petty died less than an hour ago. Rest in peace, Tom, and may you forever ride down the King's Highway.
