    Last summer I started tweaking my arrows after I saw you with the THP crew. Been addicted ever since. I was able to increase my weight and FOC on my current arrows and still shoot ok. This off-season, I'm dedicated to my arrows and broadheads. Everyone I know that bowhunts, I forward your videos.

    Honestly, after shooting the tine off my buck, hitting the main beam, passing through the rib at the spine , and coming out between his front legs, at the base of my tree this year it might as well been a javelin !
    611 grain of fairy magic.

    Loved the video. First RF video I've ever seen woth ads. Not complaining, I'm glad youre finally getting your due.. I know you've always said you turn off the monetization on your videos to stay unbiased, I personally trust your science regardless of whether you get paid. Just a heads up, if you aren't getting a check from YT they made 4 ads worth of money on you while I watched this one.

    Just started shooting my first 450+ grain arrows this fall and saw massive gains in penetration on my target. Initial testing was at 550 grain. now I am shooting 800 grains and my shots are passing through my target at 20 yards. Can't wait to see it on a deer! Ranch Fairy, expect to see a picture of my 23% FOC bloody arrow by the end of the season!

    Great Video. Where I am in South Africa we are typically mid-altitude (+- 1100 m above sea level) and dry semi arid conditions (Predominantly dry) in the summer time we have a major shift of air Pressure from high to low and back to high sometimes over a matter of hours that coupled with a Humidity level that can go from 30% to 100%(precipitation) and back to 30% in the same time frame. When shooting 3 D comps here you would be amazed at how the point of impact is affected especially at distance(Pressure on the arrow) - it is a consideration that we have to take in especially in the summer time - I have not checked it yet but I believe there will also be a significant drop off on speed too - some great content there.

  • @JW-uj3we

    I have watched nearly all the vids on FOC and arrow mass multiple times and continues to find interesting points. When you show the "levering" of the flat flight arrow traveling two vectors simultaneously it brought to mind nearly every slow-motion video of animal movement at impact. It is very rare, even in quartering shots with the head turned away, that the deer, pig, elk, do not turn or drop just at the moment of impact thereby increasing the levering issue. I continue to see the sense in the so called high FOC, impact to prevent levering, increased penetration rationales. Yes, perfect shots get perfect results in perfect situations, but how many guys publish the bad shots? Personally, have never had a perfect setup. I sure do see results in target penetration with a 21% 660g arrow at 220 fps though. Started to wear Atlas gloves and put my shoulder into a foam broadhead target to just get out field points. Only got one shot off this year in the Idaho Mtns. Hit a limb in really windy conditions, just didn't see it during the moment. Took 20 minutes to extract a Cutthroat 200g single bevel out of a log. The Sirius 250 spine and alum/ss outcert were undamaged as was the broadhead. Big sigh, I can't wait for next year and to see what comes out of this adventure.

    A good point I didn't think or know about. I'm sure it has more effect the further the shot and/or the slower the arrow flies. More time the arrow spends in the air before hitting the animal the more time gravity has to accelerate that downward force on the shaft.
    Here's an interesting thought: if the animal does react in the usual way of dropping to the ground, there could be an argument that those two downward forces of the arrow shaft and the target would cancel each other out and improve penetration despite a flat arrow direction!

    Quite ironic this was posted.. was shooting my 670grain 23-30% FOC, w/200 grain samurais at 55lbs 27" draw/27"arrows the other day. I looked at one of my plan b's and decided to throw it. it launched and landed just like a javelin or dart. I also thought wow i could probably seriously hurt someone just by throwing this. Would of never happened with my 380 grain straws, especially with a collapsible. Once again, just the confidence i now have in shooting and tuning i owe thanks to the fairy. Also still requesting the "buy a good target if you're gonna shoot real metal out of a bow" disclaimer for each video ;).. thanks again.. Oh and the sharpening is coming along great, i can now shave.. KME system is highly recommended for beginners. Pricey but we should spare nothing when achieving perfect arrow flight and penetration..

