The issue about expanding mental health services is that most therapists are not compensated accordingly nor held at the same level as doctors. My wife has gone through 8 years of school and 2 years of supervision to get her license as a Marriage and Family therapist just to get paid half what a doctor would make. Add all the insurance bullshit therapist have to deal with: how many hours of therapy are covered, the type of therapy, etc. This creates a shortage of qualified therapist and limits the access to mental health services. We are so used to treat mental health issues as medical conditions when in reality they are a combination of systemic problems and actual mental health problems, we can’t expect to improve mental health with drugs alone, it takes a village to help someone improve or control severe mental health disorders. I hope the systemic approach becomes as relevant as psychotherapy and psychiatry, that might be our only way to truly offer help to people in need.

@@francisdec1615 So you believe that it has nothing to do with the amount of firearms in US but it has to do with what? If you say mental issues, then how do you explain that UK have roughly 70 times less violent gun deaths? Do you think UK have dramatically less mental issues than US?
You have no moral issues with the price of lives each year in US because you are afraid of the government?

    • @francisdec1615

@@hanshansen3885 Of course it has *something* to do with the firearms. It couldn't happen without firearms. But it didn't happen a lot in European countries when they had little or no gun control. It actually used to happen less in the US too, when it was literally free to buy guns everywhere in the whole country. Thus it is mainly a mentality question.
Stalin and Mao murdered tens of millions of people after taking their guns from them. The Nazis in Germany took the Jews' guns in 1935 and began mass murdering them in 1941. The state should simply not be allowed to have the power to murder millions of people without them being able to put up any resistance whatsoever.

"Canada, for its part, may have a lot of guns as well, as the chart below shows, but its citizens don't often die from gunfire; the country ranks 72nd in the world for deaths from firearms. Despite having one firearm per every three Canadians, the country's death rate from gun violence is about one-tenth that of the US (though still four times that of the UK). While mass shootings have been on the rise in Canada, only 223 Canadians died from firearm violence in 2016, compared with more than 14,000 in the US. Prospective gun buyers in Canada must pass a reference check, background check, and a gun-safety course before receiving a firearm license; the country also imposes a 28-day waiting period for new gun licensees. The AR-15 rifle-which was used to kill high school students in Parkland, Florida, moviegoers in Aurora, Colorado, and worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue, among many others-is a "restricted" firearm in Canada, meaning owners must pass an additional test and obtain a special license."

Mental health seems to be a big factor in shootings. Availability of weapons is another. However, people who have severe mental health issues will find something to carry out their deeds if guns are not available. Relatives of individuals that have these terrible disabilities bear a responsibility to over see their handicapped relatives OR report (not anonymously) it to the Authorities.

    • @lovemesomeslippers

Where I live there is no one to report to. Try calling the police and saying you think they might commit a crime. The department might send someone out to talk to them. Slight chance. But they can’t do anything until a crime is committed. You can’t commit or arrest a person unless they try to harm you or themselves. Just being unsound is not a crime. Families hands are tied. And most importantly, being related doesn’t mean you know anyone’s innermost thoughts and feelings if they don’t want you to.

We should definitely do that, frankly I think the best route would be banning AR-15-style rifles as well as high-capacity magazines in general (no one needs 30 rounds for deer hunting or self defense). But we've got to keep in mind that over half of all US gun deaths are suicides, and those are generally done with a handgun. Our country's suicide rate is increasing rapidly, and that's just as important as addressing mass shootings. We can absolutely focus on both issues at the same time if we commit to it.

Suicide rates are indeed a growing crises in this country like drug abuse. But these deadly mass shootings are a separate problem. Suicide can happen without a firearm, but massacres of innocent citizens can only be accomplished with a weapon of mass destruction, a terrorists weapon, a bomb or an assault rifle. The outrageous proliferation of these military weapons which are created to destroy human civilization cannot continue to be justified. We are heading toward self annihilation as a society.

Mental health care is a necessary part of anyone's overall health. I think it's one of the most important aspects related to our overall health. Being a mental health care provider myself, I'm a bit biased, but I think most people can agree that much of their own mental health impacts their lives and their overall wellbeing. With that said, living in this world is quite traumatic and has become more so now than it has been in decades. We are just coming out of a world wide pandemic that completely changed our lives, and I'd argue the risk of becoming sick is still a major concern for a lot of people. We see violence and death almost daily at this point. We live with the risk of being in a mass shooting. A risk that becomes more likely every week. We live in a country where women's lives are valued less than a clump of cells, and where guns have more rights than we as human beings do. Our environment is dying, and it feels like we are coming closer to the destruction of our planet as the years pass. I could go on, but these factors should be enough to prove my point. That point is that mental health care can only do so much. It can't stop this constant trauma we are living through. Mental health care practitioners are taking the brunt of all this trauma while many of us are suffering ourselves. I love that we are discussing mental health on macro level, and I think it is doing good things to lessen the stigma and advocate for better services. However, none of that will stop the ongoing trauma we as a country experience everyday. Trauma which is at the center of most mental health issues. While we are discussing mental health care we also need to fight the root causes of the trauma that is making us sick. We need to take active steps to ensure we don't have to constantly cope with the horrific things we are regularly hit with everyday. We can't heal when our trauma is still occurring. It's just not realistic.

Top 13 states with gun deaths from 1 to 13 . Mississippi, Louisiana, Wyoming, Missouri, Alabama, Alaska New Mexico, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Montana, Oklahoma and Kentucky. All red except New Mexico. Where's California and New York they are California at 44 and New York 46. This was for 2022. Arkansas is seeing a rise. Most of those top states also are among the worst for education including high school graduation and college degrees. 7 of those 13 have the worst Healthcare. 12 of the 13 have the worst poverty rate. But instead lawmakers in these states are focused on drag queens and book banning. Also all of those states have high infant mortality rates because of lack of Healthcare for moms. So very pro life. Katie porter needs to whiteboard this for the gqp.

Care to drill down a little further than the state level? Look at the problem in a little bit finer resolution. Maybe county, city, neighborhoods and you see something a bit different than you’re suggesting.

It's a start. Good points, still not enough to end gun violence. What is so difficult about a ban on assault rifles? We need politicians with strong backbones to say enough is enough. This isn't a 2nd amendment issue.

Now, after 4 years as governor, he gets really concerned about deadly mental health National disasters. It is common sense and the absolute responsibility for any governor to fully address all national disasters immediately. Don't mess with the 2nd amendment. Restrictions for 99.5% of responsible gun owners make the 0.5% of criminals very happy. Are criminals going to surrender their AR-15's, etc...certainly NOT.
