Technically we did not lose in Afghanistan or Iraq. Both objectives were achieved and those invasions were incredibly successful, the problem was the mission became ambiguous and changed afterwards in occupation. By the time we left Afghanistan I don't think there was an objective we were just kind of there. The problem is we thought we could turn those countries into democracies after doing what we had to. Which is fine for places like Japan, Germany, and South Korea. But Islamic societies clearly don't want that so we shouldn't have even bothered.

Two reasons you are seeing high civilian deaths. #1 hamas uses them as shields and want civilians to die as it helps thier messaging. They also don't wear uniforms so they are hard to pick out against a civilians. And #2 it's the most density per mile of people.

The US would not drop 500 lb bombs in Mosul, Israel has regularly dropped 2000lb bombs on apartment buildings and refugee camps. An IDF spokesperson admitted to Wolf Blitzer that they bombed a refugee camp, likely killing around 200 civilians in order to get one Hamas commander. It's an insult to the US military to compare the IDF's blatant disregard for collateral damage, to US military operations. Even the most ardent Israel supporter should agree that Israel has shown a disregard for civilians and their own hostages at points. Hamas directly targeted and killed civilians, but Israel has also blown up over half the buildings in Gaza. I think a large portion on the planet feel that the "human shields" argument cannot be an excuse to turn the majority of a territory to rubble.

I don't think its that necessarily. Its unfortunate, but soldiers have traditionally been defined as men ( a little older than adolescents) for millennia. Its harder and murkier and difficult to distinguish between a male who is "fighting age" that is a civilian vs a soldier. However, women, children and elderly are usually more clearly and easily distinguished as not being the soldiers. Hence the difference. So, not so much people don't care, its that when talking about civilians its easier to make clear who you're talking about if you talk about people who CLEARLY can't be fighting soldiers (ie innocent).

What you're getting from Israel is a ratio of women, children and elderly, and then men and teens "of fighting age", not confirmed combatants. Even with that assumption, it still doesn't bode well for Israel when they're happy to be killing so many civilians - a ratio that's actually worse than the ratio on October 7 of actual Israeli combatants and civilians as per Israel's own numbers.

I don't believe the US would appreciate it if Israeli decided to tell us how to conduct our own combat operations, and that relationship holds true in reverse. Does President Biden support Israeli or not? Is US support unconditional or not? Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan was disastrous, passively arming the Taliban with abandoned weapons and munitions stores as well as the repetitional loss and doubts raised by strategic partners regarding US commitments- so I'm not convinced of Senator Kelly's claims about how the US would conduct operations against Hamas. Sen. Kelly never discusses specific metrics about what would constitute improvement in the IDF's ability to limit civilian casualties, and despite his acknowledgement that Hamas is the most substantial threat to lasting peace in the region, the UN just voted to expand Palestine's observer state status.
His suggestion that Hamas would abide by any binding treaty is absolute folly. Why doesn't he just put on a top hat like Lord Chamberlain and proclaim, "peace in our time"?

    Dear World,
I understand your frustration with us here in Israel. It's evident that our actions have often stirred anger and controversy. From the conflicts with our neighbors to the ongoing struggles for peace, we recognize the toll it takes on our relationship with the global community.
But please, allow me to offer some context. Our journey as a people has been marked by adversity and resilience. From the horrors of the Holocaust to centuries of persecution and exile, we've endured unimaginable hardships.
When we returned to our ancestral homeland, it was not to provoke or upset, but to find safety and security. Yet, our presence has sparked tensions and conflicts that have tested the patience of the world.
Despite the challenges we face, we remain committed to coexistence and peace. We strive to defend our land while seeking paths to reconciliation with our neighbors.
So, when you criticize our actions or policies, remember the history that has shaped our choices. Remember the sacrifices made by generations past to ensure our survival and the importance of our homeland to our identity and existence.
We don't seek to upset you. We seek understanding, empathy, and a shared vision for a peaceful future.
    Sincerely,

«The police have *conducted themselves appropriately.»* What does that mean? Using pepper spray, beating people with batons, tasing people, kneeling on people in prone positions and pressing their heads against the ground, attacking teachers protecting students, violently shoving and grabbing people in locked arms and dragging them on the ground, firing gaseous weapons at the crowd, etc.

Ther eis no evidence that babies are being killed. Between 7,000 and 14,000 minors (many of whom are under-18 Hamas soliders).

I seriously disagree with Senator Kelly about the conduct of Israel in this war. Every comparison I've seen with how urban warfare is conducted places Israel's tactics and strategy at the apex of successful intervention, defined as the most enemy killed with the least civilian casualties. Please google the statics yourself if you don't believe me.
Look into the US incursion into Mosel with its civilian to combatant casualties.
Check on Iraq and Afghanistan. Do you know why the Russians memorialize Stalingrad and Leningrad? And in WWII there was Warsaw, not just the first invasion but then the Russian reconquest. (Russia had it's own reasons not to minimize civilian casualties). Reconquest of Manilla had a very high casualty rate and it was one of the reasons the US decided to use an atomic bomb to end the Pacific war.
Also, Senator Kelly mentions offhandedly that Israel isn't using the proper ordnance and should be using more guided bombs.
But that's exactly what Biden has refused to supply!
I'm a life-long democrat but I'm seriously disappointed at President Biden's decision to withhold the weapons Israel needs to succeed in this war. If Israel doesn't succeed, if Hamas is allowed to remain in power at any level, we will see replay after replay of this scenario. It has been promised.
Everything else Senator Kelly says I completely agree with!!! Women's rights, Voting rights, you name it, immigration crisis, Republicans just complain. Democrats fix it.

The real problem is israeli occupation. If any party other than Hamas were in power in Gaza right now, it might have tried to lobby for international support for the Palestinians of East Jerusalem a few days or weeks longer before launching rockets on Israel. But seeing its fellow countrymen and women made homeless, time and time again, would ultimately have forced the hand of even a non-Hamas government in Gaza, either drawing it into the fight or making it so unpopular for not getting involved that it’d be forced out of power.

@@canitbethat you are obviously not a military expert. There certainly are ways to fight a war in which intelligence and targeting militants is priority. That is clearly not the case here.

@@christinaakbari6241 Not a military expert myself, but have read what some of them have written about this. Read, for example, the analysis of John Spencer, chair of urban warfare studies at West Point's Modern Warfare Institute, on the measures the IDF has been taking to protect civilians. He clearly thinks they're ahead of the U.S. on this. Look also at the civilian to combatant ratio from the most similar battle the U.S. has led, vs. ISIS in Mosul. The IDF has done better than the U.S. did there. It's easy to say that it could be done better, but where's the actual evidence of another military doing better in a similar situation?