    Hey RF, Decided to make a switch in arrows after many years of no passthru shots on many deer from 160# up to 280# using light arrows and 100 grain flappers. I am pre-carbon like yourself and started using 2215 aluminum arrows and 145g bear broadheads and ALWAYS got passthru's. My current set up is 58# draw at 26.5 inches so I'm never going to shoot heavy arrows at 300fps. I am shooting adolescent arrows now which weigh in at 450 grains BUT they are the old style pultruded carbon arrows by Beeman - 60/80 hunters with steel outserts with an outside shaft diameter of only .244 coupled with sharpened and honed 150 grain grizzly single bevel heads. My FOC is right at 20%. Everyone at camp laughed until I shot thru a 18" black hole block! I also tuned these suckers to fly perfect out of my bow and they hit exactly with my field points. First deer I shot was at 27 yards slight quartering to me and the arrow zipped thru the deer breaking ribs on both sides and burying in the dirt about 12 inches. The deer just jumped about 10 feet then hunched up and dropped after wobbling another 20 feet! It was the first animal in many years that I got a fast passthru and dropped in sight. Maybe after I use these arrows up I will graduate to an adult size arrow but I still have 9 left since 1988!

    • @TheJustinJ

      Yes and no. Dr. Ashby demonstrated that it's far far better to have the weight forward of center by a minimum of 18% and ideally 30% but >25% works nearly as well.
      The rear of the shaft does push, but it causes the spine to flex, which arcs the arrow shaft and causes it to lose a lot of penetration due to arrow shaft drag in the flesh.
      Making an Arrow with extremely high FoC such as 30% is relatively easy.
      Look up Victory Arrows XT series it's only 7.2 grains per inch for 300? Spine shaft. Use a lightweight (small) feather fletching because it's lighter. Use a heavy broadhead like the 315gr GrizzlyStik one, or 250gr from Iron. Or use a glue-on grizzly 185gr glued to a 125gr steel glue-on threaded adaptor. Victory makes a stainless outsert that is 75gr plus you can get additional +50gr weight to add to the back of the insert/outset from them.
      This method gets you >31% F.o.C. on a really thin and light but stiff shaft and weighs 650-700 grains. Out of a fairly weak #40 longbow, it will go through a cape buffalo side ribs and double lung it and imbed the tip in the far opposite ribcage. It's nuts. All documented in PDF on ashbybowhunting website.

    Interesting discussion, but I'm not a high FOC guy anymore. It's LASERs or lawn darts at the extremes. I don't like throwing logs and prefer a flattery trajectory and speed for penetration. I always go for the passthrough and it's never been a problem regardless of FOC, even blowing through hog armor. Still an interesting discussion.

    It's literally the same thing. The increased the Javeline's FOC to increase its penetration into the dirt, so that it wouldn't paradox itself right out of the dirt and fly into the runners. It's literally the same problem: not enough penetration.

    Like throwing a dart into a board compared to a ping pong ball. The ping pong ball front loaded with a needle probably wouldn't penetrate cork.
    I'm in a state that opens the shotgun season WAY too early. It closed on Sunday with very few shots. Falling temps & vicious winds. But the day b4 was the best weather in 6 weeks, but only after 2:00PM when it got noticeably darker. Hunting with a bow in shotgun season is something I've been doing my whole life. But over the last couple of years I adapted. There is 30 deer per square mile & land is now fragmented more than it ever has been. Deer can have defined patterns but they r not surveyors & disobey property lines. I have a great pinchpoint but on the wrong day the deer would have to travel 1/3 of a mile to get to this spot. Saturday afternoon was 1 of these days. The 3rd of 4 deer all anterless was my target. Deer Camera footage revealed this old matriarch was alone & being pursued by bucks on the 11th & into the 12th. I needed to remove her since she was causing property damage to 2 landowners property & I will never have any rut activity on the remaining younger doe with her around. I did not hunt this spot 1 day in October. I got video of the group bedded @ 1:00pm from the road where I do my scouting. I was ready b4 3:00 & they showed up @ 15 minutes b4 sundown but it felt later than that. Took her last step @ 12 yards quartering toward me so I put the Valkyrie 210 short Jag into the top/front of her right shoulder like a shotgun slug. On video u can see the arrow buried in the ground b4 she reacts. I was able to spin her around which is what I needed her to do. She went 10 yards & then stumbled 20 feet to her right & collapsed on a blowdown. Thoracic cavity explosion! My 3rd doe in 30 years that dressed out over 160. I was able to get video of the 3 other deer for 15 minutes. During that cold & windy Sunday I took video of those deer just after they rose from their beds.
    FYI , bloodtrail the 1st 10 yards was 3 feet wide...the last 20 feet was 6 feet wide. Perfect nock tuning & flight was more important than my poundage which is only 62 lbs. The EZV is quiet & very accurate from a 🌳. Especially when u shoot it pro & hum-vee style with no peep & a nose button.🤩

    2 thoughts here….
    #1 we all would love to see some high speed camera footage of the Firenock diagram vs your thoughts with the back end of the arrow moving resulting in less penetration. If the arrow is in equilibrium it probably matters significantly less?
    #2 momentum is a vector force… it has direction… ALWAYS. Which would be effected by gravity, pressure, etc the same due to those being constants (constants as being applied at the same above sea level elevation). The vector force/direction doesn’t dissolve unless an equal and opposite force opposes it.
    Don’t know if any arrow setup having 0 FOC as being talked about here. With that said with a flight trajectory with a downward angle at impact would be helped by gravity in theory, like mentioned unless there was a big velocity difference between the two examples. P=M*V (without loss coefficients and variables)
    Long story short…. This probably only illustrates a small portion of what is actually happening.

      @RanchFairy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct
      It’s an algorithm to have an arrow penetrate!
      Dull broadhead -
      Broadhead breaks
      Arrow flying sideways
      Arrow experiences aerodynamic jump and takes off - off line.
      CG and CP too close together - less stable.
      And a PILE OF OTHER things
      This is an example of one thing - YUP.
      That ONE THING - It’s better for the tail to follow the point on the trajectory line than if it’s
      Below the point
      Sideways
      Or tilted too far forward “ahead of the point”
      With one Focus. IMPACT and penetration.
      You got it!!!
      By the way - the javelin thing is a fact they moved the FOC forward in the rules. It’s a flying stick!!
      I have no idea why you added momentum comments. Those are facts too. The average person doesn’t understand that - but you do!! You listed a bunch of other factors - Sweet!
      Algorithm.

    RF thanks to you ive gotten into some tinkering. Now i have my grizzlystik 320's shooting fine at 670 grains and 27" but i wanted to test the 240's for the hell of it. I havent fully nock tuned 1 yet but while i was trying a few shots i noticed any tears were left tears normally indicating a weak spine which is what i had the whole time ive was tuning the 320's. The 240's are currently 29" and weigh about 640 grains. Why am i still seeing left tears with a stiffer arrow? Im Hoping through nock tuning this will resolve and i can shoot the 240's. Could the arrow length be the issue? i left them long intentionally to keep them a little weaker.

      Normal physics do not apply to high FOC arrows. Cmon man you should know that by now. If you arent shooting 650 grains at 200fps you cant kill anything.

    • @ExodusF1nale
      @ExodusF1nale 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think he was saying it would fly tail low, it would fly flat. Due to gravity though, you're entire arrow is going to dropping towards the ground, while it is flying flat through the air.
      This means the overall force the the arrow is exerting at impact isn't just forward, it also has downward force. Which since the shaft of your arrow isn't made for cutting, it makes for wasted energy.
      I think a good way to demonstrate that would just be to take a needle and stick it through a tightly pulled piece of paper. Now, push the needle forward while also dragging it down through the paper. You will notice it's a lot easier to stick the tip through but then you just end up using a lot more force to tear the paper vertically.
      Now do the same thing but this time push the needle in at a 45 degree angle towards the ground. The the point of the needle is in line with the body and you end up with a cleaner hole and no wasted tearing energy (not that you could tear through a deer with the side of an arrow shaft)

    Shooting from my tree stand...my arrow is already at a 45º angle...roughly. All I know is the Ranch Fairy Process/ Formula for arrow builds works. My arrow system is defiantly more lethal than previous years. This year Doe#1 was 20 yards quartering away. My arrow busted two ribs going in., cut the diaphragm and penetrated both lungs, broke 2 more ribs on the other side, deflected and cut the does throat on the way out. Complete Pass Thru. She jogged/walked off and fell over less than 60 yards. . Doe#2 Lung and heart shot. ..nothing spectacular...complete pass through...she just went 30 yards and fell over. Tracking sucks . Watching them fall is "More Gooder"! Pulling 63# - 29" Arrows total weight 570gr - Black Eagle Rampage (300 Spine- 7.5gpi) -125 Ethics Insert w/ 125 Magnus BL Hornet Ser Razor - 21% FOC.

    So I’m running adult arrows this year and I must admit my experience has been unexpected, I first shot my best buck in Ohio. Double lung but entry was a touch high exit was good with 580 grain arrows and a magnus black hornet serrazor (250 grains up front) He flinched ran about 60 yards realized he was hurt and took off, very very little blood ( probably due to the slightly high entry) found him he went a total of 150 yards or so. Second buck 23 yards he lunged after a doe hit him back of one lung and stomach (quartering away) he kinda flinched and walked off blood everywhere and went prob 250 yards probably due to the doe he was pushing but had no idea he was hit at all. My buddy shooting 480 grains and a magnus buzzcut (200 grains up front) shot his first deer ever with a bow quartering away, double lung went less than 50 but again didn’t know he was hit, kinda flinched and walked off but no blood. The weird part is not really getting a blood trail so thank goodness I have decent tracking skills and before anyone asks I could actually shave my arms with the heads. My question is could the lack of blood actually been from the serrated blades? Just weird to me.

      I've heard cut on contact broadheads don't make them bleed right away. I have wasp sharpshooters on mine and had the same issue until about 100 yards I had specs of blood. After that he started bleeding quite a bit more. Same as you he didn't know he was hit and just walked off. I would compare it to cutting yourself with a really sharp knife, don't feel it, and can see inside the cut with no blood for a second or 2, but trying to get it to stop bleeding once it starts takes forever.

      I shot a 240 lb whitetail with a cutthroat 250 grain single bevel. Center of body dead center of both lungs. He walked off and stared in my direction for about 10 seconds before he took off and ran for 200 yards. Blood trail was impossible to follow. Head was shaving sharp. He never knew he was hit & never smelled me. I was a little disappointed that he made it that far. If he had not paused for 10 seconds he would have been much farther. Hole in lungs was smaller that the cutting diameter of the head on entrance side & exactly matched cutting diameter on exit. Debating doing back to more blades for better blood trails.

      @Frank Andrew I’ve shot deer middle of body my whole life and had no problems with blood even with other fixed heads, these cut on contacts are just different is my point, btw shot a doe through lungs and top of heart blood got a little better but still not very good. I will continue to to use these as I feel they are better and offer a level of assurance other heads don’t and I love that deer do not know they are hit I think that is worth more than most heads offer

    ...if the physics would work like this: why don't we shoot bullets with such a trajectory to increase penetration?
    ...I guess the misconception here comes from the different tasks for the javelin and the hunting arrow: the javelin is thrown for flying as fare as possible, and if you want such an object fly as far as possible, you have to optimize the trajectory respectively you have to launch it with an starting angel that facilitates such a trajectory. Similar can be said for medieval war bows: they had to "fire" their bows with such an extreme angle to get such a trajectory as otherwise their arrows would have just hit the ground after a few meters.
    It needs to be understood that the vertical component of the velocity is only driven by gravity, not by the bow, poundage etc., and it is increasing the longer the gravity can work (which is the case as long as the arrow is in the air). Thus an arrow that starts tilting more to the ground is not an indication that the vertical speed component is increased compared to a level flying arrow, but that the horizontal speed component is reduced! Therefore the overall velocity is reduced - which is not beneficial for penetration.
    The air pressure at sea level doesn't help either - just the opposite as it creates a higher friction. That's the reason why planes try to "fly high" as with a lower air pressure ("thinner air") the friction is reduced thus facilitating higher speeds respectively fuel savings.

      Arrows are long……..
      Javelins are long
      Bullets aren’t and they (comparing bullet to bullet) do have similar flight characteristics
      Bullets are a poor example due to speed

    And there it is..... more facts from the fairy. For anyone aspiring to shoot hunting distances regardless of bow type this channel is legit.
    Question.....
    2 blade fixed broadhead with four fletchings.....
    But what about 3 blade broadhead? Three fletchings.... this would make sense to me on an aerodynamic basis. Also, with less fletchings the FOS would improve somewhat.
    General thoughts?
    Im an engineer and it’s refreshing to hear someone talking real physics rather than subjective cognitive bias. Perhaps more importantly..... ethical hunting!

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am an engineer also. I have always thought people who lined up their 3 blade broadheads with their 3 fletchings were crazy to think it would make a difference. I I always thought the air friction caused by the broadhead blades while the arrow shaft is spinning would create random turbulence and it wouldn't matter how they are oriented with respect to the fletchings. Could be wrong, but I think people who see improvement from lining them up is a case of confirmation bias.

      I’m with noble savage, but I’m no engineer I’ve just tested a lot of fletching configurations/broadheads because I like perfect arrow flight. The alignment doesn’t seem to matter. 4 fletch or fobs have given me the best results.
      My testing method was shoot groups with different fletching configurations and several of my favorite heads and see what produced the best average group size.

    Switching to the same new lighted nock shouldnt be an issue as long as orientation is the same shouldnt be an issue right? Mines starting to crap the bed on arrow number 1. I tested the other day and it seemed fine.

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Switching to any different nock shouldn't cause much of an issue as long as the orientation is the same and the nock point/distance doesn't change. Even different grain weights don't effect it much because the change in weight is so close to the string pushing it. I have a video showing how I screwed up nock tuning because I switched between nocks with different nock points. If you want, check it out, I think it might help you understand what I'm talking about.

    Sorry, but the video is misleading and lacks a few educational aspects. The diagram is in regards to Aero Concept 1.0. The this is based on the vanes AV2 or AV3 which are low drag high rotational spin vanes. The High spin rate from the vanes causes a phenomenon called " gyroscopic precession " which induces angular torque ( toward the front of the arrow ) . Along with several inches of frontal inner tube and a very low cross wind signature of the vane " stability " is increased , after impact and during flight. Yes the arrow can perform with lower FOC, but is can also maximize high FOC since the shaft is better stabilized on impact. The arrow not having the point down effect also decreases drag by head wind since point and vanes are only dominantly affected. On vertical bow I will reference Rod White of infinity Archery on facebook to go and video his write up on the ' BOOM STICK " when he was getting 27fps+ faster than any other arrow of match weight at 50yrds. Other than that we have high speed video of what actually happens regrading pressures , rotation and hydro dynamic cavitation So, I know where I stand in this . Do also note that the owner of Firenock comes from military background in working with ballistic missile. You probably should of done a little more research before making the video..

      Honestly, the arrow can do cartwheels the whole way to my deer I truly don’t care. It’s once the broad head makes impact that matters. Does my arrow have enough energy to go through whitetail bone twice? The answer so far is 600+ grains and 20%
      Foc of yes. Every single time. So take your slow motion cameras and rocket science and go have a drink my dude.

    • @vitallimits5090
      @vitallimits5090 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flounderwetspot8524 Arrow flight and ballistic launch co-efficiency is a big deal. That will dictate the impact of your arrow, but besides that aspect more importantly what happens after impact on the follow through of the arrow. I like a heavier arrow, but when I see people who adding ultra heavy "inserts , points " nothing more than tip weight to get 600-700+ arrows I find it that this is because they have to make up for not knowing how to build an arrow that can perform better in the overall dynamics.. The process I use will stabilize the arrow probably 600-700%+ faster, even on cross bow the arrow with a straight fletch vane will start rotational spin within as little 4-7 inches after launch which about shoves " paradox " into the trash can..

      @@vitallimits5090 I looked at firenock's website. Their website refers to a "null point." Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a greater FOC naturally move that "null point" forward on the arrow?
      It sincerely seems like the topic at hand is so deep that a short conversation on the internet or a short youtube video would never handle all aspects of it.
